As someone who has been following the channel since not long after it started, I have just realised something after watching this video. Most vehicle repair/rebuild channels, as they get bigger, tend to rush through the repairs and builds and also edit out a lot of what is going on. With salvage rebuilds uk, it's the total opposite. I have noticed that you explain things more in-depth now than you did when you were a really small channel and you also explain exactly whats going on right down to the changing of the smallest screw and nut & bolt and I don't know about the other viewers, but I for one am truly grateful that you do this, as I have learnt a massive amount about the repairing of cars just from watching this channel. Not only is this channel entertaining, but it's one of the best vehicle repair educational channels on UA-cam and that includes the ones on the other side of the pond as well. So, a massive thank you from me Rob & Chris, and I just hope that all the other viewers appreciate what you do for us as well. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🙏👍
No one else is doing content like this . I’m truly shocked that you manage to find the time and genuine enthusiasm , to keep publishing these . I mean two a week is a huge commitment. Simply marvelous
From time to time I read some of the comments and, from time to time, I see the odd comment about Rob not doing as much as Chris! What those people don't realize is that Rob works on most weekends, films & edits the videos, picks up ther projects, does the MOTS, cleans the cars and yes repairs them as well. Now Chris is more repairs orineted and more reserved but Chis deals with the customers, buys parts, picks them up. Each one of them has their own strenghts! You don't really think they should be the exact copy of each other or their partnership wouldn't be beneficial to either of them! They need to be able to complete each other to make for a great success; which they are. Just my $0.02; some comments really rub the wrong way and are of no added value, I think.
I bet fords 2 year 30K miles oil change interval plays a good part in these engines dieing. We've got a load of them at work and to think the oil only gets changed once every 2 years or 30K miles is mad, they get start stop hammered from 7AM until 5PM everyday and not one will have the oil level checked in that time either. Top upload again 👍😎
Modern engines so well engineered and robust, that one has done a few miles and will do a few miles more with the new belts and covers. Good job chaps.👍
Brilliant guys hi I'm a mechanic from Dublin just finished 2018 transit custom 2.0 ecoblue replaced cam belts and oil pump belts oil pump and vacuum pump oil light was flickering on and off belts were starting to break apart and clogging up the pump pick up these engine high cost regular maintenance there only 85000 kilometres with regular servicing
Luckily the oil pick up filter was still allowing oil to pass through. Most of the debris was in the bottom of the sump and I think it has the upgraded oil pickup fitted
So happy for you both. All the garages we spoke to just wanted to replace the engine. It’s been great following the work and will definitely be ordering a Wang it over T-Shirt on the weekend.
The first start up after a rebuild is one of the most satisfying things ever. I punched the air when it started. How sad am I? Since my dad rebuilt the engine on his morris 12 it's got me every time.
Phew, some interesting new angles on engine rebuilding in this one. I am glad the valves were all okay, and that there was no head damage or the like. Certainly engine design has changed over the years, Engine bays looked crowded these days, but the complexity of the drives in that engine were something else. You have the essential patience to make sure that all those timing points are right, but that was the only way to get it all set up and well worth the care you took. It sounded lovely once it started and was clearly a much happier motor than before. The rest of the journey should now be a less tense journey to success and another nice result. A great start for the weekend - shame about today's weather, anyone for boating? If Sunday is like today, your weekend video will be welcomed by thousands.
Fantastic job, Lads. You got stuck straight in, with your usual attention to detail and all the proper checks and tests. Proper fault-finding. It certainly paid off. Top blokes.
Rob and Chris. Bravo to both of you, this must be up there as one of the most interesting and intuitive videos you've put out. Nothing comes sweeter than success!
omg you guys are awesome. You show everything important and relevant. Can't believe how thorough you both are and it has been a joy to watch you do this repair. It is so refreshing to see mechanics(engineers) do a job properly and explain everything so well. Just subscribed and look forward to watching more of your videos
I think we were all nervous about the restart, in fact, if we had been a studio audience you'd have been handing out cigars like a proud new father! The look on your face was priceless! Thanks for making my day!
Iv said it before but the mutual respect between you both is great to see. Also theirs no ego from either of you. And as much knowledge you both may have you still take on other people's suggestions. Great blokes. Keep it up 👌
Haha your smile always makes me so happy Rob. Looking at that engine it's like so much modern stuff now, Ford don't want you to repair it they want you to buy a new van or a new engine. They purposely don't supply certain parts so they can force you into a corner. It's lucky you knew about that bloke in Essex. In America the "Right to Repair" movement is fighting big corporates so that we can repair our own devices. Apple started the ball rolling restricting spares for iPhones and Macbook computers. The latest iPhones have loads of components digitally mapped to the phone so if you fit a third party item the phone will lock you out forcing you to go to an Apple store and pay obscene prices for repairs or accept a refurbished item again for a ridiculous price. John Deere are doing the same thing with their tractors and Tesla with their electric cars. They are conspiring to control the market. We bought the items but do we really own them if the manufacturer can just switch them off at any time?
