    About 70% of my collection is games I will play eventually. Based on that alone I have too much stuff. Organized hoarding is an interesting way of looking at it. I refer to my collection as expensive plastic and cardboard lol.

    I've never understood the argument of "why collect games when you can just emulate them all." In fact, I find the two go hand in hand. Emulating games is a good way to find out if you'd be willing to throw the money down to add a physical copy to your collection.

      I'm not so sure people understand what a hobby is and why people collect the things they do. Maybe learn a little psychology instead of being dumbfounded as to why someone would want to collect.

    I'm sure many are comparing you to scott the woz, and there are some parts that seem almost direct conversions from his video on collecting, but I think you do add things that weren't covered, like the risk financially to try and out collect others, a tendency we all kinda feel when we start collecting. I spent a lot of money on my first year and now, especially going from community college to uni, need to slow down greatly, and balance budgeting between necessities and still getting things I want. Sometimes collecting has to go on the backburner, and that's ok.

    • @Throggy

      When I first started collecting, oh man I was blowing money left and right. I'm glad that I calmed down because it was really starting to get out of hand for me!

      @@Throggy Eh, I feel like a big name comes around and has a distinct style it makes a lot of people making similar videos unconsciously lean into it. Hell I thought about talking about games even. But I love seeing different people's different collections. For example, Scott seems to have only more recently begun fleshing out his collection for systems like the Dreamcast and PS1, while you seem to have gone for the approach I have, which is to spread out more evenly across different systems. Also, you can always tell which systems people love based on the different sizes of their collections, so long as you consider the environment they live in. Like, the dreamcast is such a cool system, but I feel like there's not much to collect for it. A lot of sports games, and a lot of games I already would get on the gamecube. And speaking of gamecube, if someone has a sizable gamecube collection in comparison to their other systems, you know they must really hate themselves and love gamecube because my god are they getting expensive.
      But it's cool to see what people choose to collect in the more infant stages. Scott's collection is cool, especially with how it's laid out across a whole room, and I envy his nice basement setup where he can space everything out to feel like a livable space WITH a game collection, and not a collection crammed into a living space or a living space just purely used to hoard games.
      But he started making videos well late into his collecting time. Meanwhile, it's neat to see your 31 gamecube games and see what you valued spending money on. For example, I'm somewhere around 50 gamecube games, but there's still quite a few must haves and key items I'm missing. I got Smash melee and Sunshine at too many games 2022, so only recently, and I am still missing air ride, mario kart, luigi's mansion, TTYD, and some other staples. So it's just neat to be able to follow the collection as you prioritize games.
      Keep going man. Your style is pretty similar sounding to scott the woz, but it's expected, and as you make more videos, I think you'll find yourself falling into niches in the way you speak and present stuff that will be more your own style with influence from scott.

    • @Throggy
      @Throggy  Рік тому

      @@TurtleSauceGaming I appreciate the kind words! And I agree, I've pushed more for an "even collection" rather than collecting heavily for one system. I own the most games for the Wii U, but I haven't bought anything for that particular system because I feel like I've collected everything for it besides 2 or 3 games.
      And then the Gamecube stuff..... it's costing me an arm and a leg to buy stuff for it. I bought Mario Party 5 CIB for $70 and I almost leaped for joy because that's the cheapest I've been able to find it locally and online. It's a shame on how much those games have gone up, and if they keep going up I'm just going to stop collecting for it honestly.
      And about the Scott thing, I feel like once I sort of settle down, I'll eventually find my own groove on how I want to do things. I think the thing I try to emulate the most is his flow/delivery. It's buttery smooth and keeps the viewer hooked, no matter the subject.

    I honestly think the collector's that tell new collector's to go after certain games or consoles are silly. The best advice you can give in my opinion, is to tell someone to collect things you're passionate about and know you'll enjoy. You like Zelda? Great, start there and work your way up, you like Call of Duty, not my cup of tea but go ahead and start collecting those COD games. Start with the things you enjoy and know you'll want to play and before you know it you have a nice collection you can be proud of.
    Think that's the problem with social media and the human brain, we want to catch up to others and have what they have and that's no way to live. Just go at your own pace and budget and just enjoy the ride if you're truly in it for the love of it and not trying to flip which is a whole other problem.

