Great video Jonny, I own a 64 "B" plate Mk1 Cortina 4 door in the same colour, mine though is just a deluxe, but it is unrestored and original. Mine eats condensers for breakfast, lets me down all the time, but I love it. Lovely to see a genuine not been played around with Mk1. The air filter on the car is a 1500cc air filter, and the carb is a Zenith identical to my 1500cc, if the engine block has 116e or 120e on the side behind the exhaust, it's a 1500 engine, 113e is a 1200. The blue door you were puzzled by was Ford Corsair, the red door you had at the same time Mk2 Cortina. Hope the old girl makes it back on the road soon🤞

I'm really just a home tinkerer, mine has let me down so many times now, I travel with a full new ignition set and screwdrivers every time I drive it!

if your car eats condensers, maybe the starter has two cables going to the solenoid? on german fords from the 70's and earlier, the second cable circumvents the ignition's resistor cable while starting to give you a stronger spark. if someone fiddled with that your ignition might be under 12V permanently. and that will fry the condenser, I gather.

I found a Cortina Racecar here in Colorado once. I was walking through an old storage yard behind the body shop I worked for a few years back and it was under a cover that was disintegrating. The interior was mint and the dash had racing plaques on it. I found a picture in the glovebox of it in an actual race. I did research online, found the old race drivers name, and contacted the family. They didn't even know the car was there. I'm guessing the owner passed away. Although the bottom of the fenders were rusting away it still had a beautiful White paintjob with green stripes on the sides from front to back. They offered to sell the car for $50k usd. I couldn't afford that. I went back there again a few months later and the car was gone. What a rare beautiful LHD racecar with dual webbers too and a wooden race wheel. Thanks for the great videos! I really love the channel.

Great video as usual. You bring us the "real" cars from our collective history. I can remember our neighbour with their light blue Mk1 Cortina proudly showing it to my dad. We had a Fintail Merc 200 or perhaps it was the Ponton 180 B then. They parked right next to us on the street. The memories are with all the dads on the street all looking underneath the bonnets of their cars.
We kids skinning our knees as we fell off our bikes, or kicking a football aimlessly....really no aim at all.
History for some is a lot of dates around important battles. Social history is often arounds cars and the like. I can still remember the smell of the interiors and the oily engines.

Jonny…it probably is running by now but if not, check the starter motor Earth connection on the body of the starter…it can rust and kill the earthing which gives that slow start effect. It was a big problem on the early Victor FD cars 1967/69 and caused a lot of heartache. We redrilled the hole in the starter body and fitted a new connector after which the engine turned over at about three times the speed and the car never failed to start ever again. Useless information maybe unless you unearth a 1968 Victor 2000….RHW 257G in Carnelian Red would be amazing!!!😀😀😀😀

Apply engine engine earth directly to body of the starter motor and it will spin over a bit quicker.

All MK1 ohv Cortinas have Lucas 25d4 distributors , & the Lotus has Lucas 23d4 ( without the vacuum advance unit), early mk2 Cortina1500 & 1300 had either Lucas or Autolite distributors . Dynamo charging was in all MK1 , MK2( some later 1600E had alternator option - esp if a HRW was fitted) & some lower spec MK3 up to 1973 had the same Lucas unit as the earlier cars ! 1966/ 67 was the approximate change over date to Negative earth on the Kent engined cars .

Fantastic video. Great shame that you weren't able to get it started. I've saved this video to enjoy on a day off with a hopefull quiet moment, plus a coffee, total absolute bliss, as I've been a ford lover all my life. As a mk1 cortina was my first ever car. Plus I've always been around Ford cars plus at work escort and transit vans plus a fleet of ford trucks in the 80's. You even also managed to scratch another itch of mine and that's mini's, with the primrose yellow one in the background. Thanks Johnny, please keep up the great work. I am now looking forward to the mk2 cortina video.

You should try connecting two batteries in series direct to the starter (disconnect the lead to the starter from the solenoid to isolate the rest of the electric system from 24v) it will spin it quickly then!
Worst that will happen is you will need to rebuild the starter but it sounds like thats the case anyway.

The brushes on the starter are probably stuck and corroded. A neighbour had one of these new and would give me a lift to school on his way to work. It was kept outside and on winter mornings there'd be him, his missus, 10 year-old me and his daughter all sitting in it with the engine running and the windows shut while he took huge draws on a Player's No.6 and blew the smoke on the windscreen to clear it. This took a good 5 minutes. I'm amazed we survived those days.

A nice coincidence here as the 1963, March to May filming of 'Carry on Cabby' featured the Consull Cortina Super MK1s. They were supplied by the Ford Motor Company as a way of promoting the new model and even some of the posters were sponsored by them using the slogan 'Britain's Newest Film Star - The new Consul Cortina Super - The small car with the big difference'.

    That was brilliant!!
I guessed right about it being a consul cortina. My one was a light blue 1963 version with steering column gear change (852 BRV) I brought it off a bloke at work over 40 years ago now so in fact it would be 60 years old if it still exists. I had it for a couple of years till the lure of a MKII 1600E made me sell it.
I'm sure it will only need a good service and probably a change of starter to get it going. Lets hope it gets a good home, it looks in really good condition.
Great memories of that car, thanks for bringing them back!!

What is it about seeing old motors rescued from premature deep sleep and (hopefully) given a new lease of life ? 🙂 In 1978 my dad bought a mk 1 Cortina 1600GT, 2 door in green and white. It was brilliant and took all 5 of us on many family journeys, happy days. Although sadly the top mounts and wings eventually corroded beyond practical repair for those days and that was the end for that car. I have always really liked the mk 1 with the painted metal dash and its unique rear lights and other little touches later models didnt seem to have. Hope this car ends up having a quality restoration and a second life in regular use. They should be used, not put to sleep in a dark damp corner and forgotten..... Great channel with a simple but very enjoyable format, thanks 👍

I had one of these new and traded it in for a Mk1 Lotus Cortina with the A frame suspension. Two things come to mind, condenser and started motor windings. There was also a carbon button in the centre of the distributor cap that connected to the rotor button. they were spring loaded and sometimes fell out. You could use the centre of a D battery for the button and a spring from a ball point click pen. Also track down the ignition relay and open it up and clean the contacts. Jonny you should contact Ryobi and get them to supply you with an impact wrench, power ratchet handle and a compressor on 18+ system. With the number of views you get you should have a good case for some sponsor support.

Fantastic discovery and brilliant video, well done - great entertainment, thanks Jonny - there was an old man in our village who operated an unofficial taxi service with an old mk1 cortina - it drove with a very strangely wallowey unsteady ride, sort of surging, rolling back and forth even though the speed was steady ? - I remember when in our early teens going the 12 miles to Bodmin cinema with my mates in it, where we passed on something called 'starwars' favouring a film named 'convoy' as it's poster had crashing trucks and police cars and a woman in a bikini where the other poster had men in plastic drainpipe suits and a man dressed like a sasquatch ! - the ride home was as exciting as the film we had just seen, especially when the complete exhaust fell off from the down pipe back !

Fascinating video. Takes me back to my late teenage years in southern Scotland. My dad had a garage (Ford) and had a taxi service too. He got two 4-door Cortinas… Probably first year models. Registrations: PKS 220 and PKS 323. (Yes, I know, it’s weird, but registration numbers was a thing in the 1960’s.) If I’m not mistaken, bench seats in front, column shift. Later he had the good fortune to have a Cortina GT… Leaving home for a trip to the highlands a new Pirelli Cinturato got shredded. He was NOT happy about that! Later he rebuilt a written-off Lotus Cortina. Great memories.
