Great work, Ed, looking forward to part 3! Tip for you - instead of oiling the piston rings just put a very light coating of wd40 on the bores - it helps them bed in properly and quickly when you fire it up! 👍🏻
An alternator is a self-contained, external unit that produces DC with electro-magnets. A stator is a stationary part of a rotary generating system and they typically use permanent magnets. Stators are also contained inside whatever is generating the power, like your sportster in this example.
Must say, @ed_the_brit, great content. I don't know where you broadcast from, but I did notice your use of Fahrenheit instead of Celsius (as my colleagues east of the pond do), and so if nothing else wanted to give you props for aligning your temperature units with your motorcycle ;) Re alternator vs stator, the above is accurate. An alternator contains a stator ("stat"ionary part of the windings). Cars can package all the electrical components to get DC into that one housing. Motorcycles typically didn't have the space and spread the stator, rectifier, and voltage regulator around where they could. Confusingly, in the auto-world, the voltage regulator can appear either within or outside of an alternator (so whether or not a V/R is in the alt it's still an alt). For added fun, cars didn't use to have alternators, they had generators. The generator used a commutator that made mechanical contact with brushes to generate DC from AC whereas the advent of the alternator introduced the solid state "rectifier" diodes for much more reliability. I had to refresh my memory on all this based on your question, so thanks for that and keep up the excellent content. Really well done.
@@Ed_the_BritWell, I mean I can't speak for anyone else, but I as a semi new rider, especially one just barely starting to work on my own bike, I have had a hard time finding detailed videos for things like how to properly remove a rear and front tire? Because when I do see videos like those, I always have tons of more questions that they never answer. How do I know how much tension to leave on the belt? What tool do I need to know that? Do I have to bleed the brakes before taking the off? Videos like these exist of basic maintenance things, but nobody does them that well in my opinion. I often still feel left with questions and still hesitant to do them to my bike because I don't feel confident that I know everything I need to yet haha. Especially when I will be riding it, you know. Not something I want to really screw up on. Anyway, that's my two sense! Cheers dude!
Thanks man I'm working on it! Paint takes some time tho. I think with the next builds I'm going to break them down into more detailed portions along with a final full build.
Man not gonna lie, the first part i was thinking, why he not clean the engine? So much change and still the old engine, i have swallowed my tongue! What a nice piece of work!
Nice one! Looking good. Can't beat an EVO (even tho im an ironhead owner lol) Liking the snappy editing - concise and to the point, no endless filming of tedious obscure minutiae that some other channels use to pad content out.👍
Fantastic work Ed! You've come a long way. You should be very proud of what you've done! The videos are fantastic Total respect ,hope you still find time to cast a line 👍 Steve C
Hey Steve how's it going? It's been a very long time! Thanks for the support I appreciate it, means al lot. I would love to catch up! Here's my email edthebritmotorcycles@gmail.com and yes I still get to go fishing. I started up again last year actually.
@Ed_the_Brit Hi Ed, great to hear from you, looks like your killing it over there! Glad you still get time to fish. I'm going in for a hip replacement tomorrow but will email you later in the week Cheers Steve 👍
Been waiting for your video on this part wow the motor came out dang sweet nice job got a 1200 hardtail myself someone made so your videos help me see what I could do thanks Maine.
SUBSCRIBED // Love these videos, straight to the point and not so much talking, keep up the great work, love it. Very satisfying to watch these amazing machines come alive.
Ive been considering chopping my 1200 xlh for a long time. Im a good fabricator and ive already done alot of the mods ypu have done on this bike. The only thing that is putting me off is the wiring harness. This looks so simple! I cant wait to see you wire it in!
Thanks man! And yeah it can be simple. I'll be sure to go over it in the next video and if you have any questions feel free to ask. I'm always willing to help
@Ed_the_Brit thanks Ed that's great. I've already simplified alot of the wiring up front and ran the wires through my handle bars to small bar mounted button switches. Really looking forward to the next installment so I can get my head around simplifying th rest of the harness
You know your way around on that motor , I have one Queston, why do you get the head torqed down and then loosin it up and do it again , is that to ensure a good fit between the cylinder , head and block ? If I had the money I would just hire you to build me a bike your awesome..
I was told once that it's called a stator because the voltage regulator was separate. Alternators have built in regulators, not sure if that is true though.
Hey, man, i just hit the subs button. You don't add much naration, which not necessary for me, because we pretty much understand what are those sequences in this video all about, just actions, and thats why i subscribe to your channel. There are so many videos that contain too much explanations, compared on action scenes in them. Great video, simple editing, can't wait for the next episodes. And yes, it's going to be a great bike i believe
Hey man, great content and nice editing. Wish I could drop uni and my job and work as a motorcycle mechanic for a number of years only to learn the trade. I have a 2010 Honda VT 750S that I am trying to modify and make into a bobber and every small mod feels like a massive, undoable task. Wish you the best and if you ever make an online course, I'll definately join.
Hey thanks man I appreciate the support! It may feel like a big task now but the more you do it the easier it'll get and you'll appreciate it so much more when it's done. Just keep at it dont give up. If you get any problems reach out and I'll try to help you out.
Good video and well filmed so you can easily see what you are building on the engine. Always cool to see that there are more people with the same interest as yourself. I have never seen that model torque wrench before, what is it called? Kind regards from Denmark...
Thanks man I appreciate the support! It is called a digital torque converter (not to be mistaken for an automatic transmission torque converter). Mine is made by Quinn but there are several different makes.
Nice build! Weirdly, almost identical to mine. We must have the same taste lol. Mine has a suicide shifter with a foot clutch and it is a blast ride. 🤘🏼👌🏻
@@Ed_the_Brit well, unfortunately a little over a year ago, I broke my neck racing motocross. 🤕 so it might be a year or two before I can ride a motorcycle again (doing my best to make the best recovery I can.) I live in Cleveland Ohio in the states.

i hope you keep making this kind of content, can watch this all day
Thanks, definitely going to continue. Working on the paint now.
