Disclaimer: DO NOT USE IN ROCK CLIMBING. We use a figure 8 knot for a reason bowline has way less redundancy dont find yourself getting hurt over a misunderstanding. :)
Bowline with a backup is acceptable in rock climbing, but not recommend because it's more difficult to inspect. It's easier to untie after a big fall. Some people like Adan Ondra use a bowline to tie in.
@@eikuz There are multiple deaths every year from people using bowline. While a person who has dedicated their whole life to climbing may be able to tie the perfect knot after millions of times it is DEFINITELY not advised to use and there is a BETTER, SAFER alternative. Bowline is not completely useless, however, tying bags and extra equipment on bowline is my go to during multi-pitches. Like yes you "could" drive a motorcycle for the rest of your life but the risk of you dying is way higher than driving a car.
Thats not true at all. Its actually pretty common in a lot of places to use a bowline or bowline follow-through instead of a fugure eight. The best climber in the world (Adam Ondra) ties into his harness with a standard bowline with a double fisherman on the tail end.
@@ButterBallTheOpossum Read my previous comment. Just because you can doesnt mean you should. Its ultimately the climbers choice but almost no climber who truly understands risk would recommend a newbie to start with bowline it doesnt matter if its more popular in some places. Bowline can be extremely dangerous if tied incorrect and is easily tied incorrectly. There is a much better visual indicator in a figure 8 knot and the figure 8 has more redundancy if tied wrong (like 99 percent of the time a wrongly tied figure 8 would hold you)
I don't know the knots name in english. In my language it would be called the dragon loop, and altough it is not safe to use as a knot to tie to the harness in it's basic form, it can be slightly adjusted with one step turning it into what would be called "The Yosemit dragon loop", which is not only copletely safe for climbing, but also easier to untie when overtightened and easier to tie using one hand only.
"Know the bowline for what it is: An instrument of death," Rock and Ice's Duane Raleigh wrote in a blog post after the release of this year's Accidents in North American Mountaineering in September. "Almost every year someone dies because their bowline either came untied because the complicated knot was tied wrong, or because the bowline magically untied itself."
@@marktime. i got taught 'make a man, tie a noose, poke him in the eye's and then later got taught a much faster way that also allowed for an easier untie after loading the knot
@@Ropius777yeah "twist overhand toward yourself" is very difficult for those people who don't know the words "hand" and simple up and self-relative location terms. Meanwhile this video has me struggling to try to tie this knot consistently without having it wrapped around something. Like how do you just make a bowline loop to start hooking it on something?
I use ribbon and I do it it on the thing that holds ur shower curtain but I stopped since it never worked (I tried it on there 640 times by now) so I'm just trying a different area
You can turn the loop either way and it will be just as strong. Turning it the other way will produce a cowboy knot with the tag end on the outside instead if the inside of the loop.
For all the climbers here saying it's not safe for climbing, you're right. But there is a version called Yosemite bowline which is completely safe to use and in manny ways better than the figure-eight knot, since it can be easily tied with one hand, can be adjusted quickly and is easier to untie when overtightened. (After a fall for example)
With this knot you have to be careful that the short end is not in the loop but outside the loop. Otherwise it could open the knot on the body that will later be inside the loop.
I once met this guy at Scout camp that could tie a bowling around his waist extremely fast. I also knew how to do this, so obviously we had a four-of-seven showdown at the end of that week. Good times.
As a sea cadet,I believe that the most useful knot is the round turn two half hitches (RTTHH),it can secure most things, and the things an RTTHH CANT be used for, such as irregular shapes, the timber hitch can be used for
It also holds tight not under tension (in sailing it is also not always under tension) It doesn't hold when multiple things tied in the same loop (upper and lower part of a climbing harness for example) pull in different directions (if the climber streches or the loop gets caught on a rock)
The knot works very well in sailing as it tightens itself while under tension and is only able to come undone when relieved of that tension increasing safety
The bowline is a knot that we often use in maritime shipping. And please don't use it to pull a calf from a cow, use a cow hitch or something. A wet (amniotic fluid) bowline comes loose
There is an easier way to tie it. Make a slip knot, run the working end back through the loop and pull so that the slip knot rolls over the working end.
Easier way. Make your loop Push a bite of the long end through the loop Pass the working end through the bite Pull the long end down and the working end along with the big loop up Bowline
The way I know it from it is called ratownicze in polish also known as the rescue knot, it is used when someone goes overboard, you throw a line out to them, they tie the bowling knot around their waist, and you pull them back to the boat
Not quite so, the loose end in this short comes out on the wrong side; should be on the outer side. And eh, this may be used in climbing, but the 8-knot is easier to buddy-check, so preferred.
The bowline knot is ok, if you can keep the tension on working line. If you attaching yourself to something with bowline knot and getting into a trouble, (you need rescue) the rescurer will possibly attaching himself to your knot with no hesitation. The knot tension will changing and it's opening up and you and might the rescuerer too will fall into the deep! Use this knot wisely!😐
You do it sooo difficult Simply put the left end over the right end and under then the now right end over the left end and under pull tight and ta da the same knot.

