Yes it was. But I always felt Bad Company was a weaker version of Free. BC was slightly more pop oriented, but they were so much more successful than Free. I was there for their debut tour and it was awesome. Happy it worked out for them.
They did relatively simple songs with basic arrangements, but they knew what they did best, and stayed in between the lanes. Very pure British blues-influenced-rock. Very different from Led Zeppelin, which is probably why LZ wanted them on their own Swansong label.
Bad Company guitarist Mick Ralphs was originally a founding member of Mott the Hoople. MTH was a rather schizophrenic band for their first four albums, alternating songs and vocals between Ralphs and Ian Hunter. When Bowie became involved for "All the Young Dudes," he encouraged Hunter to become the focal point/leader of the band. It was Ralphs' frustration over this that in part led to his leaving MTH to form Bad Co with Paul Rodgers. The other reason, which was well publicized at the time, was that Ralphs had written the song "Can't Get Enough" (which became Bad Co's first hit), but found that neither he nor Hunter had the range to sing it.
Paul Rodgers and Simon Kirke were in a band called Free before they formed Band Co. You really must have a listen to Free, with Paul Kossoff on guitar, Andy Fraser on bass. Still one of my favourite albums to this day, "Fire and Water", includes their famous song, "All Right Now". Please check out the title track or Mr. Big, but there isn't a bad track on the album. You will not be disappointed!
I bought Bad Company's Bad Company album when it came out. I like Five Finger Death Punch's version. My favorite song by Five Finger Death Punch is "Wrong Side Of Heaven." It has a really powerful video with the song.
This is the song that first got me interested in FFDP. They have done some other great covers: "blue on black" ( Kenny Wayne Shepard ) , "Gone away" ( Offspring ), " House of the rising sun" . They also have a lot of great original songs: "Wrong side of heaven", "Never enough", "Wash it all away", "the bleeding", "Jekyll and Hyde", "Got your six" and many more.
Blue on Black is an awesome cover! FFDP along with Brian May, Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Brantley Gilbert, done as a fund raiser for the Gary Sinise Foundation.
Hi Doug! Title tracks of eponymous albums... I'm familiar with 3... Black Sabbath, Bad Company and Iron Maiden... The B-52s self titled debut had a song called 52 Girls and Focus missed the boat by naming their album Focus Plays Focus (In and Out of Focus for international release) which opens and closes with Focus (instrumental) and Focus (vocal version) respectively... but that's neither here nor there. Bad Company was what we call a Super Group with its line-up culled from previously successful bands... Paul Rodgers and Simon Kirke from Free, Mick Ralphs from Mott the Hoople and Boz Burrell from King Crimson. Their debut album was the first album released on Led Zeppelin's new Swan Song label. Rock 'n' Roll Westerns are few and far between... some being Desperado by Alice Cooper, Doolin' Dalton and Desperado by The Eagles, Knockin' on Heaven's Door by Bob Dylan, Bad Company by Bad Company, I Feel like a Bullet (in the Gun of Robert Ford) by Elton John, Silver Dollar [a personal favorite] by April Wine, Blaze of Glory and Wanted: Dead or Alive by Bon Jovi and, of course, Rocky Raccoon by The Beatles! And thus ends another episode of Trivial Trivia with Max :) Cheers!
I'd add 'I Hung My Head' and 'Love Is Stronger than Justice' by Sting to your list. He's admitted to being a fan of westerns...as if those two songs weren't evidence enough.
@@sidneyvandykeii3169 yeah. I liked their first album fairly well, but after seeing them live I kinda stopped caring. It was a less a concert than an endless barrage of Ivan ranting about how metal they were while changing his t-shirt after every song... felt really fake, in other words.
Great song and a great cover…nice one! Couple of other famous ‘triple names’ - Black Sabbath album Black Sabbath song Black Sabbath, and Iron Maiden album Iron Maiden song Iron Maiden, Motorhead album Motorhead song Motorhead (although it did appear elsewhere)
I've seen 5FDP twice and both times before they played Bad Company they had all of us who were vets raise our hands and then told everyone else to shake our hands and thank us for what we've done. It's a pretty heavy moment. The song and video that will really get you is Wrong Side of Heaven. Makes me tear up every time I hear it.
Thank you for your service. Video for it nails me hard, every time. But, just hearing it sometimes gets me choked up as well. Was going to recommend he check out Gone Away both from FFDP and Offspring. Same song but different message and different musically as well....
From the name to the generic sound I’m not a “Death Punch” fan. But Bad Co with Rodgers soulful voice and Ralph’s on point guitar sound ( even in Mott), was simple, but irresistible!
Bad Company was a western novel by Louis L'amour. Hence the lines "Rebel souls, deserters we are called. Chose a gun and threw away the swords" they were confederates soldiers who formed their own outlaw bad after the civil war ended.
One thing most reacts do not take into account, or don't really understand the time period, everything that was going on.. I will never forget...I guess I am wanting you to feel what I felt at that time and that is insane to ask, yet here we are! ZZ Top, Bad Co, SRV, these pretty much 3 piece bands, was simple and amazing ...I get a lil breeze of the past at times listening to this, same with so many other tunes from then...I am about to be 68 so this is fabric of my life !
Audioslave and Sound Garden 👂maybe of Free “sky is burning.” Connection With Bad Company. Yes, great song, and a great group. Drop D? 👋death punch heard - “I Apologize” has a connection with me and my losses while walk in my addictions.
