I went from thinking this song was impossible to approach to playing it mostly fluently in a matter of a few days. One of your best lessons yet.
Thanks, Aren. If you get a minute be specific...was there something I did in this video that made it easier to follow and grasp? The pacing, the lighting, etc...?
@@MikesMusicMethod There's nothing you did differently than usual, necessarily. The measure to measure breakdowns are always great in your videos. The reason it's one of your best, to me, is because the song itself is so complex (more so than a lot of Townes' stuff, for example) and it seemed way beyond my skills. The mix of pinching, bending, hammering, palm muting, strumming, etc. But your attention to detail allowed me to understand each measure as a distinct unit, and pretty soon I was grasping the song structure with a precision I wouldn't have been able to achieve on my own.
So I guess in brief: The speed with which you helped me learn this song demonstrates beyond a shadow of a doubt the effectiveness of your teaching method. Keep it up! It is very much appreciated.
@@arenlebrun1719 Aren! perfect. thanks so much, man. I love the constructive feedback AND the support. So thank you so much. Blessings to your and yours and I promise to keep cranking out great content for ya, and to continue helping others out like I did you.
any specific song i could do for ya next?
@@MikesMusicMethod Of course! Same to you. Your channel has been a major addition to my life and playing. I would love to learn White Freight Liner Blues, particularly the version on Rear View Mirror.
Patience, perseverance and hard work. It cost me to learn to play and sing Motorcycle of colter with the mike's lessons. But I ended up getting it after more than two months and i play it so fast. Things seem impossible until they are no longer impossible.
I've wanted to learn this song ever since I first started playing guitar and so I've watched tons of tutorials and went through loads of tabs but no one has put together anything so thorough and genuinely helpful and throughout as you've done here, you're a great player and an even better teacher, thank you for putting so much effort and time into this
love this comment! Thanks, man, I'm glad it's noticed and appreciated. I don't feel like there are many other youtubers teaching accurate fingerpicking stuff in a slow, personalized kind of way. My goal is to make you feel like you're in a private lesson with me. Lmk how the learning goes and how else I can improve the channel.
If you keep getting value from the videos please consider monthly support to buy me more time to make these!
Yeah- I’m so glad your doing a tutorial on this one after you performed it. It’s nice that you have the tabs along side to assist with trying to learn it! This is a tough one! Thanks Mike!!!!
it's tricky. Go slow and steady and lmk how i can help on the journey and improve these videos.
Wow, you weren’t kidding. The tutorial did follow the cover really quickly, lol.
Love your version! Glad I get to learn it now. Thank you!
thanks! And yup, already had the video shooting done before the cover. Just editing. And it's hardly "my version", my main goal with this channel is to get it note for note accurate to the original. I sometimes miss a few but rarely see others getting closer tabs on these great fingerpicking gems! What song next deadfall!?
Thanks Mike I learned Lungs by townes van zandt from your video! Now this and its broken down by measure flawlessly. your a hero for us who are learning
yes! thanks, Nick. Love the comment and appreciate you dropping a line. It's a lot of work, but it's the donations and comments that brighten the day. Glad I can be of assistance, man. What songs next. And share you guitar journey and story with me.
Thank you kind sir! This is wonderful.
you're welcome! and if you end up getting value from the channel please consider support. And check out my Travis Picking Playlist! Watch the first few videos and you'll be well on your way!
Great video thanks Mike
thanks, Rob.
Thanks Mike
welcome.
Def going to give this a try after one more TVZ or John P. song. Thanks so much for what you do - I will pay it forward some day.
thanks, man. Keep paying forward with your positivity and engagement. Good luck and lmk how else i can help!
Top notch mate
thanks, Abe.

Awesome! Just as I finished Our Mother the Mountain! Got my next challenge!
yes! Glad to hear. This one's not only a little trickier than our mother. ha, so Good luck!
I thought just from hearing the version with the beer cans in the back that he was saying A GOOD OL' MYTH- As in a legendary figure.
ha...someone pointed out and I think they're correct "I met a man out in the sticks of good ole Miss" as in Mississippi. But I like yours better.
It’s good ol’Miss as in Mississippi. “I met a man down in the sticks of good ol’ Miss”.
Mike you teach better than anyone on youtube. I constantly look at your page whenever I'm itching for a new song. Thanks for all that you do for us
I would also love to have you teach election day by blaze, I can't seem to find a decent tutorial for it anywhere
ian, thanks! Really appreciate your comment. Thanks for the positive feedback and encouragement! Consider Election day done! Any particular version you would like me to tab out?
