I’m so pleased that my blues stopped nipping at my heels as they did alot as puppies. It just fell away . Wheelbarrows yes, still. Bicycle rides yes, nipping at the wheels starting out then they get into the sprint and keep their sprinting focus. Love my blues.
they mature out of a lot of behaviors for sure but i never urge people to wait for them to mature. have to be proactive in shaping the behaviors you want too
I agree, if you have a cattle dog, as an owner you need to absolutely “nip” everything in the bud, no slacking allowed! They will overtake and always try and run the show if allowed.😉

We recently adopted a dog that looked exactly like a Lab, but turned out to have a super high prey drive like I've never seen even on any UA-cam video! He's so intense he makes me dislike him sometimes, and different to most dogs you see on the streets, but I'm hoping that with videos like this we can keep him and others safe and give him a permanent home.

Yes Wallace likes to go for the wheels of the rubbish bin…esp when I’m wheeling it out…not viscous but very excited..Wal is 10 months old..thanks for yr vids very helpful..

Great video Jack... "The leave it!" command is of THE most commands you dog needs to know. I taught my female cattle dog this from the day I rescued her... over here in Sydney Australia there was a time when someone ( probably a dog hater who never had pets as a kid cause his parents didn't) decided to bait the local dog area with poisoned meat. consequently a few dogs had to get rushed to the vet> I am always watching my dog when she gets too excited

Thank God poisoning is illegal here. Even tho you would have to prove who did it so some assholes still do it. That's the most cowardly way to handle an unwanted animal.
We found a dying barn owl one time that had ate a poisoned rodent or something. That was the most horrifying thing to watch and animal control said it was too late to do anything about it. Apparently they were having a lot of similar calls in the area. Even some people's pets had gotten poisoned and died.
Yes, yes, yes!! Thank you. Loved the idea of treats on his leg! Yes on trash can tires, though it is random. Will try to get our deer head. Working on leave it corrections on tires. I do think using leave it when he sees other dogs actually sets him off worse. Best video yet in talking through my current issues. Need the mountain bike tire video! Lol. Keep em coming!

Yes, back in the early nineties we had a blue cattle dog and it would attack any type of wheel, it would try to attack car, and bike tryes and even the wheels on the lawn mower, it would bite the front wheel and drag the mower across the yard. It could also play soccer with a soccer ball
My ACD gets so ecited when he goes for a ride in the truck. It sounds like I'm riding with a hyena. Any tips for getting him to calm down while riding in a vehicle? Thanks in advance. Love your videos. They're very helpful.

Depends on the age of the puppy...but assuming 8 weeks old...potty training, engagement, and recall (plus basic manners) are where i start
The last ACD I had was a tire biter and I never thought f it as a herding thing. I finally took the tires off an o!d trash can and gave them to her. M my present ACD IS FAR worse attacking anything with wheels. Will start the leave it command on her but she is so fast at the sneak attack.

OMGosh, I do the same thing with my cattledog with the treats on their legs in the down position. 😄. When I do that she can't look at the treats she always turns her head away and I see that Cowboy did that a little bit too.
I've noticed people often compare the blue heeler to a golden retriever to drive the point of how different they are. So I was wondering if anyone has any tips for my new 9 week old pup I picked up from a shelter. She is a blue heeler and golden retriever mix. I've watched the 5 reason why not to get a blue heeler and why to get one so I can try to understand what I need to prepare for now but if any one has any tips for this kind of mix id be grateful. Ive owned golden retrievers in the past but this is the first blue heeler even tho she's a mix. 😅

i can make a video on it! I have an off leash hiking video. Just lots of leash work, recall, leave it, and basic obedience training are the basics of it. and practice.
I never use the word ‘no’ together with the cue ‘leave it.’ “No” is reserved for behaviors that might be dangerous.. We believe it’s best to reserve power word ‘no’ for a behavior that could get the dog hurt, or someone else hurt.
mine went after trash can wheels, skateboard wheels, bike wheels, lawn mower wheels, lawnmower and weed trimmer when on.
I had to train him with high value treats while desensitizing him. i would place treats on the objects while stationary and gradually move the object or turn them on and rewarded when he wouldn't go after it. at 3 years he is cool now with those objects. he hasn't had an outburst with anything new...so far.
They are full on and need alot of direction they look to their owners for commands, discipline and praise
they'll stare into your soul for it. lol

