Teaching a bombproof down command could save your dogs life.
I may have been a little short with timelines in this video as every dog is different. This is something Cowboy learned quickly but we continue to practice to keep his skills sharp.
I learned a lot of these lessons the hard way. The mission of this channel is to help you learn from my wins and loses so you don’t have. They’re here for a good time, not a long time. Let’s make it count!🤘🏼

When I first teach it, I go to a soft surface like grass or carpet. In my experience some dogs are reluctant to down on a hard surface until they learn it. Thanks for the video!

Great point for some dogs. My dog just happens to not care if it was a puddle of mud or a plush carpet lol

Thank you for this. Just found your channel this morning. Subscribed! I got my dog, Dusty, at our local animal shelter not realizing that he was a red heeler because i was not familiar with the breed (just thought he was cute). I am in love with him.

My ACD, Koda was trained by his previous handler. He sits on command and will stay as well. I will definitely try the down command. Thanks so much for sharing this tip. 👍🙂.

This video is over a year old, but even if you're not a professional dog trainer, I just hired one and she charged me $350 so far, not impressed and she hasn't kept her word.

We've always had a problem with our ACDs knowing the difference between when we were in training mode vs not. The reinforcement via the hidden lease is a great way to get past that. Thanks much!

I'm enjoying your videos! I adopted a young Stumpy Tail from the shelter and new to this breed, not a lot out there or books.
    Thank you!

Love the videos! We’re in the process of looking for a heeler to adopt and doing research before hand. Great tips and much easier learning from someone that isn’t a “professional” trainer. Very easy to understand and apply.

One year old cattle dog rescued 4 months ago. Doing extremely well with all commands... especially for a teenager! He knows down on and off leash. He's finished basic obedience class with flying colors. What we can't figure out is how to have him stop in place and down. He doesn't go down until he is right in front of me. This in itself is good but I'd like to train him to drop on the spot. If he were on one side of the street and me on another, I wouldn't want him coming to me first! Any suggestions?

Awesome work! I would suggest starting closer and gradually increasing your distance away, not moving farther until you master that distance you're at. In the beginning I really emphasized by snapping and pointing down to show i meant for him to stop in his tracks wherever he was

My red heeler cattle dog is 2years old he's so smart we live in the woods and he runs freely chasing squirrels and barking at crows so how can I train him down ? He's very protective of me and aggressive towards strangers any suggestions would be appreciated

just like this video. put a leash on him and they're so smart he'll pick it up quickly most likely (as long as you're doing it right). Once you teach this then you can switch to an e-collar since he is always off leash to continue practicing. I can make a video on them - when used properly they can be great tools to allow more off leash freedom
