I love roasting coffee with the 4 Gene Cafe’s I have lined up. I’ll give you a piece-o-my mind Rob, I’ve read a couple thick books on roasting that took me days to read, and in 10 min, you pretty much said everything that needs said!!..including a couple slurps of good jo in there 🤣 You are very clear, accurate, and succinct! Great job!
My friend and I have been going through a rough time but now we're getting into home roasting coffee. It's a really nice distraction from some of the madness out there and we're learning so much.
Heck ya buddy! It definitely is almost like a form of meditation. I get so focused on something as simple as coffee and all the worries just start to drift away. Then roast, cup, experiment, repeat. Glad to hear you guys are finding an outlet. Definitely important during these times. Lord knows we all need something!
Completely agree man! Trying to get out of the hobbit stage and eventually do (something in coffee) full time. Truly appreciate you watching my friend and have a blessed New Year!
Hey Rob, I'm working on going farm to cup out here in in Cambodia. Just ordered my kaldi Mini and can't wait to cut my teeth. Thank you for the inspiration and I look forward to the development of your farming series
Yes indeed buddy! Cambodia! Can’t wait to visit one day. Angkor Wat is in my must see list! That place looks insane! Have you been? Also, hit me up if you want to join the podcast when I get it going. Would love to hear your experience.
Thanks buddy! Ya, I feel there is so many things that go into it that sometimes we get lost in our little area of the chain. Thanks so much for watching my friend!
Best regards from Germany. Your topics are very close to the need of people like me and absolutely to the point! Mostly i appreciate the no schnick schnack of yours. (German for unnecessary stuff)
Man I am glad to hear that! Truly appreciate the feedback. I like making this type of video and I am thinking of doing one on process methods. I may put that in the line up. Truly appreciate you watching and can’t wait to visit Germany one day! On the bucket list!
Great video Rob, thank you! I started reading a bunch of books on coffee recently and it really does open your eyes to how much goes into a good cup. I've been roasting for about half a year now and noting compares to fresh roasted specialty coffee.
Exactly man! Once you play a role in how the cup tastes via roasting/brewing it makes the coffee so much better. Truly appreciate you checking out the video buddy! Have a blessed new year!
I have a hive roaster I am going to be showing soon and as soon as I get the Bideli re-installed I am going to do a full proper roast review on it. Thanks for watching and thanks for the feedback. I will definitely be working that in for sure! Have a blessed new year Fred!
yes rob i agree that black bunt charcoal looking coffee has no business occupying my espresso machine! i believe that peope who have experienced coffee roasted to a proper level without all of the coffee flavor burnt out of it would never want the charroast coffee again.
Thanks so much buddy! I truly appreciate you checking it out! I do not have my roaster up and going at the moment. I just finished moving and have not set the building back up yet. That is my plan in the next couple of months to get it all back together and operating. I am just "home roasting" at the moment really.
Rob, best wishes on your roasting endeavors. Thanks for the videos.. I am also thinking of jumping head first into a roasting business. What would you say time frame and how many roasts would be needed for a consistent quality roast to make it to retail for your average joe. Also which roaster would you start with knowing you were going in to this full time. Thanks again, Mark East Texas
If I was going in full time definitely a 6 kg roaster or bigger. It really depends on how much you read and how fast you learn but just guesstimating I did at least 50 roasts on a small Kaldi before I started selling to friends and family. Also you can fast track it if you hire or seek a mentor to teach you how. Where are you located?
Haha just saw East Texas! It may be worth flying to a roasting school like mill city if you are really serious about it. There are smaller roaster like Tired Eyes coffee who is starting to offer roasting classes. If you are close to Houston or Dallas I would definitely seek out some pretty cool roasters around there and see if any would be willing to give you a couple lessons. That could save you weeks/months of trial and error. Hope this helps!
As always, a great video indeed! Man, I l am following everything and looking forward to the next ones. May God bless your 2021. I would like to hear more about your thoughts regarding Bideli, is it possible?
Thanks man! It is indeed! I am actually in the process of trying to get my building set back up. I have a few tasks I need to complete before I do though. Once I get it back up and going I will do a video on it and give my thoughts on it and do a proper roast review with it. Thanks so much for watching and have a blessed 2021 as well!
Do the roasting profiles that are developed on the Ikawa transfer over to your larger roaster? I know the Ikawa is a new toy, but have you tried it yet? Also, do you find there to be a difference between roasts with electric heat vs gas? I'm assuming there will be some tweaking involved. Just wondering. Thanks
I don’t think it can transfer to any machine really. I think the main purpose is to see what potential the coffee has and then use the data from the ikawa to make an educated guess on where to start roasting on a larger machine. The ikawa is just small enough to try a coffee 20 different ways and not spend a fortune burning through green coffee. And ya it roast different then gas I feel. Air roasters like this one are super uniform. The way you hear the machine changing to match the curve exactly is something very unique. If you find the right spot on a larger roaster it can roast very similar coffee as the ikawa I feel.
Hey Rob, Happy New Year brother! Great to see you filming/posting again man!! Hope all is well for ya, I will shoot you a message on Instagram this weekend...Cheers, Rick

Hey man, recently found your videos. Appreciate the info and transparency. I'm looking to try lighter roasts, got any quick tips while i wait on the educational materials?
Are you looking to roast your own light roasts or are you referring to trying some good light roast coffees? For roasting try dropping the coffee right after first crack up to a minute or so and if you are trying to find some good light roast to taste then usually Ethiopians, Kenyans and some Costa Rican’s are usually roasted very light and are delicious. African coffee roasted light are some of the best in my opinion sonic you are roasting, I would start with some Africans and see what you get.
@@krawiecjarek I have the roastery down at the moment and I have priced it in the past to ship out of county and it is mind-blowing how expensive it is. I truly appreciate the support though! Hoping to get it back up and going this year for sure! Things have just been crazy.
How do you learn what "good" coffee is? When I've been drinking dark roast from either Big Brand pre-ground coffee in 2 lb tins or single cup "pods" for decades, and now I try "good" coffee, so far I don't like it. Trying to convert myself into a coffee sno.. uh, person, isn't working too well for me. That said, I am now grinding at home, and doing the Chemex, but still with dark roast.
That is one thing I hinted at in the video. Some people genuinely like the taste of dark coffee, especially if they are drinking dark coffee with nothing added. I do not think there is anything wrong with dark coffee at all because that is what New Orleans is kind of known for near me. I think once you start diving into different origins, different brew methods, and just tasting a bunch of coffee then you may eventually find some coffee you like better or it will just reaffirm that dark coffee is what you desire. That is my issue with this new "third wave" coffee. I do not want to make any brew method, roast method, or desired taste be the wrong way. If you like it, drink it!
Rob, how well does your Kaldi sample roasts translate to your larger roaster. Is there a big difference with the same beans, or is there close similarities? In other words did your kaldi help you greatly in your learning curve ?
The one I have not to well. I think if I had the Kaldi wide or Huky 500 it would translate better. But the cheap Kaldi is what I learned on and yes it gave me a great basic understanding of the roasting concepts.
@@RobPirieCedarOtaCoffee thank you so much for your time. So much to think about. Which way to go? Hope to have the opportunity to really pick your brain one day! Thanks again!!!☕
That’s a Kaldi roaster. But if you mean the oil funnel (it was new), that is what i use to make sure the beans flow in without spilling. I have a little video on the Kaldi. It was my first roaster that I started on. Still use it sometimes. Good machine and cheap.