My rescue cattle dog/Shep mix is afraid of cars. She is obsessed with balls, geckos, lizards and cats. She will not return balls even with treats. She's great with sit and stay even if other dogs are passing by. Very food driven. She's 13 now so not as crazy active as your pup.

My cattle dog despises electric scooters. He'll bite them, even when parked.
Mine likes to herd my broom and vacuum 🤪oh yea she likes the tires on our garbage container when moving.

My cattle dogs love tires and garbage can and garbage Truck tires. We even lost one due to tire chasing.😢

Mine will still go wheels but only when she's on the lead and she only does it too 'G' me up. I tricked into thinking that she was on the lead when she wasn't. She was so embarrassed after going some tyres when she was off lead that she's never done it since.
How to stop a 6 mo. Old male Heeler from growling over his food bowl when I make him wait and leave it, until I say okay!
Once I let him start eating his food and pet him on his head he growls and hovers over the food bowl. What do I do next?
This is an interesting one Susan. I don't speak to things I don't have experience with and I have never had this issue. I start the day I get my dog with putting my hands around their food. I would continue practicing leave it and impulse control. The more desensitizing the better.
If I had this issue myself I would Show him that you don't plan to take his food, but you are the alpha. Frankly I wouldn't tolerate that at all. He is just resource guarding but still not acceptable. Seek some professional trading if you are unsure.
mine would chase cars and bite tires until it caught one... it spun her around and whacked her on the pavement. She got up shaken and decided that cars were best left alone . .. None of this training in these vids ever works. I just take mine out a LOT and expose her to lots of different situations and she slowly figures it out.
Mine bites the lawn mower when running, which scares the crap out of me. So she's in the house when mowing.

My female blue heler turned 1 last week.
She bites
Any thing with a handle,and the bucket on my tractor. Hates the hair drier when I take her to the groomer,so now need to find a new groomer.
My neighbor is cutting timber on property next to me and she attacked the grapple on the log loader.
I'm 70 years old, she is my third heeler. I can hardly walk as I have several issues with back,hip,ect. She loves to play with thrown toys,but doesn't bring them back to me,likes to play keep away.
My last heeler would run when I was on the side by side,she likes to ride with me and bark at tree limbs, bushes ect .
She is very active,observant and Loves to chew on EVERYTHING. IM hoping she will calm down some soon.

Red heeler 2yrs female - loves attacking anything the nosier the better gets taken to work by my civil contractor partner and try’s to attack the diggers.

You taught him leave it but then when he went for the bear head you said leave it then he went again and you used ahp! NO! Aren't you supposed to keep commands consistent?
i said leave it first but you are right i could have used leave it again. I prefer to say a command once though and if they don't listen or are about to break from it then I say "no." This has worked for me so that i only generally have to say something once and not multiple times before they do it
@@diydogguy I'm getting so confused with all the training videos available. Most say keep it consistent. You say use 1. leave it! 2. ahp! 3. no! all for the same desired affect. Sorry but to me this is bad advice in comparison.
@@_spider_jeff i wouldn't say "ahp" is a command. sorry that slipped out, i'm not a perfect robot LOL. I say the command, if they don't listen i say "no" rather than saying "leave it leave it leave it leave it" and diluting the command.
the important thing is pick what works for you and stick to it
@@diydogguy I'm sorry but "ahp" is TOTALLY a command and NO is another. That's 3 commands for one action. You are teaching new owners incorrectly. Stick with ONE command for each action and no other way.
