  • Professor Graeme Close, our Lead Nutritionist and Scientific Advisor gives a short insight into why you should take vitamin D3 supplements as a professional athlete and the benefit it has on sports performance when you're not getting enough sunlight exposure.
    Graeme works closely with Professor Don Maclaren on the research and development of all Nutrition X products. With Vitamin D3 often referred to as the ‘sunshine’ vitamin thanks to the fact that the majority of Vitamin D3 is made in the skin via sunlight, many athletes will be deficient in Vitamin D, particularly during the winter months. An important vitamin for overall wellbeing, Vitamin D deficiencies have been shown to impair muscle recovery and increase the chances of an Upper Respiratory Tract Infection, as well as negatively impact immune system function; all of which could potentially impair performance.
    Growing evidence shows that supplementing daily with Vitamin D3 can be beneficial to athletic performance, especially when it comes to preventing winter infections and boosting recovery from muscle-damaging exercise. Vitamin D3 also plays a major role in calcium absorption, making it important in maintaining bone health. 2000IU has been shown to correct deficiencies with no risk of toxicity making it the ideal supplement dose.
    A former professional Rugby League player, Graeme is a professor of Human Physiology at Liverpool John Moores University and the only person in the UK accredited with the UKSCA, BASES and SENr qualifications. Graeme combines his academic research with nutrition and physiology consultancy to some of the worlds leading sports organisations and athletes currently working with England Rugby as Expert Nutrition Consultant. Graeme is currently the Deputy Chair of the Sport and Exercise Nutrition Register (SENr) and is a fellow of both The European College of Sport Science and The British Association Of Sport and Exercise Sciences.
