It would be super useful to have short videos like these for every knot. By the way, nice channel, keep it up
Thanks!! I’m on it!

@@TheBearEssentials I got here from the short one, needed to be able to save this in my survival/camping playlist until I can practice it, maybe draw it
@@recoveringsoul755 Visualize it - it's sooo easy, that I bet, a few doing it in your head, will make it stay in your mind for ever.
Only if/when they allow for the rest of us to be able to save those!
Is there an advantage using this rather than an overhand loop?
What’s really amazing is how the wires on my earbuds and other devices are able to somehow do this knot and many others all on their own when nobody is watching.
Lol!! So true!!
I have no idea if i'll ever need it, but this feels like the kinda thing everyone should know
I agree
Nice job. Besides how to tie, you give practical applications as well and don't make the video too long. New subscriber.
Awesome, thanks for the feedback! Happy to have you sub :)
@@TheBearEssentials • I totally agree with Wood Stream. Not only did you provide very clear instructions on how to tie this knot along with an easy way to remember how to tie it, but you also gave us newbies real world examples of how to use it. Thank you. Good job! 👍
Me too!
Right same!! Earned my sub!
@@TheBearEssentials same! Keep it short and to the point! 👍🏻👍🏻🙏
The tip about using the knot to easily retrieve a line secured to a high limb is HUGE. THANK YOU!!
You’re very welcome!
I got 50 seconds into the video, ran downstairs, grabbed some line, and tied it correctly on the first go. Great mnemonic!
Hi Angela🥰🥰
That's a nice knot! 32 years ago, I got "The Klutz Book of Knots" for Christmas. The book has all the best knots. I've never needed to tie a knot, ever
Oh no way I need to check that out
Knotting
I'm an Eagle Scout and love knots...how have I missed this my whole life!?! Thank you! Great simple presentation too, well done.
Means a lot coming from an eagle scout. Thank you!
@@TheBearEssentials I'm really surprised I've never even heard of this knot, this should be in included in fundamental knots, it is astoundingly useful. The ability to tie it mid-line without the need for a running end really elevates the functionality. It doesn't bind so can be removed easily, cannot come undone, heck, that demo with the frayed end even allows for the option of joining 2 completely separate lines. There are so many application....
Shhh, keep that quiet bro! Otherwise the BSA might come for your Eagle Scout rank 😂 I kid of course, congrats on a great accomplishment 👍👍
Damn this knot is unreal. Definitely gonna use this next time I'm out. Also, that Axe Mask is 🔥👌
I very much appreciate that you start with what the knot is good for, and then even add more uses, rather than just showing how to tie it.
Hey! Thanks so much for the feedback.
I’ll do more of this in that case. Much appreciated 👊
@@TheBearEssentials You're welcome. There are too many UA-camrs who just have shorts saying "here's how to tie an ipslnq knot". Then maybe when asked in the comments, they'll say what it's good for.
Absolutely agree. So much more valuable than just "this knot is great" "this other knot is also great" "that one is amazing"
Thanks. Short and precise presentation and no 9 minute intro about the Indonesian kid planting coconut trees so that one day the coconut husk will be spun into a rope
Lmao! Glad it was helpful!
I absolutely love that application of the knot for climbing a tree, as you mention at the end! Such a useful knot! Thanks so much for such a clear and simple way of tying this knot! It was literally EXACTLY what I need for a Paracord bracelet and necklace I wanted to make with the option of adding charms to it as gifts! Thank you! So awesome!
Oh that’s a great application, for bracelets, I never thought of that. Thx for sharing!! And Farhan, thx for the kind words my friend!
I have never seen the Alpine butterfly used for rope retrieval.
That's REALLY useful.
Amazing! Glad you learned something here! Thx
Man you hit it out of the ball park, again. Been using the ABL forever but didn't think about using it in this fashion - just like the figure 8 jam knot you offer refinement for these knots and the ideas behind them. Every time I learn a new application for an old (or new) knot I'm gaining a new tool. Most people don't realize that instead of going out and buying a gadget, they can add some knowledge and 1)always have that "gadget" whenever they have proper cordage and 2)save money, of course. Really appreciate your content and great cinematography (going 24/48 fps is the way to do it). Why I'm subbed and notified.
