What do Steven Gerrard, Xavi, Kobe Bryant and Dr Dre all have in common? They all said John Barnes was their sporting idol. John Barnes is one of the most underrated players of all time and not remembered by people who grew up after the 1980s. Liverpool were banned in Europe so never played in Europe at his peak and got a bad injury in 1991 that robbed him of his explosive speed and was never same player again, just before the Premier League was created and led to the coverage of football in the UK and the world exploding.
It’s weird isn’t it? I also think, in general, he’s come off a lot chattier and friendlier as a manager then he ever did as a player. Probably had to improve his communications skills to manage.
He's a good manager and seems fairly careful with his words. I was brought up a Rangers fan so have been fairly familiar with him in recent years. The Rangers and Celtic jobs aren't really comparable with the Premier League because it's a totally different scenario but they have their own challenges, especially conduct and dealing with a really rabid fanbase. I think he's learned a lot from the experience of that goldfish bowl and early signs are he'll do well for Villa. Good luck to him. It's about time some ex-England players made it as managers again (over more than a season or two). It used to happen more often in the past.

*LEGENDS* of the game on Steven Gerrard.
*Messi:* _" Personally, I think Gerrard is England’s greatest ever player."_
*Zidane:* _“There was a point when Gerrard was the best midfield player in the world. It is unusual to get complete midfield players who can do everything, but that is what he was.”_
*Kaka:* _"For me, and I have always said this, he will be regarded as one of the greatest midfielders ever. No doubt."_ & _"Of course, Lampard was pretty amazing, Scholes the classic. But I'll have Gerrard."_
*Pirlo:* _“While at Milan Ancelotti came to me and said, ‘I want to sign Steven Gerrard to play next to you in midfield - what do you think?’ Without any hesitation I told him, ‘Do it - go and sign him.’ At this stage he was probably the most complete midfield player in Europe, of course I wanted to partner him."_
*Francesco Totti:* _“Steven Gerrard would be the captain of my World XI dream team. Gerrard is a complete player because he can play in every position and can do everything with a football at any time in a game."_
*Patrick Vieira:* _"I heard what Alex Ferguson said about him being better than me. He’s probably right."_
Gerrard is the argubally the most complete player of the last 30 years. And his peers know it. A true great 👏👏👏👏
"To me he is one of the super best midfielders in the world. He is such an excellent player" - Pele
An absolute Legend, but I'd skin him
All of the Lampard and Scholes fanboys going to be coming for your head soon buddy get ready
“I looked up to him as a kid, he was my idol.” *Diego Maradona*
Slippy G
8:05 the best moment of the interview!
yeah of course
Of course yeah
The serious look on his face when he said “I’ve had mixed experiences [doing karaoke]” 😂😂🤣
My all time favorite player and always will be. Liverpool Legend. YNWA Steven Gerrard
the man is a legend. thank you for delivering 55 and doing everything you did for us. ❤
The real Liverpool legend is the coach that saved Stevies toe
legendary comment
True
Man should be given the freedom of the city..
He already was before that gets his name sung every game
@@thomasgeorge6818 I am a late arriver , I don't think I have heard it, can you send a link? Or sing it for us 😊

When he says wine and an Italian, you know it's blue nun and a dominoes
My idol in football. When you try to rate a player, you simply put SG as the standard and see how much he has from Gerrard's talent. One of the most underrated players ever, although he has that respect! Yet, when you look to those comparisons with all those respectful players from his generation and nowadays, it's a really disrespect for Gerrard. He must win EPL with Liverpool one day. Give him the support he deserves.
The old man story is hilarious 😂 Stevie must’ve been a proper lad in the dressing room 🤣
So refreshing to not see any 'Slippy G' comments here. So disrespected. One of the players who made me fall in love with football. Legend
Such an amazing personality
I'm neither a Brit nor a Liverpool fan, but Stevie G is such a top notch person. Great player great human being.
The banter from Stevie and the Celtic fan👏🤣
Being 2 months younger then Gerarrd, it put a smile on my face when he said Barnes was his idol, remeber every kid that supported Liverpool dribbling and saying it's Barnes,Barnes still Barnes,Barnes etc etc,i will be supporting Villa as long as it aint against Liverpool YNWA
Legend. What he did for Rangers will never be forgotten!
the "meself", gets me loving it each time...YNWA STEVIE...Love from Mauritius.
Never seem him so happy in an interview
8:04 stevie never disappoints with a ‘Eeyeah course’ 🤣🤣🤣
In 20 years time we will be looking back at what an amazing managerial career this guy has had.
@@RedScotland yeah he just brought them back from the brink of collapse and won the Scottish Premier league. No biggy 🙄
Love Gerrard. Rangers season ticket holder and big Liverpool fan. This guy has gave me so much enjoyment as a player then as a manager. Nice to hear some info on him as a person as he’s literally the definition of a model professional and you don’t normally hear too much about him as an individual.
@@RedScotland 54/42 then if your referring to Rangers as a new club
Which would mean 9/1 since new business ran Rangers.
Always say it, if you could build a CM, you'd build Gerrard. Strong in every area, weak in none.
Stevie G always comes across very well in these kind of interviews, all the very best to him at villa, thanks for you’re time at ibrox and thanks for the 55🏆 🔴⚪️🔵 🏴🏆🇬🇧
I've had a such a man-crush on this dude all my life! What a player, what a manager! and all his press-interviews are *chef-kiss*
From a lifelong Liverpool fan good luck at Aston Villa Steven Gerrard
Great interview. Quality player. Top bloke. I think he’s gonna be one of the best managers we’ve ever seen
8:05 "yeeeeaa ofCourse" making a comeback
prove that he's still the same person! top lad!
Love or hate Liverpool this man is still a legend and I don't even mean in terms of his achievements ect .. I mean the guy himself is great
The Really young Stevie G showed he had great personality in around 2000, 2001. Great to see him liken this. Many great players he's my English favourite player, although not the best perhaps
Stevie was and is the greatest player that liverpool have ever had he had every thing on the pitch what a fantastic player
Salah might become the best if he doesn't leave
@@abhaysreekanth even if he left at the end of the season he will still go down as 1of the greatest goalscorers in liverpool's history but even if he stays to end his career at Anfield he can't surpass Stevie g being home bred and winning games when no -one on the pitch could turn it around I could pick out many games but against ac Milan & west ham in the cup final west ham were superb if stevie hadn't played that day it could have been a very bad day at the office as west ham were superb but Stevie puts on a 1 man wonder show and also ac milan the best club side in the world there was 1 thing that a brilliant ac or superb west ham never had was stevie g the greatest liverpool player ever
@@briollo3509 yeah that's true , being born there makes a difference.
@@abhaysreekanth Salah not even close. only ones who think he is are the younger kids who are bandwagon fans now that were winning. Stevie the greatest and always will be. King Kenny second. nobody is breaking into that top two.
@@mattvanemden7573 I have been supporting liverpool only since 2011 , so in a way you are right . But it's not the success of the Jurgen era that made a supporter . Used to watch them when they were terrible as well . Thankfully Jurgen came along
I LOVE THIS MAN WITH A PASSION
*Will always be a LIVERPOOL legend*
Stevie G a living legend, you can't but love this guy whoever you support
He has a better hairline than I've ever had and I'm now 18
