  • A Philips Marathon Universal CFL, model SLS15. It is a 15 watts CFL, which is allegedly equivalent in terms of brightness to a 60-75 watts incandescent bulb. This Universal SLS 15 CFL is intended to fit a variety of different covers Philips made, this particular one is an R30 flood shape.
This product is a very interesting concept that I've never come across before. I suspect there were various different adapters of different shapes and form factors that could be purchased which these bulbs would fit into.
Despite the interesting concept, this is not a very good product in reality as it subjects the self-ballasted bulb to conditions that will drastically shorted the lifespan. The adapter encloses the tube into a very small area, containing all the heat and putting it against the ballast, causing it to run extremely hot. Additionally, this type of bulb is often used in a recessed can or spot light fixture, both of which would further enclose the ballast itself, and potentially have the bulb orientated with the ballast up, causing it run even hotter.
These were excellent quality bulbs made in Mexico. Under proper conditions, these are capable of achieving extremely high hours of operation. I suspect the reason I've never come across any of these is because they've all failed, due to poor use case conditions. Unfortunately this one is no exception to that, and reached EOL during the video.

Woah, that was crazy! Seeing both instances where touching the CFL makes it try to ignite, I wonder if this is a symptom of the ballasts running extremely hot all through their lives. Maybe there is some kind of component that has to do with starting the tube that is very heat-sensitive and just gives up the ghost after facing extreme temperatures for long periods of time, leading to this phenomenon?

I wonder if drilling a circle of ventilation holes around the top and bottom would allow heat to convect through
