Something i missed even after the 5th viewing was when Evelyn's kung fu master said "even this cookie can be kung fu" and how it relates directly to how Waymond fights with kindness, ie he kept bringing Diedre the IRS agent cookies.

"Kung Fu" translates literally to "bitter work". So kungfu is the idea that mastery comes from dedication and hard work. So anything can be kungfu as long as you are dedicated and work hard at something. Becoming a good parent is kungfu. Baking the perfect almond cookie is kungfu. Anything can be kungfu.

Don't worry about the information overload. You're supposed to feel like you're missing things you should be paying attention to because that's what it's like to be someone like Evelyn, who, like director Daniel Kwan, grew up with undiagnosed ADHD.

@@asmodeous7758 they ended up down playing the link to ADHD even tho its present still they didn't want the connection made after they did some research into ADHD and felt it was not appropriate to say "this is a movie that depicts ADHD" as ADHD looks very different for each person with it (there are like 10 major categories of adhd and 10000s of sub category for each major category) it is is a depiction of a Type of adhd they also didnt wanna make "disability's" seem like the enemies they where worried people would be 2 critical of jobu so they kept the elements but tied it closer to existentialism and Nihilism and depression which are common things people with adhd tend to go through but is also a much more universal cultural meme
i loved seeing the clash of millennial Nihilism (Evelyn) and gen z nihilism (Jobu)
This movie had a budget of $14 million and they filmed the entire thing in only a little over a month. 👏 Deserving of every single award.
Something to add: the bagel represented the negative mentality of "nothing matters" while the inverse of the bagel is the googley eyes being the positive view of "nothing matters."

The literal sobbing to laughing to crying again for the final 45 minutes of the movie is so relatable and I sob with all of the reactors I watch this movie with. I’m happy that you guys were able to relate to and feel this movie so deeply. This was one of the first movies I went to see after lockdown restrictions were loosened and watching this movie for the first time in theaters after the traumas we collectively went through had me feeling like a different person. If you guys ever have the opportunity, definitely make sure you get the cinema experience.
I will continue to shout from the rooftops how amazing this movie is to anyone who will listen. I don't care if sounds like hyperbole, but this movie literally cured my depression! I've always been a bit of a nihlist who believed that nothing we did matters. I was Jobu without the cool powers. I believed that, eventually, the human race will end, the sun will explode, the universe will collapse in on itself, etc... so why bother? What is the point of life and living, if nothing we do matters.
This movie taught me a different way to view that same nihilism: if nothing we do matters, then all that matters is what we do.
We can profoundly effect the world we live in just by being kind. Whether you believe in "religion" or "god" or "a higher power" or just that we are a giant coincidence created by billions of things going EXACTLY right to create a living being that can perceive the universe which created it. None of that matters. What matters is what we do with the time that we're here. That's all. Nothing else. It doesn't matter if our efforts are appreciated, or even noticed, because we control how we perceive the universe in which we live!
This movie is a modern miracle that spoke to my soul, and no matter how many times I watch it, I'm exhausted from crying at the end. This movie is..... EVERYTHING.
And to top everything off, they win seven of the eleven Oscars they were nominated for! I don't think I've ever actually cheered aloud at an award announcement, but I sure as heck did for this movie! Louder and louder each time they won and literally stood up and danced for the Best Picture!

Thank you for this comment! I have this movie so close to my heart. It's the best movie ever for me, because of everything you just wrote. I felt a different person after this movie. It's sad there are people that can't see the amazing and profound meaning of it. They think is just a confuse and funny movie but I will never forget how it changed me, the way I see life, my mother and time.
The brilliance of the introduction of the bagel is how it collapsed in on itself due to the weight of expectations. Joy says "all my old report cards" which is the expectations her parents had for her. Then she says "all my hopes and dreams" which is the expectations that she has for herself. "Every breed of dog" is the expectation of unconditional love and attachment. "Every personal ad" is the complexity of the expression of love between adults and if you read the ads it is a lot of fetishes...forbidden/taboo things that are difficult to discuss .
All of our confusion was by design. Joy said it best "there are a few specks of time where any of this makes sense." The direction of the movie was to mimic life. One minute you're laughing, the next you're crying, in quick succession - all the while asking yourself what the heck is going on? This was my hot take anyway.
Agreed! And that's the purpose of all the squickiness too. Because real life has lots of gross moments. (And some things that are gross for one person are pleasurable or even necessary for another, like the mating ritual in the hot dog verse, or the way they she had to use her feet to wipe Dierdre's tears)
Simply put: This is one of the greatest movies of ALL TIME. Period.
Agree with you. Very few movies are quite at the same level. Forrest Gump, la strada and very few others . But this in some sense is the Evolution and the sublimation of all the others.

