Damn broham, you just saved my quarantine. Take this sub why don't ya. To elaborate- my PS2 "broke" years ago. I screw-drove it apart, hit it with the dust-off, and took a drunk q-tip to the laser assemblage, but no dice unfortunately. I bagged it up, along with all its cords & cables, and my various controllers. The past two days, I've been listening to old rpg OSTs and watching let's plays of retro games and got inspired to pull the old thing out. Much to my chagrin, "DISK READ ERROR", and some mild ptsd of it completely crapping out ~6 years ago was all that awaited me. Quick search led to you, and turns out that guide I saw last time around failed to detail the bit about the adjustable white gear. After a dusting, a swabbing, and a meticulous adjusting of said gear, the miraculous occurred and I now have you to thank sir. Now I can dive into nostalgia myself, instead of simply sampling it vicariously. For those requiring the "gear fix", turn it until it clicks loudly and "resets" as our friend shows in the video. Try it like that first, but if it still doesn't work- as was the case for mine, then from the beginning position, keep trying it after turning in intervals of 4 clicks. Eventually, it will start detecting PS2 disks again. At first, it may detect the disk, but keep looping back to the browser screen whenever you click on the disk. If that happens, you're in the right ballpark- just simply experiment with turning the gear in intervals of only 2 from that position, first backwards, then if that still doesn't work, 2 forwards from that position. Chances are, after two additional clicks from that position in either direction, your laser assemblage's height will be at the exact ideal level to begin detecting and properly reading the disks again. Hope this further helps those in similar positions checking out this video. Sorry for any possible confusion.

If you want to more easily determine the issue your ps2 has, put the game you want to play inside of the ps2 upside down. If the ps2 does not show an error message within 5 minutes or so, then you probably want to follow the fix showed in this video. If it does, your ps2 may just be having trouble processing the data on the disc. To fix this, I removed my memory card whilst the ps2 was reading the disc, then re insert the memory card when you know the ps2 has completed reading the disc. If this does not work, follow the guide in the video.

That white wheel you point out at 3:10 doesn't have to be adjusted manually on this particular PS2. The PS2 you have is a launch SCPH-30001 and that white gear on these particular PS2s is actually adjusted automatically when you insert a disc by a small motor next to it.
You're right. Part of this channel is learning as I learn, so some old videos have wrong information and as videos get newer, and I learn more, better information comes.

I haven’t used my PS2 since 2004, it kept getting error messages when I tried to play any game. First i thought the problem was CDs, thinking i played them to much and it reached the end of it’s life. Bought a new game assuming everything would go back to normal.....nope, still getting that error messages. That’s when i discovered the problem was the lens. 🤦🏻♀️ I got lazy, didn’t wanna fix it, figured I was never going use/need it so i ended up putting it away and forgot all about it until 2021. Now that the cable is no longer active in my home, It’s really, really boring without it. But damn I’m glad i never got rid of my PS2 for situations such as mine. You did a great video man I'm having issues with my PlayStation right now my system is playing PlayStation 1 disc and music CDs but it won't play PlayStation 2 games or DVDs so I'm trying to see how can you help me fix this issue
Thank you so much for the help. I was super scared to take off the warranty label at first, but after learning they shut this cleaning service down I wanted to go through and do a once over on the playstation to get a feel for knowing what I've been playing on for 17 years and if it needed service. BIG QUESTION THOUGH, after going through the once over, cleaning and everything, my blue discs still wont work on my PS2 without putting a little masking tape on the inside edge. I didn't do the last resort cleaning method since that one seems a little scary to only being able to do it a few times, but I'm lost since I cleaned everything else, and all disc work except blue. Black and silver discs work just fine though. Any advice would be much appreciated
You need a new laser, most likely a 400c will be your laser, it was the most used in ps2s. The blue disc is CD format. As is ps1, and ps1 discs are DVD format. On the bottom of your laser there willbe 2 small dials, you can gently twist one to increase the CD lasers power. This is called pot tweaking. I would research it a bit before you do it. But it should have positive results, and if it doesnt, buy a new laser
My PS2 still plays DVD-rom games, but it can’t read anything from the PS1 or the blue disks from the PS2, so all the CR-rom games. Does that sound like an issue with the laser?
you have a sega saturn that doesnt work? the saturn has a VERY strong laser, that usually doesnt die, did you try the qtip and alcohol on the saturn lens?
RETRO GAMING ARTS...that I remember the CD won't spin, no reading. I have my old Sega Saturn that I am talking about. The brand new one I bought at eBay for 77 bucks...well works.
I remember trying to fix it, cleaning the lens, still not working and then I started messing with the knob. Is there any way of re-aligning it or is it better to buy a new one?
@@melloniefrazier2278 Dual layer discs are normally for games. It increases the data storage but many consoles struggle to read them, mostly Wii and PS2 from what I've heard.
I have a Test unit in this model. I screwed up the factory calibration wheel setting, and now the spindle motor won’t even twitch when powered on, like a normal optical drive. It wouldn’t work with the new laser or the old laser? Any tips for fixing this? The laser WILL move up and down the bars and I see it bopping around looking for a disc, but the disc won’t spin at all.
Just a slight heads-up for all who have this issue - give the PS2 some time before going bananas. I thought I had this issue. Picked everything apart - which by all means was very needed. But after I re-assembled everything there was no change. BUT! Turns out - the console IS reading the discs - but it takes shit loads of time to read it (that wa the case for me). Turns out it took the console almost exactly 4 mins to read the disc - and we adjusted the power-output too even. AND I have to manually go into the "Browser"-menu in order to access the disc (it won't auto-start). I have no idea what the issue is but once it's up and running it works normal. So don't throw your old ps2 away JUST yet. :) Also - the lithium grease is a bit risky since it's grease - try find some lubricating-oil for sewing-machines instead and wet some paper with it and lubricate the metal-rods with the oiled-in paper. Less risk of having grease on the interior of the ps2. :)
I have the same problem ps1 discs take a while to register and start via the browser menu idk how that is fixable after I already did the cleaning just like he did :(

