Ever since playing Furi in 2018 I've been searching for content like this. Great production from what I've seen, take your time and you'll get the following you deserve for this quality!
I think this is backed up by an unused voice line in the game files, where The Chain says: "I saw what you did outside. That was _messed up._ So how do you like it when I do it to _you?"_
The Inhuman One has another lore video about The Chain where he goes into much greater detail about the masks and their effect on his character and combat. He also asserts that the symbols on the circle are Pi and Equals, which fits nicely (and given so much has double meaning in the game, is not necessarily inconsistent). Go check out his video, too. Anything else I missed, this is the thread for it!
Nice! Keep noodling on it and you'll be surprised what you find. Most people focus on the plot, but you can't truly nail the plot without tackling the symbolism.
Please consider continuing this series! I would really like to your thoughts on the rest of the bosses symbolism and meaning. I feel like a lot of people don't really seem to realize that the bosses of Furi are meant to teach the player something. I realize this, but I honestly have trouble telling *what* is the lesson you're supposed to get from each.
@@ElBromoHojo I'm so glad! I have a question, do you think there's any signifiacance, in terms of the games themes/metatext to The Flame? (The dlc boss)
@@barkbork7528 I don't believe he adds anything to the lore, no. The only way I can reconcile his fight is if he is acting on his own, because he doesn't otherwise fit the narrative.
That's an interesting observation. I had not made the connection. I actually think the Line better serves as the "lamp" and perhaps you said that because people joke that she looks like one. ;)
You've done a remarkable re telling of the inner depths of this portion of the game. I am hoping to find in the later videos that you touch up on the strong connotations I felt from the story highly emphasized from fight to fight, a coming into ones own and the undertones of both masculine and feminine maturity including the necessity of acceptance of evil in oneself, the humility to choose your sacrifice despite the transgressions you will commit in your resolve.
Thank you for your comments. I regret I have been unable to keep up the momentum. There is indeed a lot of masculine/feminine stuff going on in this series. It sounds like you should put together some commentary of your own. :)
@@ElBromoHojo While well spoken, I simply don't have the balls or the patience to do something well enough to be considered professional let alone the know how on the technical points of video creation. Also you touched up on a few points that hadn't hit me as well which I really appreciate. Thanks for the compliment though lol.
@@SimplyObligation i was apprehensive, but I'm grateful my efforts this far have been well received. I confess that about 80% of my insights didn't even occur until I was editing the video, though. Going through the footage practically frame by frame for hours on end has had that effect on both of these videos.
@@ElBromoHojo I would love to see more content like this with the level of attention to detail and multi dimensional insight you capture across multiple platforms and franchises (because you get it) not only limited to Furi. I haven't seen any channels really hit the mark of multi dimensional analysis as well as you which has led me to shy away from narrative videos in the past. When you do something as well as you have with these two videos it becomes something of an art. I would hate to un see what could have been from a content creator that is worth their salt. If only for closure of this franchise at least. My heart is already broken that Partner Selector Pokemon will never be an actual series lol.
@@SimplyObligation Again thanks for the kind praise. I started this series because I felt a great urgency to point out a host of things I had noticed after endlessly listening to the non-commentary playthrough for years while I worked. I also noticed they were things nobody else had mentioned. I was sure somebody would beat me to it. (I still feel that way!) I see a lot of lore videos online for other games like the Dark Souls series, but I never see anyone going into the actual symbolism of games, which is much more interesting in my opinion, because it's there whether the creators intended to put it there or not!
Great vid. Where I can find more about christian symbolic reception of law ~ "chain, lamp, mirror - protection, instruction, conviction"? Looks interesting but I've never heard of that.
Script and video footage mostly recorded, been slowly working on the rough cut. I've had really bad tendonitis lately which has limited how many of these damn keyboard shortcuts I can perform at a stretch. I hope I don't disappoint though!
I feel like you're overthinking the whole 'Niko' thing. If it means eternity, it probably just means that-eternity. An eternity of slow, painful deaths. Something every game over screen reminds of of, Rider's fate if you don't continue.
Oh I agree it's overthinking. That part was meant to be more of a thought process / exercise. Well, most of it is that, really. I like your interpretation!
I know you're just making a jab, but the sex of the mask is chosen as appropriate to reinforce its meaning. Purity and innocence are coupled with youth and (sometimes) femininity. Wisdom with an old man. The third/Hannya mask is also feminine because of the intensity of the emotions it conveys and represents either torment (obsession, jealousy, etc) or sorrow depending on the angle and tilt shown to the audience. It would have been nice to work that last bit in somehow, but there isn't really a shot that emphasizes that sorrowful angle, unfortunately. However, you can glimpse a little bit of that effect at 4:57 on his Okina mask. Thanks for the comment!

There are some nice nuggets in those unused lines for sure.

Thank you! I'll be sure to check that one out too.
Biblically-speaking, water/rain also represents 1) judgement 2) cleansing
Red hair represents a traumatic past? I didn't know that was a thing. But I guess it makes sense, redheads always get bullied.
Although what you say may indeed be the origin of the symbolism, think actual orange like in Run Lola Run.
Excited to see the rest of these! Just played and beat the game for the first time today and was racking my brain on the symbolism the entire time.

Loved this video, suitable for one of the greatest game I've ever played recently imo
This was great.
Great vid!
This was a really great, interesting, and well made video! I hope you make more :)

I'd love to see more narrated dramaturgy gaming content like this ! Subscribed
That makes sense now. The second level was the lamp and the fourth level was the mirror

It's fascinating that you bring up The Law! The internal name for this character is actually The Law.
"The law is a chain" is an ancient saying. There are no coincidences. ;)

His main mask is also the Noh mask that represents a woman. His second mask represents an old man. Does The Chain say genderfluid rights?

When on earth does 'western media' ever use orange hair as an indicator of abuse and trauma? This is a cool video but such an odd statement.
I had a few examples in mind when I added that, but right now I can only think of Run Lola Run. Thanks for the comment!
