Rob, you just described the last 5 years of my life. This video would have saved me a bunch of time not having to discover all this on my own. I took an online course from Boot Coffee, read Rao’s book and got to roasting. Mill City Roasters course is a damn good binge watch. Tons more books and thousands of roasts later I’m still learning. No one ever talks about the dirty job of deep cleaning the coffee roaster and exhaust stack etc.

I just got hired as a roaster and I start my training tomorrow. Super excited about it. I have no experience and the owner of the shop said I should look up some videos before coming in tomorrow. This video was at the top of the list and I found it really informative, and helpful for more resources. It led me to watching the Mill City Roasters tutorial #1 which was great. Also, your voice rules. Keep it up!
Heck ya dude!! Good luck tomorrow. That’s super cool you are getting to learn at an actual roaster. That is going to propel your learning for sure. I always thought my voice sucked so it’s nice to actually hear otherwise! Figured I sounded to much like a hick for most. Again, truly appreciate you watching my videos and good luck tomorrow. Great video. I've been roasting all of the coffee I consume myself for about 2 years now. I started using a popcorn popper that I modified with an Arduino and a Solid State Relay to enable me to modulate the heat. That served me well for a long time, but I could only roast 85G batches and it was taking all my Saturday mornings to roast enough to have, and a little to share once in a while. I'm using a Chinese Wok now, on my stove. I can roast bigger batches, and the clean up is easier. I can spend less than half of the time roasting, but the drawback is that it is very labor intensive, constant stirring, and I am not always getting as good of roast uniformity as I'd like. Great job of pointing out so many great sources of information. More roads to go down...
Haha there seems to always be a new road to go down! I started on a little Kaldi and I hear you on the small batch size. I could do like 150grams so I was always having to do multiple batches to last me the week. It’s a fun journey though for sure! Hit me up with any questions and thanks again for watching my friend. Glad it was helpful.

No problem my friend and good luck on the journey! Puerto Rico has some great coffee. I can’t wait to see how it continues to improve as more people turn to specialty. Lots of opportunity there.
Myself when I go camping I have a cast iron pot with a crack in the bottom. I roast a few pounds a year for my own use. I have given some beans to freinds. They say that my coffee has a smoke flavor. Its fun to roast over a camp fire. And I injoy the smooth taste of whole bean brewed coffee. Thanks for your time. I like to share the stories.
@@RobPirieCedarOtaCoffee When I say whole bean I mean just that. Not ground or cracked. When we are at an re-enactment I would roast the beans over the fire as I said sometimes I would put a 1 inch square chunk of hickory or maple in with the beans. The wood would char much like the beans roast. Now you roast during the day then at night you take your bean in a 2 quart pot I take 3 hands full of beans put them in the water UN-ground. You hang your put near the edge of the fire careful not to boil your water. You leave your pot hang or sit next to your fire all night long. The next morning you build up your fire and put on you pot of coffee. Now as I tell people you have to cook your beans slow. Now cooking them slowly your coffee will not have that bitter bight like most coffee's do. You will have the smoothest tasting coffee you have ever had. Now I have met some people that thought they have tasted some really FINE coffee. This guy wanted to taste mine and I said the coffee was cold but didn't matter to him. It was the bottom of the pot. He tasted it and was amazed. So if you go to an event an if you see someone cooking there beans ask if you can have a taste of that whole been coffee. Oh ya never toss out your beans you just add another hand full and start the process all over again. Nice!
What!?!? I’m going to have to look into this! I live close to Port Hudson and they do them all the time and Williamsburg, Va puts on a good show as I was stationed near it for a bit. Where you do re-enactments at? What is your role usually?
@@RobPirieCedarOtaCoffee I'm from Minnesota and most of the events we go to are rendezvous not civil war re-enactments. I portray a mountain man or woods man seeing how we dont have mountains lol. Or I can go as a carpet bagger or gental man. I've been doing this for over 25 years. I love the stories of men that hunt for furs (fur trade Era) and the carry there green beans and roast them as they needed them. Fun stuff

