"It's irresponsible to buy a pet that you can't/won't provide for" is probably the most important thing you said in the entire video. Nothing drives me up a wall more than hearing someone say "But I can't afford such and such a product!" Then don't get a pet. That's like having a child and then complaining that you can't afford clothes for them, or a bed. Be prepared to assume FULL responsibility or don't get that animal at all. It's literally that simple.
Great info, and I always love the style of your videos; very straight forward and always helpful, not to mention super cute to watch. In The States, we consider 450 square inches to be suitable, but I'm so glad other countries and places have even higher standards! I've got a Detolf for my Winter White, but I see some people with their awesome D.I.Y. cages and I get so jealous! I'm not that crafty though. Store bought works for me!

Tanya Foster Hey! I have a detolf too. That's cool. I completely agree with you, about what VanillaHamHam said.
I always suggest cages 450 square inches at the bare BARE minimum. With 650+ being extremely recommended. Some hamsters show signs of stress even in cages of 1,000 squares inches or more.
      The bigger the better!

I'm so glad I found your channel! We bought our son a dwarf hamster 6 weeks ago and purchased the ready to go cage that petco suggested. I had no clue it was too small for him or that he could hurt his teeth on the bars. We also were told their diet was nothing special! If it wasn't for you and channels like yours who knows how little Chewert would be doing! We made him a big, roomy bin cage and he LOVES all that space. Can't thank you enough!!

Kuroi Kenshi actually, sugar does NOT mean diabetes. It's more of a generic problem due to the severe inbreeding of hamsters in mills.

Remember to put a lot of toys (chew toys, climbing toys etc) and a lot of hiding places (tubes, huts, plastic igloos) in the cage!

You really have a talent with how you present things in your videos, VanillaHamHam! :) You crammed a lot of good information into this, but it wasn't at all tedious or boring to watch. Your graphics and everything are top notch and so so cute! It's also very kind of you to have a playlist to showcase other UA-camr's DIY cage videos and thank you for including some of my videos as well! That's sweet of you! 💜 Your channel has always been amazing, but it's even more amazing now that you've started including these informational videos. They will help teach so many people! 🐹

    • @Yeewen88
      @Yeewen88 4 роки тому

Ray Ortiz what is the width and length measurements to work out (sq inches), it can vary per 40 gallon breeder. VanillaHamHam believes the BARE minimum should be 620sq inches and bigger is better so you probably should upgrade, especially if it’s a Syrian. Great that you’ll upgrade though.

"But I can't afford a big hamster cage" then don't even think about the rest, I think I spent 200€ in toys, bedding and cage... just everything for him to have a happy life. So yes, this is not a choice you make without thinking...

I love the amount of effort you are putting into these recent information videos, When I was little we had a hamster and it was always aggressive, after watching these videos I understand know that the cage we kept it in wasn't suitable at all! Luckily we gave it away because we got a dog and for the last years of its life it got a better home, I hope this video shines light on many hamster owners on getting the optimum quality of life for their hamsters :D

I really needed this video. My brother and his girlfriend surprised me with a hamster last month for my birthday and while I'm so grateful, I was not prepared to properly care for a hamster and I'm in the process of getting him a new enclosure. So thank you so much for the ideas

This is a great video! My favorite part is where you state that if someone can't provide the proper home then a hamster isn't the right pet. There have been many times when I had wanted to tell people this exact statement but I can't because I would get in trouble at work. All I can do is educate them on the proper care of the hamsters and hope they listen.

NANapoli lots of animals will eat their stillborn babies. It's like recycling. The baby is dead and therefor "useless" and the mother gets to regain the energy lost in conceiving and giving birth.

My Russian dwarf hamster named Mewtwo (yup, the Pokémon lol!) is very happy with his new cage! I watched this video before buying it so I knew decent stuff about suitable homes for hamsters. It has a log house filled with special hamster homing cotton I got at the pet shop and it has a silent spinning wheel, attachable tubes on the sides with little sleeping houses connected to them, one of them I used as a potty and one as a sleeping house :3 and has a bowl with water+ a bottle of water with one of those special balls inside, a food bowl and chewing bars and sticks with seeds on them you can hang up on the top bars. Mewtwo loves his new home and I am glad you made this video!

