So glad you could see this classic movie. Twister 1996 was what I grew up with 27 years ago. I have kept my VHS of the film and I tend to watch this in the Winter when storms aren't around. This movie was the first ever on DVD as well.
I am a real trained SKYWARN storm chaser for the National Weather Service in Texas. I have seen the real storms in person, and believe me those 🌪️ are not something to mess around with.
Film sequel comes out July 19th, 2024.
Rest in peace Bill Paxton (The Extreme,) Philip Seymour, and Van Halen. Gone but not forgotten.

A water tornado is called a waterspout. A land tornado can also be called a "twister". Love the reaction. Thanks!

My grandpa was an extra in this movie. He’s driving the combine at 12:53. That scene was filmed right out in front of his house. That combine actually caught fire and burned to the ground that same year. This movie will always be special to me.

I'm no storm chaser or meteorologist but the sounds a tornado makes is determined by what they're destroying and the debris they create, they can sound like a train under the right circumstances. Pecos Hank explains that in more detail in one of his videos

Tornadoes absolutely can spring up without warning. Now, obviously not on a clear, sunny day, but during storms that do not have the necessary ingredients for a tornado, suddenly those ingredients can rapidly manifest and a tornado can be on the ground before anyone has had a chance to push a warning.
This very recently happened in Livonia, Michigan - a tornado touched down without warning, because the severe storms in the area were not seen as capable of producing a tornado… until suddenly, it was.
Most of the time, there will be plenty of sign that a tornado is possible, and a warning will be will issued if the conditions are right for a tornado to form.
Also worth noting - tornado sirens are for OUTDOOR warning, they aren’t intended to warn you inside your home. Turn the emergency alerts on on your phones and buy a NOAA weather radio.

I can imagine when ancient civilization first ever saw a tornado before it was known for what it is now, they must’ve thought it was the end or a sign from the gods or something lol

Have seen it hundreds of times it was a movie my mother always had on for something to have just noise in the house going in the background, which as a kid in Oklahoma a lesson could be learned I guess... Have a look on Tube what storm chasers did to honor the passing of Bill Paxton RIP...

The dude wouldn't stop marinating on why the tornado 's debris would kill them and she is just invested in the emotional impact of the scene where they get to see inside one. Guess who was actually really invested in the story?

    Weiner.
I saw this in theaters as a kid. It was so loud and blew my mind.
There was also a Twister ride at Universal Studios in Orlando that simulated a tornado and it was pretty realistic. I agree that this is a good summer flick that makes me miss thunderstorm weather.

Years ago, I had occasion to pass through a town the day after a large hurricane had cut through. There was a two storey house that had been cut in two. It looked like a cutaway illustration. Half the house was missing and the other half was in perfect order with beds made and pictures still on the walls. Tornados really can leave things unharmed that are next to total destruction.

Fun Fact: Dorothy is based more or less exactly on a real invention: the TOtable Tornado Observatory (TOTO), a barrel-shaped sensor package that would be dropped off the back of a truck near the twister to record sensory data. This revolutionary invention was incredibly helpful in cataloguing the specific conditions that produce tornados.
This is one of the reasons we have the "Tornado Watch", where tornados are forecasted before they actually form using data from air currents and moisture distribution, which has likely saved many tens of thousands of lives over the years as people made the choice to shelter during a watch, only for a tornado to actually appear while they were already sheltered.

  • @cleekmaker00
    @cleekmaker00 2 місяці тому +1

"DOROTHY" and DOT3" were both based on an early Tornado instrument pack called "TOTO", the TOtable Tornado Observatory. Its failings were shown in the film; they all were too light and got destroyed by debris. Nowadays Tornado probes are much smaller and very heavy so they can't be displaced by either wind or debris. The sensor packs are computerized and can read much more accurately and quickly.

the tornado themselves are sudden but it's the weather prior to it that is your warning sign if you know what to look for. Typically once temps start to rise especially may-september is when tornados occur especially in the region from the U.S into Canada known as tornado alley

So, Weiner. This movie has always been one of my faves just like Jordan. It might be that I was too young to understand all the physics discrepancies, but I still love it!
Short story: shortly after we got married, my wife got a temp job working a film festival while we lived in Fort Worth, TX. Bill Paxton was the face of the festival that year. Towards the end of the event, a tired Bill Paxton put his hand on my wife's shoulder and gave her a tired smile thanking her for all her work for the festival. He was super nice to all the workers and went out of his way to thank them even though he had to be exhausted.

I love this movie it's 28 years old and still looks incredible lol
Fun fact this was the first movie to be put onto DVD lol
The little girl in the beginning is Alexa Vega
This is basically a 2 hour commercial for Ram Trucks and I love it lol
12:50 great line "can I drive?" "No" "then would you?" Lol
14:45 "where's my truck?" "There it is" lol
17:35 there was an idea to make that cow a zebra instead to tie it into Jumanji which came out a year before this but they decided against it lol
22:20 most "old highways" are two lanes like that so it could absolutely be a highway
30:00 you might've missed it but their fingers are all bandaged up from cutting those cans lol
You can actually see the path the tornado took at the end

This movie scared the crap out of me when I was a kid lol. I remember watching it at my grandparents’ place in rural Georgia (surrounded by peach orchards, cotton fields, and pastures with cows), and when thunderstorms would roll in I’d be terrified that a tornado would get us. But it left an impression on me, I’ve had a fascination with tornadoes and love watching live streams from chasers.

Such a great reaction! 😊 Living in Maine means I would likely not have to experience this level of terror and I'm really happy about that however I also saw this when I was probably around 8 or 9 and then my parents thought it was a good idea to take me on the Twister ride at Universal Studies 😂😂 Traumatized me for life. Also I think the semi was in the air and the truck wasn't because it had already been sucked up into the wind meaning it was going like 150 mph already.

That last tornado wasn't trying to kill them, it was more "Let me show you what I am."
Also, when the lead actor (Bill Paxton) died, storm chasers across the country lined up in the Midwest so their tracking signals showed BP on trackers in respect for how they were portrayed in this movie.