A small detail most people miss (and I did for a few viewings, certainly) is that while Evelyn learns to love, and grows, and she's able to impact her family, *Deidre* also has a really interesting arc that's really in these bookend scenes at the IRS. At the beginning, she calls Evelyn "Mrs. Wang" and when noticing she's "in a different universe" says "hello???" and then calls what she's says bullshit. At the end, after having spoken with Evelyn and learning about her troubles, she says "Evelyn" instead, and then "did you hear me?" So much more empathy from Diedre than before. What a beautiful film.

* raccacoonie's voice actor is Randy Newman. Yes, the guy who sings Toy Story's You got a friend in me.
* Waymond quotes the song lyrics of "Absolutely (Story of a girl)" when he says "hair never falls in the same way". 3 versions of the song is played during the movie. The original, a country version, and a dominatrix rethemed lyric version. All are sung by the original artist.
* Guy who likes being dominated is played by one of the directors (Schienart)
* The other director (Kwan) gets sucked into the bagel

Ke Huy Quan was on Jackie Chan's stunt team for a time, he not only participated in but coordinated fights. He didn't just train for the movie, he has a long history of high level kung fu filmogrophy, he isn't just Short Round anymore.
I think the main message of the film is this:
Don't take anything for granted. Happiness can exist in your life no matter what your life path is. Don't get blinded by your troubles to the point of failing to realize the good things in your life.
Absurdism: the philosophical belief that human beings exist in a purposeless, chaotic universe. If there is no purpose in this chaotic universe, you can give purpose to whatever you want to.
The 'You have to be kind' speech kills me every time. That and 'You're not unloveable'. Every single damn time.
The doing taxes and laundry line kills me everytime..😢
There are sooo many good lines in this film. Another one for me is "We're all useless alone: good thing you're not alone."

When I watched this movie, I sat in my seat for what felt like an hour. I realized I just saw something incredibly deep and profound, but had no idea what just hit me like a bus. And that feeling stayed with me for days. What an amazing piece of art this film is, and the actors were phenomenal.
...And I will never look at a bagel the same again.

I’ve probably seen this film over 20 times. This is such a good film because you’re right, it is dealing with something deep and profound that we all face. This film seeks to answer the question of how to live well in a crazy world.
And it is exceptionally well crafted, A24 has incredible talent. I could talk for hours on how nothing done is arbitrary, the cookie, her daughter being in a same sex relationship, even the pig on the leash. Everything comes back around, everything is important.
@@Vaillle I remember just sitting in my chair, saying out loud to myself in the best way, "What the *heck* did I just watch?!?", while wiping tears away. It really is an incredible work of art. Some of the absurdities are so chaotic and comedic that it completely threw me off while watching that first time. But I really kept thinking about it for days afterward, and other aspects came forward. The mother-daughter dynamic, generational traumas, the pleas for understanding, kindness, and true empathy, and ultimately what I can only say is the best possible version of nihilism there is: if nothing truly matters, then *everything* matters.
And I joke about the bagel, but whenever I see one now, I'm instantly reminded of the amazing moments that stuck with me!

After watching more and more of the interviews and details behind the scene, I strongly believe there's divine influences. Having Michelle getting the role instead of Jackie Chan, having a story written as a crazy maximalist movie slowly evolve to a touching story of family and kindness. Having the most fitting cast of Ke Huy Quan playing a soft kind husband and also a awesome strong fighter. Having the movie held back during the devastating pandemic, after the world has gone through the confusing and depressing time. With all the division and fighting. The movie finally served to us as a reminder and encouragement - Please be kind to each other, especially in this confusing time.
How this movie evolve creatively and organically from conception to birth is a miracle!
This movie deserved all 7 of its Academy Awards wins, 5 Critics Awards wins, 8 Independent Spirit Awards, and 4 Screen Actors Guild Awards. And I thought this was the best edited film I have ever seen.

