On this very special #throwbackthursday edition of #thedailydoug, we're celebrating our 2nd anniversary of doing these reaction-style videos. It was January 26, 2021 that I recorded and published my reaction to Iron Maiden's Fear of the Dark as the 44th episode in my Daily Doug series. Now, we're at episode 518 and going strong! I had fun looking back at this reaction from two years ago. I hope you enjoy!

This is like watching a metal head watching a classical musician watching a metal band. 😂❤
this comment is perfect
My thoughts exactly!
While being a metalhead yourself.
😂😂😂
🤣
I was homeless as I watched it now I run the hanging department at Goodwill . We went through a lot together.
Damn, congrats
Congrats man!
@@maximan4363 I would be nothing without the Creator.
@@lukanovak1492 Doug and Megan helped me through a very hard ship.
@@dmstewart66 Goodwill did a documentary about my life last month I'll let you know when it comes out. God bless you.
This was fun, congratulations on the milestone. The "wouldn't pay money" to see Iron Maiden line is a crack up. Us Maiden fan's knew that thought would not last long!
I paid money to see Maiden as recently as September. Quite a show, and Bruce Dickinson hasn't lost a step. He did call me out personally for having my hands at my sides. Something like "Get your f***ing hands up! You think I don't see you, but I do" while pointing right at me (practically everyone else was waving their hands or shaking their fists). I'm not a demonstrative fan, and it seems he didn't appreciate that.
@@reliantncc1864 Lol, I feel you :-) I am also not that animate at gigs, but it is a long time since I was in the front rows for Bruce to be able to see me :-)
That was actually the only truth... Agreeing with "outro like the intro" after 2 years means that he is not listening to Iron Maiden, besides his profitable reaction videos. So fake...
@@filzand1477 jelous..?
@@seelenwinter6662 No, just a whistleblower 😎 Read my comment, not this answer, where I fully explain, so everyone understands.
I love watching these professional musicians and composers very slowly turn into one of us. 😄
totally agree! LOL

The 3- guitar attack was the result when Adrian Smith left the band in 1980 and was replaced by Janick Gers. When Smith came back in '99 (along with Dickinson), they decided to keep Gers in the lineup, since he had worked with Bruce's solo endeavor.
*1990 bud 👍
Smith wasn't even in Iron Maiden yet in 1980. He replaced Dennis Stratton in 1981.
@@SylviusTheMad actually smith joined in November 1980 for touring
Edit: he first played with them for a tv show, so there's footage of that: ua-cam.com/video/H7szV9zTakk/v-deo.html
@@SylviusTheMad Smith replaced Stratton in October 1980 after he was dismissed from the band.
Steve Harris - bass, backing vocals (1975-present), keyboards (1988, 1998-present)
Dave Murray - guitars (1976-1977, 1978-present)
Adrian Smith - guitars, backing vocals (1980-1990, 1999-present), keyboards (1988)
Bruce Dickinson - lead vocals (1981-1993, 1999-present), piano (2015)

@@busimagen That's interesting...Though I think Bruce would drown anyone out from the power of his voice. Maybe Paul and Blaze would be a better fit..
Iron Maiden brings all metal fans together. Thanks for the reactions to one of the best metal bands
I was in my second year of my music degree, can’t tell you how useful it was to have a professor looking at music I knew inside out, and when you did Ancient Mariner, I had a reference for what augmented chords sounded like (I’m a drummer, so always found keys and chords more difficult to place in my head, all of a sudden, I had an easy reference, I passed with a distinction, cheers Doug 🤘)
When Bruce Dickinson returned to Iron Maiden he demanded to have also back Adrian Smith who was with him at his solo attempt back then (Accident of birth was the best album of that era).
At that time Iron Maiden had Janick Gers as their second guitarist, so Harris decided to have three guitarists.
Why do I write all these. I have seen Iron Maiden live every single time they have played live in Athens, Greece since 1988 -I was 17.
YOU CAN HEAR THE THREE GUITARS AT THE LIVES! It is amazing
I hadn't heard the personal circumstances re covid and teaching before. Sounds like a difficult time, I'm glad you decided to go through with reactions and analysis on youtube. Yours is one of a small number of music youtube channels I regularly come back to and has been a part of my own recent musical journey.
