The angle thing works great for tearing it appart but that motor and transmission is a lot eaiser to handle in the reassemble with the washer flat. This is no way a critisim. The video was one of the best "Ican fix this videos" on UA-cam.. You saved me a bundle!!! Thank You a thousand times.

As a guy with an old Series 90 Kenmore washer that stopped spinning, I can't tell you how much I appreciate this video-parts 1 and 2. Brilliant. I've been convinced I have to buy new machines, but nothing, and I mean nothing, seems to be built as well as these old machines. Bells and whistles? Sure. But basic, bulletproof functionality is hard to find. If I can get a new clutch and install it myself, and get a few more years out of these mid-90s machines, then I'm gonna be a happy camper. Just used your videos to repair my 18+ year old Kenmore. Thank you! You saved me hundreds if not a thousand dollars!! I repaired it for $20!! New upgraded clutch and coupler. Shaft on motor was a bit rounded. Had a guy at work tach weld to build it up a bit and I ground it to get a nice snug fit on the coupler. I know it’s probably not recommended because of balance issues but to me it’s worth the try. Thank you again!

First, I just want to say thanks for taking the time to create and post such an informative video. Second I would like to give everyone a warning as there may be nothing at all wrong with their washer. I just found out that it is normal for the washer NOT TO SPIN during the first stage of the spin cycle; only the pump is activated. After most of the water is pumped out the motor stops for a couple of seconds then starts up again. You hear a click an then the washer spins and pumps out the rest of the water. I opened my washer one day during the first stage and thought it was broken because only the pump was working. I ended up taking everything apart before finally realizing this so I hope this helps someone.

Bill, I can not thank you enough for these videos. Repair guy quoted me 175 dollars to replace the motor coupling. Took me 3 hours with your youtube video, and the total cost was 24 dollars. Bill, I have watched many appliance repair videos on many repairs. I have to say you have some of the very best informative and visual ones I have seen. The way you make sure to be so complete in your lesson, ex. which way the washer goes on that fell down when pulling the transmission was wonderful. Showing four different versions of the agitator removal screw. I really felt compelled to write this review as when the video was complete, I knew that I had learned good information and in a complete way. I look forward to watching more and would find it a please to speak with you. I have a few questions on a non-profit company I have started that aligns itself around appliances and repair. I was about to throw in the towel and cut our losses with the 15+ year-old Kenmore Elite washer that stopped spinning, then I found Bill Newberry's videos and figured what the heck. So, following his excellent instructions, I ruled out the coupling, which looked OK. Again, I figured the machine was toast. Then I found his two videos (parts 1 & 2) detailing how to locate and check the clutch. Seemed to turn too easily, as he described, so I rolled the dice, ordered a new one ($60 with shipping), and not without some struggle, got it reassembled. And it worked, even with a heavy full load of towels. Newberry's guidance couldn't have been better.
Such a helpful set of videos! After our 2006 Kenmore Elite washer stopped spinning, agitating, spinning, and draining properly, your video gave me the knowledge to replace the lid switch, coupler, clutch banding, and agitator dogs. Our washer now performs brand new. I’ll never get rid of this pair, as parts are super easy to find, the direct drive system is super robust, and the garbage they manufacture now has no chance of lasting as long as this stuff!

I just wanted to thank you for your thorough video. your diagnostic approach helped me figure out that my clutch was bad and I was able to replace it for $40 and save myself some money having to replace and buy a brand new dryer. I truly appreciate you taking the time to do this for people. my favorite part was you showing with your fingers how when you turn the clutch it is bad. Thank you so much for these detailed videos. There are others out there that show how to replace this, but yours really explains what one should look for to know when it needs replacing. I fixed my kenmore washer on my own and also cleaned out the massive amount of gunk buildup on the inner tub. Now it spins like new and no more smell, and saved us a ton of money!

I cannot thank you enough! In the process of checking the clutch I pull the pump off and lo and behold there was a sock hanging out of the pump! Jammed up the whole works! Pulled it out fired it up and running smoothly!!! Thanks Bill!!