I pretty sure he ment climbing over things or pulling something up idk
But yeah don't use it in rock climbing

😂
Your lucky my house is on fire right now from this knot
Instructions unclear, I cannot knot
same
Rabbit comes out of the hole, runs around the tree, then back into the hole...
Don't use this in rock climbing. Please don't recommend Rock climbing knots if you don't know what you're talking about.
Double figure 8 knot is much better
nice to see that so many others also took notice of that…

What about the X knot you won't die trust me
As a college student in debt with a super depressing life, I find this knot very useful thank u😌😌😌
Ya good bro? I also has the same plan
lmfao
this one doesn't slip, see two half hitches
Bro need rope insurance
Lmao, same but like 10th grade ig?

That is why almost nobody will teach you this knot.
You use a 8 figure for climbing
never underestimate the mind of a bowline
In what world is "pretend you're turning a car off" easier than saying "twist"
Well if you twist the wrong way the knot will fail.
the way we teach figure 8 on a bight is:
make an alien head, choke it, stab it through the eye
RIP to the Gen Zs who only know keyless go cars

Perfect for sailing! It rarely comes loose, the more you pull the tighter it becomes but if you push the bottom part it can be undone in seconds
Thanks this knot finally fixed those suicidal tendencies
I’m a Eagle Scout and the one handed bolin is a great knot to use to play tug of war after tying people together using it
Thank you man you're a lifesaver
God bless you all and your families 🙏🏽✝️🛐🛐
I learned this knot during cub scouts. Best use of my time ever.
I needed to learn this for saving people on waters
This really helps with my attempt tysm

Finally actually good lifehacks perfect 10/10 ❤❤❤
I think the instruction would be clearer if there are no quick cuts during the demonstration
As someone who lives on a boat. Yes this knot is very well used.
You forgot to mention the reason why so many people use it. You can load it up and super easy to untie
knot too hard, thanks
😂😭
Man forgot the most simple answer:
*Tying your shoelaces*
With this knot you have to be careful that the short end is not in the loop but outside the loop. Otherwise it could open the knot on the body that will later be inside the loop.
I prefer the Somerville Bowline 😏 iykyk

The perfect necklace
Bowline is the easiest and most useful knot ever in my opinion
As a scout your goood in under a minute
As a sea cadet,I believe that the most useful knot is the round turn two half hitches (RTTHH),it can secure most things, and the things an RTTHH CANT be used for, such as irregular shapes, the timber hitch can be used for
Try a running bowline. Very useful as well. I use one everyday as a tree worker.
Figure 8 is better when safety is paramount. Bowline knot is better when you expect tons of forces and want to untie or easy
Zeppelin knot is great because no matter how hard you pull it, it won't bind or break.
Since I’m a Boy Scout, I know that there’s an easier way to tie it. I have a Merritt Badge for knots.
NOT FOR CLIMBING!
please, fix the video. Never use this knot for climbing. It only holds tight under tension. People died because of using this
It also holds tight not under tension (in sailing it is also not always under tension)
It doesn't hold when multiple things tied in the same loop (upper and lower part of a climbing harness for example) pull in different directions (if the climber streches or the loop gets caught on a rock)

