    Hey Warren, just wanted to add an extra tip to this already fantastic video! I always pitch the sample i'm adding to the pitch of the drum I'm already using, and I do this before I bounce down the midi instrument track as audio, because pitching it in the sampler almost always sounds better than using a pitch plugin which usually introduces latency and artefacts (especially on drums)! To help me out in locating the pitch, I use Stilwell Audio Schope (high fidelity FFT), which allows me to hone in on frequencies of a sound and see exactly what their pitch is. I locate the pitch of the original drum first, and then pitch the sample in the sampler (before printing to audio) to the same pitch, I feel they blend together better that way, and also makes the track feel tighter as a whole which having tuned instruments does as you know! Quick note - any high quality Frequency Analyser will do. I'm not sponsored by Stillwell audio, just think the plugin very good!

    I know I have e-mailed you about how awesome you and your videos are but I just wanted to say it again. This along with the beat detective video has completely changed the one thing I hated about mixing... DRUMS. I've been playing around with both for a few weeks in the studio and am stoked that a 3 hour in time, not bad sounding drum track now takes 45 minutes to an hour and sounds pumping! I had my first iTunes/CD Single release with a band the other day using most of the techniques you've taught me!
    Thanks so much Warren!

    Thanks for this video, super helpful. I watched b/c I was wondering if there was an improvement over my workflow for this same task, which is Massey DRT + EZ Drummer. I've used this combo for years to great success but recently have gotten frustrated over the inaccuracies (extra hits) in DRT. For a free plugin it is AMAZING, but seems like no matter how much I tweak it I always get extra notes that have to be laboriously taken out. I may try Melodyne - unless anyone has any recs on a free option. Thanks again!

    Hey thanks for these vidz! Just saw your interview with Dave Pensado, brilliant! I think the 2 most impactful mixing practices for me are a) turn everything down and b) have a sparser instrumentation, which reduces sound clash and focus on making those fewer sounds sound good. Love your channel , thanks man!

    This rules! I tried the Melodyne 'export audio' as MIDI a few years ago but got frustrated because it didn't line up with the audio track in PT.
    That, and all those extra notes from the track bleed. Thank you for showing how to get rid of those.
    You can also just make Instrument tracks and do the MIDI editing there, instead of making MIDI tracks/editing notes/making Instrument tracks.
    Can't wait to try again. Best to you!

  • @Supermodelyum

    Hey Warren, Fantastic video as always! I've never used Melodyne for midi. Looks like a great trick for pulling rhythmic information out of other things as well. Something I look forward to trying. - You mentioned using it for ambience; My room is also too small for an ambient mic to give me anything the overheads aren't. So I tend to re-amp a mono mix of the drum track for ambience. That way, I can play around with whatever room, mic or speaker combination I like, for a 'natural' or effected sound. (Clean studio monitors in a bathroom or through an over-driven guitar amp in a garage).

    Thanks for showing us how you do this.
    I think Ableton Live also has the option to convert an audio clip to midi and it then places the midi track into the song already synced to the track. Have you tried this before?
    Also, I'd love you to go into more detail around how to select a suitable kick and snare sound from your drum sampler. Do you have a standard set of drum samples you use on everything, or do you select a kick and snare to complement the existing sounds? In this video it looked like you used the one the opened up in the default kit.
    How would we do this at home? I don't have a drum room, but do have EZ Drummer and BFD so I'll use those plugins for my main drum sounds. If I was to look to add an extra kick sound, how would I go about selecting the sound? What sound qualities would I look for. Would I solo the two tracks and play them together until something sounded right? And would I eq that second sample any differently? The same applies if I was using a drum loop in Ableton. If I extracted that audio to midi and wanted to add another kick sound, what should I be listening for?
    Thanks so much for these videos. I'm learning a lot from them.
    Hi from Australia.

      Hi strictlyguitartv Thanks for the great comment! I have to get more in depth with Ableton Live, it sounds like there's many great tricks in that DAW. In Addictive I select close sounding drums to the drums recorded, then use the pitch control to match them close, I always want them to be just a little bit more aggressive then the actual recorded drums and yes I have the default drums quite often, I really like the sounds they supply in the software itself. Have a marvelous time recording, many thanks! Warren

    Hi Warren and All.
    Is there a reason you can't just leave it as a midi track, that way you can adjust the velocity of hits later on rather than automate volume? Or is this so you have a visual guide to the phasing between the tracks?
    Also can you adjust the trigger sample once converted to audio? I assume not.

    How do you add you own samples on top of existing drums?
    Because for those I guess you can't be using Addictive, and so you can't use the MIDI info you created with Melodyne, right? Do you place them by hand? And if so, how do you deal with velocity?
    Thank you as ever, have a wonderful day!

