I own a 1977 Chevrolet Bison, the Generals cousin. Black and chrome 8v71 dd 13 speed
Those GMC 6x6 trucks did so much to help win WW2!
In fact Opel was owned by GMC... they earn.... no matter German Víctory or Allied Víctory
Grandpa still has his old GMC in Mexico hualing corn , he loves that cab over lol
Hi have a nice day Torten?
@@remylopez4821 what ?
Hi have a nice day It is a type of truck that you see in Mexico they are called Tortons I remember as a young kid seen those when we would go visit family and they still use them today and I would get a kick if you ever see how they load those trucks up to see one of those going through a DOT station LOL Anyways thank you for responding but yeah look those things up you’ll see them on UA-cam
Hi have a nice day One more thing in Mexico DINAs are International here
@@remylopez4821 oh nah my grandpa bought it in the us , "exported" it to Mexico when he retired I forgot the model but I do now it has a wonderful Detroit in it
I'm going to mention this: Many of the GMC conventional medium duty trucks use the cab of the light duty pickups. The exception being the third gen top kicks.
An interesting addendum to this story would be that GM is actually re-entering the medium duty truck market this year in a joint venture with Navistar, who also terminated their medium duty trucks back in 2015. Look up Silverado 6500/International CV
@@drewscheller4956 I'm not too keen on International engines anymore. They will have to prove to me that they have gotten the bugs out. The 6.0 soured me.
@@terryrose6208 tje chevy/internationals have a 6.6 duramax
@@tristanprice2433 Wasn't that an engine that came out after they discontinued the six 0 or was that engine for the F 450 and up ? I have a 2005 F350 6.0 that has only about 142 thousand miles which is not a lot for a diesel. I've had nothing but breakdowns on the engine. I have no other experience on Ford diesel engines except the 7.3 which I dearly love.
@@tristanprice2433 Sorry, I thought we were still talking about Fords. Disregard my previous reply. Yes, I have a little experience with the older Duramax engines. Seem to be ok. I think GM also uses a small Cummings six cylinder engine in some of their pickups ?
The GMC ASTROs and GMC Generals were sharp work trucks!
Really loved the GMC line of trucks.🥰I grew up seeing the Crackerbox and General trucks. They sure made some nice looking rigs back in the day and continued for a long time. Tis a shame they don’t do big trucks anymore. Merry Christmas from the Porters!
GMC, was originally marketed as "General Motors Truck" in the early years, and was a division of "Yellow Cab & Coach Company", before becoming the GMC Bus & Coach division. Very durable & long lasting truck, I must say. Another great video!
GMC was origunally Grabowsky Motor Company …
My uncle had GMC Brigadiers w/ 6-71 Detroit's in them back in the late 80's and those were the 1st trucks that had I got to drive. He had a good size yard and all that I was able to get a feel of truck driving before I ended up years late getting my CDL.
Wayne Norbrey, Jr I grew up around my family’s fleet of 9500s with the 671, which was just an earlier version of yours. Ours had the headlights on the grill.
As a kid, I lived along US 35. This was in the per-interstate highway days, and truck traffic was very heavy on Rt 35. Hennis and Roadway ran steadily though the area, using Mack H models, but one didn't have to look to know when a McLean truck went by. The scream of those old GMC engines in those cannonballs was unmistakable.
I have driven a few different trucks over the years, including Mack, IH, Ford, and even one Pete. My absolute favorite, though, was a GMC Astro. Sweetest thing even put on wheels!
PS: Believe it or not, the Mack F model was my second choice. Not only nice to drive overall, the low noise level was a standout. It was unquestionably the quietest cab I was ever in. Still, it wasn't even close to a match for the comfort or visibility of the GMC Astro.
An interesting addendum to this story would be that GM is actually re-entering the medium duty truck market this year in a joint venture with Navistar, who also terminated their medium duty trucks back in 2015. Look up Silverado 6500/International CV
The Crackerbox and then the Astro are my two favorite GMC models.
The crackerbox is a gem
I think snow man was driving a GMC General in the beginning of Smokey and the bandit II,,,,!!!!AWESOME video!!🇺🇸💪
Yes it was the 2nd movie also in Knight Rider show was a General
Hey, Jacks Chrome Shop, former trucker, lifelong lover of transportation here. I just wanted to let you know how much I have been enjoying your channel. Over the years I've collected and read literature about all of the heavy truck manufacturers and getting this information in video format is wonderful. I wish you were able to make full-length documentary films about commercial trucks but I know that even a 10-20 minute video like this takes a lot of time and effort to put together. Thanks for the informative entertainment you provide . Keep up the great work and happy holidays. I look forward to your next upload.
