  • The Marking Gauge is a essential tool for every traditional woodworker. Today I am showing you how to make a beautiful marking gauge / cutting gauge from brass and walnut. I used mostly handtools to keep this project as simple as possible.
Please let me know what you think about the finished marking gauge and consider subscribing to my channel, if you like handtools, woodworking and toolmaking.

    2:54 That's a great explanation of the U-shape.

Thank you! I thought of the U-Shape as a great solution from an engineers perspective compared to a square shaped beam, that will transfer the clamping force from the screw only to one direction. I am glad my explanation in the video made sense. I am also thinking about doing a video about different design ideas and tricks regarding marking gauges.

Man there is nothing wrong with your set up. If you like it and it works that's all you need. I remember working with limited resources before I built my shop. And sometimes I miss what you are doing. Great video, and new sub.

Beautiful guage. I have a big block of 5/4 walnut that was going to make me some new saw handles. Now I kinda want a marking guage lol.

Hello Timothy! I love working with walnut. The smell, the way it responds to handtools and of course the looks after oiling and waxing it is marvellous. Making a marking gauge from your piece of walnut sounds like a great idea. I would love to see the finished product. If you like, you can send me an email (my mail adress is on the channel). Kind regards!

@@whitedoveworks5651 Hey, I decided on tool handles. I made a handle for a so so spear and Jackson 12 inch tenon saw that I turned into a carcass saw. I just have the cheaper walnut that has about half heartwood in it. But the handle turned out to have heartwood on one side, sap wood on the other, and a tiger stripe effect in the middle. So I'm making hands for a disston k16 and a dovetail handle for a two cherries gents saw. Maybe my chisels could use handles too lol. I'll email some pictures.

finally a really good video without the sadly often over-used and rarely earned hyperbole such as "Genius!", "I can't believe I made this!", "Must see! Insane!!". Just honest craftsmanship, a pleasant voice and a beautiful result. Thank you very much! I look forward to more videos from you!

That came out great. I like the shape to fit your hand and the brass block to apply pressure to the beam is smart.

Hello! Thank you very much! I really tried to make it as ergonomical and long-lasting as possible. Quite some time went into the design of this gauge. It really makes me happy to see that I am not the only one who appreciates this. Thank you again! :)

To get around the "metric sizing" or odd ball sizing - use an American Drill Bit and just some epoxy to fill in the "sloppy hole".
You don't want a too tight (smaller) hole - it will crack due to stresses.
I've used this and have no problems.
You can also use a washer and 2 nuts on a bolt to thread in an insert (I do) and use a hand wrench or a power wrench.

From building the thing, to thinking about camera angles, recording the music, cutting the video until finally publishing many hours go into it. Happy to see that you really enjoyed watching it! :D Grüße zurück aus München!

      Hello Marcus,
I can send you a PDF of a technical drawing for the main Body. I used it to figure out the layout of holes and recesses. There's not much to the beam so I decided not to draw it.

Adrian, I just found your channel and I wanted to say nice job. Your talent is obvious for such a young man. Not that you are young as much as I am old {over twice your age). I enjoyed your video style and I hope to see some more projects. I know you are busy with school and that comes first, but stay safe and know that I am here to watch you work (that's my specialty). Thank you.

Upcoming projects that I already filmed are: making a small carving mallet (with carving haha), a handplane and a spokeshave! I hopeyou'll like it. Have a great day!

Thank you for the suggestions, making a new square is something I have on my list for quite some time already, I should definitely do that this upcoming fall. I was also thinking about making a pipe, a dovetail saw and a toolbox. :)