Ditto! Along with Rick Beato, The Charismatic Voice, and a very small number of others.
For me the others are The Charismatic Voice and 12tone. After that it's mostly guitar specific stuff.
Good choices. It would be cool if Doug and Elizabeth or Rick Beato would do a video together.
@@EdwardRLyons Doug, Beato and Charismatic Voice are also amongst my favourites. Maybe another 2 or 3 that I watch on a regular basis.
I have enjoyed watching many of Doug's reaction videos especially the live shows. But I hope we don't have to suffer being told that IM are in E minor so often. That was sorted by a professional guitar player who explained that to us which Doug may have missed LOL. Iron Maiden is not so much a heavy metal band. Considered now a prog rock in a sense as most of their music is at least melodic.
I don't normally give comments to anyone, sorry youtube creators... But I have to say that you are one of the few that I actually come and watch. I haven't been disappointed this far, we don't agree on everything, but that's what makes it more interesting. Thank you for you contribution to the community and keep up the good work!
12:44 Helloween got their old guitarist and vocalist back, now they have 3 guitarist, 2 lead vocalists (3 if you count with Kai), a bassist and a drummer
Well, maybe Doug should react to Pumpkins United or Skyfall next (if he hasn't already, idk).
Iron Maiden fans are the best! Congratulations on the milestone!
Past Doug: Talking about music theory, what the song remind him of
Present Doug: "Shut up and enjoy the music!" *Air plays drums, guitar and headbangs
Whenever I find iron maiden title I watch the video without thinking.. up irons big fan since 1988. Tripoli, Libya
'Cause you know this has happened before
And you know that this moment in time is for real
And you know when you feel Deja vu
If you love the dual guitars in Iron Maiden you might want to check out the band who inspired them: Wishbone Ash. I don't think you've done them before and their songs Sometime World and The King Will Come rock.
Great idea. Steve Harris was a fan, so this would give context to why Maiden sounds the way they do.
The video that I found Doug with. Iron Maiden Strange World still to do, and of course, Testament someday. Just think, when I started listening to Iron Maiden, Doug was 5 years old.😂. Congratulations on 2 years on UA-cam. Most successful UA-cam channels last 7 years, so you got at least 5 years left.
So glad you chose to rerun what is my favorite Iron Maiden performance - thank you, for this and for just being you. Keep 'em coming.
Great band to live. Saw them in the early 80s. Then last year 2022 in Austin with my Son. Still sound great.
Your reaction to Iron Maiden's Rime of the Ancient Mariner was the first one I saw. No idea why it popped up in my suggestions because I generally dislike and avoid reaction videos. Can't believe that was almost 2 years ago. I've been watching ever since and have found a lot of music that I really like through your channel. I've also learned a lot of music theory that I've never really thought about before as well, and I've been playing one instrument or another for 46 years now. Thanks for the channel and congrats on 2 years :)
I was watching your channel on my lunch breaks at work. Iron maiden was the first thing I saw. After 8 years, our office was closed, and my position was outsourced to New Jersey. Needless to say, it's been tough getting back to work. I still follow your channel. I got married last year. My wife has been a rock. She is Brazilian. I used to send her Iron Maiden songs when she was in Sao Paulo. Up the Irons. Keep up the excellent work
This first Iron Maiden reaction video was my gateway drug to all things Doug....I think you had about 3,000 subscribers at the time? Glad to see the channel has grown so much, well deserved.
You are, along with Key of Geebz and The Charismatic Voice, hands down the best Music reaction channel on UA-cam precisely for the reason your brother told you: You add to what we know about these songs. It would be awesome if you could do longer, more in-depth analysis-videos about some of these songs, that are not in the typical "reaction" format, because there is so much interesting stuff to learn about the theory behind the songs we love.
LOL I was one of those who joined this channel because of that reaction.
You're one of us now! Glad to have you as a part of the Blood Brotherhood, Dough 🤘
Thank you so much Doug!