Man Thank you so much for this!! Honestly it means the world to help people who are just learning but to help someone with a keen eye for this stuff like yourself - well that's just amazing for me.
I couldn't agree more with knowledge. over gadgets too!
Thx for all the kind words man!
Your friend, DJ
An old guy CAN learn a new trick - er, knot. Brilliant! Thanks.
Finally, a knot I cared to learn.
Sweet! I’m glad!
I've used this knot for years. It is one of my favorite knots for mid line attachments. When super loaded, it cannot be broken. I used it on a 4:1 ratio with a 6,000 lb. tractor pulling. Even a strong marlin spike could not break the knot.
Yep. The one I've been hoisting my dinghy on for several years isn't coming undone ever.
The tree trick was great, a logical problem I've never solved that simply. I have to say, since learning the alpine butterfly knot it's become one of my most used knots.
Mine too!
That's a rad knot and I'm glad I watched this video, my man. Thank you!!
Thank you so much for this. Extremely useful.
You’re very welcome!!
You have the gift of teaching. You break it down into small steps, describe what you're about to do and execute it calmly so anyone can follow it. Bravo!
I agree with this commenter. You have the real gifts of clarity and simplicity in your teaching. I’m a new and avid subscriber. Thanks for what you’re doing.
Wow thank you both so much for saying this. I’m really happy it’s helping people!!
@@TheBearEssentials it really is helping! I never knew I needed to know how to tie this knot, but thanks to you now I do. I'm glad I found this video and I hope your channel grows everyday, cheers!
@@rivaldobox honestly you made my day reading this. Thank you 👊👊
@@bobsherwin19735
Thank you for this. Great knot. Thank you for the free knowledge and tutorial too. I’ve learned 15 knots well in a month and before that, I only knew the surgeons knot.
You are so welcome! Thanks for the great feedback, ill continue with it
This one's new to me, too... sharing your videos with whole family - please keep it up!
This knot is indeed the queen of all knots. So useful! Thanks for sharing! Another good use for it is to create a series of loops in order to secure luggage on a backpack, in a trailer or on a sled. Il allows you to create an actual square mesh (kind of like a net, ##) instead of crossing lines diagonally (XX), which might slip more easily.
Genius!
@@TheBearEssentials another great video idea is to see which knots people are most interested in and make further explainer videos for every situation where a given knot would come in handy :)
Im just starting to learn knots, something I've always wanted to know. Gotta tell you, this format is GREAT. Keep them coming, please!
Thanks, this will replace the truckers hitch I've been using for decades. Very ingenious. 👍
Mmmmm..................the KING of knots is SLIPKNOT!!!!
Super useful for bushcraft and camping. Very simple and elegant knot.
Thx!!
Really great abrasion resistance and though I've never put the Big Game line ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxQ4x31pJVpClzhxzNFeILZYTW7Xbs7ZIF (any poundage) through an official test it always seems to break well above rated poundage. This line stretches a very good amount before it breaks and does well in saltwater too. Not the best line for a spinning reel in my opinion, especially if you're planning on using it for lures only due to it having a bit of memory but still a great line whether filling a spool, using as top shot or strictly for leader line. I've bought a bunch of Big game line in the past and plan on continuing to do so in the future.
Excellent instruction and pace.
Thx so much Shawn! Will continue more like this
i have learned a new knot that i will use for so many things the possibilities of stuff you can make with this knot is insane thanks for teaching my this knot
Yes, a great knot for many uses! On outdoor courses, we sometimes used a series of Alpine butterfly knots to construct a rope ladder. However, I hadn't thought of it for securing a loop on a branch - that is clever! Cheers & thanks.
OMG! You just changed my everything. Retrieving from a high branch, I've been asking myself how to achieve that since I was a child. I feel like a total fool. And I'd seen this knot, loved it but didn't learn it. Now I get. Thank you.
No way you’re not a fool, just a different perspective sometimes helps!
What a lightbulb moment, eh?
Handy dandy knot for sure. Great video and excellent explanation/demonstration. Many thanks.