Thank you so much for that. 🙏 we are planning on making longer documentary videos after we run out of truck history topics. We still have a decent list of about 15-20 to go, but in 2020 we’d like to do at least one 25-30 “mini-documentary”. Thanks for all the support on our shorter videos, too. 😊
Drove a 1979 GMC General in 1985. It was noisy, gutless but I loved it, I came out of a 75 international cab over, so huge improvement.
Lol, must have been a 318.
Thank you so much for getting this video posted! I’ve always loved these trucks, and was waiting on this one.
I owned a 2008 GMC canyon 5 cyl, it was a parts truck before I purchase it, I love it.
GMC Big Rigs is in my top #3 of 5 favorite of all-time ever
Didnt even watched yet,and i can already say “i love this video!” Was waiting for those gmc! Thanks!
Those conventional GMC GENERAL trucks are one of the best looking rigs ever made. They got Ford beat in the beauty contest.
Both the GMC N9 (General) and the Ford LTL9000 are among the most under-appreciated trucks ever built.
In 1980 I drove 5 1977 cab over trucks, GMC, FORD, KW., PETE, INTERNATIONAL, the Ford and GMC both had better heaters, and. A/C than the rest. The Astro, had big windows, I put aluminium foil at the top of the window for about 1 and a half foot, then used cardboard at the bottom wrapped in aluminum foil it helped the A/C work much better
I disagree with you 100%. The Ford LTL 9000 definitely looks better than the GMC General, no comparison.
I have always liked GMC's. I own quite a few. Good video.
and a jimmy haulin hogs
I used to drive a General with a 475 Detroit. It was a pretty decent truck to go up and down the road. I really enjoy your videos! I've always been a truck fanatic and there's lots of things you show that I've forgotten or didn't know. Keep them coming!
I had a buddy who owned & ran a GMC Astro hauling dairy products from western upstate NY into NYC in the 1970-80s, he really liked that truck.
Love the Astro at the beginning of Beverly hills cop that's pulling doubles full of cigarettes and mashing everything in sight
When I saw that as a kid, I always thought the truck driver was Kramer from Seinfeld
I think of the GMC general off Smokey and the bandit 2 lol
Same! I love all of the rigs from the SATB movies.
I thought that was a kenworth in Smokey and the bandit?
I’m a old school GMC die hard trucker there were and still my #1 heavy truck right up to the end General then unfortunately that idiot barby doll sold GMC heavy and medium duty trucks Volvo
When I got the chance to get my Class A, a small company owner took me out in his 81 Brigadier and taught me to pull doubles, net and tie down. Once I got my license, I ran his 77 Astro with a 350BC Cummins, a 10 spd, and Armstrong steering. Put a lot of miles on that day cab from the Ca/Mexico line, to the Bay area and everything in between. Only thing I didn't like about it, was it was a "Day cab" and a real short wheelbase, (was an ex grocery store fleet tractor)so the only place to store ropes and straps were on the passenger side floor and seat.
Some of the best looking trucks that weren’t long nose trucks.
Gmc General is no.1 rig on earth!!!
I really like the General and the Astro GMC's
My husband loves them as well he is always looking for one to restore
@@shellyweiers121 I run a heavy truck scrap yard, I have a nice Astro with a 8v71 Detroit and a 13spd, sold my 81 general about 3 years ago, I come across a lot of old Jimmy's still, I'm in NW Indiana
Thank you graintruckguy I will let him know we are in Minnesota
I also really like the Crackerboxes
@@jwyarber5299
I bet if had to drive one you would lose your enthusiasm for it pretty fast
My dad had two of the trucks at 4:55 , tandem gravel trucks with Detroit Diesel 6v-53 , 5 & 4 trans, biggest POS ever built, almost broke him.
Hope you cover Hayes and Pacific trucks some time soon.
Ha I'm setting in my GMC watching this video👍👍👍
Not one photo of a Schwan's truck! I feel ripped off!...
Great video as always, thank you. 😁
We used to have a 1988 GMC Sierra 7000 top kick gasser dump truck with a plow and a 6 speed manual.
I like some of those trucks and the Astro was great to ride in
thank you sir!
I love this channel
The conventional Volvo GMs looked nice.