+Drawing blobfishy!!! Glad you're doing research, it sounds like a great home! But I'm a bit concerned about the cotton bedding, as hamsters can choke on it, among other dangers, and some people's hamsters have actually died because of it. You can learn more here: www.hamsteradvice.com/ban-fluffy-bedding.html Something paper-based like tissue is best as it can dissolve if they accidentally swallow some

"It's irresponsible to buy a pet that you can't provide for" - that is SO true! If you can't afford a decent cage (and some of these cages can be bought quite cheap), then what happens to your hamster if it gets sick and needs emergency vet treatment? While most of our hamsters have never needed medical attention, our oldest dwarf hamster has been to the vet several times for neurological problems, claw clipping and an intestinal infection. If it wasn't for the antibiotics, she would have died. And none of those treatments come free! Of course, we love our hamster and pay her vet bills without hesitation so that she can stay alive, healthy and happy. We couldn't have known before we adopted her that she would get sick, as she didn't develop any health problems until later in life. But you have to be prepared - it's a living creature, it's your pet and it's your responsibility to take care of their needs.
Okay, rant over! I'd just like to add, for UK hamster owners, the Asda 150lt bin also makes a great cage. It doesn't cost much, and can be delivered to your home.

I just got my first hamster yesterday! (Mellow is his name) I set up a 40 gallon tank for him, and he seems to be enjoying it. It's hard to tell while he is acclimating though. I did learn that he LOVES to burrow, so after I clean his cage for the first time, I'll be putting in more bedding for him! He also loves his sweet potato treats! I can't wait until I get to hold him, it's hard to wait, but I know it's for the best.

I have a hamster named Daisy and she loves her cage I bought her from Pets At Home. She doesn't bar chew, she likes to climb sometimes. She will play on her silent spinner at night, she will play with her toys all the time, and she will sleep in her cheese house during the day. Sometimes hamsters prefer smaller cages to big cages. ❤️🌸

Awsome video! I love it so much, I keep watching it over and over lol! I am actually in a process of making XL Billy cage, and when I am done I will hopefully do a video on it because I found a little trick, so I am going to spend 60 to 65 euros in total! #masivesavings haha! Btw. I do need to tell that sides of Detolf are 37 by 43 cm, and if you turn it on the bigger side (43 cm one) you actually get like 300 sq. inches more which is great! Also, I always get totally blown away with how much effort and work you put in your videos, and hamster :) Vanilla must be the happiest hamster on Earth!

Bare Minimum for DWARFS its 430 sq inches (usually it’s more, like 450,but the ABSOLUTE bare minimum it’s 410 sq inches of floorspace) so,a 106 qt bin cage or more it’s ok since it has 434 sq inches from the base and 453 if you add a good amount of bedding, but bigger it’s better.

This is so helpful! I did some research on a hamster cage and it turns out mine is WAY too small! (only 200 sq. in!) so i'm going to try and get a new cage ASAP.

i suddenly have an idea, i have seen a lot of rabbit cage that is in decent size for hamster but the bars are too wide, so i think we could cover the wires with mesh, then the hamster can't get out while enjoy a big space. the design of rabbit cage also makes it easy to clean because there is a litter tray.
diy cage is difficult for many people, so i think this could be a easier alternative.

Great video! I think this is great for people that aren't sure what to get. The pros and cons are very clear, and the afterword was super meaningful. I have a 100 x 60 DIY cage that I made for my hamster. It was inspired by ErinsAnimals newest DIY cage the she made for Iodine. My hamster is loving it, and I can't imagine him going back to his 5,000 sq centimetre cage.

I love these videos but it also makes me sad to recall my little brother's pet hamster from when we were kids...the poor thing had a small cage and probably a miserable existence cooped up in the guest room by itself :(( it's been years but I still feel guilty about it. Wish we had been educated about hamsters before getting one!

I currently have 2 hamsters which I both keep in cages. Neither cage is shown here because I think they don't make it anymore but I suggest doing a lot of research about different cages if you choose to get a cage for your hamster. I have one cage that I have housed to different hamsters in so it shows a bit of year and tear and I've never had any problem with escaping. The only problem with it is that a bar came loose but I have another cage if I get another hamster. My other cage is also a very nice one and my hamster has never escaped from it but there isn't a lot of room for things such as a hut and I even had problems finding a place for the food bowl.

Question! How difficult is it to clean your cage, it seems hard and I know the toys are movable and your hamster is potty trained. I just want to know how difficult it can be for you and Vanilla.
Also where should I place my hamster when I clean their cage? Should I keep them inside or put them in a separate area?

Do you know if most this information is the same for mice? Mice and hamsters are closely related and pretty much the only differences are that hamsters have pouches, mice have tails, and mice are generally smaller. I've been looking to get a new mouse cage but they aren't really marketed. I know she likes to chew things and burrow, so I have to be careful, especially with cages that are plastic/wood and have bars. She can squeeze through most bars and will chew the bottoms.
If anyone with experience could give some advice and maybe even recommendations, I would REALLY appreciate it!!!