  • @burntwaffle1743
    @burntwaffle1743 2 роки тому +6

    Love your advice, it always feels like you're told what to and not to buy. Personally I like to get a (Nintendo) system and for the next year or so pick up a few games that I really would like for the system. I love to experience games on their original hardware. Most people I know dislike Nintendo and their consoles. But I think it's the uniqueness that drives them away, which for me and many others is one of the reasons we like Nintendo's hardware and software.

    • @Throggy
      @Throggy  2 роки тому +3

      I've stopped asking people what I should buy at this point because everyone likes to tell you their preferences instead of what you're interested in.
      And that's interesting about Nintendo. Where I live, Nintendo is like the hot ticket item. The stores around me can't keep older Nintendo consoles on their shelves. And used Switch consoles?!! Those sell a few hours after they are traded in.

    The life of a game collector:
    Early days
    - Pfft. Who buys more games when there's still lots to do in Zelda. 😏
    Coming of age
    - I only buy games I know I'm going to play soon. 😊
    Adulthood
    - OMG! This guy is basically giving away his copy of [Expensive Trash] for FREE! 🥵
    Death bed
    - If I sell my last kidney now, I can at least have it written on my tombstone that I owned NWC. 💀

      @Throggy  7 місяців тому

      Pretty much LOL. At this point, I'm making time to where I can play the games I have, but of course, with new consoles coming out, the collection and backlog will only continue to grow. Maybe when I retire I can devote some time to playing the games. Or like my mom said, whenever the kids move out you get more free time.

    The whole "it's best to play a game on its original console" is 100% in your head. I've played enough ports to know that. Also, for games where there are multiple versions of the same game but on different systems (something like Arkham Asylum), what do you consider the "true version?" Or even non-exclusive games where the version varies depending on what console you buy it for? Like the SNES version of Aladdin vs the Sega version of Aladdin?
    Also, for someone who has the money to collect all the consoles that have ever existed, have room for them in their house/apartment, and own a CRT TV, I'm sure it's nice to have that sentiment. For all else, I don't think playing a game's port...or even emulation...is that big of a deal. Hell, I'd argue some of the ports are upgrades to the original. Chrono Trigger for the DS, for instance. Not to mention, getting different ports of a game can be part of a collection, too. Going back to the Arkham games, I have several different versions of Arkham City, for instance, because it's one of my favorite games.

    In a certain sense I've always been a collector because I still have all my childhood NES games and a fair number are CIB because even as a kid I recognized the value of keeping my stuff "all together". As far as when I actually started seriously collecting, I too began in my final year of college. The very first thing I ever bought off ebay was a Sega Genesis bundle that came with nine games for 25 bucks. That was, of course, before retro gaming was a huge deal and most of my consoles were bought back when they were actually affordable. I consider myself VERY lucky because if I were just getting into it now, stuff like the Sega Saturn would be out of reach.

    • @Throggy
      @Throggy  5 місяців тому

      In regards to getting into now.... I wish I would have started way back when I first got a job at 16 lol. I would have been able to afford way more stuff back then because retro gaming was dirt cheap when I was in highschool. And right now I can't find good deals in my area because of a few resellers in my area that snatch everything up the minute it hits Facebook Marketplace or even my local game store. I've sort of taken a pause on collecting just due to some financial strain, but I think I'm going to go after some cheap FPS games like the COD franchise, Battlefield, etc since I like FPS campaigns.

    Great video! Your collection is so similar to mine but you got more consoles :)
    I got "only" Wii (GC compatible), New 3DS XL, Switch and the three great Mini consoles NES, SNES and Genesis.
    My "strategy", or what to call it, is to only buy the games that I wanna play. So I skip game series like Pokemon, Pikmin, Animal Crossing, Minecraft just to mention a few.
    I only care about what I like, not what other people like. I got around 30-35 games per console. Maybe more than that for Switch. Always physical copies!
    Consoles like NES and SNES are special. I'm fine with these Classic Mini consoles. Honestly, that works great for me. You get the correct controllers and you get a great game library. Of course I miss some games on these Classic Minis like Mega Man 1/3/4/5/6 and some more games that I had for NES in the childhood.
    Never say never! I might buy a NES and collect for that console some day. There are some stores that got NES games and there's also some good sites where I can buy directly from other people. So I know how to collect but the big question is: do I want to collect for NES in the future? And same thing for SNES... Only time will tell...

