So many worthy bands lost in the sands of time…
You two are so necessary these days as examples of the younger generation helping to keep the musical past alive.
‘Hero and Heroine’ is the only Strawbs album I’ve owned, but it is still one of my all time favourite albums overall. If you’re inspired to check out more from this band, that album is a good place to start.

Try their albums From the Witchwood and Grave New World.
Strawbs have been a ‘popular’ band for decades! It’s unbelievable and frankly tragic that the younger generations are not familiar with their music 🤷‍♂️
Also...don’t get hung up on constantly comparing artists to others. Just accept that there were so many unique singers and players back then 🤔

SOOOO Glad you guys are hearing the Strawbs!! Dave Cousins and his mates. Other songs to try, if you want: The Hangman & the Papist, Benedictus, Lay Down, Queen of Dreams, Shepherd Song,Round & Round, Down by the Sea. They started out as a bluegrass or jug band type of thing, unusual for late 60's England, but then moved into progressive/folk/rock sound. They're terrific. I recommend a double-CD called Halcyon Days as a good overview of their catalog.

VERY Underrated band. They are hard to classify because they moved back and forth from folk to prog to rock. Probably also because of frequent lineup changes. They have a lot of great though under appreciated songs. They are still around today.

David Cousins is the lower voiced singer, amd acoustic guitar and the main song writer. The 2nd singer is Dave Lambert and lead guiter. Bass and backing vocals, Chas Cronk. Drums for this album were Rod Coombes, and keys were John Hawken, a personal freind, BTW who was the ORIGINAL kyeboardist in Renaissance before John Tout. Also Rick Wakeman was in this band before YES, They started as an English folk band.

The progression of this song is pure perfection! When I was in high school in the 70s we called this "long haired music" not prog rock. Talented musicians, classically styled music--intellectual and thought provoking. Hands down one of the best songs of the genre.

As then, so now. You can't judge by the numbers. "Hero and Heroine" was one of my favorite albums, and prog heads (then just heads) would know and love it, along with, of course, your "Close to the Edge" and your "Supper's Ready". "Hero and Heroine" would stand up to an album review, but here's the thing: "Hero and Heroin"...y'all, in other words, can listen to the beautiful love duet...the melancholic "Autumn" which flows into cozy, tender "Winter", poetically enough. You can consider it a love song to each other for Valentine's day.
Personally, an autumn never goes by when I don't listen to it at least once. And now we are into the beautiful Winter.
If you listen, know that it starts out kinda weird, but soon becomes something I think you will find quite lovely.
I saw Strawbs a dozen years ago in Charlotte, here. They played an acoustic version. The studio version is best.
High Folk meets Prog. They would have been a great folk band a few years earlier, had not Rick Wakeman joined them, and gave them some new ideas.

Strawbs are one of my favourite English progressive bands from the 1970s (Rick Wakeman was in their lineup for the first couple of years). They have so much HEART in their music, and David Cousin's lyrics are second to none. Their albums Hero and Heroine, Nomadness and From the Witchwood are splendid, and some of my favourites of all time.

Hi guys, thank you so much for giving this Strawbs medley a listen! As a bass player who grew up on prog music in the 70s, The Strawbs are among my all-time favorites. My brother and I won two Strawbs albums (Hero and Heroine and From the Witchwood) in 1975 or 1976 at an auto show of all places. (Don't ask me what the connection was.) But that was our discovery of this band. People who've never heard of them don't know what they're missing!

Just watched your video. I don't know if it was my comment on your Yes- And You and I video that I posted recommending The Strawbs that got you interested in the band. Either way I am happy you decided to check them out. Ghosts is a great start. Hero and Heroine, Bursting at the Seams, Grave New World and From the Witchwood are worth checking out also. My brothers and I have loved The Strawbs as much as we loved, Yes, Genesis, ELP, Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull. So unique with great song writing, musicianship. I met David Cousins and Dave Lambert in person a few times over the years when they came to Buffalo, NY. Had a few drinks with them and they could not have been nicer to me and my friends. They signed my Ghosts, Hero and Heroine, Nomadness, Burning For You, Deep Cuts and Deadlines albums I have on vinyl. Ghosts and Hero and Heroine signed albums are on my wall at home next to my signed Yes and ELP albums. They are in the same league as far as I am concerned.

