Back from a YouTube ban! Faulty soap foam dispenser - with schematic

- If you wonder why there haven't been videos for a while, it's because I received what I believe to be a very unfair strike from UA-cam for a harmless 18 second short where I singed the end of my beard with a lighter in a controlled manner.
I bought this unit a while ago for a long term test of different units. Many of the other units had annoying technical issues, including one that saw its own foam and kept squirting more out, thinking a hand was there. And another that would crash and turn off every time foam was dispensed (probably an undersized lithium cell).
These units do tend to wear out over time, and a very common issue is the foam enhancer blocking. I may force some water through the foam enhancer in reverse in this unit to try and clear any debris out of the very fine moussing mesh. It does sound slower than I recall, so it could have an issue with loss of lubricant on the pumps wobble plate, or is perhaps struggling to push the liquid through a clogged mesh.
Nice logical circuitry though, and the software seems to be pretty good too. The standby battery life is exceptional given that the hand sensor remains active 24/7.
The foam pumps in these units are a dedicated unit designed for the many hand-soap or sanitiser foaming dispensers in use. The use of foam instead of liquid soap means that a refill lasts ages, but still gives you the effect of a good portion of soap.
The sensor PCB was very nicely implemented, with it's little black foam surrounds to ensure low infrared leakage between the emitter and detector. A test of the detector showed a massive change in resistance between ambient light and pointing an infrared remote at it. Literally from 10's of megohms to tens of kilohms.
If you enjoy these videos you can help support the channel with a dollar for coffee, cookies and random gadgets for disassembly at:- www.bigclive.com/coffee.htm
This also keeps the channel independent of UA-cam's algorithm quirks, allowing it to be a bit more dangerous and naughty.

They probably had concerns that small children might try to emulate you by setting fire to their own beards.
I don't think that was the first time he had done it... but please... WON'T SOMEONE THINK OF THE CHILDREN!! 💩
Yep gotta worry about all those children with glorious beards 😂 Glad to have you back Clive!
Yes that would make sense, interesting thought.
makes sense, we must protect the children with beards
That would actually _help_ most modern children imho
If God didn't want us to light our beards on fire, he wouldn't have made them so flammable.
They're boringly slow-combusting.

@@flowerpt I laughed so hard at this. Thanks!
it could have something to do with self harm or something like that, which UA-cam can't allow. Plus i could be dangerous in which someone could copy this who is not experienced and then burn their house down... anythings possible,
@@wardfiction5693 You're probably right but YT still allow people to post videos of themselves doing ridiculously dangerous things e.g Sam Pilgrim recently posted a video (still up) of him riding a home modified bike with 24" circular saw blades for wheels. No injuries in that example but there are loads of videos of people hurting themselves doing dangerous things, the only way this would be different is because you "hurt" yourself on purpose.
Video where Big Clive singes his beard for his own amusement: BAN IT!
Video with detailed instructions on Lichtenburg wood burning: Seems fine.
I keep reporting a channel where a kid puts liquid mercury in their mouth, and tells other kids it's fine. And says it is ok to do with Uranium as well. And thousands watch it. Even in the comments it is encouraged. Still up.

If YT spent more time blocking fraudulous scam ads and letting crook advertisers loose on the site and less on some content that is perfectly fine ... glad you're back
I get some of the most scammy ads on UA-cam, lately it's been a lot of the same ones, no doubt Google is farming my search history and comments.
You'd think YTs could identify an ad with an AI.voice telling us that something invented by "two engineers" was "disrupting the market"
Can't do that, that would cut into the profit!
Those ads are very useful by warning people that the product is a 10 cent piece of crap.
You guys are just salty because you don't shop like a billionaire!
The enshittifcation shall continue until profit improves.
Welcome back, Clive. Glad to see you return.
I wish YT would spend 1% of the effort they expend to make their product more awful into improving it. Everything they have done in the last decade is in the service of advertiser-driven censorship and crushing creativity.
Everyone who once worked there that made things work well has long since left. They are coasting on the fumes of the past as they put ever bigger dummies in the driver's seat.

Btw, if you’re careful about what you add to your UA-cam history it’ll really cut down on bad recommendations. If you watched something you don’t want similar content from, delete it from your viewing history. If a recommendation is bad you can use the lil three dots by it (or possibly click and hold on mobile) and either tell it not to recommend it, or block the entire channel.

