  • Purchased a 72" Fastback deck for my John Deere 1445. The Fastback deck is a rear discharge deck as compared to the 72" side discharge deck that is currently on my 1445 front mount mower. As with most purchases I make... this one needs work.... and a little more than I bargained for.

I recently acquired a Woods 7144 batwing finish mower for mowing the larger areas around the farm and WOW what an animal of a mower! I'm pulling it with a 3520, it's taking 98% of the HP it has to offer but man is it a fun mower to pull around. One thing I've noticed with the rear discharge is they do have a tendency to throw the clippings and windrow more towards one side of the mower just because of the nature of the blades spinning that direction. Once you get it dialed in you'll be surprised by the ground speed you'll be able to travel as well as the difference in power and usage not throwing all that material to one side!

If you have a welder the spindle shaft is just mild steel. I have a lathe so I typically turn one to fit but if you can find some cold rolled steel of appropriate size you can weld on a new shaft.

Probably gonna mow about like a 3 point rear finish tractor mower. The grass you showed looks like a rear finish I messed with one time. I wasn't happy with the results of it. Hard to beat decks like the one on it now. Good luck on the project !

Good luck with rear discharge, every one I’ve ever ran or been around leaves a bunch of clippings just laying on the top ready for a bay rake and bailer! Not good after cut appearance at all. They just cut once and spit it out the back leaving it on top. Great idea for people who cut frequently enough or for safety reasons around the general public with municipal applications.

Hey mate, have the same deck and are having trouble getting a belt (in Australia). They keep sending a longer single V belt that must fit the regular deck. The fast back needs a double V as the drive pulley runs on the back side of the belt. Any chance you have a part number for the belt or a serial number on your deck (ours is missing the data plate). Great vid, thanks for sharing, I am sure you will love the fastback once its operational.

Hi bud. I’m really keen to hear and see what you think of the rear discharge once you get it dialled in. I’m looking at getting a 62” fast deck but have never run a rear discharge before.

Wonder why these decks are made in Netherlands. More popular over there and they just happen to offer them as an option over here?

I don't know how much a Flex Deck from Deere costs, but a company called Lastec makes one for front mowers. They list the MSRP at $14,500.00. Lastec.com
