      Hey Thanks. If you think about it theres really not a big difference. They're all twin cylinders and have to do the same thing. Other then the extra carb and the timing linkage moved to the side they are the same. But I know what you're talking about, I'll always work on the small ones! Thanks again & Stay tuned !

    With the way ethanol fuel eats hoses and rubber seals, it pays to go through the fuel system of older outboards and practically replace all the rubber parts. Most all of them weren’t made to handle the ethanol in today’s fuel. I found this out the hard way with my own old outboards!

    I purchased a 2018 15.5 trapper topper jon boat with a 1989 evinrude 25hp with stick steer The prior owner a service manager at a local car dealership
    said it needs carburetor work. I got it home and found several things wrong with it bt not the carburetor. I replaced the water pump, thermostat, exhaust side cover gasket water pump. Found the electric pump lever was in the wrong direction. It would fire up and run. But would stall out and flood the ngk plugs and be a pain to restart. I then after a fishing trip where it almost left us stranded by not wanting to restart. I put new champion plugs in it and took it out for a test run and fishing trip. Still had a little miss in it. I pulled the plugs and found one clean an one with carbon. Put a ohm meter on it and found both sparkplug wires were open. I replaced the wires with a new set. Ran much better. But the idle advanced from the carburetor wouldn't line up this problem is the total advance is not adjusted properly. Next is finding my timing light.

    If you remember, last week on another video I posted in was having an issue getting my 1985 25HP Johnson to start. I had replaced everything electrical, fuel system as a whole...I was getting pissed! It turned out to be....the damn Needle Valve!!! The issue was that IF my carb had ever been rebuilt, they never replaced the retainer! It was super loose and could not hold the needle valve in place. When the motor was started...even the vibration from driving the boat down the road...was making the needle valve back itself way out. So, it was basically trying to run on pure air with no fuel! Lol

    I’ve got a 2005 Johnson 25 and there’s rotational play in the ignition plate. Because of that the “return to idle spring” doesn’t work. Not sure if it’s supposed to have play? Haven’t pulled the flywheel off yet as I need to get the right socket.
    My other 2000 25 doesn’t have any play and it seems right so not sure what’s the go. Any ideas?

    Do you have any advice on how to remove a stuck lower unit? I have a similar Evinrude and after removing all 4 bolts, 1 nut, and disconnecting the linkage, the lower unit barely moves? I've tried PB blaster and hanging it upside down and even a come-along - it is on there! Any suggestions? Thanks for all of your videos.

      Hey Travis. Thanks for tuning in. Everything you just mentioned would have been my suggestions. One guy said he left it hanging from a tree for a week, spraying it and beating on it everyday until it fell off. Kodibass has a formula for loosening corroded bolts, I think it contains transmission fluid with something else mixed in. Try asking him, his formula works on bolts! It's worth a try. Thanks again !

Anyway the outside looks hardly used and he said when he takes the cover of I will be amazed because it is as clean as a whistle. He said it runs perfect. I am wondering what it is worth but more importantly can I still get parts? If you don’t mind could you give me some input.

      Hey. Thanks for tuning in. Hard to say without seeing it. Look around on your local craigslist, offerup, & facebook marketplace, ebay, search the web, and see what similar outboards are going for right now. Parts shouldn't be a problem, when you get the year/model you can look it up on marineengine.com for parts availability. Ebay also sells parts new and used, and parts for these outboards are interchangeable. Good Luck!

    Love your work. I’m in Australia, and my Johnson 2005 30hp has trouble starting sometimes, but mostly stalls idling and sometimes loses power at WOT. Drop it back to 3/4 throttle and speed increases. Any idea what’s wrong??

    • @THISOLDOUTBOARD1
      @THISOLDOUTBOARD1  3 роки тому +5

      Hey. Thanks for tuning in! Well hopefully, its either its a fuel issue or an ignition issue. I'm leaning towards a fuel issue. But never assume anything with these things, what seems like one thing may be the other. You'll have to eliminate one system at a time, it may be something simple. I would start at your tank and work back through the entire fuel system all the way to the plugs. Check for, tank vent open, primer bulb holding tight, air leaks in fuel lines, carburetor super clean, fuel pump diaphragm, when it stalls at idle pull the plugs out and see if they're wet or dry. While your going through everything check your compression too! Once everything is good with the full system and if you still have problems, check out your ignition system, get a spark tester or a cheap timing light on ebay, check spark on both plugs when it stalls at low speed and high speed, could be an ignition coil or the charge coil under the flywheel dropping out. Even the powerpack may be going bad. You'll have to narrow it down. Hope this helps. Thanks again !

