I think the PS3 is a great option to start a collection. The console can be connected to a modern TV via hdmi. Games on bluray, have solid boxes, 90% that the games will be scratch free and in good condition, unlike CD and DVD media. Many PS3 games have never been re-released on PS4/XONE, most of the hit games are fairly inexpensive. There are plenty of shooters, slashers and platformers for 6-8 hours that are still perfectly playable to this day and will add some variety to the gaming experience compared to endless 40+h open world games. As for PS2 - it's a great platform, but it's very difficult to enjoy it in modern conditions, when to play normally on a modern TV, you need to buy upscalers and other devices, more expensive than the console several times. As an option - is to buy games on physical media to feel a certain attachment to the game, but play through an emulator. Instead of the Wii for modern tv, I would suggest considering the Wii U - as it is backwards compatible and allows you to play via hdmi.
After being released from prison in 2016 / 2017 i collected everything at 1st. Recently i sold off the last of it, a bunch of switch stuff, to buy a Playstation ecosystem. 2TB SSD & both vr headsets. 90 % of the collection is physical for PS4 / PS5 / Playstation VR / PSVR2. I had a lot of NES, SNES, N64 games. Had a lot of PS4 games awhile back. Happy with my current collection of around 100 games. I didnt like switch much, but mario kart was great, & so were some 3rd party games like Wolfenstien 2 & FF7 Crisis Core. The graphics are a lil dumbed down so i Upgraded & gettin ready for the 5 Pro. If i start collecting backwards itll be more ps4, Dreamcast, NES, Gamecube
Imo Best answer is pick a console and build that library slowly, but be open to grab something that might be fun like im a ps2 guy but if I see a 360 game I might aswell if its a couple bucks, I suggest getting 1-3 games depending, when you go outside yalls house. No need to spend your whole paycheck on things be wise with yalls choices cuz fomo can grab you and not let go
I think its a great investment for my kids when i pass away. Theyll be middle aged by then but they can enjoy or sell it off as they choose. My VR collection seems to have devalued but my PS5 collection hasnt. FF7 skyrocketing in value & the BD / Xmas gifts from my BM has kept the value of the gameroom high.
If building a collection I would suggest looking at consoles that interest you. Write down a list of the consoles From there being logical and price savvy, I would then go for the console with the cheapest library or has the most potential to grow in price that is out (or being phased out of production). Some 'bargain' consoles that have potential to go up a lot in price as, PS3, PS4, Xbox One, Wii and maybe PS2.
There’s really no wrong way to start a retro game collection ! What I’d say is just get stuff that you really like and want to play ! Other than that take your time finding deals and also go after the very good condition items don’t waste your time or money buying damaged stuff it will be harder to sell and worth much less down the line (if you decide to sell it in the future )
For me it’s Super Nintendo / Super Famicom because you can play Japanese and North American carts and there are a lot of deals. Can also play gameboy with the adapter.
Do not get a switch lite. Unless you only wanna play in handheld ur missing out on half the experience. Used switches are always available for cheap nowadays on facebook marketplace or pawn shops.
I strongly agree you’d be missing out on fighting your homies in smash ultimate on the tv which I’ve been doing recently and it’s a lot of fun ! Not to mention how much better the OLED screen is for when you wanna be lazy and lay on the couch while playing games
For starting a retro game collection from scratch, I’d go GBA. Backwards compatible with GB and GBC. It has a wide array of the most iconic video games, and it’s cartridge based. I think if you’re going to start a retro collection from scratch, it must be a cartridge system. Great video, keep it up
If I had to restart... geez... probably just the systems and handhelds I want and everdrives / modded... 🤣 I'm not restarting when I was buying 15 fish years ago to like a few years ago I stopped retro. I have what I want I'm done. Prices are to high for it to be fun.

If you're going to invest in something for ur kids, get em a damn index fund. No one wants to sell off dad's old toys lol

Keep in mind a Nintendo Wii gives you access to GameCube physically as well. So consider that when choosing between Wii and ps2.
For me gamecube and ds was The retro stuff I was going after switch is primarily only modern stuff i want unless some cool rpg is on the ps4/ps5
