Always one of Nirvana's best. So sad and cold, you can hear Kurt's pain....

I like how he's trapping animals with the intent of eating them, but he can't bring himself to do it, so he keeps them as pets.

What I really like about it is how it evokes a sense of incompleteness in the listener…which is an invitation of sorts for the listener to participate in completing the meaning. Lyrically, it's almost structured like a haiku...where the things left unsaid are as important as the lyrics that are written down. This let's the listener project their own meaning onto the song. Which is perfect. My understanding is that Kurt was writing about an experience he had as teenager when he got bounced between various family members...from his mom's house, to his dad's house, to his grandparent's house, to an uncle's house...no one in his family really knew how to handle his unruliness...and the lyrics are about how his family thought he was just something in the way...a problem child who was getting handed off all the time b/c no one knew what to do with him. Kurt didn't live under the Wishkah bridge, but he did spend time homeless...sleeping on porches, in apartment hallways, and in the waiting room of hospitals. But the metaphor of living under a bridge is a really good way to convey the emotional rawness of being homeless...it's a metaphor that works as a sort of cultural shorthand for all the complexity that comes with being homeless. Everyone knows what living under a bridge means...what kind of lifestyle that entails. And since the lyrics are purposefully sparse, he went with a cultural shorthand for homelessness, rather than writing out each and every indignity that comes with homelessness. So...yeah, he didn't actually live under a bridge. But, emotionally, it's the best way to express what it's like to be homeless in only a few words. That's how I interpret it, at least.

I’ve listened to this song for 25 years and you just blew my mind. I’ve always taken the title of the song as the English speaking way of saying “ There is something in the way about the way she talks that I like” the ‘something in the way’ expression can be used as that way. But I never took it literally as there is something in my way. It makes so much more sense. Thank you for showing that to me.

"It's ok to eat fish cause they don't have feelings." This part of the song always hits me so hard. And I feel like because it is repeated several times it matters a lot. My interpretation of this song is... being homeless and having your values/moral code challenged. You are so desperate to survive that you justify actions to make it through. This can boomarang back with feelings of self-loathing. He was a vegetarian, he tried that to get rid of his intolerable stomach issues. Also lots of vegetarians do this for moral reasons, a huge one being the feelings of the animal they are declining to consume. A vegetarian isn't suppose to eat meat, he even talks about eating the grass. But under the bridge theirs an abundance of fish to consume. It's ok to eat fish because they don't have any feelings. So he is rationalizing the thing a way with that. He is justifying the things he does to survive, while also knowing it's also the things that are standing in the way. That's my thoughts anyway. :)

Thanks for allowing me to watch this with you. Acute insight. Thank you for sharing of yourself so openly with such specific a perspective. Bless your heart.
Bless your heart, Kurt Cobain. Courageously uninhibited and bleeding vulnerability throughout.
Peace & Love to you both.

Actually he was homeless and had to live on the streets and sometimes on his friends house when he was a teenager if I'm not mistaken, that's when he wrote this song

He was homeless for a short time and he lived under a bridge so pretty sure it has something to do with that.
