Thanks Cam for your reassuring opinion. I've ordered a LC300 too and watched JC's concerning video on the oil consumption on the vehicle. I feel a lot better now that you've pointed out JC's previous videos about oil consumption being normal on modern engines. Like you, I am also hopeful that by the time my car arrives more of the bugs would have been ironed out.

I have had a 300 since January 2022. I have had two issues. Neither caused the car to break down or stop. One was an error message about an injector, and another was a software issue. Both were fixed quickly and easily. I have monitored oil usage, and I don't have that issue. It's a wonderful vehicle.

Hi Cam. this is the first of your videos I have see, and I like it. Thankyou.
I have a 200 GXL(last of the pre DPF) now with 235,000km on the clock that has been faultless. Same with my 120 series Prado (Diesel of course) before that, near 200,000, with chip, exhaust etc. etc. etc. and faultless as well. Prior to that a Celice LT2000(225,000km's) many moons ago. But again faultless. They can build a car no doubt.
I spent 2 years working as a consultant(training) and roamed the plants(in Melbourne) on a regular basic. The attention to detail(and accuracy of build) was amazing.
One of the things that really got my attention was how fussy they were with the fit and finish. That is, internal fit out, panel fit(same gap everywhere) and contour fit. All the time striving for excellence.
Anyhoo, enough of me prattling on. Loved the video, will be watching a few more Thanks.

Well thought out and considered video Cam.
Admittedly, I allowed myself to be influenced by the fear and hype surrounding the reported oil burning issues and other faults being reported.
After considering your points, I now realise that the oil issue isn't necessarily a result of a fault but rather something that Toyota and owners have to manage for various reasons, as you explained.

The reason john put out the video was a response
to a press release by toyota themselves
Modern engines with larger internal clearances lead to oil contamination by combustion gases
And fuel dilution into the sump which destroys the lubrication qualitys of the oil

Tow my 2t boat it drinks 13 per 100km. It is tuned. Before the engine and gearbox tune I'm seating at about 1 to 1.5liter more per 100km. • @mclongkock6678
      @mclongkock6678 12 днів тому

@tyyuuuihycyctct toyota engineer has guidelines they must work under. The 4.5 v8 diesel is so under tuned from factory. There is so much more power to be found after a re map. Also diesel engines are over engineered from any brand. Thicker pistons and fatter rods. They can hold 3 times the factory power level no problems. They will run out of injectors before they blow up. It not about knowing more than an engineer.

I respect your opinion/ choice- my comment came from personal experience not from any other persons point of view - I totally disagree with your statement regarding that oil burning is good for a diesel engine- the blow by not only stuffed my turbo but also created huge amount of carbon/ sludge build up in my intake system causing multiple issues from lack of power to turbo surging, the LC300 was bought from new and has done a total of just over 70k but has been back to Toyota 54 times. It is important to note that other than a tow pack ( Toyota installed ) Method rims / 35 ‘ tyres fitted the vehicle is stock. Caravan I tow is a 19’6. Which when fully ladened comes in well below max limits - independently weighed and certified. The trans temp is also a big problem ( for me ). For the record I am not a Toyota hater in fact I have Toyota’s most of my life and sure there are always teething problems when new models and engine configurations are released, I certainly was fully aware that would be the case in regards to the LC300 but I was completely blindsided by the multiple issues I have experienced with this particular model. As I stated at the beginning I totally respect your opinion and decision to own a LC300 ( no one has the right to tell you otherwise), as I stated in my original comment just be mindful of the points raised - as far as forums go ,they are a great wealth of knowledge and like minded people but they are all aware of Toyota’s extremely poor handling of the DPF issue and it took a ruling by the court before they were forced to admit liability. Just a last point if the engine was that great why would Toyota put out multiple service bulletins regarding the oil consumption issue and the subsequent internal fowling of the engine be it the fowling of the GVT or the increased restriction on the intake side due to oil/ carbon build up and the numerous electrical issues ( granted I could have been the unfortunate one that bought a Lemon ) but with complete respect I am not the only one who is encountering these issues. I sincerely hope that you do not have the issues I am having, stay safe and safe travels

The oil burn can be very reel...but...it can be minimised by not letting the engine idle for prolonged times, especially during initial run in period, as it will promote cylinder glazing. Don't under estimate the effects but on the flip side, a little oil is not the end of the world, as long as you are aware of it. Be aware, John is not the only one that has noticed the increased oil burn but I think it is likely a bigger issue when exposed to increased idle times with no load.

    Very good video Cam,
I watch a lot of JC’s videos, and appreciate the physics explanation given in many of them. I absolutely agree with you though, that a lot of his videos are contradictory. For example, regarding whether or not to install a transmission cooler. One of his videos suggests that unless there’s evidence that 4x4 transmissions are failing and leaving their ‘entrails’ all over Australia, then there’s no need to fit one and in fact fitting one compromises warranty. Another of his videos on the same topic some time later suggests fitting the biggest one you can. (My personal opinion by the way is that there is no real evidence of transmissions in modern vehicles failing, only the very occasional anecdotal report from a friend of a friend of a transmission cooler retailer). Consequently, I watch JC’s videos for entertainment value rather than reliable advice.
I’m sure you’ll enjoy your new 300 series Landcruiser and have negligible issues.

I have had Toyotas and Nissans and other vehicles over last 35 years and every new model has detractors and every vehicle will have its niggling issues. I love the process you went through to select the car that is right for you guys - no vehicle is perfect, but it ticks the most boxes for you - that is what matters. And you go into it knowing what to look out for - every diesel engine uses oil - it is just a matter of how much. Checking all fluids (Oil, Water, etc) should be standard for any vehicle on regular basis not just at service intervals. I am sure you guys will have many years of trouble free motoring. you will love it. I am on my 5th Landcruiser over the last 20 years. I have worked in the resource sector (mining etc) for over 30 years - there is a reason why you see Toyotas all over Australia in remote places. great backdrop for the vid - looks fantastic cant wait to see more of the trip.

Never had a dusting issue, its only an issue if you install the lid incorrectly or use cheap air filters with hard seals. As for new motor oil use, its going to be higher in the initial 20-30,000ks till it beds in. Agree with others though, thoroughly check every aspect of your servicing and Toyota dealers generally take shortcuts.

Good luck with your new car hope you have a lot of good times. I’ve been a subscriber to JC’s UA-cam channel for a little while now and the thing is, he’s happy to go hammer and tong with ANY car manufacturer regardless of make if they basically screw consumers over for anything. Over the years, he’s called BS on the likes of Mercedes Benz, Toyota and who could forget VW so I don’t believe he has a particular gripe against LCs.
As had been noted in other comments, JC does have a thing about caravanning in general and argues that for the 200 odd $K that people regularly spend on a tow rig and caravan, you could instead spend your holidays in a 5-star hotel for the same money with ‘Tiffany’.
Apart from that, you’ve gotta hand it to him, he knows his sh#t and wherever applicable, he bases his arguments on facts - time will tell with the LC300

Water was in the engine and luckily, they did a pre delivery inspection before the owner got their hands on it. I was about to trade my 200 in for the 300. Now knowing I'll keep my 200. I mean that is bonkers, brand new straight of the truck with 10km on them. Had to have its oil drained. Owners are local farmers' wives, so I'm guessing those cars will always be service by local toyota. Owner will never know that about the issues. Just hope that it dont throw codes.