After watching your videos I found we had bad dogs on the agitator and a bad motor coupling. $22.00 and an hour of my time, I fixed both problems. Thanks for the great videos and help! BTW, instead of replacing the clutch on my washer, I reconditioned the clutch by sanding the inner drum and clutch pads to de-glaze them, then cleaned them with alcohol and stretched the spring for a little more tension. My washer is to old spend 40-50 bucks on a new clutch when I can buy a used mint washer and dryer set on craigs list for 150. Cheers!
Thanks Bill, just brought home my wife and our firstborn child, a son. The first load of spitup covered ans soiled linens i tried to run, i came downstairs to a drum full of soaking wet clothes. Ran the timer back around to spin... Motor runs, drum tries to spin but doesnt get up to speed. Have to help it to get up to speed by hand. Lol i can see the headline now, "Man found wrapped around washing machine agitator, dead." Found your 11 year old video to confirm my suspicions of what is wrong with my 23 yr old washer. Great video, I have not looked under my washer yet, Its a 22yr old White Westinghouse. I'm hoping its the same style setup. My tub turns but not fast enough to remove the water from the clothes. To me, from what I have been watching, I hope it the coupling. But think it's the clutch. LOL The only mystery on my machine is the agitator and shaft are different from Whirlpool. But I guess I'll figure that out once I'm knee deep into it. UA-cam has been my go-to source for repair info. I have saved hundreds of dollars fixing, motorcycle, car, plumbing, cement work( tuck pointing ) , clothes dryer and now my clothes washer. Thanks to you and all the others doing these videos!
Great how to videos. My washer is about 7 years old. One of my 3 bolts underneath snapped (rusted?) in half and the other two worked themselves loose until they fell out during a wash cycle leaving the whole motor/transmission unit on the floor while running. Washer made a banging noise like an unbalanced load. Lifted the lid and realized the clothes bin was about 3 inches lower than it should be. Tried to drain water out of washer by switching control to Rinse mode but it made a terrible noise. Unplugged everything and moved washer to find two and a half bolts on the floor. Had to drill out the half that stayed in the shaft. This video helped me to take apart and put back together once I had new bolts. Thanks so much! Saved a lot of money and learned a lot in the process!
Bill Thanks for the video. Had to do a repair fast when the Sears technician failed to show up last Friday. Saved me a bunch and bought the parts off Amazon instead of the Sears site. I had to watch the video again when I struggled to re-install the shaft to bolt the motor back up. That little anti-clockwise push trick is quite important to get the motor in flush position for bolting. My wife thanks you.
Bill, My husband and I can't thank you enough for your very thorough video. Our Kenmore 80 series is 13 years old and it stopped spinning the other day, but continued to run and make a weird noise, (much like the washer in another video that you did). We followed your video step by step. First, we checked the motor coupler and while it looked "just okay," we did what you said and really gave it a good look. We also checked the clutch and the dog agitators, just to be sure. We came to the conclusion that the motor coupler was just worn down so we switched it out and voila!! Now, our washer spins again! Thanks, Bill, for sharing your knowledge!!

Great tutorial! I took everything apart and it all looked fine, and when i reassembled it all it started spinning again, so I'm not sure what went wrong initially, but it's working now and it didn't cost a dime!
Bill, thank you I diagnosed & repaired following your step by step instructions. Found motor coupler pieces on floor upon tilting machine ordered part on amazon fixed for $2.96 saved a ton of money thank you Bill. I did remove the cabinet as it was loose and wanted to secure it on properly when doing this there is a water tube in the back make sure that is secured on properly as mine came off accidentally and leaked (my fault). Machine is working like a charm now thank you again BIll
This is the second time you have helped me get my washing machine working again. Both times it was the clutch that slipped and was tilted. The first time I was back and forth to the computer making sure I was doing it right. This second time (this morning) I went over it again with your WONDERFUL videos and got it done with out all the stress and it it took me about a half hour. I will order a new clutch and I want you to know that each time I do laundry I will be thanking you that I saved money doing it myself. A thousand times... thank you.
This and the part 1 companion video is bar none, the absolute best instructional I've ever seen on youtube. My motor coupler was broken in half. The damage couldn't be seen until the motor was off as you said. Your disassembly -reassembly procedure went perfectly. As you said, the job was much easier by removing the drive train and motor then repairing out of the machine. Thank you so much!!!