    • @THISOLDOUTBOARD1
      @THISOLDOUTBOARD1  3 роки тому +2

      Hey. Thanks for tuning in. Yes there is a pt. 2. Stop using starter fluid ! Theres no oil in it and you could be causing damage to your outboard. Using Starter fluid is telling you only one thing. You got Spark but Your not getting any fuel to the plugs. So now you need to find out why. Pretty simple right. CLEAN THE CARBURETOR ! Slow speed idle circuit is probably clogged. Check the float and needle, and very important is the slow speed needle Retainer. If it's missing/broken the carb is just sucking air not fuel. I think I covered all this in this video. Clean the carb and replace any parts it needs, screw the slow speed needle/valve in and gently seat it, then turn it out 1 + 1/2 turns, that should get it started. Then your all set to dial in the carb as seen in pt. 2. Then dial it in again, warmed up, in gear, at idle on the boat. You should be good to go and dont forget to clean the high speed orifice/jet in the carb bowl. Thanks again and Stay tuned !

      Hey Rick. Thanks for tuning in. I never use NGK plugs. The recommended plugs are QL77JC4 - Champion Spark Plugs gapped at .30. Some people hate Champion and some hate NGK. It's just one of those things! Thanks again & Stay tuned !

    Hey, it will be interesting to have you look into that fuel pump. My guess is that as long as the vacuum holes (engine and pump) are lined up and the mating gasket is good, the pump's mounting direction shouldn't make a difference. But please do show me the light ! Happy and safe New Year !

    How did you get started working on outboards? Up here in the mountains of northeastern communist California, it is very hard to get your outboards worked on. Most of these clowns up here grow pot for a living and have no interest in making an honest living.

      Hahaha. I told the story a few videos ago. I think it was the one where I rebuilt the motor stand for the 55 and got the blue barrel. Anyway, I've always done my own work on my vehicles and everything. Then one day I bought a boat and it needed a motor. I actually started with a 70, 65 and 60hp motors. Got them all dirt cheap and got them all up and running but wasn't sure which one I wanted for the boat. I was working in my backyard then and it was a super pain in the azz trying to move the motors around than I found out the boat needed a new floor. Long story short, I sold everything except the trailer, bought the aluminum Dura Craft jon boat and the rest is history with the smaller outboards. I just wanted to go fishin! Hahaha Thanks again for tuning in!

      Great video good close up look at the parts! I got this exact Johnson 25 last year, guy told me its 4-stroke. After hundreds of gallons *straight gas* I'm now looking inside to change the powerhead oil. Where's the oil drain screw and fill point? I've already done the gear case oil change. Don't see where's the sump for the power head?

    now another point, what is this guy doing wrong? he is right now damaging the cylinders, i have seen this this so many times, here is what he is doing wrong. When a two stroke is being pulled the cylinders are crankshaft and rod and piston pin are getting Zero Lubrication everytime he yanks on the pull cord the rings are scoring the cylinders. where you buy and old outboard and take off the cylinder head you will see scoring lines on the walls of cylinders, not due to a lack of oil in the fuel tank when running but when pull starting the unit when out of the water. so what must you do, before turning a two stroke outboard over when working on the engine take the plugs out and spray some two strokr oil into the cylinders replace plugs then your good for ten pulls. cylinder scoring in outboards is caused from dry pulling with no lube getting into thr cylinders and crack bearings

    • @THISOLDOUTBOARD1
      @THISOLDOUTBOARD1  14 днів тому

      Hey. Good Point. But. Pulling that outboard is not hurting a thing. Plus its a 2 stroke running motor, just not running right. They don't "dry up" overnight, there's always a degree of lubricant on them. Next time you tear one down rub your hands all over it and you'll see just how greasy they are! Now I've lost count on how many outboards I've put back in the water, and there are times when I'll spray some lube in the cylinders, for instance, Grandpas old outboard that's been sitting in the shed for 30 years! She just might need a little lube and hopefully the rings are not stuck. What your describing, scoring lines on the cylinder walls takes place during operation, its has to run up some rpm's to do the damage your talking about. Nobody can produce that by hand pulling it. If that were the case half or more of the outboards in the world are doomed! There are many things that can cause cylinders/piston scoring, sure wrong fuel/oil ratio, lack of lubricant, excessive heat running hot, bad/stuck rings just name a few. I'm not saying not to lube up the cylinders. I do it often. I am saying scored cylinders/pistons/rings gonna need more kick to cause damage then just pulling on the pull start. Thanks again for tuning in!

      @@THISOLDOUTBOARD1 thats not case, actually gas mixed with oil regardless gas vaporizes very quickly after which the two stroke oil in the gas then turns to Gum, take apart an old outboards carb look inside the bowl if you see sticky glue inside the bowl then you no the gas in oil vaporized leaving the oil to dry out and become a gum thick gooey type substance. another problem now that i am on the subject is that i see people using wd 40 as a lubricant no good wd 40 is also very corrosive. i have for a long time winterized my engines with 10w30 in the cylinders then pull them over with the plugs out done. i wish you the best with your engine.