Yes Maiden is the only band with three lead guitars that I know of that’s what makes them unique and that distinctive sound galloping guitars
I love Iron Maiden, and I'm a Proggie. This is brilliant, cheers Doug.
We knew the "Metal" would get ya Doug. Now you're in for life. You can't go back now! Up the Irons my man!
Oh well, wherever,
Wherever you are
Iron Maiden's gonna get you
No matter how far
2x Doug head banging like an 80s rage child! Priceless! :)
Do you know that the video you reacted is with the intro of the song cutted, right?
Congratulations for the two years, my favourite reaction channel!
I have an sound engineering / mixing seminar given by Ken "Pooch" Van Druten who is the live sound engineer for this band and he goes into depth on having 3 lead guitars and the panning and EQ techniques he uses to give each guitarist their own space in the mix. It's quite fascinating.
Noticed the walls of the office have gotten much more material on them. Long gone the days of the simple light shade.
Always happy for more maiden
Immagine in 8 or 10 years, if Doug keeps up this trend/tradition, how many screens within screens we will see :))) will be epic!
I remember watching this video I had the pleasure of seeing iron maiden live.
You help bring the stories behind this song and so many songs to life and I appreciate your content. Keep up the good work my friend. God bless.
And the rest is history.... Thanks, Doug. Congrats, and many more years to come! I will never forget your Maiden Mondays.
Congrats from Portugal, really love your reactions to music!! Cheers (Irish whiskey, the best!)
Knowledge really has to be transmitted and this transmission has its personal mark with the ease and clairvoyance with which you speak and the ease with which you do it so makes the spectator happy, who thus learns small details that may have gone unnoticed previously.
People love to know what others think about the subjects they are so grateful for.
The technical research that you do behind the songs and the musicians as well as their history makes the ears of any listener prick, placing the listener in a time and space with reference... as if it were a music GPS satellite.
That whiskey sounds like a good ointment to me.
:)
For me Fear of the dark is just the harbinger of Joy of a Spark.
Remember "the dress" that went viral? How some people thought it was white but it was actually blue?
The curtains in the old video look white while they look blue in the new video.
Anyone else feel they were reminded of the Number Of The Beast album art in the vid, with 3 differing sizes of people.
Doug towering over Doug to his left, towering over Maiden to his left.
Congrats! I came in via your YES reactions and have stuck around to experience things like Iron Maiden. In the early 80's I was the designated driver for friends who were going to The Spectrum to see Iron Maiden. We had floor seats, they were toasted, and I was bored. So bored, I left the floor area and started a climb to the highest seats where I stretched out and actually napped during the show. I remember seeing "Eddie," which was neat, but that's the complete and total end of my memory of that show.
As an audience, reaction videos give us also something else: the joy of sharing some piece of music we love with someone that will appreciate it.
Double the Doug, double the fun.
Thanks, Doug.
You need to go see them on the next North American tour. They don't have many tours left. Up the Irons!
Fear of the Doug!!
"I'll try not to talk too much over it"
Ah, those were the days, Doug.
Looking forward to two years from now when you do your reaction to a reaction to a reaction video.
Happy second anniversary, Dr. Doug!! 🎉🥂 Rock On! 🤘🤘
Iron Maiden took you from 300 subscribers To 270,000 subscribers with the hundreds of thousands of views and over a million views they have produced. I would bet that 70% of of your subscribers have come from viewers draw in from the Maiden videos! That is why they are the holders of the peak of the METAL MOUNTAIN! You should do a tribute compilation video to pay your respects to the power they have had over this genre of music for the last 5 decades, and still sell out shows around the world to this day!
Frankly I'd argue Tool is what launched him, I know that's what made me find him back when he had like 2k subs
For me, it was Dream Theater that made me find him. No one else appreciates their complexity and explains them the way he does.
More metal on the channel, less prog. Only check in to the channel now from time to time.😩
Nightwish 🤘🤘🤘
I'd argue Iron Maiden was the start, but a lot of other bands and people helped the channel's growth, in a time where first react type of content was hyped on UA-cam.
If this was at the 200 subscriber mark, I must've been at about 3 or 400, I'm proud to say. It's been a lot of fun watching/listening along.
I hope you get a chance to see Iron Maiden live!!!
