Exactly this! Though the old mantra banded around about vehicles being female, as they cost money - it was tongue in cheek, a bit of fun, like the cheeky birthday cards you see with the naked old folks on. It's not there to offend - but people these days have gotten softer to a lot of things, and seem to want to find hurt and offence in everything; when it simply isn't there.
A lot of people need to realise that their virtual life in Twitter or Facebook, doesn't translate into reality, and that their echo chambers have no place in society as a whole.
Pronouns are fine, they have been in use since we all started talking - but trying to force them on people, or trying to 'correct' their use, isn't right - we all have the freedom to say what we like

I don't really give a shit on this issue but here on this side of the Atlantic it's an 'it'. I think you'd be hard pressed to find an orifice you can fuck on a motorcycle, but then English men are well-respected for their ingenuity when it comes to such issues.

As a female rider I've had most of my friends tell me I should refer to my bike as a boy, but I've never really wrapped my head around calling a vehicle any kind of gender- feels like I'm missing out a bit, really! 😆 I think there's a world of difference between calling a machine "her" and using it as an excuse to make sexist jokes- and frankly, I think most people can recognise the difference. Never had any trouble with how people refer to their bikes, and your language has always been very respectful 🙌 thanks for the review! I'm one of the first to take delivery in the States. It's a great little bike. I've been riding since the mid 1960s and have watched motorcycles gain a bunch of weight. A modern day Bonneville is more than 100 pounds heavier than its 60s counterpart. I wanted a lightweight machine that could get out of its own way,, and the Speed 400 fills the bill perfectly. After my big and fast (and heavy) Hondas and Yamahas, it's a real breath of fresh air to ride a bike that responds instantly and predictably to your inputs. You really do feel like a better rider on this thing.

And the most popular bikes to restore are. The two you have just said along with the kh400 because they still make seance today . Any advances we have made emission laws have taken away

    • @pielight7449
      @pielight7449 Місяць тому +4

True, although the only consideration then was power and not emissions. The big difference is efficiency. I still have a 1976 RD400 and have recently acquired a Honda CL500 scrambler (47bhp) which is 73cc bigger than RD engine and the Honda literally uses half the fuel (often 80+ mpg). You also couldn't compare longevity of the two engines (speaking just after another RD rebuild!). If today's manufacturers focused only on power output, no doubt they would far exceed that of the 70s bikes. RD is still great fun though (and that sound!), but it would never be my only bike, whereas the Honda could be if I wasn't concerned about more power (I also have a K1600gt).

Oh, this might just be my next bike! I have an R1200S - a great bike that I’ve had for over 12 years, but as I hit my mid 70s, it’s getting a wee bit heavy for me. Something fun, all-day comfort, lighter than my current bike, yet suitable for a tour. Sounds perfect. Might call in to my local Triumph dealer next week.
Edit: I’ve been for a run to Old Warden airfield (the Shuttleworth Collection), and the problem is, I just love the R1200S (not GS - mine is the rare sports bike that BMW only made for just over a year). I was getting over a bout of covid when I found it a real struggle to push out onto the road. Today, I managed ok. Hmmmm… think I’m keeping it a bit longer. But I’ll still try for a test ride on the Triumph 400.

Always worry about having enough power for quick overtakes and getting out of troublesome moments. Bought mine with 900 miles on the clock, by 1200 miles it had smoothed out and the gearbox went super slick - I think the dealer thought it was a bit of a dud hence two grand off the new price and good trade-in offer.

When I started riding (1971) a 400 was considered a substantial motorcycle. These days they're regarded as practical and economical little run-abouts. I both agree and disagree with that assumption. This new 400 is all real world motorcycle. Some people buy 900 pound touring bikes to bar hop and never venture more than a hundred miles from home. Those people don't know what they're missing. If they ever took a demo ride on one of the Triumphs it just might make them re-think their next purchase.

