- Eric goes over how to solve some issues you maybe having with the ink bleeding into the grain. You can use Deft or Cabot brand sanding sealer. They both work well.

@Lois. Just wanted to let you know I did an experiment with the sanding sealer. Same board, select pine, 2 signs. On one I put 1 heavy brush coat of deft sanding sealer. The other I put 2 heavy brush coats. When I sanded them of & put my clear on they looked identical. Neither one had any sign of bleeding or shadow from the ink. Jean-Marc knows his stuff. Thank you again Jean-Marc for saving us all time & money. You rock my friend!!!! Eric
Jean-Marc, I tried that example with 2 coats on my 22+22" Harley Davidson engine signs orange and black inset letters with different engines Panhead Shovelhead Knucklehead Big Twin and its made me alot of money here in Austin Tx! I only use your methods and especially on how to use your carving bit and routing plunger technics. You guys are Top Professionals and I always look forward to seeing your past and present videos. God bless you and your Family and staff! 😇🙏💯👍🇺🇲
Thanks Donald! We really appreciate that 👍👍
@Jean-Marc, Thank you for those tips. I'll give them a try for sure. That trick on the brush is a big time saver. I've been cleaning it every time. Thank you again my friend, Eric
Paul, very good question. I should have mentioned this. I really meant to. The cedar fence boards that I use are great. I love carving them, but most of the time they are too thin to laminate. Sometimes down to 1/2". Even if they are thick enough, sometimes they have a slight cup to them which makes it kinda tough. I just find it much simpler to use the pine. I haven't had any issues with the pine not lasting. My hunch is you may get a little more rain over there than I do in AZ. Thank you
@Olivsam, on #30 video I go over all that. Both the Kyrlon & the Helmsman are made for outdoors. I use the Krylon pretty much all the time now. It's less than 1/2 the cost & holds up good. Thank you for the question, Eric
THANK YOU! I burn images onto wood and have been using about a billion coats of Minwax Clear Aerosol Lacquer to coat my pieces, but wanted to cut down on how much I use because I go through cans like mad! didn't know about sanding sealer. thank you for this info! love your work and your presentation. good luck on Shark Tank! please keep the videos coming! going to check out the rest you have made!
+e9s42tv69mo Thank you for the kind words. We very much appreciate them. Glad we could help. Yes our plan is to keep the videos coming. Thank you again, Eric
Had a hard time finding sanding sealer in my area had some Minwax Polyurethane water base left over from another project one thick coat brush cleans up in water works great.
BRILLIANT Bro just what I needed to know. Right lets go make some more signs !!!!
Thankyou, Richard
Glad we could help Richard.
@Lois. My hunch is Jean-Marc is correct. He a flooring expert, he really knows his stuff. The only question is the difference in the sanding sealer product. I'm gonna try 1 heavy coat & see if it works as well. It'll save money & time if it does. One of the cool things about this thing we do is there's so much knowledge that we can all share. I love it.
We don't have that out here in our area. I don't recall that I've ever carved Apsen. If you try it let me know how it works out. Thank you, Eric
I have been putting 2 or 3 coats on my boards too. Wonder if what Jean-Marc Selvon is true, need to find out. It is good info though, specially about the brush. Thanks for the great video!
Eric, you mention that you are using the Krylon, is that just for indoor because you also use the Helmsman Spar Urethane as well is that correct? Thanks!
The best deal I got in prices, is a sanding sealer use for timberflooring, 10 ltrs container. Eric I wanted to give 1 point about the sealer, 1 heavy coat is best, because the second coat will dilute the first coat. The technical guy from Blanchon explained it to me. Now I never clean the brush for the sealer, when the brush is dried, I will put it for 10 mins in the sealer, and the brush become soft. May be your product is different. Thanks for that video
Hello guys I have a question on the gloss finish krylon spray cans have you try using the compressor and spray your signs?
I haven't tried that but maybe in the near future I will. Just hate the idea of the clean up, but I know these days with water based finishes it's easier. I may give it a try. Thank you for the suggestion, Eric
Out of curiosity, why not glue up larger cedar sign boards rather than dropping down to whitewood or pine pre laminated stock? I don't use pine or any whitewood any more in the UK due to it not lasting very long in all weathers mainly due to rain damage.
what do you think about pressure treated lumber such as decking? I have a lot of pieces around that is in unused but dried out condition from a large deck project. Would there be issues with the ink?
Hi John, I don't know about ink issues but the pressure treated lumber I tried it with didn't work cause the treatment went way deep into the board. I couldn't sand it or cut it out. Can't hurt to try it out & see if you can make it work for you. Let us know how it works out, Thanks for watching, Eric
another great tip much appreciated
+Ron Danner You're welcome
what about using boiled linseed oil insted of sanding sealer?
have you ever try it?
thank you!
I've heard good things about it but never tried it myself. Thank you for watching, Eric
In upstate New York there no Cedar pickets at Lowe’s Or Home Depot , ill have to use the regular Cedar boards when I decide to use Cedar
Keep your eyes open, maybe there's something else you can use that would work for you.
Can you apply sanding sealer after carving, if you apply carefully to not get it into the carving itself and on just the surface wood?
Absolutely...
Are you sealing both sides or just the top that gets inked?
+DrRockter5150 both sides and the ends.
You are right about all the info there is to share. I love my youtube friends! I just thought of something, maybe I will read the directions on my can of sealer. lol
Do you stamp your name on the back of your signs? I haven't seen anywhere where you mention it. Also how do you hang your signs? Is that covered anywhere? I watched the amazon video and you only show drilling holes for the hardware, but not actually how to hang it or attach other signs to it. Is there a youtube video showing that?
berighteous Yes we do rubber stamp the back of all our signs. May have covered that somewhere, just can't remember where. I don't think we have specifically how we put the signs together on a video. I'll put that on the list. For now if you look at any of our newer videos that has the signs hanging behind us you can see we put screw eyes in the holes we drilled & connected them together with "S" hooks.
What about if you have painting on top of outset letters that don't get carved?
I'm sorry Nick, I'm not understanding your question. Can you give me more detail? You can email me directly eric@makeawoodsign.com.
What is the brand of ink spray you use
We use anything that says flat primer. Or Marsh spray ink
dad's a good cameraman!
Thank you
How much do you charge for small signs?
I make lot's of different sizes that may be considered small signs. Here's a link to my site that has pictures and prices. davesigns.com/custom_signs.htm Thank you Jack!!!