Great video, I did all that you mentioned and mine is still having issues, it'll read a couple games as well as play maybe one of em but errors on the rest, any idea why? Thinking the laser may be on its way out but not sure
I had to purchase a new laser in order to get it to work in the end. Had to get hold of Lens Changer and Macboot with Ulaunch on. So could update the Lens driver to the correct one I had installed.
That gear which changes the height of the laser, to be used as a last resort - do you know what the factory default setting is? I didn't mark it before tweaking it. I'm currently testing each notch haha.
Stumbled across this vid when trying to refurb my recently purchased OG PS2. Unit was working when I first got it home but needed a new CMOS battery. Replaced the battery with no obvious issues, then the laser stopped reading discs about 3 weeks later. Just got round to giving this cleaning tip a try, but it's still coughing up a Disc Read Error after about 20 seconds of trying to read any disc I put into it. Would this indicate that a new laser unit is needed, or is there another workaround that I've missed in bringing this back to life?
New laser. KSH-400C is the laser for most ps2 fats. Unless you have a very old early ps2 fat, then you will need KSH-400B Apon receiving the laser you will need a soldering iron to remove the anti static solder blob on the laser in order for it to work. And you MAY need to adjust its potentiometer. They get shipped with random values

First i thought the problem was CDs, thinking i played them to much and it reached the end of it’s life. Bought a new game assuming everything would go back to normal.....nope, still getting that error messages. That’s when i discovered the problem was the lens. 🤦🏻♀️
I got lazy, didn’t wanna fix it, figured I was never going use/need it so i ended up putting it away and forgot all about it until 2021.
Now that the cable is no longer active in my home, It’s really, really boring without it. But damn I’m glad i never got rid of my PS2 for situations such as mine. Videos games are quite useful in a no cable zone home. lol 😆😜
Just hoping leaving my PS2 sit for so long it didn’t get worse. Gonna try this method.
Thanks for sharing! 🙂👍
Thanks so much for the upload, it's a great video! Quick question, my console doesn't have the white knob that's supposed to move the laser up and down -- have you ever heard of that before? Unfortunately, cleaning the console and the laser didn't seem to work!
Buy new laser, search "ps2 replacment laser 400c" and you'll find one, and just swapping that in will do the trick
@@ThirstWorldTTV Amazing, thanks so much, really appreciate it!
Thx. was able to fix my ps2 easily with your advice. Really appreciated!
good i'm glad :-)
Great video man , very detailing
Awesome 😎
im gonna try this and ill let you know how it turns out by updating this comment EDIT: THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS VIDEO ITS WORKING PERFECTLY NOW!
Hell yes
I just wanna say thanks man this really worked I can play any game I want now ‼️
Excellent happy to hear that
Great video, this fixed my problem. Thank you so much!
You did a great video man I'm having issues with my PlayStation right now my system is playing PlayStation 1 disc and music CDs but it won't play PlayStation 2 games or DVDs so I'm trying to see how can you help me fix this issue
Replacing the laser will fix your issue this is a bad video
Best 10min video I've watched
Another great video for the average user to get some more miles out of their console.
Thank you! That's the goal, more miles out of consoles. And if cleaning it doesnt work, you can always replace laser
The laser is not dangerous unless you look at it head-on. From the side it is just a light and when a disc is in, the plastic defuse the focused beam.
i’m curious, (also ignorant) what makes the laser dangerous to look at?
Have same exact console with two long screws and loose wires for the eject assembly
I am not seeing a dial to turn... I also have what looks like shielding over the mother board... 🤔
This worked, thank you so much!
Great work! In 6:16 when you installed the right cover, can I run the disk without installing that cover? Because there is some noise in that area.
Yes you can
And thank you for checking out my channel
I will give it a try and let you know. Thank you!
Casey Robertson did it work?
Thank you so much. I can play my ps2 again.
My PS2 still plays DVD-rom games, but it can’t read anything from the PS1 or the blue disks from the PS2, so all the CR-rom games. Does that sound like an issue with the laser?
Yes, there is a cd potentiometer on the laser.
Do you use rubbing alcohol when cleaning all dust or just plain Qtips?
