We're back with part 2 of our "How to use Melodyne" series with Stefan Lindlahr. Stefan is the product manager at Celemony and was kind enough for fly out to L.A. a week early, to show us the ropes of using Melodyne. We're blessed to get insider information and first-hand expertise by one of the developers of the product! In this tutorial, Stefan shows us how to fine-tune a vocal performance, correcting pitch and intonation tastefully and even enhancing the expression of the singer in the process.

Hi Friends, I hope you're doing marvellously well! When I first started we would slow down the tape to enable the singer ti hit the note. Pink Floyd would famously do that to allow Dave Gilmour to hit the right notes. George Martin would slow it down as well, both for vocals and of course for parts. There's been many tricks we've had to do get the best performance dating back to the 60's! Jack Douglas, Shelley Yakus and many more great Engineers and Producers used many ways to manipulate vocals to create all kinds of amazing effects! Stefen from Celemony is back for a part 2 on using Meldoyne, used properly and sparingly we can concentrate on getting amazing performances! When your fans play your song over and over 50 times in a row that is the greatest compliment a music artist can receive. If you have never used Melodyne you have no grounds to judge it, I have used Melodyne for a few years and used V-Vocal for about 10 years before that. I will walk into a restaurant and hear oldies music playing through the speaker and say to myself, I used to think this song was a perfect masterpiece but now my ears are more selective and I notice notes sung very slightly off, it is called ear training. Melodyne teaches that, when your notes are slightly off they tire your listeners and so they may only listen to your song 50 times in a row instead of 75 times. Notes sung ever so slightly out of pitch and time cause what I call "listener fatigue", whether if it is conscious or unconscious, it is there. When I tune a syllable or phrase my ears go from a tense state with it un-tuned to a relaxed state when it is tuned. It is not a matter of cheating it is a matter of giving your listeners something more palatable for repetitive listening. The old singers re-sung lines to get them right but even with re-singing they can still be slightly off here and there in complex phrases. Our perception works overtime to try and correct these discrepancies or we can fix the transient, tune, timing, loudness and formant of each syllable and then our perception does not have to "work" to focus the slightly warped mix. When the perception does not have to work as hard to fix the sonic landscape, this amounts to more listens and fans who are ultimately, more loyal. Melodyne is not about using tune as an "effect" it is about fixing the tiny tune errors so as not to prematurely cause ear fatigue for your listeners. No singer sings perfectly and some lines may have good tune but terrible expression. It is better when we can correct the line that already has good expression but may have been slightly off tune. This makes the listening experience more rich and enjoyable. What is robotic is when a singer has to sing a line a hundred times before they get the "tune" right, all the magic is generally lost by that time. No, I do not work for Melodyne... :) Also I might add. If you had let the Melodyne guy just do his thing you would have learned something more. Instead he was timid and only did a few edits. That vocal lines needed "tons of edits" he wanted to just edit it (like us pros do) but was too timid to do what was needed. Not because the signer was bad... but this is how most singers sing. The tip of a pin may look perfectly sharp but when you magnify the tip of the pin you will see it is jagged and quite imperfect. That is what melodyne does, it magnifies imperfections allowing you to ever so slightly sharpen them. Best peeps! Love your videos Warren! rexred.com

I might have missed Pt.1, probably subconsciously because of my reluctance to use vocal tuning, but Melodyne is a hell of a tool and it's great to give us a tour of it, especially because the finer functions of it can be a little confusing if you haven't read the manual or seen any videos such as this one. I have used Melodyne for a few years and feel I have only scratched the surface of what it can do. One can spend years learning these types of software and end up not recording. Melodyne is without doubt the most tactile pitch and timing tool and is ideal for modern pop but the reality is that in a professional situation no microphone should even be pointed at a singer who requires this amount of editing. Not criticising, I am aware this is a demo video ... just popping in my tuppence worth and acknowledging your wonderfully marvellous channel ;-)

i can still use it as a VST and ":transfer" existing tracks in, however, I'd prefer to use the stand alone ;)

Your remarks on classical music are really very interesting! I am a classical composer and I have just bought Melodyne 4, and I think it has amazing possibilities in the classical market. I am not yet sure if the possibilities of Melodyne will really work with orchestral polyphonic music, but I will certainly try it out!

very cool and hilarious.i think that man,who ive seen of course b4 representinting celemony ,was too prudish to have warren in the room there towards the end lol.hilarious attempt of an interveiw with the uber version of melodyne tech.he wasint too pleased with his previous vocal adjustments and discovered and mentioned each one..pretty amazing and very hilarious..im just a melodyne essential guy but have wanted to upgrade ,however earlier having this very man interupt my work flow by inserting a sales pitch(one melodyne should adjust also) now i cant find my upgrade prices so say la vee to throw some more international inaccuraces in the mix...love what you do warren.one day i hope to be in your ears as an artist

Hi Warren, actually i'm writing this comment before i've watched the video, but it says in the description a vocal performance. So i've figured most likely this is not in the video, that i am about to ask. How do i keep the stereo field of vocals that are 9 dubs, so forexample with say three dubs for harmony one and they are panned hardleft, hardright, center, when i tune them? Usually what happens is the stereo field get's less and less the more "pitching" i do, should i go with the formant tool on some notes, or can you ask Stefan how he would approach such a scenarium? I don't want the sensation of the vocals almost "disappearing" after they have been tuned. It happened to me quite sometimes now. It's almost as if they are phasing eachother out. What i have done is tune one vocal, and then tune the others after that. Or program a midi sequence of the vocal melody and tune after that. Any specific method Stefan would use for such applications. To me the untuned version still sounds better, even many of the pitches are hit really flat or sharp (sometimes). But after the tuning, it's like the stereo field just "died". It's like if half of the voices, just "went home" instead of working on the stereo field. Really strange! Would be grateful!!! Great question!! My process is I don't tune doubles unless I absolutely have to! I prefer to have the vocals timed well, it creates a width, once you also tune it will sound like a robot which is probably what you are hearing! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
Yes, exactly it tends to sound robotronic, i also think it's something in the "timbre" of the vocal chords that's deleted with the more pitchtuning you do that will affect the ear as if you just deleted a "voice" in your "choir". It's interesting how many voices really can make a quite ordinary performance sound good, it's like it's hiding a lot of the "mistakes", in some mysterious way. I showed the none tuned vocals to friends, and they just said it sounded good, but soloing each takes, it's horrible in my head anyways! (i'm the "vocalist") ha ha! Thanks for your reply!

Hello, I have Melo. 4 however, I can no longer import .wav files. for some reason, when I installed it on my new Core i7 system, it stopped letting me import wav files, any idea why?

update: until now in Melodyne I cannot make a choir-recording to detect the polyphonic pitches properly..
Love the vocals but that beat just dont go with it though.. Great video tutorial
melodyne is awesome...people bash on these kinds of programs but they have no idea of the depth and complexity and ability of this program....even though the bullshit music they listen to is created by this kind of software
