  • I have been designing this live edge walnut desk for months and I finally decided I had to stop planning and start doing. I was inspired by DiResta's Massive Dovetail bench and of course as with anything #liveedge, the work of #GeorgeNakashima. I knew I wanted GIANT #dovetails and an industrial modern spin with a steel leg. This slab is absolutely beautiful, so the biggest design challenge was just staying out of the way.

    Dude! Hahahaha I was watching thinking what a cool desk! Then all of a sudden my jig appears! So proud of you bud. That build is out of this world. Great work!

      Dude, perfect application here. When you are cutting 2” dovetails in an 8/4 slab, you’ve got no room for error. Feel free though share the vid.

      I wholeheartedly agree. I was trying to use a different species, but kept coming back to American black walnut. She’s my favorite.

    I'm 2 years behind on your vid. Awesome work(just recently saw your pc build with this desk)! I get a majority of my tools from Harbor Freight too.
    And yes you should show vids of sanding. Show off your process of progress.

    RE: Your sanding ... while not totally interested in WATCHING (at regular speed for the entire piece, that is), it is nice to know which grits you went through and why. Or if you had any unorthodox method you had to employ because of weird angles or something. Love the channel!

    You know you could use a piece of angle iron over the edge and some bar clamps to pull your joints together instead of pounding on them back and forth back and forth with them not lined up correctly. That just makes it harder on you. Next time try cinching it up wood angle iron and bar clamps

    I like sanding a lot, I always wonder why people hate it so much. Have to say I got excited when I saw the recip saw and angle grinder being used. I think they are very underrated tools when it comes to woodworking. But why do you hate jigsaws? It's one of my favourites.

    • @WoodWorkLIFE
      @WoodWorkLIFE  6 років тому

      I hate them because the blades always overheat in hardwoods. They don’t have a deep enough capacity to be useful, they leave a raggedy edge, they behave unpredictably in a kerf re: feedrate, vibration...You can’t adjust the depth of the cut so you can’t cut on top of a workbench so work holding is a pain...I could go on and in.

    The unconventional tools you used were fun to watch. But...but...you had a live edge slab and didn't use any tinted epoxy fill...disorienting...

    Nice job. Even with the huge dovetails, was racking a concern?

    • @WoodWorkLIFE
      @WoodWorkLIFE  4 роки тому

      Not really, there is SO much surface area on those dovetails and the slab is 2+ inches thick. It is essentially the same as a splined waterfall table. It is just that much more important to cut the dovetails squarely.

  • @alanharris8282

    For doing finishing work you can get a 10in Ryobi orbital buffer and use headliner spray-on adhesive in other words contact cement spray in a can applied to the terry cloth buffer pads that are available. Attached a 10in square piece of brown cardboard corrugated box. Then spray adhesive on to the cardboard box and the back of a sheet of sandpaper. Sand sand sand away and one that's all done you can also buff with plane brown paper bag glued right to the old sandpaper or pull the old sandpaper off and glue the paper bag to the terry cloth however you want to do it but it makes a very smooth finish on Walnut

    I like the combination of the steel and the slab, and that sculpting of where the two pieces meet gave it a really nice distinctive look. I really need to pick up one of those RZ masks, they look really comfortable.

    Beautiful slab. When you use PVA glue (water based) on a tight fitting joint it begins to swell the wood as soon as you put it on, making the fit even tighter. Polyurethane and hide glues won't do that and actually lubricate the assembly.

    • @WoodWorkLIFE
      @WoodWorkLIFE  6 років тому +1

      Thanks for the tip. So hide glue or epoxy would’ve been better.
