    I just finished courses at IBCA in phoenix AR (SCA brewing, Green Coffee, Sensory, and Roasting) and I am super pumped. I was wondering were you buy your green coffee and do you ever get a sample bag and cup it before you pull the trigger on the bigger bag? If thats a yes, do you have a small roaster for that purpose?
    How good is Mill city roasters and which one do you use
    do you use the software, Cropster to track your roasting profiles?

I have done a lot of research over the years and thought that doing it this way would allow me to at least get my foot in the door, but I don't think so. And I just got an email today from my roaster telling me that if I don't sell more coffee I can't continue with my wholesale prices.

    i just found your channel yesterday. Thank you for your fresh outlook on coffee "business". I have been roasting my own beans for 9 years now. I started out with a popcorn popper with beans from Sweet Maria's. Then I began to get beans from Smokin' Beans and upgraded to a Gene' roaster. I did that for several years and now get beans from Coban Trade and am looking to upgrade my roasting to the next level. My wife has a small store that I sell at but most of my sales has been word of mouth and friends, plus my co-workers at my day job have ordered around 20lbs of coffee to be delivered by next week. What other wholesale bean providers have you had good experience with? My brother just created a fantastic logo for me. I am super stoked about going to the next level!

      @RobPirieCedarOtaCoffee  3 роки тому

      Hey!! Thanks so much for checking my videos out Devin! for cupping, I would say put the focus more on consistency than process. I switch it up. Sometimes I blind test, sometimes I know exactly what is in each cup. Sometimes I cup the same coffee on different dates (Same brand of coffee 3 months old, 2 months old, and then a week old) to see when it starts to break down. What does it taste like 6 months old. What about testing all dark coffee together and all light coffees together. For me, it was most important to make cupping a habit. In the beginning, I may cup for 2 days and then not do it for a month and then cup again. it was not until i started cuppig daily or every other day that I really started to get the hang of it. In shorty just cup alot and mix it up. If you get comfortable one way then add different variables and coffees. All naturals, all washed, find a Robusta and cup it. #tryallthethings! lol

I would literally hit some of them up and just let them know you are interested and see if any will help. Cafe Imports, Ally, Genuine origin will all ship to Canada I imagine. Some of the local roasters may sell you small quantities if you ask them. That would cut out shipment and all that for you if you are only getting say a pound to roast with.

Over the 2020 year, I started thinking about how much buying coffee retail was costing me over the course of a year. So, i started teaching myself about roasting at home, then about where to get beans to roast. Then after i got proficient, i started sending beans to friends and family in the mail. In short, what started as an enjoyable hobby, had turned into a viable business venture with some friends. We started a business plan in Feb 2021, and are now Online selling our own blend.

    Love your videos. Such a down to earth guy, and I think that alone will take you farther than you think in your business venture. A few honorable mentions to add to your list. Do - Contact you're local city/state health department. You may find out you cannot roast out of your house. Each state is different. Do - Find your buyer first. I roasted out of a air popcorn popper, gave some samples to friends, who gave some to their friends. Now everyone wants a bag. I came to the conclusion if I can acquire customers with a air popper, then imagine what I can do with a commercial roaster. Do - Utilize your local small business support organizations. Most states have these. Here it's S.C.O.R.E. It's free, and they will help you step, by step. Like you said, it's a long runway. But if you do the math, coffee has one of the highest profit margins, in the end it should pay off. Keep the videos coming, and I'll be ordering some product to taste soon.

    • @RobPirieCedarOtaCoffee
      @RobPirieCedarOtaCoffee  4 роки тому +1

      Thanks so much buddy!! You don’t really need a big space if you are just going to be roasting for yourself. If you get a small 200 - 400 gram machine it want be that loud and the smoke will be no worse than cooking on the stove if you are roasting lighter coffee. Now a 2kg and up machine will put out a good bit of smoke. Enough for your neighbors or city to complain about possibly. As far as the gasses... there has been research that there are carcinogens in the smoke and that can cause cancer. On a small roaster I don’t think it will be enough to remotely worry about. Larger roaster yes. What’s your plans or goals with it? Roast from home or startup?

It is not quite big enough to really roast the quantity needed to make money. But it was expensive enough that I cant really go out and upgrade to a 6kg or 10kg machine. Would definitely agree on starting with a larger roaster once you launch. It is such a tough decision because roasters are a ton of money at that size and you really have to believe that you can stick it out, stay interested, and grow fast enough to make it all work.

      That is probably the toughest obstacle when starting out. It differs from state to state. Depending on where you live there may be a "cottage food law" that covers you say up to $25,000 in sales. But where I live the cottage food law does not apply to coffee. Here we have to have a commercial kitchen, all products licensed, and inspected, etc. So like every horrible answer... It depends. lol

I wish I would of saved up for larger roaster though and learned more about roasting before I spent that much on one. There are smaller machines like the Kaldi and Kaldi wide, Huky 500 and others that are great too. Problem is it is hard to scale with such a small unit. So, without knowing your knowledge level, budget, and determination it’s hard to say. Mill City I hear is good and Buckeye basically sells Bideli roasters too that way you don’t have to go through alibaba. You pay more though.

      Hey buddy! I am horrible with email. So much is spam and promotionals now that I know I miss a lot on there. I need to clean it up one day. What type of machine are you roasting on? I personally start off with minimal airflow in the beginning and I will increase it towards the end of the roast. This allows the harsh smoke and vapor to be pushed out much better. Without seeing a picture I can not really advice on the differences in knobs.
      5 min roasts are very fast. I usually shoot for first crack around 8-9 mins and drop around 10-11 minutes depending on who I am roasting for and how light/dark I am roasting. 5 mins is not enough time for the entire coffee bean to develop in. You most likely are getting some grassy underdeveloped tastes.
      I would wait at least 2 days to start cupping your coffee. But you can cup it the day of and consecutive days to train your pallet to detect that carbon like flavor.
      Hope all this is helpful my friend and best of luck roasting!!!

      I would argue that if it is your passion and dream the little things are the most important. Details are key in the coffee game and rather than going broke in year like so many do, spend time working in the industry and saving money. Just going for it generally works for those who already have a lot of knowledge and experience. gaining the knowledge from others who have year of experience will allow you to be better at what you do and avoid constant issues that arise from inexperience operators. My advise spend a year or two gaining the knowledge through employment and save some cash, then go for it.