Respectfully you were not crying girl, you were sobbing. I have never seen another movie that has made people uncontrollably sob the way this movie has. It deserved every award. It really is something special.

I feel like they did a lot of work to actively break the fourth wall and make this hit. The part about institutions crumbling, and everything falling apart, Michelle Yeoh's actual red carpet footage being used during the initial kung fu montage, Ke's speeches in and outside the movie
"I don't know what to say" is a 100% normal and acceptable response to a first viewing of this movie.
Oh I'm SO excited y'all watched this. This is my favorite movie of all time. For reference, I'm have a Master's in Screenwriting and I've been studying film for nearly ten years, and this is by far the best movie I've ever seen. No question, no competition.
- Ke Huy Quan (Waymond/Shortround) was a child actor for a short while and then really struggled to find work in the 2000's. He went on to do stunt work as a stunt coordinator for a bit, so yes, he can just do those stunts. He said that the reason he decided to start acting again after a 20 year hiatus was because he saw Crazy Rich Asians, and realized that for the first time ever, Hollywood (and the world) were accepting and welcoming Asian actors in leading roles. This movie has since jumpstarted his career back up and he's booked and busy with an Oscar to boot.
- The last forty minutes of this movie always destroy me. "The only thing I do know is that we have to be kind, especially when we don't know what's going on." and "In another life, I would've really liked just doing laundry and taxes with you." will ALWAYS make me cry. Then Joy's speech, then Evelyn's speech... Wow.
- One of my favorite easter eggs (if you can even call it that...) is that there are circles everywhere. The circled paper, the bagel, Joy's hair, the googly eyes, the black hole... it all ties together. Circles are a big part of Chinese culture--they represent harmony and balance, yin and yang, and given the narrative of the story, it makes sense. It's about breaking the circle of generational trauma, of breaking the black hole that's all consuming and near-impossible to pull yourself away from.
- Drama, when done correctly, always has to be balanced with levity. That's why this movie is such a gut-punch. It fluctuates between a tense, broken family dynamic where everyone is at odds, and then counters it with something silly like an over-the-top IRS agent with a buttplug statue. The weaving of comedy and drama is done MASTERFULLY in this script, which is why the audience is left absolutely devastated at the end. It's a silly story about a woman living her worst life, trying to figure out what makes her special. But that's not just it--its about a mother having the courage to break generation trauma, about a daughter learning to stand up for herself and speak her mind amidst societal and family pressure, about a family trying and failing to do right by each other, about love and hope and kindness and frailty.
- A fun fact for y'all: the role was originally written for Jackie Chan, before the Daniels (directors) decided to flip the gender. They approached Michelle Yeoh, and the character of Evelyn was actually named Michelle. Michelle refused to take it before they changed the name to something else and they were happy to comply.
This movie is so incredible and the writing is so tight. Literally every detail is intentional, and I'm still finding things with each watch. Here are a few of my favorite details, though:
-The third-eye google eye is the inverse of Jobu's despair bagel circle on the forehead.
-When they're hiding under the desk and Evelyn says "Don't push me!" it is obviously literal because he's pushing her to make room for them both to hide, and is also great dialogue to show their relationship as a married couple with the little bickering and such... But it also has a double meaning because he's metaphorically pushing her to live up to her ultimate potential. I just can't get over how tight the writing is tbh.
-The message about fighting with kindness is represented by Waymond's cookies, which they point out first during Evelyn's diatribe to Joy about how she fights but Waymond brings cookies, secondly when Evelyn jumps to the kung fu verse and her teacher says "even this cookie can be kung fu," and then again at the end when she is learning to fight with kindness and she gives IRS verse teacher the cookie. There may be even more times that I missed though.
-Even earlier than the cookie fighting bit, they secretly tell us the meaning of the whole film with Big Nose's missing laundry order. It's ticket number 042 aka the meaning of life, the universe, and everything from Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. You could take it as just a simple easter egg, but I think that considering how good the writing is, they chose it very intentionally. In which case they are saying that doing laundry, and especially helping members of the community with their laundry, IS the meaning of life. We aren't just "stuck" doing laundry and taxes, we are here doing laundry and taxes -together-, just like Waymond says in the final act. This is reinforced by the seemingly "random" Raccaccoonie universe with the line "We're all useless alone: good thing you're not alone"
Bonus: I love how Evalyn doesn't just take skills from stereotypically aspirational jobs. There are valuable skills even in the universes where she is a janitor, a sign-spinner, a restaurant worker, or even completely unable to use her hands.