Hawken might have been first kbrd player in Renaissance, kind of the mk1 version before Tout & Haslam joined. Wakeman was first in Strawbs. The fade in on this song was Hawken overdubbing a cloud of harpsichords, IIRC. When I saw Strawbs in the late 70s Hawken was joined by Robert Kirby on mellotron- Kirby known for his orchestrations on Nick Drake’s albums, and many others. Strawbs early albums were produced by Tony Visconti, who went on to produce David Bowie and a host of other greats. Sometime in the last few years much of this lineup reunited at a progfest in Gettysburg PA and did a credible live version of their ‘Hero & Heroine’ album; it’s available as a CD/DVD set.

That is where the Dave Cousins voice really shines with emotion and melidiesxare sublime. Strawbs, of course, have songs with two people you now know, Rick Wakeman and Sandy Denny. Hi guys, Love The Strawbs. They were probably bigger here in England. They had a number of hit singles in the charts in the 70's ie; "Lay Down", but for the real fans it's was the albums and the album tracks we wanted. Often in 2 or 3 parts with different titles just like this Medley. You never knew what to expect. Their use of the Harpsichord + Synth was brilliant. Their most classic album has to be "Hero and Heroine" and it kicks of with a 3 part - "Autumn ; Heroine's Theme / Summers Sleep / The Winter Long " - The start with Heroine's Theme is just Wow !!!!! - My other favourite album is "Bursting at the Seams" with tracks like "Tears and Pavan" It also has their hit single "Lay Down" on the album. Some excellent albums and music to explore from this group. Happy hunting !

My first watch of your first listen. Anxious to see your reaction when the song goes darker.....and more powerful. Notice the jazz drumming and time changes. Unison guitars and keys. That's the Strawbs. I hope you somehow find the time (ah, time) to go deeper into their catalog. But you have to love prog.....fused with so many other genres, gothic rock, classical, orchestral, etc. Many prog musicians were classically trained on instruments. If you listen to "Hangman and the Papist", be prepared to react. Fair warning. And Ghosts: "It's good to see the sun again".

    COOL!
Thanks for posting this! I've seen them 4 times. Once in 1985 (with Hudson, Ford and Willoughby) at the Chestnut Cabaret in Philly. At the Sellersville Theater in Sellersville, PA in 2004, then the 'Acoustic Strawbs' (Cousins, Lambert & Cronk) at Mayfair in Allentown, PA in 2005 and then again in 2016 at Sellersville Theater again.
This band has connections with Sandy Denny (you just posted a reaction to Fotheringay) connection with Yes (Rick Wakeman was in Strawbs before Yes) and connections with Renaissance with John Hawken as he was the keyboard player before John Tout (pre-Annie Haslam) John Hawken is on this. David Cousins, Dave Lambert, Rod Coombes and Chas Cronk. I saw this line up on this song in 2003 as a reunion 'Electric Strawbs' Tour.
John Hawken is very underrated on keyboards and exemplary on Mellotron. He plays Harpsichord, Organ and Mellotron on this.
I always thought of David Cousins (The Band Leader) as the English version of Bob Dylan....sort of anyway
Nick says... 'Oh, My Lord' 👍'....'Holy Moly' 😊
    Lex says....'Muy Bueno' 👌
David Cousins sings the beginning and ending and Dave Lambert sings the middle part.
Their early to mid 70's catalog is best. Definitely more band oriented than solo showy stuff.
Hero & Heroine album which came out before 'Ghosts' is good too. These two albums are their most progressive. Earlier albums went from Folk to Folk-Prog and then to what you just played. Gotta do 'Autumn' next. Then 'Hero and Heroine' (title track) too.
Love their vocal harmonies, especially the 'Ahhhhhhhhhhssss' (probably combined with Mellotron)
Repeated listening will reveal things you missed previously. Like Nick said....'there was a lot going on'.
Did you see the Ghost on the cover?
Your doggie got Lady barking 🤣 (7 month old Jack Russell)

David Cousins has that middle ages voice that paired so beautifully with Sandy Denny in the formative years. I was exposed to many sides of rock via Montreal's FM stations (CHOM-FM). Strawbs were very popular in the 70's. I've always said, they're a well kept secret. Maybe, we'll let you join our club.

The Strawbs are a little underrated prog / rock band ive seen & met them several times . Their biggest popularity came in the mid to late 70s their albums Hero & heroine ,Ghosts are kind of prog classics Deep cuts is excellent also but they have Many songs & albums . Some recommended songs are Autumn: heroines theme ...etc., Midnight sun, Round & round , Hero & heroine , Grace darling ,Starshine / April wine , Turn me round , Simple visions .