Just bumped into this channel. It's awesome. I am from Kenya. Our family business for many years has been coffee farming. I personally do arabica coffee a farming. But that's all we do. We just farm and sell it red-fresh. I want to begin roasting and probably packaging. But I am GREEN. All the information I search is too much, I feel I need a roadmap. I will go through all your videos and those that you recommend, but is there like some cheat sheet that covers the roadmap of different kinds of roasting?
There is no cheat sheet or short cut. The short cut is to get a small roaster and just start roasting and learning. It takes hundreds of roasts to get good so the faster you can start the better chances to learn. Plus everything you are reading and learning will start to make more sense once you have some experience roasting. The advantage you will have later is the direct quality of the production side. Are you looking to start roasting as a business over there? Hit me up if you have any questions! Happy to help!
Thanks so much for all the information. Been into coffee for many years and recently decided to dive into coffee roasting. Love the video, thanks again.
Truly appreciate you watching my friend! Coffee roasting is a fun journey and your prior experience will make it that much more enjoyable. Thanks again for checking it out and hope it was useful to you!
Just found your channel and loving it. I'm trying coffee in my mid-life crisis, as it's cleaner in all ways than second hand cars, which you fall in love with, promise your wife you'll sell, that you buy with your heart and eyes instead of your brain........ It was fun though. Anyhoo, in an effort to stay awake for the many many how-to-fix-what-you-shouldn't-have-broken UA-cam videos on cars I got into coffee. Now hooked on coffee video reviews I bought a gene cafe cbr101. Had a lot of fun and then found an awesome looking hand pull espresso machine, the Flair Signature Pro. The fun ended at this point. The Flair looks fantastic and the reviews say it makes good espresso. After 2 weeks of sour then bitter shots as well as many hours cleaning coffee off my walls, clothes etc which was shooting off at all angles with each pull I bought a second hand mazer grinder then a smaller hopper so it would fit on my kitchen counter. Job done. Started selling coffee from the Gene to friends and family who loved it. Found a Gene Cafe 1200 at a great price and now sell to my surrounding villages. Like you I'm fortunate at the moment to still have a full time job to pay the bills until I properly hook my neighbors on my coffee and their friends. Quick question: The courses you mention for roasting, do you know if they're for traditional roasting machines which the Gene Cafe is not? ATB Gary
Hey Gary!! First of all, I apologize for replying so late. For some reason, UA-cam put this comment in the spam section and that does not show up on my phone but it does on my computer, and looks like I had a few that YT put in the spam folder. Anyway... Coffee and mid-life crisis go together for sure! haha. I have been thinking about trying the Flair out but after your experience, I may wait a bit. The courses that I have heard of and the one I took was on a gas drum roaster. It would be hard to transfer the training over to a Gene Cafe and vise versa. Hope that makes sense. Where you from by the way? I truly appreciate you checking out my video and again I apologize for getting back so late. I will check the spam section more now that I know it does that. Have a great Christmas and New Years' my friend!

You going to crush it!
A light hearted way of sharing information. Have an ikawa home. I need this. Self learning at its finest.
Haha thanks so much for the kind words! I truly appreciate hearing that! Good luck on your roasting journey!
Glad I came across this, google searches only take you so far. I've been looking to start roasting with hopes to eventually start a small business in the future. It all seems so daunting, but this helps along with the resources. Thanks!
No problem buddy! Glad you found it useful. Roasting is a fun journey and even if the business side does not work out you still have the skill to roast amazing coffee the rest of your life so it is a win win! haha Good luck on the journey my friend and thanks for watching!
I am a liberica coffee grower in Bohol, Philippines. Thanks for the knowledge.
Great video Rob, appreciate it man
No problem buddy! Glad it was helpful!
Great video. No waste of time. So much info in just over 12 minutes.
Love it. Thanks.
Thanks so much for watching buddy! Those were the biggest things that would have helped me in the beginning and I tried to keep it pretty specific. Let me know if you have any questions. You just getting into roasting?
You. are. so awesome for posting this. THANK YOU. I've been in coffee for a few seconds (7 years) and am just starting my roasting/business kick, and it's incredibly disorienting. THIS is EXACTLY the kind of video I need. Thank you thank you
No problem at all! I truly am happy it was helpful and hit me up with any questions! Always happy to help!
I ended up here (more like started, depending how you look at it) I got a dedicated smoker and i love it. I was like “maybe I can smoke some coffee..” 💡lol but watching this, turned me on to another hobby and will look into a dedicated roaster possibly. This was super informative, so with that being said, I’m off to it! Thanks! Peace and love to all