What a great synopsis and a few things I hadn't caught yet! I will forever be disappointed by movies now that I know how GOOD a movie can be. EVERYTHING in this film is intentional, has purpose, has a message. It makes rewatching it so great because not only do I understand more of the (crazy, confusing) story, but I can pick up on all the little hints along the way.

Regarding the awards mentioned in the beginning. This is the most awarded film in film history. Prior to this, LOTR: Return of King have held this title for years.

I have watched this movie far too many times through the eyes of those who are watching it for the first time. They key is the shared emotions that we ALL feel because of all this movie is. YOU two brought back that feel of the very first time....I appreciate re living the emotions the two of you brought to this. And yes this movie has got me to the point that whenever I see A24 is a part of a project I'm IN!
Joy aka Jobu experiences every universe, all the time. In other words, Everything Everywhere, All at Once
“Q: Is this movie a masterpiece?” A: yes, yes, yes, enthusiastic yes
This is a film that through weeks of rewatching, I kept seeing something new, I kept understanding it more. It’s a great message wrapped in a absurdist style and filmed with amazing cinematography.
If you’d like to understand why it hits so hard emotionally, why it’s so captivating I recommend checking out some information on the Daoist yin and yang. This film is heavily referencing that philosophy which is a great answer to the question of how to live in the world. I know this because of the googly-eye and bagel. They are mirror opposites of each other and they’re referring to the ☯️.
In as few words as possible; the ‘white’ represents ‘order’ and the ‘black’ chaos. Both have good and bad sides to it. Chaos can be danger, but also new possibilities. Order can be organized and explored territory, or it can be tyranny and stuntification. Each side must incorporate a little of the other, that’s why the black and white dots are shown on each side, to balance each side and make each side the best version of itself. Then WE are to walk down the center line, one foot in good order and one in good chaos, and that’s the way to live in the world.
At the start of the film, Evelyn and Joy are the ‘order’ and ‘chaos’ side of the symbol without their opposing dots. That’s why Evelyn has to do random things to reach her potential and why Jobu(joy) was looking for her mother(order).
I could go one but it’s such a brilliant film and it’s great on rewatch, I don’t want to spoil the magic of it, but it’s so well executed. Masterclass film! My favorite film.

When I talk about the best movies I've ever seen, I have a very short list that I think have to be in the conversation. For over 20 years (since Mulholland Dr. in 2001), there were five films on that list. Now there are six...
Wait I clicked on this hella fast but I don’t think I processed whether I’m ready to cry again with y’all
This is my favorite movie because of the experience I have watching it. Feeling so much, so often and relating to every character moves me every time
I didn't expect it to get me as much as it did. It climbed up my favorites list that's for sure.
Fun Fact: Due to Covid this movie was filmed in only 38 days
This movie really was amazing! It won so many Academy Awards including 3 of the 4 acting nominations with Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan and Jaime Lee Curtis taking those awards. The only one that didn't was Stephanie Hsu who played Joy. Michelle Yeoh is a huge international star and does have a large fan base in the US. She is actually good friends with Jackie Chan and has done movies with him such as a movie called Supercop which is a really fun ride. If you haven't seen Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon that is another great performance by her and if you want to see her in a non fighting role she was amazing in Crazy Rich Asians and Memoirs of a Geisha. One funny fact about Everything Everwhere All At Once is that the lead character was going to be male and was offered to Jackie Chan but he turned it down and suggested that they offer the role to Michelle Yeoh and change the character to a woman. I've seen interviews with her stating that she started to call him after the reviews and nominations started coming out to thank him as a sort of way to rib him about turning down the role.
Allot of well intentioned people tell you what this film means. Like all great art, it means something different to everyone who watches it.
I'm gonna go out on a limb and say this is a top ten film of all time
Top five, maybe top three
Its a fight between it and La Strada, Forrest Gump, Le notti di Cabiria , and very few others . I dont put in the game the usual movies because i do not think they deserve to be in this list. There Is a difference between a pretentious movie and a great movie. For example i do not think that Fellini's "8 e mezzo" Is a great movie. Too much talk and no visual emotions. Directors should never forget that cinema is not literature.
Fun Fact: Waymond/(Ke Que) won an Oscar for this, Jamie Lee won for this and Michele won for this and the directors won, score won, editing won and it won Best Picture. Simple a classic.
II saw it in the theater twice when it came out. The theater crowd loved it! I saw it about 10 times at home so far. It is in my top 4 of all time with 'Raising Arizona' and 'Goodfellas'.

