Just did this same thing last year with a 2000 SeaSport 21' Center Console. Boat was built using Greenwood XL so that was a big bonus to alleviate some rot worries. Bought the boat for $3500 with a trailer w/ a blown Johnson 200. So after a repower with a 2021 Yamaha 150, new wiring, new upholstery and repainting I'm in it for about $23000 ($18K of that is the repower).
This winter, I'm pulling the topside apart, fixing gel cracks and repainting it.

My son and I picked up a Wellcraft V20 for 2grand. tI came with a great running Yamaha 150 txrr. It does take more than you think it will in time. I am a Architectural millwork/ trim carpenter person. We had the advantage of using the shop and tools. The keel and transom needed some love. The wiring was easy because we ripped all of the old out and started clean. Gut it/cut it/rework it. We have found that the wiring is usually just a joke. Newer products have solutions for completing a nice clean install. Below water Corina White/ Above water Sea Foam Green. Waiting on the rub rail and paperwork.

Thanks for this video, I was planning to rebuild my boat, 21 ft glass centre console- rotten transom, soft floor, needs a full re wire and I want a new motor. Instead I cut my losses found a done up boat for $20 grand but with a older motor, so I bought that, I can use it straight away, do up my old boat for fun, while I wait for a new motor to come from Japan which will probably take 12 months or more in Australia.

My current project is a 1972 cruise a home 40’ Corsair. Auction and back taxes under $820. Yes it is was a basket case, yet a fully functional unit from then is averaging $70,000 in working order with the mechanicals including wear and tear on existing 40 year old materials. I am estimating my time and materials to be about that same $70,000 BUT I will have a seasoned and new boat tech and mechanicals with a updated interior. That would be close to $1million new for under 100,000

I watch the show all the time. Great job. I just purchased a used boat, the price I paid was 10 grand below the asking price because of things it needed. Now restoring the boat required the following. New gelcoat, reseal, rub rail, new center console, new seats and upholstery, electronics, new live well, rewired, new head unit and speakers and new props. This ended up costing an additional 18 thousand dollars. So yea, the price can climb up there really fast. One of the most expensive part of the restore was the labor. Ouch!

Lately the Yamaha F40 is coming down slowly over night/after few hours. I see no oil leakage, I checked the power trim oil level and everything seems normal. The screw to manually trim the motor is ok as well. I read somewhere that "If no leaks are found, it also could have been a cylinder bypassing internally"... Since I live in a small Greek island where no mechanical issues can be dealt with, can you tell me if you have a video about this specific problem? Thanks again

Ouch that finger looks narley dude!
Out here in CA the cost for even a shell of a jetski is super high. Since the boat is basically brand new, throw in a top end rebuild to it, you could probably get close to 30K. I mean it is now in like new condition.
That being said for someone who doesn't do this as a business it is a labor of love to have a boat. For someone like me, rebuilding the ass end of a boat is probably not something I would take on personally. I can do some minor glass repair, but nothing like you see from hurricane damaged boats.
We look for those barn finds where the haul is in great condition, but maybe is needs a motor rebuild or it doesn't have a motor at all and the owner just wants it gone.
It is amazing though over time guys who work on boats collect some much stuff.

I tend to avoid boats with wood in them. All fiberglass boats are great. You don’t have to completely tear them apart and rebuild them. I personally don’t have the time or skill to do this. They tend to be more expensive but you can get them for cheap if you look hard enough.
We got a 1999 Key West 196 Bay Reef with a 1999 150 Johnson Ocean Pro, a Humminbird 898c SI fish finder, a Boss MRG 350B stereo, and SeaDek covering the whole thing for $6500. It only needed a new and rewiring under the dash. It took us about 8 hours to fix.

  • @riverakers

I would say for what you have into that boat minus the labor and for something you know was done right 26,000 was a steal. If you had to pay for labor it would still be worth it when you compare the cost of a new boat of the same size and outboard.

It seems like you did pretty well on this one. If you figure your labor being worth $25/hr. That's another $4,000 on too of $21,700. But in today's market, I'm sure you ended up in the black. I'd probably ask $29k and settle at min. $27k. So I have to assume you still covered your material and labor, plus the profit. And you have the rigging and motor to sell, or use in another project (if you haven't already). Am I close?

Not sure you could justify the cost of it only brings $25k that’s $3k profit with 156 hours would be $20 a hour. I guess that’s not horrible but seems like slave labor for that rate. But at least I’m sure it’s fun

I knew I couldn't afford to restore and older boat unless I started out with something in pretty good shape 😂. It took me quite a while to find a boat I thought I could restore and I went the easy route. I bought a CC with hardly any interior to replace easy to work on and in need of little things and a lot of labor 😂. It's awesome though because it's a blank canvas I can put whatever I want on. I'm under $7,500 invested and about 40 hrs😂. Buy the time I have it where I want it I'll be around $9,000 Invested for a boat that looks brand new with a trailer that's completely restored. That's until the 87 Black Max 150 quits 😂 Then it won't be a bargain and I'll never get what I have into it back😂. I don't care though I planned on getting a newer motor for it anyway. This Black max has great compression and runs good so I'm keeping it alive as long as I can. I'm gonna go broke with the gas but no 4 stroke sounds like this and the power to weight ratio is awesome. Moves that 19' boat with absolute authority 😂.