Without blowing smoke up anyones arse you to make the perfect team , there’s no ego’s on show , it’s just crack on and do the job ..oh I could find someone out here in Spain with your attitude and ethics ...keep up the good work .
Rob and Chris that was absolutely brilliant, - to think that every single one of us that watches the video today has learned something through it. To be fair I was as excited as you Rob and indeed just as pleased that it ran ok! Wow, what a job!! Ford designed and brought out the model T Ford in 1908 which had such a simple engine / design - where on earth did the engine in this Transit come from??
Rob & Chris Just absolutely brilliant video and content just keep this style of video coming, longer the better. I so look forward to your content you guys are so good " The best on UA-cam"
Hi Rob and Chris, nice repair guys, proper result this one. Still seems weird to have a belt running in oil though.! Looking forward to Sunday's video.. cheers, Alex.
I was thinking why anyone would make an engine so complicated to work on - Its as if they built it to be expensive to repair. Surely not................... Great job, a lot less was known about these when you guys had to work on it. Like all great British explorers, you conquered it!

Great stuff boys as usual. You two have the luck of the Irish. I hope these are now going to be half hour long. Love em. Have a great weekend guys and enjoy the sun. Stay safe.
Just as good as it gets, your workmanship is second to none. This is the best job you've done, especially as you've not worked on those engines previously. Great work lads.
Another cracking video , I really like these mechanical fixes and if there is any proof of not changing the cam belt to save a few quid it's this video. Love it.
Rob/Chris at one time we ran 60 Customs but now down to 40 now actually like the vans but mechanically bloody awful things. We only keep the ones we have now for 21/2 years or 60000 mks that way we avoid major mechanical issue's or at least most of them.We have also found that parts very expensive and also the vans are not that cheap to buy anymore.we have bought some of the latest vivaro,s but I think they may not do so well.We are I think going to buy around 35 of the latest Renault Traffics after all can't be any worse than the Customs, hopefully, also Ford back up is sometimes awful..
You guys are engine whispers, you do an amazing job and so satisfying to watch it all happen as you would not normally see any engine works!! Over the moon it started first time, looking forward to seeing the next one. Have a good weekend lads👍👍
Been having a go at a Peugeot diesel...for the first time...very similar internals to this one...watching these has been so helpful...hope I get it to fire up like you guys...thanks so much!
Add blue light will probably still be on after filling it up because of faults in ECU you must clear faults and test drive for light to go out just done the same job broken belt and the light was on 🤬
I'm still sitting here scratching my head, wondering what the heck the engineers were thinking with that one. It's a completely unserviceable assembly! Just to get their hands on a new one entailed buying an entirely new engine and stripping it for parts! Madness. According to other comments this is a Peugeot engine? It looks nothing like any Ford engine I've seen in North America; not that we have many little four-cylinder diesels over here in the first place...
I like the way that you guys analyse things from a practical point of view. The steel straight edge across the top of the valve stems saved a lot of work in having to strip off the head and rebuild. Just can’t get my head around how an oil pump driven by a belt can be a good design! Another cracking video 👍👍👍
Brilliant video ford must be ashamed to put a engine in thats made of cheese Builders joiners plumbers all bought ford transits because they were such great vans Sadly ford need to reinvent the wheel and start making good vehicles Anyway well done a superb video
Some people would say your lucky no bent valves, you did your research and checks then took the percentage risk, and I'm sure Chris was confident which reassured you Rob, hopefully a decent couple of days pay for you both
21:01 "one-time-use (modern) copper-washer", in the old days, they did heat up copper-washers to a slightly red glow, clean them, and good and soft they were again, ready to use.
From what I can make out these manufactures nowadays a skimping out big time , no woodruff key ? no proper gasket , plastic everywhere . Takes the piss
Nice result lads, and nice to see inside one of these engines, I had one exactly the same but never had the chance to see inside as it was hired, ... Interesting camshaft design
Another great in depth vid guys, I'm learning so much about some of these engines. I heard ed China wants to be your tea boy😁. Have a restful weekend if you can (vid on Sunday!) Rob put some new Duracell batteries in Chris they must running low! Best channel on you tube👍. I'm going to look for the 8 saddos who put a thumbs down😂
Really enjoy your channel, Rob and Chris. Glad it all came good with the Transit. Was hoping to see how you set the timing when reassembling but understand with the lack of space that it would not be easy to do. Maybe next time! Cheers.
Starting the weekend on a high. You just know Chris won't be able to resist "getting involved" and get things sorted before Monday morning. Have a great weekend whatever you guys get up to.