What size screwdriver did you use to take the dvd case off? I can't find one small enough.
If you can bring this unit back, can you do the same with the Sega Saturn?
you have a sega saturn that doesnt work? the saturn has a VERY strong laser, that usually doesnt die, did you try the qtip and alcohol on the saturn lens?
RETRO GAMING ARTS...that I remember the CD won't spin, no reading. I have my old Sega Saturn that I am talking about. The brand new one I bought at eBay for 77 bucks...well works.
if cleaning the lense doesnt work how long do u have to swap ps1, ps2 and dvds for?
Like 5 times ish, and if that doesnt work, swap the laser
@@ThirstWorldTTV thanks for reply, yes works great now :)
Is it ok to use canned air to blow some of the dirt out?
I remember trying to fix it, cleaning the lens, still not working and then I started messing with the knob. Is there any way of re-aligning it or is it better to buy a new one?
Does the PS2 Fat Read Dual Layer Discs?
Did the alcohol clean and now it works!
What does two layer disc do? Is it a game disc or movie?
@@melloniefrazier2278 Dual layer discs are normally for games. It increases the data storage but many consoles struggle to read them, mostly Wii and PS2 from what I've heard.
Yeah it reads dual layer duds
I have a Test unit in this model. I screwed up the factory calibration wheel setting, and now the spindle motor won’t even twitch when powered on, like a normal optical drive. It wouldn’t work with the new laser or the old laser? Any tips for fixing this? The laser WILL move up and down the bars and I see it bopping around looking for a disc, but the disc won’t spin at all.
Paul, I have a Ps 2 tray door that slams open when 1st powered on?
Also - the lithium grease is a bit risky since it's grease - try find some lubricating-oil for sewing-machines instead and wet some paper with it and lubricate the metal-rods with the oiled-in paper. Less risk of having grease on the interior of the ps2. :)
I have the same problem ps1 discs take a while to register and start via the browser menu idk how that is fixable after I already did the cleaning just like he did :(
What size screw drivers are recommended
1 standard. Then 1 small jeweler one
My disc eventually stops spinning and the game will freeze. Do you know what the problem can be?
Laser is on it's way out, it looses power while reading disc and turns off. Buying a new laser and replacing it should fix this
My Ps2 says reading disc then disappears how do u fix it
@@erd1338 Did you find the solution
THANKS FOR THE UPLOAD! I HOPE IT WORKS
If cleaning it doesn't you can always swap the laser for a new one. New lasers are like 10 bucks maxed
Great guide.
White lithium grease, you say? That's the best one?
Yep!
That gear which changes the height of the laser, to be used as a last resort - do you know what the factory default setting is? I didn't mark it before tweaking it. I'm currently testing each notch haha.
U got one for crazy disc tray popping out?
bro for some reason the cover at 1:51 just won’t come off, the top wants to but the bottom won’t budge???
Will this fix the problem with ps1 disc and blue ps2 disc
Great video, thanks. What model number is this? 30001, 39001 or 50001
30001 i think
Thanks for the vid it really helped
NICE! feel free to check out everything i do, lots and lots of stuff like this all over my channel
Unless you have a very old early ps2 fat, then you will need KSH-400B
Apon receiving the laser you will need a soldering iron to remove the anti static solder blob on the laser in order for it to work. And you MAY need to adjust its potentiometer. They get shipped with random values
@@ThirstWorldTTV As much as it could be a fun distraction during this lockdown, am I better off with a replacement PS2 (slim or original), or trying to get hold of a PS2 compatible PS3 (model CECHC03 in the UK)?
I don’t have a screw driver small enough for the disc tray screws
Having the same problem did you ever figure out what phillips size this is
Jayson Fraire no I ended up saying screw it, and i tapes two q-tips together and stuck it in the tray over the laser. It worked!
@@joeybelanger2471 wow that's good I got it open by using a kitchen knife to turn the screws cleaned the lenses now using the knob to adjust the laser finally got it to stop disc read error but now its just spinning and not taking me to the game hopefully a few more turns will finally get it working properly again
omg soul calibur 2! that game was goated!
Thanks bro
Now my dad and little brother can play a ps2 in the living room
😀😀😀
I have maybe 20 games that have zero scratches on them but it only reads like 2, hopefully this works
So the changing to ps1, ps2 to movie works after a while but I can’t simple get it to work all the time with ps2 but it works perfect for ps1 and movies