Thanks for the detailed troubleshooting steps. Spent a lot of time watching repair videos that don’t fully help you diagnose your problem. I initially thought my whole transmission was bad since the clutch passes visual inspection, but the torque test is key. You save me a few hundred bucks and fixing the wrong issue.
Probably the clutch. He is being overly modest about his finger strength. Based on the video, my clutch seemed OK too. Noticed the brake release lever didn't seat properly - it was cracked. That part is only readily available in the clutch kit, so I ordered one. Gave the new clutch the same test for comparison - found it near impossible to move by hand. Replaced both parts - everything works.
Bill, this video saved me at least $200. I had a bad motor coupling, and didn't have a clue on what part needed changing or how to do it. I'll be sure to look back at your other videos for future appliance issues. Thanks!
Thank you for all the input. This job went sooo smooth with your help. If I’d had clutch assembly in hand when dismantling washer I could have been done in 1.5 hrs easy. I took apart on Sunday it went so easy picked up new clutch assembly on Monday and everything went together in 30 min. Thank You

My very mechanical boyfriend said to buy a new washer and gave me the money. I'm a 52 yr. female and fixed it myself (yay should keep money). It was the coupler was rounded out. Put back together and agitator was frozen (crap must not have turn counter clockwise to release brake), took apart again because I thought it was suppose to turn one way but not the other (moved both ways when I started). Put back together, still frozen (suppose to be dah) turned on made noise but no agitating. Spin worked tho. Forgot to turn on water, who knew it wont agitate unless full of water. Works great! Thank you for saving me so much money for now and in the future.
Bill, I don't even want to speak to your editing, which is non-existent, but would rather just simply say you are an excellent teacher. I now understand what is in my Kenmore Series 80 and how to fix it, thanks to you. And I never have done this before. But I feel confident thanks to your great instruction. No but here, just saying, as a video professional, I could reduce your programs to a quarter or less with simple cuts. And closeups of bolts going in is good too. Think food TV.
This saved me a bundle....simple...easy...makes me think about fixing more things around the house I thought were hard to do. Just remember the couplings are made with metal inserts now which supposedly may or may not start to round the edges of the shaft. Supposedly whirlpool fixed it. Thanks against..was ready to just buy a new one since it's 13+ years old! but if I can get a coupling and spend an hour fixing it I'm super happy

Bill, AWWSOME video. I folloewed your instructions and everything you described was spot on! My washer would not spin, agitator worked fine, but no spin cycle. I had to change my coupler a few years ago and had to remove the sheild on the washer. I really like your way of tilting the washer to get at the motor. My clutch was bad only problem I had was getting the retaining clip back on. I changed the coupler again since I already had everything open. Great Job!! Thanks

Thought there must be a trick, continued watching and there it was with the turn of the drum!! Well done and much appreciated. We were almost going to get a new washer as this is 13 years old. Thank you for the help. The clutch was the problem Did a temporary cleaning of the clutch and the pads with degreaser and some 600 grit emery paper. added a washer between the springs and the ring to tighten it up a bit more and reinstalled. It worked like a charm so far. I will use that until I get the new clutch assembly that I have ordered. Thanks for the excellent tutorial.

Videos 1 & 2 were a great help. Just replaced the motor coupler after the washer quit spinning. Coupler shattered on the transmission side. 20 minutes to disassemble. 30 minutes to reassemble. 2 hours of research and troubleshooting on youtube. $25 replacement part in north ATL market.

I just want to thank you soo much last week my washer broke it wouldn't spin but would fill I was about to just buy a new one and watched your video. I took my washer apart and found it had a had a broken coupler. I purchased a new one on eBay for $4 and fixed it today. Thank you soo much 👍👍👍❤️😄
I was about to scrap my washer. After watching your video i was able to find a problem you didn't mention. The tube brakes! Your tub turn counter-clock wise and mine didn't! Somehow the brakes was seized up. I took off the retaining c-clams and took out the brake mechanism. After reinstallment the tub could now turn just like yours did. Now my machine works as it should. No clutch replacement need. My machine wasn't spinning. Thanks a bunch!!!

