    We have tons of the beetle kill pine here in Colorado. Most of the pine trees in Grand County were killed by beetles. I love the stuff and have made coffee tables with it. Rustic signs are next!

    When I use sanding sealer that is the brand I use. I agree I like it a lot, much easier.

    I couldn't find sanding sealer at my local hard ware store so I was told to try poly urethane looks the same the water base works the best. It turns yellow ish but your sanding it off anyway and found it doesn't gum up the belts. I didn't like using the Krilon ether. I've switch back Helmsman Spar Urethane anyways I like it better and a can goes farther. Thanks again maybe a video on all the stuff you've used and what you use now.

    Hi Eric,
    Great video
    was just wondering if this water based sanding sealer is ok for a pine board ( commonly used for shelving) sign that'll be used outside here in the not so sunny and very rainy U.K. thank you

      Yep that should work fine as long as you put a good exterior finish over the top.

    Could I use minwax polycrylic over this sanding sealer???

    • @oldave100
      @oldave100  7 років тому

      I really don't know. By the time I put the finish on the sign the sanding sealer is all gone so I don't worry about it.

    About a year ago I purchased a quart of Minwax Sanding Sealer. I didn't open it until yesterday because I had some older
    Sanding Sealer to finish (5 year old Cabot). I applied the Minwax Sanding Sealer on new Maple Stairs as per directions on the can. I noticed that as the Sanding Sealer was drying it started to darken slightly and create a blotchy finish at the overlapping brush strokes. Hopefully this can be cleaned up with some minor sanding. Today I tried to sand the imperfections but the Sanding Sealer was rubbery and could not be sanded. The sanding caused the finish to roll under the sandpaper while clogging it at the same time. It's going to take me 2 days of stripping to clean the wood and get ready for proper finishing. I will never take another chance with this product again.👎

    Do you use sanding sealer on all your projects or just on certain types of wood, and is necessary to use on redwood, oak, maple etc. thanks.

      I only use sanding sealer on pine. It's the only one of the woods that I use that has a tendency to bleed the black.

    I've been using the beetle kill for a couple of signs and I'm very happy with the results. More importantly there is a certain eye pop factor when the customer sees the finished sign.
    Thanks for the fantastic videos and keep up the good work.

    • @oldave100
      @oldave100  6 років тому

      By the time I spray the enamel the sanding sealer is all sanded of. So yes, no problem.

    Do you ever use sanding sealer and ceder stain on the same pine board? If you do, is the sequence apply sanding sealer first, carve second, apply ink 3rd, sand 4th, apply ceder stain 5th, apply finish last?

    • @oldave100
      @oldave100  8 років тому +2

      +Monte Hines I answered on FB as well but for those that aren't on there here's the sequence
      on the pine. 1) sanding sealer 2) Layout 3) carve 4) spray black 5) Sand off the black 6) Spray cedar
      stain 7) Clear Finish. Hope this helps. Thank you, Eric
