New "A Year And A Half In The Life Of Metallica" Outtakes. I thought about combining the footage with the old 'Making Of' but I've had problems before with videos getting blocked due to copyright claims from that DVD, so here it is on its own to not risk it.

11:30 Jason taking responsibility for the near-inaudible bass parts on Justice is some next-level humility.
i thought jason was a great bassist have you seen his solo live, its awesome i saw it at the spectrum in philly on the justice tour. great concert that was.
@@stevenwilliams2617 I'll have to check that one out! He would always give 110% live - he's not Cliff but he brought something just as good IMO, just different. I've heard James say that he felt Jason was too much of a fan of the band, and the hazing was to try to beat that out of him.
specially when you know he knows he's saying bullshit, justice had lots of fills and even if it didn't have any, you can still hear bass when it overlaps with guitar
@@laquentineta6241 no the album definitely suffers from the bass being quite literally lowered the point that it is "barely audible" and then some. jason's parts being put back in on fanmixes like "and justice for jason" are vastly superior to the original mix because of how poor of a decision it was to turn down his bass parts.
@@swissidol8403 ok yeah, i agree, i don't know why you are saying it as if i said any different
god i wish they would’ve done this for the previous albums. imagine seeing the making of justice
Or puppets
@@mprior93 right here. i'd love to see them making master of puppets. far and away their best album
The world would not be ready to handle all of that heavy anger unleashed upon our souls
"what the hell happened to my bass??"
"teeheeheeheehee"
Dude, I would give ANYTHING I OWN for a making of Justice. That and Slipknot’s Iowa. My two favorite metal records of all time and there’s virtually nothing.
this proves that Don't Tread on Me was the title album, that's nice
enter sandman was written first though? they even say it in this video.
@@wyzlight2028 yep but still, being written first doesn't exactly mean it's the title album, obviously in some cases it is, but the snake from the "Don't Tread on Me" flag is on the disc cover, so at least in my opinion this song is the title album (based on the cover art at least) though I could possibly be wrong so who knows
@@manufaustino316 now that you say it, it actually makes sense, I think the snake refers to Don't tread on me, literally, because its a snake that looks like its defending itself.
@@wyzlight2028 It's literally from a yellow flag with that snake on it that says "Don't Tread On Me"
@@wyzlight2028 look up "Gadsden Flag" on google. I have one in my bedroom above my bed
This album was pure fucking talent. Nailed every note, every rhythm, every song, and put in some mysterious aspect that made it "complete". Mad respect and admiration for my favorite band of all time.
Amen brother!
I wouldn’t talk about them nailing every note they spent 1 year and 1 million dollars recording the album of course everything was played perfectly. A major label would never release an album that wasn’t played perfectly. Lars drum tracks were all cut up they songs were him playing one take all the way through they took 40 different takes and chopped them all together. I’m not saying Metallica can’t write great songs because they can but Bob Rock is the reason why this album came out the way it did. I mean just watch this every other minute he’s telling them to change something that they would have otherwise kept it but that’s what a great producer does they guide the artist/musician/band.
bro imagine if bob rock produced master of puppets
pfft.. Lars can barely play drums much less write. you found this video here on UA-cam look up plagerise the lightning, plagerise'm all and master of plagerising. they've taken so many riffs from other bands it's sad. I use to be a fan but now I feel like they're liars. I liked their first album because of the speed, thrash metal. I don't know this band anymore.
@@MommaGuarisco 👍 good for you
When James said… “and the bass up on it” at 19:33 I felt happy for Jason lol. They need to release a remix version of AJFA.
There is a fan made version with the bass turned up on UA-cam. I think it's called And Justice For Jason. Or And Justice For Bass maybe
"the bass is the song"
"he wrote the riff"
as a bass player and Jason's beginning in the band, I felt so much joy in those couple seconds
Bob Rock was willing to fight Metallica to make this record great and it is.
shows to prove how good Bob Rock is to make his point
yeah, it sucks when st anger came in, he became pretty much soft on metallica, so yeah and it shows lmfoa.
Yeah. He’s kind of like a parent who’s tough on you as a kid but once you grow up you understand it and you’re grateful for it
I mean they made their weakest shit with him.
Which is precisely why the album was so goddamn epic...if those douchebags had their way it would have never come close to sounding the same way...he was the best thing that ever happened to them...he wasn't some push over Producer...he called them out on their amateur stupidity and well....30M albums later well.....you put those idiots in charge and you get AJFA, St. Anger, DM, and HWTSD. smgdh!
34:03 that blooper is funny but James' response..."HEH HEH HEH HUAH... HE'S HUNGRY... HUH CAKE" LMFAO
At 51:18 I can just feel James's vocals even though they aren't there.
24:06 james' warm up made my day
kirk was on fire in this era
2 things I'm already mindblown by are how Bob Rock took control and pushed them so they could make a hit record, even though they're the worlds greatest metal band and it probably irritated them. And also the sheer humbleness of Kirk.
Bob knew what Metallica should sound and it shows, such a masterfully mixed album
There not the worlds best metal band

