Joey Alexander(keys) performed with Indro Hardjodikoro(bass) and Elfa Zulham(drums) in Jazz Spot at forties Kemang, Jakarta, Indonesia on June 24th, 2013.
it's not his age. he's just that damn good. I got over his age! Close my eyes and the music just tears me UP! This is how music should sound. I might have loss much of my hearing but what I hear is what I feel deep inside. He taken all his accompanied musicians on a magical journey, Joey Alexander Way. love him for that.
I've listened to a lot of Joey's performances on UA-cam and this one remains far and above my favorite. This is just pure genius on display here (or, maybe on the planet from which he hails, there's nothing special about what he's doing?). Joey was all but unknown in 2013 and therefore hadn't been commercialized. This is just 100% Joey. Fantastic.
I've been listening to jazz for 60 years and I'm totally blown away!!!! Am impressed with the trio as a whole... excellent. Amazing little man! Keep on it!
Man, as if "Caravan' isn't difficult enough: the speed and syncopation of this variation is intense. You can physically see, our 10 year old star, carrying those cymbal strikes. How many straight choruses does he take? Twelve? That bass solo is great too. What a song. What an arrangement...Go Joey Go!
I've listened to this recording at least 20 times and enjoy it more each time. I'd love to see this trio record. Joey, of course, is from another universe, but the bass player is excellent and the drummer absolutely superb.
THIS KID IS A MUSICAL GENIUS.....MONK WOULD BE PROUD AND ALL THE OTHER GREATS!!! JOEY IS PLAYING LIKE HE'S BEEN PLAYING FOR DECADES....THE MATURITY AND PASSION ALONE GOT ME STUCK....LOL =o) THE WAY HE FEELS THE MUSIC, INCREDIBLE!!!!! I LOVE YOU JOEY ALEXANDER....KEEP BLESSING US WITH YOUR MARVELOUS (MARVEL T-SHIRT HAHA) TALENTS YOUNG MAN! =o)
I agree !! The name of Monk comes easily when listening to Joey's fantasy and creativity. His "Round Midnight" in Copenhague Concert is a real gift. I am so glad as when I discovered Tigran Hamasyan whom first compositions were done at 13th, and when I saw him at Jazz Sous les Pommiers, 2010. ua-cam.com/video/OBGYSBR0_FA/v-deo.html - no doubt that Joey comes from the same family of "biggest" ones.
My first time seeing marvel shirt on jazz stage. It used to be only for nerdy student or boys playing Playstation. Yet his improvised Caravan was played so well 😀👍
What''s also so wonderful is how he enjoys more traditional jazz styles and more modern. Like Billy Crystal said at the Grammy's after Round Midnight, "WOW!"
It's facinating to follow his progress with what I've found on UA-cam. If you are interested in looking them up they give a nice summeray of how amazingly fast how has evolved. Age 7, C Jam Blues and Caravan: rudimentary but advanced for a typical kid his age. Age 8 watermelon man: starting to get a feel for improv and begining some advanced chord progress (more typical for someone at least 12 yrs old). Age 9, Watermelon man: with a trio. more advanced improvsing and chrord progressions, progress towards better time (more progress in two years from age 7 to 9 then older students). Age 10, Caravan (above video) amazing progress, at most very good professional jazz pianists and beyond in some ways. Amazing performance of Round midnight at the Apollo theatre with his mentor Herbie Hancock siting at his shoulder showing fits of delight at Joey's playing. Round Midnight at the Grammys, a beautiful rendition. All of these high pressure situation and he is cool as a cucumber. Age 11, Giant Steps, Cotton Tail... and after that his amazing CD's My Favorite Things and Countdown... Jaw dropping! Perhaps up there with the greatest Jazz Pianists in the world and possibly beyound, all by age 11 maybe 12 !
This aint no kid: This is Art Tatum, Oscar Peterson, Monk & Wynton Kelly beaming down in 'one light' and having ball fuckin' with y'all heads!!! Ha!ha!ha!
"Incredible" seems so inadequate for his talent...at 10! Indro and Elfa seem to know that they're being taken for an unbelievable ride, huh? Unbelievable...but soooooo good!
OK, Joey Alexander kann mit den beiden anderen dieses Trios im Alter von 10 Jahren nicht nur mithalten sondern auch Akzente setzen. Seine Begleiter stehen ihm in Nichts nach.
+angturil The 1st time I heard this remarkable prodigy I flashed back to 1949 when I heard Oscar for the first time. Play way too many great notes to comprehend.
Can't believe that Oscars' playing was called "flowery". He attacked the piano like it was a mortal enemy that he had to slay. Agreed that Joey is a rare talent but he still needs to grow and gain strength before he can wail like the mity O.
Jesus if he wasn't born into a life where he can access a piano at an early age, what the hell would've happened? This one clearly chose his life path before he came here to finish a job.