I love watching both of you and your reactions to listening to the music that I've loved forever. I'm 66 and I grew up with all these prog rock bands...my favourite music to this day. It's great to hear both of your opinions, especially with someone who is listening to this great music for the first time. My son is 32 and I got him hooked on all this great music. I'm not sure if you've listened to Hero and Heroine yet, but if you haven't, give it a go. You both will love it. I'm a huge prog rock fan and bands like Genesis, Yes, Strawbs, Camel, Renaissance, King Crimson and especially ELP are all worth a listen. One suggestion I'd like to give both of you, is to have a listen to Renaissance's Turn of the Cards album. I think both of you would really like their music, especially their female vocalist Annie Haslam. Her voice is amazing. Keep this going Nickn Lex. The 2 of you are great to listen to. CHEERS!!!!!!

Dave Cousins wrote the whole song. He sang the 1st and last sections. Dave Lambert sang the middle section and also played the lead guitar. Cousins played acoustic guitar.Chas Cronk played bass. Brilliant song. They released a new album in 2021 called Settlement. All about lockdown, each member of the band recorded their contributions and sent them to Blue Weaver, ex Strawbs and Bee Gees keyboard player , who put the whole thing together. Listen and enjoy. The acoustic version shows just how the song was originally conceived ua-cam.com/video/ymfZDqZHLG4/v-deo.html follow the link for a live acoustic play.

Can you do this every week ? I come to work on Monday morning and find some great music ... 2 weeks ago YES, last week Glashammer and today Strawbs :-) I've known the Strawbs since 1973 when they entered the charts with Part of the Union. Rick Wakeman was in the band before he joined YES. The throaty voice of the singer reminded me partly of Peter Gabriel, I once could tease a friend, big Genesis fan of the PG phase, by playing Strawbs to him: he said, I know the band, but not the song :-)
The title track of the 1974 album Hero and Heroine - my personal favourite with an epic keyboard riff - was a #1 song in the single charts of my local radio station, for all, who have become curious to hear more Strawbs, it is a must ... I usually use "must" only once per month, so this is my "February-must" :-) ... and I'm glad about each single posivite reaction ... Progheads ... do it :-)

For those who don’t know about Strawbs. Rick Wakemans first band was this one. Sandy Denny was also a member, while not for a long time.
This band had many phenomenal Albums. Bursting at the Seams, From the Witchwood, Grave New World (my personal favourite), Hero and Heroine, and this great album. They have had many other good albums that are as enjoyable to me, while not as popular. My enjoyment of your group is that you review so many different genres of music which is so appealing to me. Old musical souls such as you guarantee some of these forgotten bands will be reintroduced to a much younger generation. Keep up the great program. I am almost 70 years old and I truly appreciate your take on a lot of the music I enjoy.

There is so much great Strawbs music out there. You two have only scratched the surface of the genere of great progressive rock music. There is so much out there. Keep on exploring great music. By the way, on the album cover, 1 side shows the woman and the little boy together, the other side shows the woman without the little boy besides her, (hence the meaning behind the album's "Ghosts" title).

The Strawbs were right up there with Pink Floyd, Yes, Genesis and Renaissance in the 70s. I saw them all live many times and they were awesome. they have a huge discography starting off as a folk bank and evolving into folk rock with a proggy feel to it at times. Thank you.

From "Just a collection of Antiques & Curios" is a Bravura performance by Rick Wakeman (before he left to join Yes) called "A Termperament of Mind" from 1970.
The Strawbs started as a folk oriented group "The Strawberry Hill Boys" (Like Fairport Convention - actually featuring Ssndy Denny before she left to join that group.) and later went more electric.
The Ghosts album was after a major reforming of the band following the departure of their rhythm section Richard Hudson & John Ford (Drums & Bass respectively) who would form the band "Hudson Ford".

Certainly overlooked, underrated. They played smaller halls, had a few minor hits in the UK, never really broke in the US. They come from folk (collaborated with Sandy Denny, who later joined Fairport Convention and Fotheringay), but started playing with prog elements as soon as the 70's arrived (with Rick Wakeman in tow for a while). Their two best albums are with this line-up, the other one being their (near) masterpiece: Hero & Heroine.

When the intro bleeds into the second stanza, thats just wild.