I liked how the bagel being depressed and serious and the googly eyes being light and funny. The bagel is dark on the outside and light in the center and the googly eyes are light on the outside and dark in the center.
This is one of the greats of all time. Up there with 'The Matrix', 'It's a Wonderful Life', 'A Christmas Story', etc.
Maybe a bit higher, up there with Forrest Gump, La Strada, ...

i literally love this movie so much. made my gf watch this with me and it was great seeing her cry lmao
When verse-jumping, you're only supposed to use memories/skills from 1 universe at at time- very skilled jumpers could do more than 1, but too many tends to fry the brain and the jumper dies. Joy showed particular skill in utilizing multiple- so pushed passed the limit- but didn't die. That's what Waymond was talking about with the clay pot. Waymond yells "Shut it down!" because she was *supposed* to drop the universe once it was used. Evelyn didn't, just like Joy didn't. So she kept accumulating more universes until she started to crack. But just like Joy, Evelyn eventually conquered the cracking- and harnessed the entirety of the multiverse. That is why she kept getting more skills and not losing them entirely between jumps like the other fighter jumpers did- she stacked hers.
When we first see Alpha Waymond in the laundromat security camera, he's gathering the umbrella, marker, and Chapstick he'll later use in the IRS building.

two things: I always find it odd when people find the bearded man commenting about evelyn's perfume creepy. He's obviously familiar with them, enough to dance with the dad in the middle of the landromat. He is talking about how he misses his wife. He's a wodower. The other thing is that people never mention that this film does not take place in our universe. In the universe the movie takes place, awards and trophies resemble sex toys.
I think it is kind of supposed to feel a little uncomfortable at the beginning, because Evalyn is at odds with everyone. Just like how in the beginning she feels like Dierdre is her enemy and actively targeting her. But by the end she accepts those around her and what they need/want, which is shown by her actively spraying the perfume for the man and becoming Dierdre's friend.
I think the awards are just commentary about how the IRS just F***s everyone in the a$$, but that was just my take.

ive been saying it to years as people often approached me fearfully when i said im a nihilist scared im gonna do something mean of selfish or violent just cos i could and i spent years saying over and over "just because nothing matters dose not mean things don't matter to me it just means i CHOSE what matters to me and that i always try to be kind as we are all dealing with the swirling bucket of bullshit that's is reality and life is already horrid and meaningless so why must we make it worse for each other we should cherish the insignificant ephemeral smoke that is our lives while we can cos once its gone .,.. that's it there's nothing no reason no greater purpose

i remember from about the intro of part 2 i was inconsolable cos someone FINALLY GETS IT someone else sees it and its beautiful some days i struggle and im more like jobu but the mantra of "be kind" can not be overstated

In like 38 days in essentially 1 building w around 5 or so peeps working w special fx editing software. This is a triumph of creativity and writing over budget. Btw "Short Round" got into fight choreography after he found there were no roles for Asian actors in Hollywood... so he already had some skills. So many details make u root for these actors
@@RelaxwithJC Reports differ, but the description I've seen from the directors says that the actual filming was $15 million, with an additional $10 million for postproduction etc. Most of the filming was done in the office building in early 2020 (not having to move around saves time & money), with one week at the end for outdoor locations and the laundromat etc.
They had to shut down for lockdown 1 day early, and made that up in bits and pieces whenever they could. They also wanted it to get a theater release because they knew it would play especially well with a big audience gathered together (to this day I regret not seeing it in a theater). So release was postponed to 2022, and that extra time allowed them to really polish the editing, sound, and similar details.
The directors said $14 million.