11:40 Jason is right. Thanks to Bob Rock.
37:41 such an nice guitar riff from Kirk.
33:18 we've heard it so many times that it kinda goes unnoticed now, but damn, that's a good solo!
You take off the wah, it's actually really mediocre
@@hellrose18 but that's literally the whole point to play with the wah
@@hellrose18 You play it....
@rodhammett95 you were at uniondale 1986?
@@hellrose18 literally almost every guitar solo from this era sucks it’s stuff high schoolers play in jam bands
The most striking moment, to me, is when Kirk wanders in looking like he just woke up from a nap. The producer gives him some direction for the "Don't tread on me" solo, and apparently, without much thought, and zero planning, Kirk just rips into it and lays down a fucking blistering solo. Just.Like.That
53:36 Kirk has the strangest sense of humor and its hilarious 🤣
🤣🤣🤣
Maybe it's nostalgia but Metallica behind the scenes videos bring me so much peace
8:13 thank you james for saying it out loud
Glad James wanted to hear Bass and even helped Jason what notes to hit to make it sound heavier. It’s sad that before the Bass was low. Glad Rob is pushed to sound louder and James always asks for more volume on bass.
Great upload - 2:30 - Bob Rock blowing up spot on Motley Crue's use of background vocals even back then, ha
Black Album is most famous album in Heavy Metal History....really a masterpiece...love it 🖤☠🤘
I Absolutely agree 👍
Really? Is trhu ?

man that rhythm guitar tone at 15:44-15:56 is orgasmic. James' mesa IIc+ is untouchable. (not what kirk is playing)
It’s so fucking heavy huh…..incredible sound.
man watching Jason and James at 13:20 you can really tell how much him and James bonded after all those years
You know what twists my mind? Robert, Metallica's current bassist, has been with the band longer than Cliff and Jason's years with the band put together! How is that possible?
1:07:50 he looks so focused :)
early 90's..was a simpler time, man. This video is very nostalgic for me.
Still one of the few albums I can listen front to back without skip or stop!
32:15 damn he taped higher strings, they did everything to achieve perfect sound
Wow i never noticed that!
Actually a very common practice in the studio. Live it doesn’t really matter, but man those upper strings get irritating when they rattle in the mix…
@@hangloosetjt when people don’t mute the string with there hand.
4:22 Kirk Wahmett speaks
I will always find James' singing stance at 25:51 hilarious like look at him, he looks so awkward without a guitar
Ironic when you know outside of scene he is a big introvert ( just like me 🥲 )
i always thought james singing stance without a guitar looked sorta like how danzig stands
Bob Rock knew how to produce. Anymore, Metallica just tell the current guy how to do it. That’s why those Rock era albums sound so good. Metallica took the reins on St. Anger and it’s clear how the mixes went downhill. Still the greatest metal band of all time.
No sheep were harmed in the making of Jason’s bass strap.
1:56 You can see the insecure Hetfield right there...he is being lectured to by a pro..it doesn't compute...he tries to retort "what do you thinks gonna happen live?"...gets his answer and is completely blown away. Hetfield was out of his league and that is precisely why he was pushed to become the fucking monster that produced the black album...the amount of effort he put into that album is unreal!
17:38 You can just see the idiot Lars trying to convey "Hey, I want this album to sound like shit.." and Bob is tearing him up over it. Perfect! Thank you Bob Rock!
12:05 is no one going to talk about the suspicious pictures going on in the background? Lmao
I need the names
46:51 James playing a little bit of wicked game by chris isaak
35:36 what a beautiful moment
damn I read it as what a beautiful women and said wtf it is james jwmwmdmd realized that women is actually moment after 20 mins
11:40 really interesting to hear Jason talk about the bass being kept down on the Justice album
29:50 sounds like justice
I always liked the fact that Metallica documented the making of their works from very early on. In the 90s there were always these singles with demos and raw edits of some songs available, and with all the documentaries available from this time period it becomes clear that they really see themselves as artists that want to achieve something and relate to people who also understand this and are interested also in the process and not only in the result. For me as a fan of the band this felt as a natural and welcoming attitude towards their fanbase and it also "helped" me to understand the existence of some albums like "St.Anger" or even the "Load" albums. With these videos they kept making I was able to understand the process of making music (= art).
I love how jason's just chillin the whole time
wow i was at this studio in 2018 it was called 17 hertz and had no idea the history of the place at the time smfh im blown away!!!
@35:40 Way to make those lyrics behave, James! Rawwwrrr
this is a treat for me!!!!! grew up in the 90s watching the making of album that came in the Live Box 500 times. Never saw the outtakes until now. This is like reliving your childhood
This is hands down their best album i remember when it first came out people went crazy for the cover it was the first time anybody had seen anything like it all black it was badass
Ahahahahha niceee
No and justice for all is there best album then master of puppets then the black album then ride the lighting then kill ‘em all
@@nixongasmo5114 that's all opinion based. But if you look at the sales number and popularity, the black album is their best album, no contest.
@@nixongasmo5114 for me it's Master, Ride, Black, Justice, Load, Reload, Hardwired, Kill Em' All, Death Magnetic, St. Anger
How any of you can rate the Black Album over Justice or Ride beats me