hey I can tie those behind my back! thank you shop teacher

Make sure that the short end is outside of the loop. But besides that, good knot.
Most useful knot
Let's learn how to tie a noose, it's practical for every use
This is an essential knot for rigging. Ot took me way too long to learn it. Dont use it for rock climbing
The bowline is still used in climbing. Just in some specific ways. Not like tying in your harness, not anymore at least. That was old school yk.
@@unnamedbhopper ah I saw a bunch of people saying don't use it for rock climbing so I added that bit to mine
Instructions unclear. Now the knot is in my neck
There is an easier way to tie it. Make a slip knot, run the working end back through the loop and pull so that the slip knot rolls over the working end.
The Bear Essentials ties it the best. 😎
As a scout, very handy one indeed
Likewise
I literally subscribed to be cool during the apocalypse
I love videos like this but the problem is I can never remember them 😅
How big is the hole? What can fit through it? A head or not?
You can ofcourse make it larger and then you unlock the secret feature which is very useful for public executions🎉
Easier way.
Make your loop
Push a bite of the long end through the loop
Pass the working end through the bite
Pull the long end down and the working end along with the big loop up
Bowline
The way I know it from it is called ratownicze in polish also known as the rescue knot, it is used when someone goes overboard, you throw a line out to them, they tie the bowling knot around their waist, and you pull them back to the boat
Yes, many uses: like the human piñata
Not quite so, the loose end in this short comes out on the wrong side; should be on the outer side. And eh, this may be used in climbing, but the 8-knot is easier to buddy-check, so preferred.
Me being a rock climber and using the impossible to untie figure 8 knot:
Not for climbing. Use the figure 8 knot for climbing it is much safer and can take more load on it.
❤️❤️❤️
Don't let that African-American fellow with the lightning and the thunder get you down
There are also like a thousand variations of the bowline
Very important for depressed peeps.
To learn it faster follow the rabbit and the tree method. There is a nice video by an old man explaining it 😊
I use this knot in rock climbing all the time and i never...uh, oh no, AWWWWWWWWWWWW!
splat.
As a boy scout, I’m gonna forget this in 0.000000001 seconds.
of course it's useful for Kota student
I learned it in scouts, but only around my waist for rescue scenarios. I actually couldn’t have tied one outside of that specific situation 😂
This is better for water rescue instead of rock clilmbing. Pretty sure the rock climbing one is called an 8 figure knot
As a boy scout…… I will forget this immediately
Left handed bowline is better.
I wonder how many depressed kids tried this
I use this knot every day for work
I’m a scout and I also have about 0 rope skills😂
Remember the German or false bowline, it looks almost the same but will collapse under load.
DO NOT USE A BOWLINE FOR ROCK CLIMBING use a figure of 8.
I have to do this for Cadets 👍
HEY...HEY HEY! YOU CHOPPED UP THE ACTION. DON'T DO THAT
I was a scout and my rope skills are meh. I'm really good at tying a few knots but that's it
Taught line hitch is better
Instructions unclear I've tied my neck
You can also use it as a noose.
I thought this was going to go in a different direction
You do it sooo difficult
Simply put the left end over the right end and under then the now right end over the left end and under pull tight and ta da the same knot.
hmm, i did knot know this one 🤔
In Sweden it’s called pålstek
Don't use in rock climbing you use figure of eight or double figure of eight for a reason
Don't recommend things if you don't know for sure
Lol i made this as a kid and thought I invented a new good knot. After a few years I found out that someone had already made it and then I was sad
I know how to do the one handed bowline and it is fun cause you can tie yourself to other people 😂😅
Its an palstek
*Don’t use in rock climbing.* use a figured 8 knot. This is not a safe knit for climbing.
Yeah... Much easier if you use a long rope and tie it around yourself
I can’t even do step one man
Learn how to throw a string into a bowline
can you repeat the instructions, i was distracted
Wait isn't this pronounced bow-line like a bow and a line or have I been saying this wrong for years?
Omfg. Made it way too difficult.
I learned by seeing a rabbit coming up out of a hole, going around a tree and going back in the hole
Me: who never goes outside