Hey Andy, I’ve had my Speed400 since the end of May, it’s just had it’s running in service this week and a replacement front wheel as I dented it pretty badly after smashing it through one of our lovely potholes (£500 to replace btw),
As you mentioned I’ve bought mine as a 2nd bike to use for shorter runs, a bit of commuting and just generally to have a bit of fun on, I feel it complements my Multistrada V4S perfectly.
Like you I’m struggling to find fault with it, I love riding it and the fact it sits in front of the Ducati in my garage has absolutely no bearing on how much I’ve been using it! Shout out to my dealer (Pure in Wellingborough) who have been excellent too.

As a fairly new rider I have found it so easy to handle and has given me so much confidence( not too much that it’s made me arrogant!). Coupled with of issues that have been sorted 1) immobiliser light now goes off and snatching at low speed control has stopped after first service. Unfortunately had to put E10 in the other day and it definitely did not like it. All sorted now. It’s not my main bike(Scrambler 900) but it’s great on a Sunday around the Peaks. I changed my T100 for this because of a bit of arthritis in my hip being so lite to manoeuvre about, it’s the same seat height so doesn’t feel small, goes round corners faster than the T100 and I love it for country road riding. I fitted a Dart fly screen which I think makes it look even better with a little wind protection. The only thing I would say about being not perfect is the short first gear, I don’t think it’s needed and to have a higher gear up top for cruising, but you get used to it.

Finally a review who refers to this bike as more than just a “beginners bike” or “people returning back to motorcycles”. I am an Enduro guy, never had a road bike and I do want to buy one to enjoy Portugal’s beautiful weather on a weekend blast and I am seriously considering this one. Don’t want a crazy fast motorcycle with 80bhp and overly complicated. That’s the recipe for bad things to happen. This Speed 400 has the right price, styling is on point and I just need to test ride it.

One of the main reasons why I switched from my sweet little Hunter 350 was plain, more power. Comfort is about the same. She (it’s) a bit more buzzy than the Hunter. Sometimes on longer rides, my hand is numb from the vibes. I was considering the Scrambler version but I found it too tall for my liking, nice bike though. After every ride I lube what I can get at, with a chain cleaning brush using gearbox oil, as per Fortnine. I don't have anyone to push the bike for me. On the subject of using the pronoun 'she' (1:12) when referring to an inanimate object-a motorcycle-as somehow being sexist? 'Usernamekate' has named all her bikes, and I think she has always used a male name, if I'm not mistaken. She called her Triumph Street Triple 765RS, "Donald". 'Itchy Boots' (Noraly), also likes to give her bike a name. 'Basanti' was a female heroine, 'Dhanno' was a female horse, and both these names were inspired and taken from the famous 1975 Bollywood (Indian Hindi) action-adventure film, 'Sholay'. Noraly: "I bought Savannah, a Honda CRF250L. I chose [sic] this bike for being light, reliable, and because she was the most affordable..." Many people, male and female, like to give their vehicle a name.

Lots of 'budget' bikes are referred to as "More than the sum of their parts", but after taking a test ride on a Speed 400, it is exactly that, many times over. The engine feels way stronger than the claimed power, the suspension is great, the fit/finish are top notch.
And, as you said, it's SO LIGHT. It changes direction like a housefly. I was dragging pegs just scrubbing tires back and forth within my lane.
Genuinely, the only complaint I could come up with was not particularly liking the dash, but that was more to do with wishing the tach and speedo were swapped around versus actually disliking the look.

Great video. I’ve been riding almost 30 years. Started on a Suzuki GS500, GS550, Bandit 600, 1200, Harley Dyna, Kawasaki Vulcan 900. I have the Bandit 600 and Vulcan 900, but I’ve wanted a bike that takes me back to the elemental feel and simplicity of that GS500, a bike that weighed just 372 lbs dry. The Bandit is a hoot, but much heavier than the GS. I’ve had my eye on the Speed Twin 900 for a while, but the price has gone up a lot. I really like the look of the Speed 400, and the value it brings. It doesn’t need to be the fastest bike I own: I sold the Bandit 1200 in favor of keeping the 600, because the bigger bike was too much. Something that can commute easily and carve up a back road, that I can buy new, is a really enticing deal.