Love this truck my first year at t&c
Grande G M C!! A mi me gustan las silverado, salds desde Uruguay
I have a B4000, love it
Where did you find that Thomas proctor truck? Didn’t expect to see my hometown on this video. They built the sea wall along the shore
back in the 90s I had a 1973 GMC astro 8v71 318 Detroit 13 over 433 years on 44,000lb reyco suspension. it had factory delete front brakes. factory stretched frame, a guy told me it hauled tank trailers when it was new, extra wheelbase was for a liquid pump. it had Dayton wheels and duel stacks and mufflers had no baffles. it was a scream'in Jimmy!! a larger sleeper cab. I was I my early 20s so I take it out bobtail just to run it through the gears and hear the exhaust, for a 20 something driving it was a good time. now I drive a late model small Detroit automatic wow what a difference 4 decades plus make. the only Jimmy I have is a Serria 1500 short box 4.3 manual trans .
Interesting how the various generations of the Topkick trucks match the body lines of their respective light duty trucks.
Love my GMC Sierra
those old cab overs are so cool
And thats a big 10-4 good buddy.
5:01 beautiful pairing 😍
I have a 1928 GMC Model T-19 one-ton truck. It has a split flathead 6 Pontiac engine.
A GMC Topkick was used for Ironhide's Vehicle mode in the first three Transformers Movies :D
Not mentioned is that many GMC trucks were equipped with the Hydra-Matic transmission. On of the first equipping trucks with automatic transmissions.
GMC was always known for their heavy trucks as much as their light ones. Car??? LOL
It's ok. I love all these videos. Keep 'em comin'
You forgot to mention that GMC invented air ride suspension for heavy duty trucks! 😏
Humphreys invented the air ride. Hendrickson brought it out for class 8 trucks. Ford first installed it in semi trucks in 1974.
I'll own me a General one day
Awesome video. Couple of notes 1- The company was founded by Max Grabowski in Pontiac, Michigan in 1902, and was purchased by Billy Durant in 1909. 2- It's a "Deep water fording" kit lol. and they're still a thing offered for most military vehicles.
source:en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rapid_Motor_Vehicle_Company
regarding note #1 - the original Grabowski Motor Company was founded in Detroit by Max and Morris Grabowski in 1900. In 1905 the Rapid Motor Vehicle Company was founded in Pontiac by the Grabowsky brothers (I have no idea what became of their first company - I assume that it failed). Rapid apparently made a successful product and beginning in 1908, Mr. Durant began buying stock in the company. By 1909 he had controlling interest and Rapid became a division of General Motors. The Rapid brand name was dropped in 1912, and the product was known as General Motors Truck thereafter. Interestingly, after Rapid was acquired by GM, the Grabowsky brothers started another company called Grabowsky Power Wagon in Hamtramck. It operated until at least 1911. Their manufacturing facilities were acquired by Budd and Maxwell.
Excelente saludos desde Colombia quiero una camiseta de esas
GMC was also a major player in the bus industry.
GMC started out in 1914 i believe. Before that I believe it was called Rapid and Reliance.
You should do a video on the Diamond Reos
Bummed out that there was no mention of the most famous General of all time, Cledus "The Snowman" Snow's truck in Smokey and The Bandit II
I know it would make the videos somewhat longer but you don't talk about engine and transmission available in the different models which would have been nice to know along with approximately how many were sold in these different configurations and where any were built. You don't tell us where they were produced.
Our Diesel History series covers engines, transmissions will be here soon. Holidays have us on a weird schedule right now, sorry folks.
Did I just see the Famous Truck from the T.V. show Sanford & Son?? 2:35
The successor to the GMC TopKick/Chevrolet Kodiak was the Chevy Silverado 6500, which for some reason did not get a GMC counterpart
Time for the last of the big 3. Dodge heavy duty!!
Yes, coming soon.
It would have been good if GMC’s prime movers were mentioned. GMC inline6 engines were the best gas engines available then. GM Diesel engines were the exclusive Diesel engine of GMC for decades.
How about the Chevrolet Titan and Chevrolet Bison truck history?
My dad called the Astro, the fish bowl.
I drove many Astro's with mostly 8V71's and 10 speeds. Later in the early 90's my company switched to Generals with 8V92's with 13 speeds. They were great trucks But then for some odd reason GMC sold out to China owned Volvo heavy trucks.....Go figure????????????????
the president of GM came to Gogama ont. to see my grandfather in the 1930s use the GM trucks in the bush for the 1st. time pulling logs across the bush and frozen lakes
How about the long john with V-12
What show had the df860?
