How to Make a Desk with Hidden Wireless Charging

- I build a desk with hidden wireless charging. I used woodworking and metalworking on this project with a walnut top and a tube steel welded base. This modern industrial computer desk has a nice simple desk feel but with tons of character including a copper metal bowtie inlay. #wirelesscharging

Wise advice my dad gave me about welding (time served welder) - You don't have to be a good welder - you only have to be great at grinding.
You could say the same thing about life; You have to be good at grinding.
@@JNYC-gb1pp thats it, enough internet for today
@@cocoshort6528 I mean grinding as in persistent and consistent - not the sexual meaning! lol
@@JNYC-gb1pp lol
A grinder and paint, will make a welder what he ain't !

I am a former high school shop teacher.....and the reason I subscribed, was your honesty to tell and show your mistakes. You make mistakes and you learn from them. There may be times that you need to take a deep breath and calm down. But we have all been there. And the fact you welded your clamp.....don't think the best of us haven't done that!! Be careful grinding down your welds, if the weld has not penetrated deep enough, grinding might just make the weld disappear or be severely weakened.....I think most channels hide the mistakes, and you don't, even with some pro's....your mistakes reminds them that they too always have to think about the next step with safety ALWAYS coming in FIRST.... continue on Son...your doing GREAT!!!
Step 1: Build the table
Step 2: Realize that your device doesn’t support wireless charging
Step 3: Commit happyn’t
Ophi2 you talk about building a table like its one step! Its more like:
Step 143: Finish building a table
Step 1: Have an iPhone XR, which does support wireless charging
Step 2: Lack the skill and energy and materials to make this table
Step 3: Watch video anyways to see how legit the idea is and wonder if Logitech is going to release wireless charging desks in the future
Anonymous User true
Amaracea omg you just explained my life story.... I have an XR which I’m watching on and supports wireless charging. I lack the skill and the materials to build this. I watch the video to find out if it’s legit AND I AM WONDERING IF THERE WILL BE ANY WIRELESS CHARGING DESKS IN THE FUTURE WTFFFFFFF
@@timmy409 IKEA has it in their showrooms. I guess it's coming soon
Excellent video! You explain everything so clearly. Also not hiding the mistakes. Well done Brad!
Thanks, Timmy!
That's also the part i appreciated the most, it's such a rarity to hear someone say [& with confidence!] "do you see me making any mistakes? what am i doing wrong & what could i be doing better" It really demonstrates true intellect cuz it shows someone as not just able to admit fault, but mainly that there willing to learn from their shortcomings, further elevating one's awareness in the subject at hand, rather than one letting their ego control them an taking advice on comments up the butthole.
I applaud you for this and hope others will learn from YOU in this regard
I agree, I'm also impressed you showed your mistakes, as I know I learned from them instead of doing them myself!
The walnut and metal combo looks amazing and is an awesome build. Adding an inlay and hidden wireless charging? SO cool!!
Southern Style DIY taking it to the next level!
This is the most beautiful desk I have ever seen in my life. I am going to build my own desk at some point and I am definitely going to apply this to the design. Thank you for the inspiration man.
I'm always skeptical when people put metal frames with woodwork, but it really brought this whole piece together. The metal frame and copper inlay bring a nice modern look to the wood!
that copper inlay looks awesome! You might use it as a singature sort of thing on furniture you might want to sell...
That desk looks amazing!! And I loved how simple and clear your explanation was. Great job!
This is awesome. I love the bowtie emblem in the surface. Hopefully your charger pad doesn't overheat and is able to last a while within your table! I probably would have cut about 1" of extra hole radius so it at least gets airflow around the sides of it. But if it works, it works.

Me: already has a new desk

This is freaking amazing! I'm currently building my desktop and you just inspired me! Never would have thought of a hidden charger. Wow. Nice work.

I need this, my phone basically lives on my table

I don't think you understand convenience, The reason wireless charging is so popular for phones is because it's convenient to just set your phone somewhere and it'll start charging without needing to be plugged in, Even if plugging it in is quicker and more efficient, Most people will usually pick the more convenient route.
I see u everywhere.

Great project. Final product is amazing. Thanks for sharing.
Beautiful desk. Maybe one idea; maybe use velcro to mount the charger and/or something that is not so permanent for routing the cable. Just in case the charger goes bad you can always replace it. Amazing job.
Velcro would've worked perfectly, that's my only gripe too. Nice work though.
literally about to comment the same thing!
With the thickness of the wood, plus the case, plus the Velcro, the charger may be too far away from the phone at that point. A detachable cover plate with a foam pressure pad (to press the charger against the wood) might be a better option.
Hot glue is not all that permanent. It can scraped out easily with minimal damage to the wood. Plus its hidden so even if you do damage it slightly you'll never see it.
Awesome build Brad! I really like the wireless charging idea and how you used the bow tie as a reference feature. Well done. Keep it up!
Thanks, Casey!
Great video! Really shows that dedication, patience and hard work can produce beautiful results!
This is awesome!!!! I am looking to build a desk for a friend as a gift, and this was the perfect video to watch. I love the wireless charging- brilliant!