i give him massive props for at least admitting to it even way back then, it definitely isnt a secret but at least he was open about it
well this confirms don't tread is the title track
ALL THE KIDS WILL BE YELLING MISERY was hilarious
I could watch kirk sit there and play all day! You never get to really see him play full solos live. I wish they'd done this for their previous albums as well!
Can we just appreciate Bob Rock’s hair
Try and stop me...😁
James never gets old. Looking same like a old man. And is hard to believe that he wasn't even 30 years old.
He doesn't look old.
See children, hard work pays off
The Black album songs with the AJFA tone and energy was the peak
A MASTERPIECE!!! HANDS DOWN!!! METALLICA STILL KICKS ASS TODAY AND STILL WAITING FOR NEW ALBUM!!!
Thanks man for your work to get this together man! Love it dude!

4:02 I like how Zakk Wylde comes in and grabs Kirks Les Paul and tunes it for him.
Wtf. Is that actually Zakk?
Zack Harmon, bass and Kirk’s tech in the studio and Bass tech of Rob nowadays and their equipment manager in HQ.
Greatest album ever recorded as of 2022
Metallica needs to do one more album with Bob. Black Album is amazing.
St anger I think killed the Bob rock Metallica duo sadly and I love st anger
We can only dream
St anger kinda ruined all of that but to be fair in bob rocks defense there probably wasn't anything worth pushing them in the first place anyway on that album so kinda not his fault especially when you consider all the other stuff going on as well. People blame him for the albums sound but idk Lars has a history of being pretty controlling over his drum sound and I kinda doubt Bob rock actually thought the drums sounded good on that album. The guitars are pretty thin yeah but idk they kinda are on all their new records and when they play live even as well.
i love this bit 19:23 it feels very raw
It's so weird to watch one of the toughest albums of all time played from office chairs.

It's great to see some footage of Don't Tread on Me. I've always really liked that song, and I think they left it out of the Year and a Half... documentary
There is footage of Jason recording the bass on A Year and....

The drums are so bad-ass on this album that my girlfriend even talks about how great they are … and she’s more of a Cure-chick.
Someone has to push Kirk to make good solos again as Bob did
God is with you through all of your problems
52:46 eet fuk in the studio?? I remember seeing fuk em up and I know James recorded with so fucking what. But that’s definitely the damaged banana headstock 😱
Good spot! I have never ever watch it closely, always just assuming that every white guitar in these is just ”So fucking what”😂
It’s crazy because that EETFUK guitar is in Metallica HQ still lol. You can see it in the making of hardwired video
Perfect time capsule

I wonder why they hug a map of the Middle East on the wall.
Bob was saying to Lars Boom Boom Blam was better than Poo Poo Cat in that particular section of Sandman , 100% right.
Bob Rock is a GENIUS.
Seeing this title reminds me of a time way before this👆... quiz; who reading this remembers a segment called “Making Metal a with Metallica” ??
What's up boys! How's your Sunday? Me myself I'm getting BLIND drunk and relishing every moment of this masterpiece.
46:51 sounds like Wicked Game by Chris Isaak
It definitely is. Never thought James would be a fan of that song lmfao
It’s crazy because bob rock said in an interview that the unforgiven’s vocals were inspired by Wicked Game at this time!! James wanted vocals similar to that. So it’s a possibility that really did play that riff lol.
Bob Ross on the harmony and comparing it to motley is 100% correct. We can atleast all agree with the fact that we all sing those part regardless and hearing any harmony has no effect live.
Metallica it's at its best when they push themselves into excellency, by that time they where just doing the stuff they feel like doing and nothing more, that's when you realize how important Bob's rol was in the process of creating the black album. Although, everything comes with it's limits, and Bob didn't respected them. He (although the band as a whole wasn't really going against it) was taking down the band to a more comercial approach, and that almost made them loose their sound. I'm glad that they chose to part ways and try returning to their roots with death magnetic.