They (hopefully) will be touring North America later this year or next year.
I know I will be seeing them for the 3rd time.
BTW, Bruce is a pretty small person. He is only 5'6 and ~140lbs. His pants will be small AF.
I watched the original video the day you released it. I’m a huge Maiden fan and I’ve watched every reaction you do to iron maiden and a lot of the other ones you do. I’ve even told my buddy who has a masters degree in composition to watch you…and he does. For me it’s really fun as a non-musician non-composer to hear what you have to say about things because I have learned a lot and it does take me back to a time when I was younger played trumpet. Anyway I’ve seen maiden 8 times in concert most recently here in Seattle and I can’t wait to see them again. I can tell that you’ve warmed up to the potential of seeing them live. If you do, I recommend standing on the floor. Can’t match being that close and taking in the entire stage production.
Every anniversary he reacts to the previous years reaction of this video and it will be Doug-ception
Congrats for the two years, Doug! May many more come!
Your amaizing Doug!!!!
You know, I know that Doug mainly does rock and metal but I would love for him to start reaction to Jean-Michel Jarre. Especially the early stuff like Oxygène and Équinox. He could divide the albums up into A and B sides. Just an idea, and I would love it if he did that.
Also, content creators reacting to their early stuff is a real riot. But it also shows how much growth they go through so in that way it's amazing. :)
Finally, cheers, Doug, and here's to 2+ more years. 🍻
I like to watcth your videos because it is very cool but also because you speak very clearly and I can train my english
You know, Doug, I’ve always felt deep respect for people who are able to laugh about themselves. I really enjoyed this. Greetings from Mexico, and happy anniversary!
Thanks for drawing attention to your doc. I've been a subscriber since sometime in 2021 and didn't know until today that kept track. I'm amazed to find that you've not reacted to any Triumph songs. They are the "other" Canadian trio and arguably as popular in their day, if not as longevic. Would love to see your take on "Fight the good fight" and/or "Lay it on the line."
Up the Irons! Congrats on two years!
Really fun seeing the way your react to the song with your head and movements, often in the exact same way
Nice throwback in history
Still waiting for a reaction on Jon Lord’s Concerto for Group and Orchestra. 1969, Royal Alberthall London. Performance by Deep Purple.
One of the first cooperative concerts by Philharmonic Orchestra and Rock band.
Really interesting for an classical composer
My favorite reaction is "Close to the Edge". Same reaction as the first time I heard it, when I was 16.
...Like IT so much seeing you having fun yet with Iron Maiden!!!!🤟
April Wine, a Canadian Band, has 3 Guitarists as well.
Been on board ever since Doug love your video reactions especially Iron Maiden ❤God works in mysterious ways ❤️
This was great! Loved hearing the backstory and thanks for the whiskey tip! Proper glass and careful sip, I can tell you are a connoisseur. I am more into Scottish and Rye but I will check it out.
I haven't seen before the Fear of the Dark reaction. Doug you are cool. But now that I found out that you like BTTF and mentioned "the first time experience of Back to the Future" and that you have seen it a dozen times...you just got cooler.
Rock'n'roll !!!
Watching both Dougs simultaneously headband together warmed my heart. Congrats on 2 years I've said before but as a classically trained sax player and a metal head/music lover your channel is such an uplifting and entertaining one compared to many out there. Cheers 🍻
I love your channel, Doug; a real mix of reaction, insight and humour.
2 years and 269K subscritors later... Love your videos. keep the great work! i'm glad, that you now, would pay to see the Iron Maiden!
Helloween have three lead guitars now. Historically only two but since the Pumpkins United tour when Kai Hansen (guitar/vocals) and Micheal Kiske came back into the fold. Now you have Michael Wiekath, Kai Hansen and Sasha Gerstner all on guitars, all play lead too. On this note it would be great to have a reaction to some of Kai Hansen and Ralf Scheepers performing Heal Me by their band Gamma Ray. It’s a fantastic tune and for me quite an interesting composition.
Your reaction of Fear of the Dark is what drew me in to your channel.