Great tutorial, my coupler is good when I checked it. So it has to be the clutch that's not spinning the basket when it has a full load, it smells like burnt rubber which made me think electrical wires were burning. Thanks to you I can replace the clutch. Easy peasy. While I'm in there I'll pull the agitator and basket to give it a good clean.

I wish I would have checked mine when it stopped turning almost 2 years ago. It ws 10 years old !! I had the 80 series (loaded) I have a newer one. The newer ones are made like crap!! I miss mine. This is something I can do!! I am a woman! I washed a lot of heavy items. now I know what happened and see how easy it is to repair!! THANK YOU!!

Wife said the power to the laundry room went out while doing a load of towels. Breaker didn't trip but the gfci had to be reset. Power restored but washer won't spin. Tried master reset (unplug, wait, replug, open/close 6x) and nothing. I've been troubleshooting in preparation for return. Something caused the washer to overload mid cycle so I assumed the motor needed reset but that didn't work but motor is making a working noise. If you have any suggestions beyond checking the coupler and clutch I will be humbled and grateful. Either way thank you for taking your time to make these videos. I liked them all.
0:58 NOW is the time to change the Motor to the Transmission coupling. That coupling is a 3 piece coupling consisting of 2 plastic pieces ( one each on the Motor and on the transmission ) with a RUBBER coupling in between those two pieces. This is a phenomenal video. The attention to the VERY IMPORTANT details that might otherwise be overlooked is great.
I am a software engineer. I do not work with tools hardly at all. I was able to watch this video and pull the transmission/motor out and verify I have a bad clutch by moving it very easily with my fingers. In the video, you mentioned you would publish a link to the part number in the video's description, but I don't see one. I will try to search for it on my own, but I would love to get that information here. Thanks.

The way you make sure to be so complete in your lesson, ex. which way the washer goes on that fell down when pulling the transmission was wonderful. Showing four different versions of the agitator removal screw. I really felt compelled to write this review as when the video was complete, I knew that I had learned good information and in a complete way. I look forward to watching more and would find it a please to speak with you. I have a few questions on a non-profit company I have started that aligns itself around appliances and repair. I was about to throw in the towel and cut our losses with the 15+ year-old Kenmore Elite washer that stopped spinning, then I found Bill Newberry's videos and figured what the heck. So, following his excellent instructions, I ruled out the coupling, which looked OK. Again, I figured the machine was toast. Then I found his two videos (parts 1 & 2) detailing how to locate and check the clutch. Seemed to turn too easily, as he described, so I rolled the dice, ordered a new one ($60 with shipping), and not without some struggle, got it reassembled. And it worked, even with a heavy full load of towels. Newberry's guidance couldn't have been better.

Such a helpful set of videos! After our 2006 Kenmore Elite washer stopped spinning, agitating, spinning, and draining properly, your video gave me the knowledge to replace the lid switch, coupler, clutch banding, and agitator dogs. Our washer now performs brand new. I’ll never get rid of this pair, as parts are super easy to find, the direct drive system is super robust, and the garbage they manufacture now has no chance of lasting as long as this stuff!

Thank you so much for these detailed videos. There are others out there that show how to replace this, but yours really explains what one should look for to know when it needs replacing. I fixed my kenmore washer on my own and also cleaned out the massive amount of gunk buildup on the inner tub. Now it spins like new and no more smell, and saved us a ton of money!

Thanks for the great videos and help! BTW, instead of replacing the clutch on my washer, I reconditioned the clutch by sanding the inner drum and clutch pads to de-glaze them, then cleaned them with alcohol and stretched the spring for a little more tension. My washer is to old spend 40-50 bucks on a new clutch when I can buy a used mint washer and dryer set on craigs list for 150. Cheers!