      Hi imaginarytube great! Glad to see there are other options. Is it accurate though? I'm only wondering because I'm working on a 3 hour live show for a DVD release and the drum samples were put it by an editor using Cubase and are really inconsistent. Hi guys +Derek Whitaker imaginarytube Michael Parson-McNamara in Pro Tools for about 10 years they've had 'Soundreplacer' which I believe is very close to the Cubase and Sonar versions, it's quick and easy to use, but I stopped using it because I wasn't getting the accuracy I needed. After talking to a lot other Producers/Engineers and Mixers I found that most of my contemporaries were doing this method or at least a version of it. I have been using for a few years now I can tell you it's definitely the most accurate method I've come across. I'd like to see what the Sonar one does, I do unfortunately have experience of correcting the Cubase one (I now recall a previous Engineer of mine who used Cubase for sample placement) as well as a current 3 hour long live session that I am redoing the drums on. I would love to know a little bit more about the Sonar version Michael Parson-McNamara I am always trying to get better and better! Thanks guys for your input I really appreciate it! Produce Like A Pro I wonder what version they used? The midi replacement function in Variaudio has been around for the last 4 versions on Cubase. It was rough at first but is pretty decent now in version 8, especially how it interprets the dynamics. I've tried it against Melodyne and they seem to go back and forth by each version as to which one works better. Plus I really like the VST Expression tech which makes it incredibly easy to fine tune any midi parameter very quickly for each note.

    hi Warren
    thank you so much for the lessons you are giving. there is a lot of stuff in the internet but you are giving a way some true knowledge and experience, god bless you.
    i am using cubase and ez drummer. i find that the best way to use samples with cubase is with vst instrument groove agent 4 se i just put the sample on the pads. assign them to the kicks or snares and select multiple output for each pad. i create the track in ez drummer all in midi ( i dont have a drumm kit in my studio) and groove agent just follow a long. i dont know if it the best way to do it but that what i came up whith wright know. i was thinking to crossgrade to soperior drummr to get better sounds but right know i think i will stay whith the the samples and see and heare how it works.
    i am intersting in arranging and more from the musical side of things. how do you start a project? choose the tempo, the fil, the groove, the instruments? what are your first steps? i strongly feel that the decisions that you do in this early has a huge significance of how the song will be heard in the end. and there is always the that thought i could have done it in different way which can lead you to a lot of trying and wasting time. how do you deal with that?
    and one last question you talked a couple of times of puting one guitar on the right and the reverb on the left and vice versa.. you did’nt mention it but do you do some kind of doubelling, and if yes how? is it real or fake? you dont use the same guitar? or maby you do.
    thank you so much i am beginning my way in my home studio and just love your videos and i watch them all the time.
    take care
    assaf

    I am going to have to try your technique here. I am a fan of using Melodyne for stuff like this...
    Typically, when I do similar I just use Slate Trigger. Down in the left corner there is a "MIDI CAPTURE" Section with two buttons - Drag on Track and Clear Buffer. So once you get the detail set up, you can clear the buffer, play the song and capture the drum part. After it is captured, you just click on the "Drag on track" button to a MIDI track (or instrument track).
    The MIDI part that you drag out always starts from 0 on the time line in Pro Tools (which took me a while to realize) so it is really easy to get the captured MIDI in sync with your original tracks.
    On a side note, I just discovered you from Pensados Place place a couple weeks ago, and since then I have been watching your stuff non stop (I am just now getting to this one). Marvelous stuff here... I had actually felt kind of stagnate with new tips until now... Thank you sooo much!

      +Produce Like A Pro Have you gotten into Trigger yet? I purchased it late last year and have messed around a bit with it. Seems to work quite well if you don't have faster, more intricate hits that you're triggering. Also I'm REALLY loving the samples from That Sound (Nashville guys). They include Trigger presets with their sample packs. But truthfully, I record most drum parts in from my Roland V-drum kit through various Toontrack libraries and that gives me the best result. I absolutely love Toontrack drum libraries

      Hi Ryan Masse I like to have the MIDI to edit, with all of the software that creates the trigger information in the background so you can't edit it, I tend to spend time cleaning up. If you watch my steps on the MIDI track you can see how I can quickly clean it up. Everyone has their own way of working but I like being able to have the MIDI which I can edit and also use for other sounds. Have a marvelous time recording, many thanks Warren

    wow..I was searching for this. I was just mixing your song "Good Loving", and there is 100 tracks, with lots of different versions of same instrument...Right now I dont know anymore what to do..to blend Samples with mic recordings, and gate bleeds on live tracks..or just to leave samples... or maybe to leave without gate...damn...so many options...

    I use Samplitute Pro 2 as my DAW. Yesterday I learnt how to make a midi track from an audio track using the program. To print the track the program has a bounce feature. I solo the track and the program will only bounce that track. It can add it to the project window or to a new window/file.
    My question is, does PT have that feature too so that you don't have to re-record the tracks?