Congrats, Doug! 200 followers to 270K in 2 years is incredible! Love your analysis. I really appreciate your ability to break things down for us without proper musical training. May I suggest "The Warning." 3 sisters from Mexico that are currently only 22 20 and 18. I'd like to see your breakdown of their song Disciple or Evolve.
Still think you should do Iron Maiden - Live at the Rainbow! It's on the Iron Maiden Early Days DVD, if you can get a copy.
Like watching a replay of a baptism.
Doug reacting to Doug is something that should've happened on a weird Wednesday.
I love how new Doug is so more into this 😂
I reviewed Craft Beer for 12 years with the Erie Better Beer Bureau, Over 500 UA-cam Videos, I recently Went back and watched our early videos.....Just Wow. So This was Fun, Because this is the video that made me subscribe to your channel. Keep on Rocking.
Lol, so good. I loved how you agreed with yourself, positive self talk is important... 😆
Top man Doug awesome channel
Congratulations on the 2year anniversary!! Hopefully many more to come, also redbreast is a fantastic choice! 🇮🇪
The first band I remember with three lead guitars I think, ironically, was Adrian Smith And Project.
Congrats Doug. I’ve been followed your videos for long and more than informative, instructive they are fun and relaxing in some dull moments. Thanks for the work.
Hello Mr. Helvering - or should i say hello Doug, it´s me toto from germany - i´ve been with u since nearby your starting and been not needed to comment about my broken english. But anyway - i´ll be glad u mad u´r way troughout this corona-xperience and i think we both can thank the creator to find another way to be "stay in tune" with things we love. I love the way u bring music to people in a different way - from a classic composer - this is awsome 4 me. i learn a lot from a different angle. me the creator bless u and u´r family and please don´t stop giving us more of those content. By the way - the most i like when u sitting at the piano and play along - could listen all the time. best regards 2 u and u´r family toto
Happy birthday Doug. Loved your progression to being a Metal Head ! 🤣🤣
Gotta love Doug... even when you're Doug
Up The Irons! Been enjoying the channel since that first video! Congrats on all your success, your unique takes are the best out there!
A band you should check is Los Jaivas, from Chile.
They were and are South america's answer to Pink Floyd, with concept albums, mixing folk music with rock, blues and jazz. Aside from their history (going into exile escaping the dictatorship, which could be avideo of its own), its Chile's best known band and one of southamericas greatest alongside Soda Stereo. Altura de Machu Pichu its their most well known album, which, as the name says, was inspired by Machu Picchu and they actually recorded a concert there.
It could be very interesting and cool to see you analize their music, since it adapts classical folk music from here and neighbouring countries, creating something really unique.
12:45 Periphery has 3 guitarists! I’m surprised you haven’t reacted to them yet they’re an extremely pivotal band for modern prog metal. I’d recommend “Racecar” from their debut.
Happy anniversary Doug! And Meghan and Dan too! Love your show! ❤️❤️❤️
Sweet, this is one of their best performances of this song and I guarantee I WAS listening to Maiden when I was a Sophomore in HS in '92... except I say I'm in my late 40's, feel more like I'm 70. I got here from your Ren reaction and had to see what you thought of the "best metal band ever". For a Classical composer I would have suggested "Rime of The Ancient Mariner" live. Oof, well I suppose I'll "rewind" since I was typing before watching. Oh yea, that sound in the beginning, it's practically an entire country "singing them in".
I'm glad you came around to saying you WOULD see them live, I unfortunately never have but I did get to see some great shows including Pink Floyd which was one band that just had to be seen!
Loved watching your Maiden reviews. Congrats on the success. I’d recommend listening to The Clansman (Scottish heritage 👍) from the Rock in Rio concert, amazing recording and imo their best live recording. Fascinated to hear your thoughts….🙏
Was watching the dance of death review and I think you mentioned you wanted something a bit more out there harmonically. I was listening to flash of the blade from Powerslave and thought it’s almost over the top harmonies and sub harmonies might be cool to react to
Looking forward to the reacting to the reacting of your first Maiden reaction!
Congrats! I remember watching this first video 2 years ago!
It's cool to see how much you learned, I mean about making videos.
been here since that first reaction and did comment with suggestions you actually took. :)
