    I travel for work so I'm staying in a hotel. I couldn't get the curtains to totally close so I made a bushcraft zip tie from a length of paracord using a basic slip knot and was able to secure the curtains. I also made a quick deploy ridgeline and got my truckers hitch down pat.
    It really is amazing how often bushcraft applies to real life.

    Do you have a video for newbies that would explain your opinion about cordage, like what kind of cordage you believe is best for each survivor situation, maybe show options, pros and cons of each (for example: Regular 7 strands Paracod, 550 FireCord, Titan Survivor Cord, the different number Bank Lines and its uses, etc.) If it's too much info, maybe you could do a series?

    • @IAmValenwind
      @IAmValenwind 4 роки тому

      so, i love rope. like, i REALLY love rope. put me in the "fetishist and crafter" categories as opposed to the "bushcraft" category, but here's my thoughts.
      i adore mil-spec 550 paracord. i use that on everything. shit takes a beating like you wouldn't believe. i make bullwhips out of them as well. it takes a lot to get it to fail. urban survival, it and duct tape are your best friends. my only con is that i would like it to have more tooth (more able to grip onto itself), but that's personal preference :D
      i have titan survivorcord in my get home bag. at some point after taking it out of the package and admiring it, i realized that that was a really dumb idea: let's say i want to stake down my tarp... well, i cut off 6" strands of paracord, aaaand... well that's 6 inches less of fire cord, snare wire, and fishing line i have access to... and there's another 6 inches... and another, and another... i guess i could use the fire cord after i untie the tarp, but why am i starting a fire if i don't have shelter put up? and why do i want to reduce the strength of the cord for the next time i tie the tarp down? and given the fact that there's a wire in it, i couldn't cut it with the knife i had been carrying until recently (granted, that knife sucked, but it's a good thing i found out *now* and not then, right?)- i can cut it now that i have a leatherman. ...now, if the river decides it really likes my pole, and i have to make a hobo reel, sure, i have 100ft of fishing line... meaning i have destroyed the strength of my cordage, and am now hauling 1,000 feet of loose string and wire in my pack (seven 100' strands of core, one 100' sheath, one 100' wire, one 100' fire cord), in addition to the 100ft of fishing line. same problems for the snare wire (if i want the wire, i'm shortening my paracord that i now have to haul around the little pieces for). in theory, it's a really great item... but the moment you realize how it will be used, there is a ton of waste involved. ...and if you pack light and small like me, you can't afford the space for 1000' of cordage because it's now taking up a LOT more room in your pack. ...now, i don't plan on replacing mine with regular paracord, but suffice it to say i have carabiners hanging off all my zippers now in case i DO need it.

    The "Bowline" is an essential knot for anyone who does outdoors a lot. It is the knot used in rescue and with some time and effort can be learned by anyone. If you're a true outdoorsperson, you should learn to tie it one handed. It's been years since I used knots for rigging and for outdoors activities but the fellow who taught me knots insisted I practice until I could do it one handed, then upped that game to include in the dark. At that time there weren't all the fancy recovery gear and if you were stuck on a ledge all your rescue needed to do was have them drop you a line and you tied a Bowline around yourself so they could pull you up thus saving the rescuer from having to risk coming down. Learning to do it one handed (in case of an injury) and in the dark makes it easier. It also makes the knowledge stay with you even in an emergency.

    The constrictor knot is much more useful than the clove hitch and the timber hitch.
    But I am here to tell you that a knowledge of knots is one of the best survival tools that you can possess. Anything that can convert a simple rope into a dozen different tools is an invaluable survival skill. I really appreciate the information you provide here and I'm a loyal subscriber.

    This plus "Hitches, Lashes and Knots Pt.1 / Pt.2" are perfect viewed (and learned) right after each other! Been watching you for a couple of months now and as soon as you build something I was like "yeah, I can't do that"...and now I'm like "he starts of with a timbers hitch, makes perfect sense, easy peasy" Thank you so much for your videos!

    It's been almost a year since I found your channel . The way you demonstrate the skills .. either knots , knife work , cooking , shelter set ups . Has never been anything less than professional. Keep up the great work, thank you for your service to our country. And may I add a illustrated field guide printed on waterproof material produced by you would be an outstanding addition for your viewers .. so many times guide books are poorly illustrated with crude drawings .. a step by step photo illustrated guide book with your clear instruction would be a great aide to have in anyone's pack

    My wife just declared that if I utter the phrase “improvised marlin spike hitch” aloud while putting up the clothesline in the back yard, I have to sleep on the couch. She gets spring fresh sheets, I get trigger-time with bushcraft paracord..... looks like sofa city sweetheart!