A great presentation of both the original Bad Company version and the Five Finger Death Punch version, Doug. I think you should do more of these original/cover comparisons if you can. You may also want to check out the Paul Rogers live in Glasgow DVD where he does a version of "Bad Company" that is just him and a piano. I also was lucky to hear Paul do the same solo live version as part of an interview with a local radio DJ. Haunting!
For reference, the tabs that I'm finding are detuned in different ways. The original Bad Company version is E♭ drop D♭ (whole guitar tuned down a half step, then the lowest string tuned down a full step after that,) and the FFDP version is in B Standard (whole guitar tuned down three steps.)
A fantastic song, album and band who’s musical catalog has stood the test of time. Paul Rodgers and Simon Kirke original members still tour as Bad Company and sound great. I enjoyed the Updated version by FFDP as well whom kept many components of the original yet made their version their own with a harder core sound. Nice reaction Doug…
So over the years ive see 5FDP 5 times(ironically) ...twice as the headline act …I can say I saw “Bad Company” before the studio version came out … I loved the original and I love the cover … Ivan Moody was part of the local rock scene in Denver for a good while before making it in Vegas …and is a great vocal talent … as the band evolved from covers like this & “House of the Rising Sun” …songs like “The Bleeding” “The Pride” “Remember Everything” really established their sound … then as they became a headliner, songs like “Wrong Side of Heaven” and more recent songs “A Little Bit Off” and another outstanding set of covers “Gone Away” & “Blue on Black” became digital media performance staples … 5FDP is defiantly worth checking out for the story telling video presentations with meaningful / emotional lyric and vocals that brings songs to another level!!
I wonder how much these guys had been listening to Jethro Tull's 1971 Locomotive Breath. There's a riff that's almost an exact quote from it, and overall the song feels like begging for Ian Anderson to come in with his flute.
Love these videos where you show an original song and a cover by another band!!! A great song I would suggest is Godzilla, of coarse by Blue Oyster Cult but the cover by Fu Manchu is great!!! Very meaty, love stoner rock
Doug, firstly, thank you for your amazing content. Have you done a reaction to Angel of Salvation from the band Galneryus? If not, you're in for a treat! They're a superb Japanese neoclassical metal outfit I'm sure you'll love. Cheers!
I had never heard the cover from FFDP. Brilliant! They really bring the song a very different feel. If you are into this great British blues rock stuff, check out the early Whitesnake albums. Songs like "Walkin' In The Shadow Of The Blues", "Ain't Gonna Cry No More", "Child Of Babylon", "Till The Day I Die" or "Trouble" are prime example of rock meets blues meets soul music.
I had this album on 8-track back in the seventies in high school. Got interested on the band after hearing Free doing "Alright Now" in the late sixties. Listened to his solo stuff and with the band "The Firm" and later when he toured with Queen in the early two thousands.
Hey Doug, another great comparison of versions would be Mr Big by Free and then covered by Mr Big. Even if you don’t do this song you really need to get som Mr Big on the channel, awesome musicians. Keep rockin’ 🤘
this band encourages military (past and present). please check out "the pride", "Wash it all away" and "jecjyll and Hyde", they're awesome, Doug.have a toke and a drink!
@14:00 I always thought he sounded like John Rambo on this part of the song. Go and watch both First Blood and Rambo. Even the lyrics match what Rambo would say.
I love seeing you compare original and covers. I have two suggestions in the same idea. "The Real Me" from the Who covered by WASP. And "Time" from Pink Floyd covered by Wrathchild America
If you're going to dive more into Five Finger Death Punch, definitely recommend Wrong Side of Heaven or Far From Home , to start off with. 2 easy, melodic, and beautiful songs.
I don't know if anyone else noticed this, but it sounded to me like during the remastering of the Bad Company recording they brought the instruments forward and faded his voice. Paul Rodgers voice is, to me, one of the best features of the group. I love this song but it didn't sound quite right.
Paul Rogers said in an interview that people thought that the band was named for the Jeff Bridges movie but in reality it was the book of morals that Doug mentioned in the beginning.
Can you do a combo reaction of Phil Collins - In the air tonight vs Nonpoint - In the air tonight? That'll be a nice one i think. Keep up the good work Doug!
Fascinating episode, Doug; since you seem interested in metal covers, have you checked out Dream Theater's covers? There's quite a smorgasbord on the 'A Change of Seasons' EP.
You should really listen and watch FFDPs „Wrong Side of Heaven“, I‘m very interested in your thoughts on this topic. It‘s the only metal song that heavily tears me up EVERY TIME when watching the video.
I love the Side by Side comparison. This could be done with a few songs by Metallica. Example: listen Blue Oyster Cult: Astronomy. Then listen to the Metallica cover.
Paul Rodgers' backing band, but not much more. I listened to the first couple of albums a bit when they were released but my interest quickly waned. Saw them on the Desolation Angels tour, which may have been their fifth album (?), and it ranks as one of the most boring rock concerts I ever went to. Very pedestrian, by the numbers, unadventurous, uninspiring. Militaristic content of the metal band's video cover version is nauseating.
The entire first LP from Bad Co is classic
Yes it was. But I always felt Bad Company was a weaker version of Free. BC was slightly more pop oriented, but they were so much more successful than Free. I was there for their debut tour and it was awesome. Happy it worked out for them.
@@robertthurman9866They were complete ROCK AND ROLL, while Free was more blues rock.
Bad Co. was NOT Pop!

One of the very best voices in rock ‘n’ roll. I wore that album out in the 70s.
Bad company, by Bad Company, off the album Bad Company
Just like Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden and Motörhead etc. They've all done the "triple".

They played at Camp Stryker in Iraq 2010. Sadly i was on Duty that night but could hear them playing so was just like being there. Great night