Hey Rob, wow all I have to say is your information on this video is hands down the best I seen in a whole year since researching, straight to the point & Resources, I don’t think there’s a video like yours, and I am starting a coffee brand now this month, and I met some coffee roasters that am about do business with here New Jersey, Everything you said and provided on this video is amazing for me! Thanks!!
Heck ya dude!! That’s so cool to hear! Anxious to hear how it goes! Do you have a name picked out yet?
Hey Rob, absolutely love your attitude and demeanour, I’ve watched a lot of rubbish and was pleasantly surprised to hear your take on coffee, life and being. Thanks honey and keep the info coming, very much appreciated xx
Oh wow! I truly appreciate that and really happy you enjoyed it! Roasting is a cool journey and I try and keep it light hearted and fun as possible. Thanks for watching and for the kind words!
I am considering roasting coffee for a side hustle / business. Thanks for this. I used to road coffee at a business decades ago. Now after roasting a few batches at home i am hooked . I remember those days of good coffee and want them back. I am excited for the process and know what it takes . But thank you for listing it all out . Yes it’s all about a plan. The legal part is what i am most concerned about . Roasting at. Home. In my home. Have to check out if i need a true class A chimney or not ? Or simply an exhaust tube. You get the idea. For now just having fun getting a bunch of roasts under my belt . Enjoying Costa Rica laminita right now . I’ll reach out again. Thanks
Seet maria's is great, their beans, site, and video are all great. I started out with Sweet Maria's by getting a whirly Pop that I still use, motorized. More often than not I get my beans from Bohdi Leaf, they have great beans and people there. Thanks for this video. You have some great information here.
Thanks so much my friend!! Ya I love sweet Maria’s. I follow their YT channel as well. Ol’boy on there has been all over the place and is so knowledgeable on the entire process. I would love to go with them one day and learn it all. I truly appreciate you watching and have a great year my friend! Happy roasting!!
Hi Rob, thank you for sharing these resources and for your witty, heartfelt, and completely authentic take on a very complex subject. Look forward to following your journey and hope to meet you someday to share a cup of coffee. All the best.
Thank you so much for the kind words! Coffee is indeed in the future for us! If you are ever in Louisiana hit me up!
Thanks for the video Rob, Nice plain and simple, looking forward to your next one on the dark art of cupping ! I've just joined Coffee Roasters Forum on FB, We're in UK, Stay Safe, Stay Roasting, Tim
You will not regret joining CR forum. There are some very experienced roasters in there! I truly appreciate you watching and the feedback! Hope all is well on your side of the pond and stay safe as well!
God damn ! You are the real genius !!!! To be honest, I jumped start the learning process by watching your videos, I make very good roasting after 3 attempt. One key point as mentioned in this video is, record down everything that you have done so that you learn how to refine your roasting profile. Thanks dude, you are just GREAT!
Haha thanks so much man! I truly appreciate the feed back and really appreciate you watching. Glad the video was helpful. How you been? Have you made the plunge yet?
Thanks Rob, I am going to try different beans to see how it goes. It is indeed a rabbit hole, but really fun! Cheers!
It is that. Happy roasting my friend!
You have a good day, Rob!
Greetings from Venezuela, I just want say thank you bro! I started an informal business (for now) and it has been very hard to research and improvise. This video is going to save me a lot of time and money, thank you!
Heck yes buddy! Congrats on taking the leap into entrepreneurship! It’s an exciting ride for sure. Truly glad to hear the videos have helped. Best of luck my friend!

Haha so good to hear my friend! I truly appreciate that! You planning on getting into roasting or have you been roasting awhile?
@@RobPirieCedarOtaCoffee I’ve roasted a few times in the stove and really enjoy the process. I’m interested in getting a small roaster and doing it as a hobby for a bit, maybe sell to friends and family.
Heck ya! There are some pretty decent smaller home machines out there now. It’s a rabbit hole so the search for better and better coffee will always haunt you! Haha

Gotta love a fellow southern dude shootin it straight
Haha yes indeed buddy! Truly appreciate you watching! Where you from?
Thank you SO much for this. I knew a lot of these resources, but I learned a lot of new ones, too.
I would love to see a Part 2 to the business side.
Thanks for checking it out Eric and I really appreciate the feedback. I think a part two would be great for this and I am thinking about collaborating with a larger roaster when I do it to go deeper into the weeds with it. Hope all has been well and stay safe my friend!
Thank you for all the information!! Also, thank you for keeping it simple and straightforward. You're also very entertaining! keep it up!!
So great to hear! Really happy it was useful! You planning on getting into roasting or have you been roasting for awhile?
@@RobPirieCedarOtaCoffee Ive been thinking about starting! i've been a barista for at least 2 years and i've really enjoyed it. i thought i'd like to roast my own beans.