Thanks Bill, just brought home my wife and our firstborn child, a son. The first load of spitup covered ans soiled linens i tried to run, i came downstairs to a drum full of soaking wet clothes. Ran the timer back around to spin... Motor runs, drum tries to spin but doesnt get up to speed. Have to help it to get up to speed by hand. Lol i can see the headline now, "Man found wrapped around washing machine agitator, dead." Found your 11 year old video to confirm my suspicions of what is wrong with my 23 yr old washer. Great video, I have not looked under my washer yet, Its a 22yr old White Westinghouse. I'm hoping its the same style setup. My tub turns but not fast enough to remove the water from the clothes. To me, from what I have been watching, I hope it the coupling. But think it's the clutch. LOL The only mystery on my machine is the agitator and shaft are different from Whirlpool. But I guess I'll figure that out once I'm knee deep into it. UA-cam has been my go-to source for repair info. I have saved hundreds of dollars fixing, motorcycle, car, plumbing, cement work( tuck pointing ) , clothes dryer and now my clothes washer. Thanks to you and all the others doing these videos!
Great how to videos. My washer is about 7 years old. One of my 3 bolts underneath snapped (rusted?) in half and the other two worked themselves loose until they fell out during a wash cycle leaving the whole motor/transmission unit on the floor while running. Washer made a banging noise like an unbalanced load. Lifted the lid and realized the clothes bin was about 3 inches lower than it should be. Tried to drain water out of washer by switching control to Rinse mode but it made a terrible noise. Unplugged everything and moved washer to find two and a half bolts on the floor. Had to drill out the half that stayed in the shaft. This video helped me to take apart and put back together once I had new bolts. Thanks so much! Saved a lot of money and learned a lot in the process!

Bill Thanks for the video. Had to do a repair fast when the Sears technician failed to show up last Friday. Saved me a bunch and bought the parts off Amazon instead of the Sears site. I had to watch the video again when I struggled to re-install the shaft to bolt the motor back up. That little anti-clockwise push trick is quite important to get the motor in flush position for bolting. My wife thanks you.

Bill, My husband and I can't thank you enough for your very thorough video. Our Kenmore 80 series is 13 years old and it stopped spinning the other day, but continued to run and make a weird noise, (much like the washer in another video that you did). We followed your video step by step. First, we checked the motor coupler and while it looked "just okay," we did what you said and really gave it a good look. We also checked the clutch and the dog agitators, just to be sure. We came to the conclusion that the motor coupler was just worn down so we switched it out and voila!! Now, our washer spins again! Great tutorial! I took everything apart and it all looked fine, and when i reassembled it all it started spinning again, so I'm not sure what went wrong initially, but it's working now and it didn't cost a dime!

Found motor coupler pieces on floor upon tilting machine ordered part on amazon fixed for $2.96 saved a ton of money thank you Bill. I did remove the cabinet as it was loose and wanted to secure it on properly when doing this there is a water tube in the back make sure that is secured on properly as mine came off accidentally and leaked (my fault). Machine is working like a charm now thank you again BIll

This is the second time you have helped me get my washing machine working again. Both times it was the clutch that slipped and was tilted. The first time I was back and forth to the computer making sure I was doing it right. This second time (this morning) I went over it again with your WONDERFUL videos and got it done with out all the stress and it it took me about a half hour. This and the part 1 companion video is bar none, the absolute best instructional I've ever seen on youtube. My motor coupler was broken in half. The damage couldn't be seen until the motor was off as you said. Your disassembly -reassembly procedure went perfectly. As you said, the job was much easier by removing the drive train and motor then repairing out of the machine. Thank you so much!!!

Thanks for the detailed troubleshooting steps. Spent a lot of time watching repair videos that don’t fully help you diagnose your problem. I initially thought my whole transmission was bad since the clutch passes visual inspection, but the torque test is key. You save me a few hundred bucks and fixing the wrong issue.

He is being overly modest about his finger strength. Based on the video, my clutch seemed OK too. Noticed the brake release lever didn't seat properly - it was cracked. That part is only readily available in the clutch kit, so I ordered one.
Gave the new clutch the same test for comparison - found it near impossible to move by hand. Replaced both parts - everything works.
Bill, this video saved me at least $200. I had a bad motor coupling, and didn't have a clue on what part needed changing or how to do it. I'll be sure to look back at your other videos for future appliance issues. Thanks!

Thank you for all the input. This job went sooo smooth with your help. If I’d had clutch assembly in hand when dismantling washer I could have been done in 1.5 hrs easy. I took apart on Sunday it went so easy picked up new clutch assembly on Monday and everything went together in 30 min.