@@MichaelOfRohan Its just a money making platform now. And we can't have advertisers and corporations put to ANY kind of trouble., Not when we can wreck legitimate video makers instead...
YT and G. company (owner of YT) is being monopolist. There are other platforms, which we can use to upload and watch.
Unlike a lot of the cheap, trashy products you usually review, whoever laid out this board apparently took some pride in their work. Short traces, small loop area, and I'd go so far as to say that it's aesthetically pleasing. And not one but *two* decoupling capacitors across the battery, and one on the MCU, _and_ one across the power connection?! Salisbury might decry it as "wasteful and ridiculous excess," but I approve.
It is well designed. And the software seems very good too.
All those mechanical connections and you can get it for around 16 bucks? Anyway I would have soldered the motor to the board, who knows what reactive loads do to the contacts.
I found the same. There must be a certain national pride in the Chinese soap dispenser industry, or at least an enlightened CP official in charge of it. So many inexpensive products are trash, but the Chinese soap dispenser I bought is very well thought out and made with high quality materials.
I remember as a teen in the 1970's we had a large, very heavy and expensive window Air conditioner, that suddenly stopped cooling. it cost $500 USD [ which was a lot back then ]
my dad had a repairman come out and look at it. and he found that the compressor
had locked up, so he took it back to his shop, and jolted it with 220 V and UN-froze it .
unbeknownst to either of them, a curious little boy had played with the thermostat
turning it up and down, causing the compressor to seize... Wonder who it could have been? [ Pointing to my younger self ] 🤐
That's why they have 5 minute lockouts on the compressors now, so if the compressor was running and it stops, it won't restart for 5 minutes, allowing the pressures to equalize and ensuring the compressor will NOT lock up. It's not your fault the unit was shoddily designed... :)
Thank you for finding a bug 😂
"Liquid dribbling out everywhere now..." common problem as we get older. :) "Just schmmooed all over the bench." How dare YT ban our favorite bear! (over such a stupid thing, too.) Glad you're back.

You should have marketed the short as an educational video on the traditional hair care technique of hair singeing. A technique for trimming hair, and eliminating split ends, in which a candle flame is used instead of scissors.
I've I'd known I was going to get a Karen-strike I'd have done that, or just not uploaded it at all.
And a hilarious video short it was too. From the "exclamation point" idea facial gesture before the singe to the OMG "stinky" facial gesture after the singe...hahaha, priceless choreography. Now I know to just smack the device on the table to wake up the motor....brilliant👍 You're the best Clive.
I bought one of these (from the site that shall not be named) at the beginning of the pandemic in 2020 based specifically on your total teardown and recommendation. It's been running for almost 4 years now with daily use on the same 4 AA lithium iron disulfide Energizer cells I put in it when I got it. I am amazed at both the efficiency of the IR sensor and the reliability of the pump mechanism. It's shockingly good. Possibly the best generic Chineseium product I've ever gotten. Thanks again.

There’s been a Clive shaped hole in my smartphone as it sits propped up on the nightstand watching UA-cam. Welcome back!
I have seen several variations on that pump design, some for liquid, air, and now a mixed mode. The use of multiple chambers for metering soap and air is genius!
The first I found was in a Kurig coffee maker, where it is used to pressurize the tank to deliver hot water. Very well made pumps!
Glad to see you back. With the way things are going i can see people jumping ship soon.
The technical term is “sticktion” used to be a problem with 1G harddrives back in the late 90’s. Happened a lot to my Sun boxes (SS2 and IPX) - the ‘fix’ was to either take the drive out and do a quick 90 degree twist, or the preferred method (since it did not involve disassembly) was to pick the box up about 6 inches from the desk and drop it. The shock did one of two things. Started the drive spinning (yay), or killing it for good (boo). Had about 95% success rate with the drop approach.
Glad to see you back Clive. Worst comes to worst, we'll follow you wherever you go.
For all soap-foam-aficionados: I took home one of the empty one-way-foam-soap-bags, that the janitor has simply thrown away (at work)... Punctured a tiny hole on the bag´s back-side, filled-in cream-soap/water- mix, and stuck it beside my basin with a double-sided-tape (thus, sealing the hole too), ready...!!! Still have to press a lever, but it doesn´t require recharging and takes 100-times less material to build (weights just mere grams, after all), lasts forever when not abused...
Glad you are back...!!!
All beards should have a "do not set on fire!" warning.