Brilliantly done. Loved the craftsmanship and wireless charging is super hit.
Awesome! This shows how a relatively easy project becomes great if you use fine materials.
I love the build Brad, really well done! Beautiful wood, great techniques, cool features - really a fun project. Also couldn't help but notice the camera angles and shots. They told the story well, and really highlighted what you were doing.
Thank you! Always trying to spice up the camera work a little here and there.

Absolutely stunning man good job, especially the welding, takes guts to try new stuff like that! I cant find a desk to fit in my apartment so i hope to do the same, you've given me a lot to think about, subscribed! :)
that charging area look absolutely amazing!
Hi there, as an architect i like the work you have done, good craftsmanship.
And I would like to give a couple of tips for those going to this kind of project.
-If you dont want to see the top metal frame you can use a larger top with nich that leg top frame sits into...
-Instead of hot gluing the charger and its cable use brackets to hold them in place (in case the charger fails or technology changes)
-Consider electrical outlets beneath the wooden top if you are going to use it as a computer desk, basically mount extension cable (long enough to reach the wall outlet) with multiple outlets (preferably with a on-off switch) will help what ever electronics you need to plug in...
-And ask people like "Fix this build that" channel for help in the beginning they will direct you on the right equipment and material...
so much precision in this vid 😍😍
Absolutely love how he showed his own mistakes and told how to rectify them
The best people learn from their mistakes and are not scared to be honest
Nice job 👍 Love the clean lines and simplicity of it.
for your second welding project all i can say is well done mate very good and keep it up
We've just found our channel today and we loved it! For sure it's gonna be a good source of information for us when we start building the interior of our shipping container house! ☺️

Usually this is totally not my ballpark, but this looks incredible. Forwarded it to my brother in law cuz he goes bananas for this stuff .
You sir got yourself a well deserved sub!
I loved the clean design of this
I absolutely need to build a desk similar to this. Love that hour glass inlay, perfect finishing piece to that gorgeous walnut
It's a bowtie
I'VE BEEN A CERTIFIED WELDER & FABRICATOR FOR SOME TIME NOW.
HERE'S IS SOME VERY HELPFUL
***WELDER INSIGHT***
***45° miter each corner***
Its a cleaner look and reducing the chance of someone INCLUDING **Children** of sticking their finger into the metal tubing and cutting their fingers.
Mitering makes it waterproof from the inside.
Plus, if you want a wireless desk... you can fish the wires through a mitered cut easier than a "T" jointed weld. And fasten a rubber "O" ring grommet around any exit hole for wiring... make it water tight (less chance of rusting on the inside) AND it'll also protect the power cords from rubbing on the steel tubing over time.
Me: builds table with wireless charger.
Realises my phone doesn't have wireless charging
ZOGBOG i hate it when some good comments does not have replies

Absolutely gorgeous! Great job!
best diy that I'd ever seen 😍
IKEA taking notes!
Hahahaha!!
Yall want to know what the only thing i like about ikea is?! Its how they perfectly wrap a rug up and put in wrapping and you get it home and your just waiting for that wrinkly ass carpet to come unfold partially and takes about 2 years to get flat!! But nooo it unflolds into a perfectly flat rug!!
Love the copper bow tie! It’s gorgeous
It's beautiful, well-done sir!
Great video love that desk
small tip if you first only tag the inner edges you can still correct the angles than tag the outsides to so you dont really have to clamp it down as hard or if something is to big it will come in hamdy some day.. you can also use a piece of copper and clamp it in with the part you are welding because it wont stick on copper ;)
Awesome tips! Thanks
I really liked your work & workflow... Totally professional. & WOW ...what a work shop- A cabinet makers dream .
I admire the skill and the creativity ...cheers

Great build! 😉
The desk looks great!

*Imagine if the charger didn't work after all that*
and what if it broke, how do you replace this?
That is why he tested to see if it will charge befor he glued it
The copper is not over the charger. he is lucky he did not place it directly on top of the charger as it would not work with copper on top.
@@Bobodeman he meant what will he do if the charger will stop working and he could not get it off the table XD
I think you would just rip out the old charger from the wire. Hot glue is a little easier to work with than many other glues. You would just have to cut it out with a razor blade kind of like cutting out silicone.
Great looking table. Since I don't have all the fancy tools I'm buying the butcher block countertop and staining it and sealing it with poly. Bought some metal legs from Amazon and rented a wood router from Home Depot to cut the table for the charger. Bought a few bowtie inlays from Etsy. I'll post a video of the table once its done. Hopefully regular Joe's right the rest of us can do it with limited tools.
Awesome Love the Charging station you added :)
Woah, for the welding, never weld directly on concrete, it could explode from the heat especially if you are doing more than a couple tacs
That would look sick
“just welding here, no big deal”
Concrete floor- 😏 “Alalalallalalah!”
It won't explode you need much more heat for tbat
@@DILLY_DING I think he meant crack instead of explode
@@DILLY_DING yes it can. dust explosion can occur
Lol, that clamp that was welded! That's something that would happen to me too!
Great video! I've been looking into building something similar to this. Thanks for sharing.