    • @Throggy
      @Throggy  Рік тому

      If I had the money I would just buy everything I want and call it a day lol. Issue is, since I make UA-cam videos, a lot of what I collect is for particular videos, but I try my best to come up with ideas that involve games I already have, or games that are on the cheaper side. I can't afford to buy games like Chrono Trigger or any other expensive games that people may want to hear about.
      I appreciate you for stopping by the channel! Happy hunting, and yes, physical media >>> digital media!

    • @cjeelde
      @cjeelde Рік тому +1

      Same here! Would buy so much more. But with a limited wallet I do my best to find good deals for new games. Physical copies of course!
      I've actually bought a few digital downloads. A good example is Castlevania Anniversary Edition on huge sale. Costed around 4 dollar. But I've already bought the physical copy :)
      I like that your strategy: games that you already have, mostly.
      Speaking of the weakness for physical games... my Wii console's disc reader stopped work (common problem), so I bought a "new" Wii. That costed not much more than repairing the console.
      I'm happy with my collection. One thing that still hurts is that I let a friend borrow 3 GC games (Mario Sunshine, Zelda WW and Metroid Prime 1) and I never got them back! I should never have let that person borrow the games!
      I got Mario Sunshine kind of back thanks to Super Mario 3D All Stars. But I still miss the two other games.
      So that can be a subject for a future video from you: "collecting mistakes". So one mistake is to let a friend borrow some games and you never get the games back. But there's probably other kind of mistakes we all have done.
      Another mistake is when it's a great deal and you buy only one copy. Why not buy 2-3 copies? That will cost a bit more but it might be worth it in the long run.
      Also yet another mistake that's not a mistake but it can feel like that... when you sell your console with all games to afford to buy another console. But it might be a better deal to save up money for the new console even if it takes "X months".

And much of it is nostalgia-based. Ya streaming on Spotify is easy but look at those who stream music the same as those who download video games. But nostalgia and the feeling of ownership/connection when buying and collecting physical music is the exact same as physical video games (I collect both).

      I've been debating on "downsizing" somewhat, especially my Wii U collection, but I just like the console that much that it's been hard for me to commit to it lol

      @@Throggy Yea, I used to be a materialistic person, but after contemplating costs, space and overall convenience, I decided to have a minimalistic approach.
      And you are right, I sell finished games because I know I will not be playing them ever again. I only keep games that I am constantly playing and they tend to be digital for convenience. I used to keep nostalgic and rare games but imo, there's no point keeping them if I don't tend to play them again. For me, I prefer experiencing the game rather than collecting.
      Btw, there's not much to downsize your Wii U collection, that system has one of the smallest libraries lol.

    Sucks you got rid of your gamecube collection back then. I have mine, including some pretty pricey games, but I did the same with my ps2 and games from my childhood and so sad I did. Slowly getting some ps2 games back, but I still need a ps2 to play it. Might go for backward compatible ps3, so I can play both ps2 and ps3 games right out The gate. Roms work, but having tree physical games just has a great feeling to it.
    Just got my wii u and now waiting for it to come in. It'll be nice to finally get it and get the few dlc I want before the eshop closes

      Oof man, those backwards compat PS3's that can play PS2 games are pretty expensive. I thought about investing in one until I saw what they were going for online.... it's definitely a hit to the ole wallet for sure. Best of luck to you if you can find one for a good price!

    Modern games can't really be obtained in big box stores much anymore. Most of the time you have to pre-order, or just order it online. GameStop is a wasteland of the same games nobody wanted for years, and lots of empty shelves. You think they got in a bunch copies of Super Bomber Man R 2 today? Heck no. They never get anything new. Same thing at Walmart, more empty shelves than actual games.

      Interesting. My local Wal Mart is usually filled with games. It also has about 10 PS5's and 10 PS4's just sitting in the case. I think it depends on the area though. Where I live, it's more of a poorer community, and I think a lot of people just can't afford the new consoles.

    Except with movies, streaming services dont include special features,. E-readers will never replace the feeling of a real book. With video games, 100% of the game is emulatable. Unless you count it sitting on your shelf a part of the game. Nostalgia making you spend $50 on 20 year old games is amusing.

    • @Laz3rCat95

      Agree, it's fine that he values the nostalgia of playing games on their original hardware but he can't act like that's a unique phenomenon just for gamers. All the other things he was comparing it against can also have unique nostalgia attributed to them when consumed in the way people used to consume them. Like you said, some people prefer reading hard copies of books, or watching DVDs instead of streaming movies. Or for music, yes, some people also prefer listening to and collecting vinyl records or CDs rather than streaming it.