Coool,Can you do the gambler fingerstyle tutorial please
it's on the list, but the list is sooo damn long! Consider sponsoring the the video with some $ to buy me more time! Otherwise please be patient.
Mississippi
Hi Mike awesome tutorial and such a great song I was just checking the live brewery sessions version that he does, Such a great backdrop all those beers. But i noticed at the first chorus you can see him play Am not A Any thoughts I wouldnt have thought those two chords were interchangeable .
you're the second person to catch my error! Daaaaaamn it! lol
I hear the tonality as A major, but you're right he's playing A minor. I was only hearing the root and 5th cut through and my instinct was to make it Major, and there's no 3rd in the melody it's almost an ambiguous power chord. But when I listen again carefully you do subtly hear the C and not the C#.
It's not uncommon for a iv or v chord to be minor instead of major or vice versa, especially in minor keys.
Does the major sound wrong to you? Or are you just going off seeing his chord shape? It's funny, I prefer the major! lol
@@MikesMusicMethod itsa funny thing when i first heard you play the A i thought it didnt sound right. But after a while of playing it it worked for me Then I noticed him playing the Am but now that doesnt sound quite right either. I'm thinking of sticking with the A
The song is about legendary blues guitarist Robert Johnson who was born in Mississippi trading his soul to play guitar.

Colter's version of Ian Tyson's "Bob Fudge" is pretty cool too and it seems like it may be less complicated, for us beginning fingerstyle folks. Does it seem like it to you?
very straight forward, yes! Give me a week or two to try and get my livestreaming video to be usable and we can learn it love together. It's a bit too simple and straight forward to spend all the time on a proper tutorial. But get on my case about this one for a livestream!
Hey Mike, I believe Colter tunes a whole step down but capos on the 2nd fret, not the 4th. Cheers!
Nope. Just relistened and also caught a live clip. Both times he's whole step down and capo 4. But thanks for the input! Always looking to improve and correct. What Colter song next!? I'm working on 1881.
@@MikesMusicMethod Hey Mike, I just checked again and you're right, I'm wrong. I should have known, you don't tend to miss much!
As for other Colter songs, 1881 is a great one, as is Sleeping on the Blacktop and Kate McCannon. He also does a really nice cover of Townes' Snake Mountain Blues.
It's great to see you starting to do songs by Colter Wall. We Canadians are pretty proud of him!
@@davek00 as you should be! Cohen, Colter and Canada. The three Cs! (Let's not mention the 4th C19 as it destroys your credibility as a nation!)
And no worries, thanks for being thorough as my mistakes enter a lot of people's heads and fingers!
Hey sorry this might be a silly question but what happens between 41 and 44? It seems it skips?
Just checked, and, it's in there! I just messed up the timestamp. Thanks, I'll correct it.
I think the line is “good ole Miss,” like Mississippi.
oh!!! lol haha. I met a man out in the stick in good ole Mississippi. that makes way more sense. I thought the Devils name was Mitch. lolol
@@MikesMusicMethod Yes, it's the story of Robert Johnson's meeting the devil and selling his soul at the crossroads in Mississippi
Song Request: mr mudd and mr gold
you are not the first. I'll prioritize it. If i dont deliver in the next month come hound me about it!
Lyrics can be easily googled
Indeed. But they're often wrong. And I spend too much damn brain power transcribing all the picking to worry about the lyrics! Forgive me.
Mike you are amazing. Farmboy could’ve been more appreciative of your talents and effort. You are a special soul.
Idk why my this says user # whatever, my name is Michael haha
Idk why but everyone who covers this song insists on doing a hammer on on the 3rd fret on the 2nd string, if you listen to Colter play this he doesnt hammer on on that part he just frets it normally
I've only heard the live "brewery sessions" maybe he plays it differently on the record
yup yup. You answered your own riddle. I went and listened, the studio version is a hammer.
Just some advice as a person who consumes this type of content. Less talking and shorten the length of the video.i feel that your teaching style is almost too slow and then you can get lost by just the sheer length of it all. Thats just my opinion,no hate.
Song sounds pretty good at the end so good job 👍🏻
Thanks, Stephen. No hate. I appreciate the feedback. I'm gonna keep the videos long form because there are lots of beginner players that like seeing every measure broken down. That alone takes quite a bit of time. As for the banter, i'm sure there's time where I'm long winded, but I get just as many comments about the positive, upbeat vibe and encouragement, as I do about the actual lesson material itself. Most of my videos are time-stamped and the tabs are free. So i'd just jump around using timestamps with the tabs in front of you and you should be able to get around most, though not all ;) of this fool's banter!
