I don’t know how this song doesn’t emotionally level anyone. One of the most simple, beautifully minimal, to the point pieces of art ever conceived. The way he holds one note over the changing chords of the verse, flat, and unaffected. Even as a kid in the 90’s, this was my favorite. So good it’s a little frightening.
Seeing him realize at 1:06 that this isn't a Kurt 'bop' ( understandable. most of Nevermind are toe-tappers ) is worth the price of admission and then some. Great reaction
He actually most likely never lived under a bridge. Lots of people who knew him well said they don’t know anything about him ever living under a bridge, and there’s no mention of it in the journals of his that were published (reportedly - I’ve chosen not to read them). He fabricated a lot of things - including his image, most significantly. It’s all but totally certain that he never lived under a bridge.
@@portlandgoose4727he definitely was there often because what you seem to be referencing to said he never slept under it, but not much else seems to go against the belief.
Kurt was homeless after his Mother told him to get a job or go to College when High school was ending. Underneath the bridge was a hang out in his town, and he may of slept there. Kurt had also said that after his parents divorce (which was very upsetting) led him to be shifted around family members because he became difficult.
Because you asked... Fish ARE sentient Sentience means having the capacity to have feelings. This requires a level of awareness and cognitive ability. There is evidence for sophisticated cognitive concepts and for both positive and negative feelings in a wide range of nonhuman animals.
not many people get the lyrics but I always felt like Kurt was expressing what you said as well, that he felt like we was just in the way and a burden, which makes sense considering his upbringing and family's divorce and being kicked out of his mother's house at 17, which is coincidentally when he would hangout under a bridge in aberdeen often and was sleeping on friends' couches and porches and things and didn't have an actual home for about a year. he even talked about how he would sleep in the waiting room of the hospital he was born in because no one would bother you there as they assumed you were there waiting on bad news. really sad story
This song has always broken my heart somehow. One of my faves by Nirvana. This and Polly. Adore the darkness- it's palpable. There's definitely 'Something In the Way' Kurt Cobain could emote with his voice. Gives me a visceral reaction. Great memories... Good Times. God I miss the 90's. Kurt was kicked out of the house by his mom a few times when he was young, couch surfed at friends houses. But he did feel like a burden at times- his song 'About A Girl' is about just that. He had a tough childhood. Glad you did this one @Sceez. Thanks 😏🤘
Really insightful comment on the possible meanings behind this song. His parents divorced when he was young and that event coincides with the beginning of his emotional struggles. Not sure if you were already aware of that or not.
New York Times: "Cobain claimed that he lived under the bridge for a time, and while most who knew him don’t think he did, it was clearly one of his preferred hangouts." Naturally, I cannot know but it is possible that the fish reference is somehow related to his astrological sign - Pisces. The sign seemed to resonate with him (referring to it in Heart Shaped Box and even in his suicide note).
Looking under fridge Old fish has sprung a leak And I had some of it late Last night, it made me sick And I almost cannot see Puke bouncing out of ceiling Never eat bad fish When your landlord don't have any feelings Something in the way Mmmm mmmm Something not okay Mmmmmm
he hung out underneath a bridge as a teenager and "something in the way" was spray painted under the bridge where he would hang out 👍👍
Yup
That's also apparently the place he stayed after he got kicked out of his house

Man…this song is so good. I always have to close my eyes when I listen to it.
I just want to go back in time and hug him… his death hurts me as a mom…and a daughter. Idk wha5 I’d do without my dad,

Song is so sad. The sound of somebody who doesn’t want to be alive.
This is loosely based off the time he was basically living homeless under a bridge in Aberdeen, WA before he obviously became known
Yeap

Yes he did.
Kurt's sister lived under the bridge he's singing about

Extra tune on my cassette. Epic
Yeah he was homeless for a bit when he was like 20-21
Looking under fridge
Old fish has sprung a leak
And I had some of it late
Last night, it made me sick
And I almost cannot see
Puke bouncing out of ceiling
Never eat bad fish
When your landlord don't have any feelings
Something in the way
Mmmm mmmm
Something not okay
Mmmmmm