    Hi Warren. Found myself watching this old video and wondered if anyone has recommended Addictive Trigger to you? I see people suggesting Slate Trigger, but if you're already familiar with Addictive Drums you should try Addictive Trigger. Seems like it'd work better for you workflow wise, as you could skip the whole Melodyne part, and not have to refine the Midi information it generates either! Thanks again Warren.

    Hello Warren
    I use a Mackie 32-08 and I send the 8 bus to the 8 line in of my i/o so I can use any of my 32 channels, So from my 8 sub I use 1 for kick, 2 for snare, 1 for Hat, 2 in stereo for toms and 2 in stereo for overheads. So no control on the individual’s toms and only 1 kick so I use drums/samples replacement if I need something more for the kick … How would you set it up?

    • @Producelikeapro
      @Producelikeapro  8 років тому +1

      Hi +Michel Doucet Great question! Honestly I try never to record more than a rack and a floor! Very few professional session players bring more than one rack and one floor! I've recorded Kenny Aronoff several times and we usually just use the one rack and floor, Victor Indrizzo, Blair Sinta etc. I would highly recommend reducing the toms and that will solve the problem! In my studio I have my '64 Ludwig Kit set up with a single rack and a floor only. I hop e that helps! Thanks very much I really appreciate it! Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren

      Hi +Michel Doucet The Rack Tom and Floor Tom. I am suggesting that the drummer use only two toms not three when using minimal amounts of mics. Does that much sense? Have a marvellous time recording, many thanks Warren

      Hi Michael Briggs thanks for the comment! I have only used the Slate Trigger stuff a couple of times, I'll ask around and see who likes it! Thanks for pointing that out! Can you edit the MIDI trigger points, I need that. Have a marvelous time recording, many thanks! Warren

    • @alexzaviar
      @alexzaviar 8 років тому

      +Produce Like A Pro You actually can edit the midi with Slates Trigger. Down in the bottom left you have MIDI Capture that captures the data as you play the track. Once you have it set up, you can just drag it out into a MIDI track and then edit as needed.

  • @JeroenBaxexm
    @JeroenBaxexm 8 років тому

    Is there a particular reason for the bouncing (printing) of the midi into wav? With midi instruments, editing midi (until it is done) is way more easy and natural (in the case of addictive for sure).

    • @Producelikeapro
      @Producelikeapro  8 років тому

      H+Jeroen Bax (exm) I always create audio as wave files for mixing, it puts less strain on my cpu! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren

    • @JeroenBaxexm
      @JeroenBaxexm 8 років тому

      +Produce Like A Pro Ah, yeah, thought so. So, if you are writing (producing), you bounce (print) less fast? Like, until your happy with the midi arrangement (in the case of softsynths/vst's)? Or do you use so much in the box, that bouncing is necessary?

  • @joereesemusic

    The only drawback to these kinds of operations imo is that by the time I get too deep clicking around and perfecting sounds, I've lost some momentum on that creative spark. Then end result of melding the two parts together sounded fantastic though! Great technique for enhancing what may have been missing in the tracking.

    For some reason my midi track is importing at a shorter length then the actual audio file. Sorry if that doesn't make sense. When i import the midi after the melodyne conversion, it only gives me a small section of the original tack.

    • @Producelikeapro

    • @Dev-nc7fv

      Yes. I'll export the entire consolidated track from protools. Then open it up in Mel and export it as a midi file. Only a portion of the midi file will load when I drop it back into PT.
      Thanks for your help!

      +Pmansen Yeah you can do this even without Melodyne in Logic. There's a feature called "audio to midi". Once you have your midi file you can bring all your notes to the same pitch and use the EXS24 synth or anything else to trigger a sample of your choice from the midi information.

    Hi Warren, if you'd see how easy it is to do this in Studio One, you would start to cry :) If you're interested, I could create a small video to demonstrate it for you.
    It can really save you a lot of time in the long run, even if you'd only use it for all the Melodyne work.

    • @Producelikeapro
      @Producelikeapro  9 років тому

      Hi David Mood I would definitely be interested in seeing what it could do! I like to have control of the MIDI info though, Pro Tools Sound replacer and the Steven Slate one each will still mis trigger so most guys I know use this method to get really accurate results. For me the ultimate quality is more important than saving a few minutes. Thanks for watching and commenting! Have a marvelous time recording, many thanks Warren

    There are two other tricks to get rid of the machine gun effect other then gain which works just as good. Modulating the phase with an impulse automating shape (straight lines that instantly snap to a value or hold points). varietyofsound.wordpress.com/2010/05/07/nastyvcs-released-today/ Free plug in with the feature to change the phase. Also you can do the same type of automation,but with an EQ cut around the fundamental which simulates the attack variations since the fundamental gives us the biggest impression on the attack. You can also move the cut or gain to different frequencies as well as raising the gain or cutting. Doing this with the gain instead is more stable when it comes to phase since the other techniques involve changing the phase as well as using an EQ even if it's a little bit.