I've got to say, Rob, that this engine is a servicing disaster. Why has Ford gone back to using timing belts when the old 2.4 Duratec engine used chains? In addition, they have added another belt which is hard to get at and you have to half dismantle the entire engine just do to a belt change! I've always been a fan of Ford engines but to me, this one is an abortion! Add to this the all-in-one cam setup and you have an engine which was deliberately designed to thwart the independent mechanic! Incidentally, my old Duratec 2.4 had 330,000 miles on it when I sold it. Still pulling strong, burnt no oil and made no noises it shouldn't
Because the old 2.0 tdci engines were Mazda units, and now Ford have designed their own. Was supposed to be a game changer, but has turned out to have durability issues. Why oh why is it cam belted? Why is oil pump not direct driven? Why can't you take cams out of the cam box? Why is it a mass of pipes under bonnet? Ford dropped a boll**k!
As a Professional Decorator for 40 years this engine job would be my equivalent of stripping woodchip wallpaper with 10 coats of paint on it ,you start these things and think wtf have i done to deserve this but you get the payoff at the end that others walked away from ,well filmed video too and you deserve whatever profit you make out of this job .
I’m so happy this turned out a runner with the original engine and some good work and parts on it. And I’m happy that a Sunday video is coming I love the Sunday videos when they happen 😁 great job here guys give yourself a pat on the back for a job very well done 👍🏼
Made up for you guys absolutely cracking well done 👍🏻 robs excitement when she fired up was fantastic that’s what I love from this channel the genuine ness love it x
I've worked on all sorts of diesels, what a horrid, nasty piece of engineering that one is, all the more recent Transits have had poor engines with lots of trouble. Note to self, never buy a Transit.
I think the governments need to reconsider what's really causing the worst environmental impacts.... Diesel engines, or the "single use" covers and cams sold as one unit which can't be bought on their own or repaired!! Perhaps they need to encourage longevity and ease of repair instead of banning ICE's completely 🤔🤔
Yep, it makes you wonder when every company claims to be more environmentally friendly yet more and more things are becoming harder to repair or single use 🧐
This nonsense began with lightbulbs and Sherman tanks. Yet how many notice that the same policy is being applied to US Humans? Covidius, covidium, covidia...! Yep, those last three words are essentially bollox, but they’re Latin bollox 🧐😎😜 Peace
That's great lads, the last video made me go and read about this engine and let's just say I'm glad it's not fitted in my Mondeo, I think there is a recall for injectors, there was a lot of talk about them and also oil leaks, but that van sounds lush and these videos just get better, brilliant work lads
Well done! Wouldn't have taken that on. Very poor engine design, no regard for servicing and or repair, even with their inflated parts prices. Shame on you Ford! And I've got a 50 year old Ford sitting in my garage!
Nice work Rob and Chris, the Ford Transit starts very well.seemed technical to sort out but the results are brilliant.another video Sunday will be watching that one.😀

Ridiculous that they have to buy whole engines for parts.
I’m so happy this turned out a runner with the original engine and some good work and parts on it. And I’m happy that a Sunday video is coming I love the Sunday videos when they happen 😁 great job here guys give yourself a pat on the back for a job very well done 👍🏼
Wonder why people put a thumb down.
Some people hate to see people happy
Made up for you guys absolutely cracking well done 👍🏻 robs excitement when she fired up was fantastic that’s what I love from this channel the genuine ness love it x
Got to be a new t-shirt ' Wang it Over'
That’s a old one in the merch store 👍
"Wang it over" ...love it! There was never any doubt it would run as you guys are just too good at this stuff.
I used to work with a guy from South London who used to call an easy job "Piece of fat!".
@@markmiwurdz202 I've never heard that saying either and i'm not that far from London.
Great work as always guys. How about a “wang it over “ t-shirt 😁
Should be one in the merch store Bud
Great job guys being a ex fitter get the wow factor when it all comes together
👍👍👍👍👍😉 let's get it on 🤣🤣
Another great build Rob and Chris. Love the combination of talk, explanation supported by time lapse to show what you have achieved.
I've worked on all sorts of diesels, what a horrid, nasty piece of engineering that one is, all the more recent Transits have had poor engines with lots of trouble. Note to self, never buy a Transit.
We had a recall on the oil pump on a 2013 transit custom with Ford and the sump leaked oil every since went back 3 times. So watch for that.
I couldn't agree more. We seem to live in a throw away age. Great video guys ,no messing about.
Yep, those last three words are essentially bollox, but they’re Latin bollox 🧐😎😜
Peace
Really glad you got it sorted guys
what a mess of hoses
That's great lads, the last video made me go and read about this engine and let's just say I'm glad it's not fitted in my Mondeo, I think there is a recall for injectors, there was a lot of talk about them and also oil leaks, but that van sounds lush and these videos just get better, brilliant work lads
Well done! Wouldn't have taken that on. Very poor engine design, no regard for servicing and or repair, even with their inflated parts prices. Shame on you Ford! And I've got a 50 year old Ford sitting in my garage!
Nice work Rob and Chris, the Ford Transit starts very well.seemed technical to sort out but the results are brilliant.another video Sunday will be watching that one.😀
belt in oil , Fords Failure of the past 13 years across the range
Well done Rob & Chris, it lives, that's another string in your bow, have a great wkend.