My pleasure I’m glad you got something from it
That was an excellent example of a knot, and how to use it practically. Thank you!
Very GOOD. Since my boy scout days in the 60's I've been an avid fan of simple yet effective knots. I'm surprised it's taken this many years for me to see this one. It's definitely going WAY up on my list as an often used knot when I'm out in my back-country mode. Many thanks... you have a great channel sir.
Very well done video. Not wasting time. Straight to the point and showing how it works. Cheers!
Thank you so much for the extra uses: Isolating frays & access to the lasso. Adding midline handles to hang thing or grab handles.
Short, concise, informative.
Great vid!
Thank you!!
I admire the way he explains how to tie knots! 💯🥇
Ah thank you so much!
Excellent video. Great ideas and best way to tie this knot. Thanks.
Thanks a bunch!
The most simplest explanation to fashion this knot Ive seen so far.
My all time favorite knot!
Tied it on first attempt. What a great method!! Very good presentation.
Thanks so much!!
Radical. This was sublimely beautiful to watch and understand. It's pretty much an esoteric experience. 😂 Hard to describe but I was deeply fascinated by the ultra-genius practicality and usefulness of this knot. It's almost as if this is somehow following some sort of divine geometry. Thank you.
Wow, thank you for this comment!!!
Smooth, calm description, useful hints, well done.
A great knot. Useful in all sorts of places (sailor, bush-walker, firefighter)
wow i love this knot. i feel it could be life saving🙂
Excellent! Well climbers do use this.
That's top class, thanks for sharing your knowledge.
My pleasure, thanks for watching and writing! Im glad it helped.
This knot came out of nowhere!
I did knot see this knot knoming!
My favorite knot! She is indeed the queen.
Really, really appreciate that you offer multiple uses. Way too many "experts" don't even explain 1.
So after you see their demo of "How", your left asking yourself WHY BOTHER ?
Thank you very much, that’s what I found too
Thank you, thank you, thank you! I have been trying to learn to tie this knot forever, you made it so simple to do. Hoprfully all the scoutmasters out their see this to show their kids, you're a very good teacher!
Thanks so much Bernie!! I really appreciate the kind words here
Really great loop for a trucker's hitch as well. I'll be using this from now on.
I just grabbed some white line and did everything you ssid. It is easy to make, use and disassemble. And yes, it does have many uses. Thanks!
The working mans knot

Saving this to my top 5 list. Great tutorial , my man!
Oh wow! Thx man!!
just found out about making UA-cam lists from you. Thanks! This vid is the first entry.
Love that you include a bunch of very practical uses. Thanks brotha
Absolutely brotha, I’ll try to do the same for future vids !
My new favourite knot!!! Thank you!
Very excited to try out this technique during the many outdoor activities that I am definitely planning to never do!
Amazing! Glad you’re going to try it out
Maybe theres an app?
Amazing video. Clear information. Great audio and visuals. No nonsense or like and subscribe requests. Just a great video. Thankyou.
Wow thanks for that feedback!!
Thanks Bear. What a wonderful diverse knot. Could use it as a makeshift washing line too 😉
Great idea!! Thanks for commenting here, welcome to the community!
Crisp. Clean. Useful. No-nonsense video.
Damn handy….. very clear and simple… I like that, thanks
Thanks!!! It is super handy isn’t it
This is the loop knot I've been wanting all my life! Thanks for this great tutorial!
New subscriber!
Thx Michael! Glad it helped
Considering the way it looks though it should be called the king of knots 😉
Hahahahah
Oh she gone love this
Thank you so much. We have bird feeders hanging from branches about 20 feet off the ground. We raise and lower daily, and getting "hung up" in the branches is common. This knot will be a life saver. I've liked and subbed.
Lol!! I use this for the exact same thing!!!! That’s amazing
Dude, this is an AWESOME video! Not too long, not too short. It's easy to understand, Incredibly useful and informative. You just got yourself a new subscriber!
Eyy thanks so much!!!!
Using gloves or handling a vertical line you should use the snap method: With the right palm facing upward, bring the working end up forming a bight alongside the standing end. With your left hand, grab the left side of the bight and flip it to the left forming an "X" while taking the bight with your right hand.