My very mechanical boyfriend said to buy a new washer and gave me the money. I'm a 52 yr. female and fixed it myself (yay should keep money). It was the coupler was rounded out. Put back together and agitator was frozen (crap must not have turn counter clockwise to release brake), took apart again because I thought it was suppose to turn one way but not the other (moved both ways when I started). Put back together, still frozen (suppose to be dah) turned on made noise but no agitating. Spin worked tho. Forgot to turn on water, who knew it wont agitate unless full of water. Works great! Thank you for saving me so much money for now and in the future.

Bill, I don't even want to speak to your editing, which is non-existent, but would rather just simply say you are an excellent teacher. I now understand what is in my Kenmore Series 80 and how to fix it, thanks to you. And I never have done this before. But I feel confident thanks to your great instruction. No but here, just saying, as a video professional, I could reduce your programs to a quarter or less with simple cuts. And closeups of bolts going in is good too. Think food TV.
This saved me a bundle....simple...easy...makes me think about fixing more things around the house I thought were hard to do. Just remember the couplings are made with metal inserts now which supposedly may or may not start to round the edges of the shaft. Supposedly whirlpool fixed it. Thanks against..was ready to just buy a new one since it's 13+ years old! but if I can get a coupling and spend an hour fixing it I'm super happy

Bill, AWWSOME video. I folloewed your instructions and everything you described was spot on! My washer would not spin, agitator worked fine, but no spin cycle. I had to change my coupler a few years ago and had to remove the sheild on the washer. I really like your way of tilting the washer to get at the motor. My clutch was bad only problem I had was getting the retaining clip back on. I changed the coupler again since I already had everything open. Great Job!! Thanks

Thank you for the help. The clutch was the problem Did a temporary cleaning of the clutch and the pads with degreaser and some 600 grit emery paper. added a washer between the springs and the ring to tighten it up a bit more and reinstalled. It worked like a charm so far. I will use that until I get the new clutch assembly that I have ordered. Thanks for the excellent tutorial.

Videos 1 & 2 were a great help. Just replaced the motor coupler after the washer quit spinning. Coupler shattered on the transmission side. 20 minutes to disassemble. 30 minutes to reassemble. 2 hours of research and troubleshooting on youtube. $25 replacement part in north ATL market.

I was about to scrap my washer. After watching your video i was able to find a problem you didn't mention. The tube brakes! Your tub turn counter-clock wise and mine didn't! Somehow the brakes was seized up. I took off the retaining c-clams and took out the brake mechanism. After reinstallment the tub could now turn just like yours did. Now my machine works as it should. No clutch replacement need. My machine wasn't spinning. Thanks a bunch!!!

So it has to be the clutch that's not spinning the basket when it has a full load, it smells like burnt rubber which made me think electrical wires were burning.

I wish I would have checked mine when it stopped turning almost 2 years ago. It ws 10 years old !! I had the 80 series (loaded) I have a newer one. The newer ones are made like crap!! I miss mine. @@BillNewberry Thank you for these great videos. Very informative and well produced. I'm away from home and our Kenmore type 111-07 washer won't spin. Wife said the power to the laundry room went out while doing a load of towels. Breaker didn't trip but the gfci had to be reset. Power restored but washer won't spin. Tried master reset (unplug, wait, replug, open/close 6x) and nothing. I've been troubleshooting in preparation for return. Something caused the washer to overload mid cycle so I assumed the motor needed reset but that didn't work but motor is making a working noise. If you have any suggestions beyond checking the coupler and clutch I will be humbled and grateful. Either way thank you for taking your time to make these videos. I liked them all.

0:58 NOW is the time to change the Motor to the Transmission coupling. That coupling is a 3 piece coupling consisting of 2 plastic pieces ( one each on the Motor and on the transmission ) with a RUBBER coupling in between those two pieces. This is a phenomenal video. The attention to the VERY IMPORTANT details that might otherwise be overlooked is great.
I am a software engineer. I do not work with tools hardly at all. I was able to watch this video and pull the transmission/motor out and verify I have a bad clutch by moving it very easily with my fingers. In the video, you mentioned you would publish a link to the part number in the video's description, but I don't see one. I will try to search for it on my own, but I would love to get that information here. Thanks.