Welcome back we have all missed you
As a "content creator" myself i tell you it's very bad to depend on UA-cam or any other network. In a day you can lose everything. My account was deleted durring pandemic ,the other account quite popular before is just dead now like frozen.
No kidding. I don't understand how people who do that can stomach it. Nerves of steel lol.
I've had an idea for a channel I've been tossing around for years. Mainly just for the heck of it, not to make money. But the absolute dread of dealing with this kind of nonsense just deflates any kind of excitement over it.
But the idea that your livelihood, you're entire brand can be memory-holed with very little recourse? We don't let our government get away with that. Of course government is crappy too but there's a whole legal profession and trillions of words written on the subject in that context. But you check a box and agree to some terms and thousands of years of case law and common sense disappear.
The incentives and power dynamics on these platforms are completely backwards and they will never change unless they are forced to. But I don't see that happening anytime soon because politicians can't even agree on which direction the sun sets. Ok, sue a platform, good luck with that. The mediums and mechanisms are novel, but the fundamental issues aren't, save for a handful of things. But we've been dicking around with nonsense rather than writing laws to deal with the radical changes the internet has brought to society. And so the corps get to make and enforce the laws.
For all its thousands of faults at least the voting system on Reddit empowers a community to make certain content choices, of course often at the expense of protecting any minority opinion in said community. But then that minority is mostly free to go create their own community. That's at least 1% closer to what free people (obviously many groups have never had the liberty of self-determination) are familiar with.
People shouldn't be allowed to manipulate or scam, but sheesh otherwise godspeed to the content creators, even the ones I despise.
I enjoyed reading your arguments. You are indeed right! It is not fair and it should not be legal to be able to delete all the effort of a person or to censor certain videos and ideas just because they are against the philosophy you support. The truth is not imposed, it is imposed by itself, which is why it is simply inappropriate and wrong to censor. Especially when those who censor have an agenda they want to impose. I say that social networks should obey the laws of the state, otherwise the virtual reality is superior to the real reality and the rules of one network or another are superior to the laws of the state, the constitution and democracy. Totally abnormal stuff. A friend's UA-cam channel was permanently deleted, I was unable to help him recover it. My friend is a biologist and had a vast collection of plant videos and wanted to make a flora video with plants from Romania. All the information was lost. All the work of several years. And that's because he once posted images of a deer caught in a poacher's trap. He wanted to show the illegal things and youtube deleted his account for cruelty and violence.. How wrong can this be thing? Even worse is the impossibility of talking to a human being, you talk to volunteers without decision-making power and to robots... This is UA-cam.
I'm glad you're back!
I remember my dad going to a barber shop in the early 1970’s run by an 80 year old called Chorley on Cowbridge Road in Cardiff. When my dad had his beard trimmed, Chorley would “taper” it, using a lit wax taper to singe the ends - quite fashionable back in the day.

I've had a couple of solar pond pumps come into the repair cafe recently. The motors seem to seize up during winter storage, pulsing 9-12V DC in usually gets them going. Once freed up, the solar cell is sufficient to run them again.
Just retrieved my old unit from the kitchen drawer. Not used it for a while, and you're right the motor had stuck. A few sharp taps seemed to work, and I am up and running.
Glad to see you back. I was wondering if the lack of videos recently was due to you checking if a capacitor was discharged with your fingers one time too many. 😝

A ban???? 🤔
Might it be the repeated reference to the kink palculator?
Problems on YT's server? A faulty stench coil perhaps? Dirt on the lens?
Glad to see you back Clive! It has been too long!
That unit is well designed!
I bought foaming soap dispensers several years ago, they are merely a few springs and chambers. They require manual compression of the pump mechanism, no batteries required. Great video, thanks for sharing. Thought maybe you were going to "soft soap" us. 😆😆👍❤️
We had a jammed motor on a litho press once.... our friend who was going to help us with the motor if it needed actual repair discovered it did not turn freely at first, but freed up as he worked on it. It gave no further problems.
Contact cleaner also works a treat on smaller motors, especially the geared micro-motors popular with hobbyists. Whilst these smaller motors are almost "throw-away", they can be kept running for years with a spot of regular care and maintenance.
I have one of these soap machines with a 7-segment display and 8 levels of foam output. I got it last December and it is still running on the initial charge six months later despite being used 5-10 times a day. It also has a capacitive sensor to warn when the liquid is almost empty. It is one of the nicer inexpensive products from China, Inc.
"strike from UA-cam for a harmless 18 second short where I singed the end of my beard with a lighter"

UA-cam was probably like: "oh no we must take care of the little kids on this platform who already have a beard that they dont harm themselves. The parents dont need to set up protections because we will handle this" and with other channels/videos that are way worse and way more dangerous: "should we investigate? How about no! I have a mister of similar design. The spring that they put in the soft tubing to hold it open makes cracks round the outside of the curves and lets the air in. You have to keep a stock of different sizes of vacuum tubing, or find a stainless spring that fits.

Sorry for your injury. I thought it looked like a leaf raking blister.
I bought a foam soap dispenser from LIDL. Ran off 4x AAA. The batteries rusted, as did the battery contacts. It clogged when I used a white shower gel -- turns out opaque gels have bigger particles in them, even clay. Always use clear soaps in these. While it did save soap, it didn't last long enough to break even, even without considering the batteries.
My mom sent us a similar one as part of a Christmas gift a bunch of years ago. I put it near the kitchen sink. A combination of the sun coming in the window and my white shirt set it off anytime I walked near.

Really well explained. Thanks Clive. I once installed a power shower pump and it would not run and popped the fuse. I put a 13 Amp fuse in and jolted the power on/off a few times and it then freed and ran OK. I put the correct fuse back afterwards. Sometimes these things need a kick up the butt to get them going.