So powerful so simple .thank you
First learned to tie the Butterfly Knot in 1984 and have been using it ever since. Great knot.
Amazing! Longer than I’ve been around 😄
Honestly, if you could make a diagram of the most important knots to know, that would be amazing ❤
That’s a great idea!!
This really is a great loop knot. I tie it by (a) twisting the bight twice (two half twists, i.e. 360 degrees, so it's sort of like there's an infinity sign next to the rope), (b) pulling the bight around the rope so it's behind the two crossing points, and then (c) reaching through the space between the crossing points and pulling the bight towards me.
RagingGeekazoid The Fastest and Easiest is the Snap Method, and can be done in the dark: Using gloves or handling a vertical line - With the right palm facing upward, bring the working end up forming a bight alongside the standing end. With your left hand (thumb facing down), grab the left side of the bight and flip it to the left forming an "X" while taking the bight with your right hand.
Man. I love this channel. Thanks YT again. This is awesome.
Started using this- awesome for tree work and truckers tension work!!
I have used this knot for years and never thought about it in the last application of retrieving the rope.
On top of it, clear instruction, filming, and editing. I'm wondering where you got your ideas of how to create videos for UA-cam. Was it just watching other channels or a Udemy course, etc.?
Great job and thank you.
Thx so much. Honestly, I just started in June, bought a camera then, and started making vids.
I mainly try to just teach in a visual way and imagine how I personally would like to be taught.
I sit down and script the videos to make sure I’m covering and presenting everything in an easy to understand way.
Then write down the shots I want to get. And then go film, edit, film more if need be and edit again.
It’s a big workflow but Im really wanting to make helpful vids at the end of the day - and the helpful comments are so nice to read!
This knot is a load bearing knot acceptable for use in climbing too, for mid-rope attachment or isolating a damaged section of rope
Perfect
Too clever. I'm fascinated by knots (knot-head) and this Is brilliant.
Thx Sharon!
Brilliant demonstration. Useful explanations and uses for the knot.
Glad it was helpful Charles, man thanks so much for saying this. Very nice of you!
After you watch this video you literally can knot.
A rope walks into a bar. The bartender says “didn’t you read the sign: we don’t serve ropes!?” So the rope curls up, messes up his hair and says “I’m a frayed not”.
LOL this is great
That's knot funny.
Just joking. 👍😊
What a beautiful practical and well done video thank you so much
Thank you so so much!
Beautiful! Thanks!
Your welcome I’m glad it helped!
That tree-branch trick reminded me of something from a Stephen King book. In Book 3 of his "Dark Tower" series, King has his hero (Roland) get down from a high place by rope, and when one of the others comments that they can't get the rope back, the super-competent Roland wordlessly tugs on the rope and it drops to the ground.
I wondered for days how that could be done! And now two decades later, here's the answer. 👍
That last one is genius - learned something new. Thanks.
One thing i like about this channel is it teaches me what knot to use.. so practical 😂 thx 🙏
This was an AWESOME video, thanks so much for posting!
Knot. What was I expecting? Not what I was expecting! Knot good, not bad!
Haha this was great
Simple and brilliant!
Happy I learned this knot
That isolation factor is a real rope saver! Thanks heaps❕
I can think of times I could've used that knot; great video! Tried it, got it right away, stomped it into memory. Thanks!
This knot when used for retrieving after throwing it up into a tree branch is a beautiful creation. Whoever designs knots like this is a true artist. To me it’s genius and as pleasing as music.
This knot is very useful. I’ve used it for years camping, hiking, securing a load on a truck and around the house for general handyman.
Thx for sharing some uses!!
Missing the time, when I was climbing. You bring back memories. I am very grateful to find your channel. Thanks UA-cam algorithm 😂
Neat! I'll certainly be trying this one and learning it.
AWWWWWSOME!! I was looking for years for this very type of knot. Great video!!!
Straight to the point. Nice!
Already knew the knot, but lacked knowlegde about how to use it properly. Thanks, now its getting really useful.
Ah I’m glad this helped!!