Thanks so much! Great content! I was so excited about a fresh bag of coffee I bought that I made some in my french press and drove my friend a cup of coffee. I'm looking forward to roasting hopefully soon.
I just fumbled across your video and I heard you singing. Roasting is NOT for me but I loved watching and listening to your video.
Well heck ya buddy! I truly appreciate you checking it out. I never was to good at singing (or dancing) but I give it hell trying! Haha hope all has been well buddy and thanks again!
Thank you for this! I’ve been watching James Hoffman and roasting in a kettle pop. About to make the leap to buying an actual roaster!
Super cool!! Ya I watch Hoffman a good bit too. Hit me up if you have any questions. There are some really good deals on “used coffee equipment” page on Facebook. Sadly a lot of Roasters’s and coffee shops went out of business recently due to Covid. You may can find a good deal on a used roaster there. Good luck and thanks so much for watching!
Thank you for posting! I’m super excited about starting to roast.
It’s a fun journey for sure!
Amazing, literally one of the most informative and awesome videos. Thank you so much.
Haha glad to hear and thank you so much for checking it out! Really hope it was helpful and good luck on your journey!
Rob - how about a video on selling coffee? I’m really curious whether it’s best to toll roast, do online sales or just set out to establish a brand with restaurants (post-Covid world), hotels, etc. Perhaps all combinations but would love your input. You’re a great resource as I’m putting together my business plan. Looking to launch my business in mid-2021. Thank you for all you do!
I will defiantly put this one on my list of videos. People often ask me about pricing and selling and I think I want to pull a another roaster in to make that video that way we can discuss different options and what worked and didn’t. Thanks so much for letting me know! Will def try and get this one made up. Have a good weekend buddy and hit me up if you have any questions in the meantime. Good luck on your journey bro!!
Hey Rob! Just found this video today! I’m a fellow Louisianan! Love your video and will be watch a lot more! Thanks for doing these :)
Just got started roasting with a Fresh Roast machine and it is so interesting learning how deep the rabbit hole goes. Thank you for this video!
I haven't tried one of those yet but the air roasters make some pretty even roast. The rabbit hole turns into outer space eventually! haha Truly appreciate you watching and glad to hear the video was helpful. Hit me up with any questions and good luck on your journey!

A friend : hey do you know someone who could help me start roasting coffee?
Me: yepp. There is this PRO on youtube, Rob Pirie, follow in his footsteps and your set for life!
I love your short videos that you succeed in put a huge amount of information in short space of time!
Haha! Thanks so much man. I am an amateur just posing. lol I am no where near a pro yet. I am hoping these video help people get the basics and then run on their own. I would love to get to the pro status one day but I now realize I would have to quit my day job and pursue coffee full time. Hopefully soon that will be an option but not at the moment. Appreciate you watching and for the kind words!
Dreaming of starting in the business. I live in the heart of Puerto Rico where coffee is grown. Thanks for the tips.
No problem my friend and good luck on the journey! Puerto Rico has some great coffee. I can’t wait to see how it continues to improve as more people turn to specialty. Lots of opportunity there.

Not a problem at all my friend! Glad you found it helpful. You looking at getting into roasting? It’s a fun rabbit hole to go down for sure!
Rob Pirie - Cedar Ota Coffee yep just started a home business
Welcome to the journey my friend!
Heck ya! Camp fires make everything better! So when you say “whole bean brewed coffee” you don’t grind them or crush them at all? Never heard of that.
Fun stuff
Heck ya that sounds cool! Almost like a modern day Jeremiah Johnson!
Way to pull it all together. Well done Rob.
Thanks Ron! I truly appreciate that. I tried my best to widdle it down as the first cut was pretty long. I know attention spans are short now days so I was hoping the message compiled and came across good. Thanks again for watching my friend!

Great info, got myself some green beans, just deciding which roaster to get or try and source a 2nd hand one.
Second hand is a great option. Especially if you can cut out the shipping fees and stuff. There are some used coffee equipment Facebook pages that may have one available close to ya.
@@RobPirieCedarOtaCoffee Thanks Rob. Trying to source one in HK but people don't really home roast, green beans are expensive here. The SR800 looks good but I'll need a step down transformer for it....maybe too much hassle.

Shot the video this weekend and I am in the process of editing it now. Hoping to have it out by the weekend. Thanks for watching my friend and it is a great little roaster to start on.

This is fantastic information!
Glad it was helpful. Hit me up if you have any questions. Always happy to help.
Great video!!
Almost the same steps i walked starting the coffee roasting path..
Keep the flame alive!
Ps. To me, Rob Hoos' Modulating the Flavor Profile was the switch from "education" to "action"
Truly appreciate the feedback buddy! I’m going to do my best to keep it lit! Thanks for watching!