Excellent video but only one complaint, we get told how luxurious a truck is but there are no interior pictures.
However, this is a small gripe and does not prevent me from pressing the like button.
All the best, Dave.
back in 1990 I bought a new sierra pick up at Coffman gmc aurora Illinois a exclusively gmc light-medium heavy dealer ship in 1988 the transportation company that I was driving at assigned me to a new white-gmc brigadier tractor it was fully equipped cab cummins motor fuller 9-speed transmission it was a day cab but was a long wheel base for western states it was ordered for the Denver terminal but some how it made its way to the Chicago terminal I sure turned a lot of heads running around the Chicago area with it I don't recall the length of the wheelbase but we could have dropped a sleeper on it the terminal manager was thinking about it but it never happened it was a horrible ride because of the Hendrickson suspention
You guys should do Chevrolet they are pretty much identical to GMC but when the recession hit and they quit making both Chevrolet and GMC medium duties Chevrolet came back while unfortunately GMC hasn't yet.
Gmc wast found by William Durant it was founded by Grabowsky (Grabowsky Motor Company) in 1900
LOLOLOLOLOL!!
Dad had a pure hatred for Chevy, and GMC truck's, stemming back to the 30s.
I guess they used to use pure Babbitt for rod and main bearings, and were prone to frequent failures.
All I remember him saying was a rant about " Those Babbitt beating piles of junk ain't worth having!!"
"Not even good for a yard ornament"!
Come to think of it, he didn't have good thing's to say about Dodge either.
International or Ford was the only choices ya had, if ya had work to do!
I still think about him and my uncles arguing about those old outfits, Studebaker, Ford, Reo, dodge, ect.
Good times back in that old shop.
Ford and dodge also had babbit beaters back in the early days
A GMC GENERAL FIVE STAR WAS FEATURED IN THE 1994 MOVE CALLED, "SPEED"
Yes the low boy flat deck when they get the shot driver off the bus was being pulled by a General🤘🤘
And the GMC general was the truck flag mobile unit on #knightrider
You guys should have Bill Weaver on the show since you guys use one of his songs as intro music
Hey Jack's love the series, just out of curiosity, but will there be episodes on Marmon, Diamond, or Autocar in the future?
Cory Wilkins Diamond T or Diamond Reo?
@@nealfigary3288 of course both cause it would be hard making an episode of Diamond Reo without acknowledging Diamond T or Reo Motor company, since Diamond Reo was the merger of Reo and Diamond T
No mention of the very popular 318 and the legendary buzzin dozen diesel engines.

Great videos and truck history---what engines and trans were used in these GMC trucks
A lot of Detroit engine's 238/671 6v71 6v92 318/8v71 and my favorite a 435/8v92. You did see a lot of gmc with cummins in them as well every now and then you you might find one with a 1693 cat or 3406A or 3406B cat but they wasn't that common i liked a astro with a Cummins with a 13 speed wirh 3.70 rears it was a good combination

Could you make a history on Chevy Trucks
4:06 Anybody else notice that DIESEL is misspelled on that one?
I think VolvoWhite GMC was the first conventional to have an integral sleeper.
No back in the late 50's early 60's Mack , Brockway, Autocar trucks had integral sleeper's. Volvo did not come up with that idea.
THEY WERE CALLED FORDING KITS FOR FORDING WATER
😂 Dave can’t read. Sorry lol
Cool video. Can you 1 about Chevrolet trucks too? I know Chevy and GMC are made by the same company General Motors or GM for short. What about the new Silverado 4500 and 5500's?
Strangely, they use the just-superseded pickup cab rather than the new one. Even more strangely the 4500-5500-6500 models are Chevrolet-only. I'd love to know the logic behind that (and the polar opposite, the logic behind the Encore being a Buick rather than a GMC).
@@nlpnt yeah I saw for the cab, likely just didn't want the tooling for the old cabs to go to waste (as fun fact, the old Super Duty cabs are still used for the F-650/750) though no GMC version? extra weird. all I know is unless GM can get a home run in the EV space they're probably back on track to go bankrupt again.
The Rapid Motor Vehicle Company was founded in 1902 in Pontiac, Michigan, by brothers Max Grabowsky and Morris Grabowsky. They went on to build one-ton trucks and were the beginning of GMC Truck division after they were acquired by General Motors in 1909.[