The bass and drum players are fantastic too.

a true word of mention for Elfa and Indro! well done lads!
Man i LOVE this tune! It's hard to think you're watching as 10 year old play piano that good! This is just stunning! What a gifted child :o)
At 0:06
Bassist speaks to the drummer while casually play caravan bassline.
Bassist : " Caravan "
Drummer : " huhh?"
Bassist : " caravan ! "
Drummer : *shocked smile*
i just lost my mind!!! God bless the child! He's an old soul for sure!!!
Love the marvel comics T-shirt. This kid is a jazz super-hero.
He's already well beyond most of us normies at this stage and he's still growing to this day, surreal.
I've listened to this recording at least 20 times and enjoy it more each time. I'd love to see this trio record. Joey, of course, is from another universe, but the bass player is excellent and the drummer absolutely superb.
THEY ARE PHENOMENAL TOO! =o) I'D LOVE TO SEE THIS TRIO TOO.
Indro Hardjodikorois big name here. a top class bass player.

This kid is going far! His ears are ahead of his technique, as they should be, but boy he sure feels this music at it's essence.
Also his countenance is so positive, grateful, respectufl, loving...
Totally crazy!!! I love it!!!!
Joey was 10 at this time... and he started to touch piano just 4 years earlier, at 6. What The Hellven!
outstanding. The boy blessed.
GÊNIO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
7:36 the bassist smile to his drummer, and the drummer smiling and shaking his head, unbelieve what he saw.
The Seniors were so wise ...Appreciate so much. Salut

I think Joey arrived on a beam of light from KPAX and is really eons old!
What''s also so wonderful is how he enjoys more traditional jazz styles and more modern. Like Billy Crystal said at the Grammy's after Round Midnight, "WOW!"
It's time to pack up playing before I even start!
A question for all you jazz experts out there: what pianist in the history of jazz improvised this well, regardless of his or her age?
Ini baru musisi darah Indonesia mendunia joey jazzer hbs

Great music and great shirt!! #thehulkofjazz
I can not comment anymore...
Unbelievable 5th dimensional alien child on keys, not fair to humans, but a gift to the cosmos
well done kid!!
hehe om Indro agak2 shock, Joey minta Caravan.. Drummer-nya juga
of course there are some other good pianist's out there however he belongs to the cream of them, never mind his age.
new kid on the block
whiplash
Joes is genius
Tiga tahun kemudian Joey sudah main-main piano dengan Chick Corea
gokil
Age 9!!! Is this real life? :D
OK, Joey Alexander kann mit den beiden anderen dieses Trios im Alter von 10 Jahren nicht nur mithalten sondern auch Akzente setzen. Seine Begleiter stehen ihm in Nichts nach.
Awalnya Indro (bass) nampaknya ngerjain Joey, tapi akhirnya malah dikerjain ama Joey. :D
Great trio!
mostruoso!!! non sembra vero...
ha ha ha ......puaaaaasssss...
You still don't believe in réincarnation ? Meet Oscar Peterson himself back on earth to finish the job (or was his real name Joey ?) :D
angturil Can't be Oscar: Oscar was still alive when Joey was born: MILES !
iroulis Oh dang shame on me it seemed to me Oscar's passing was older than 2007. Miles sounds perfect! :) Let's go for it!
angturil nono, Bill Evans reincarnate ;)
+angturil The 1st time I heard this remarkable prodigy I flashed back to 1949 when I heard Oscar for the first time. Play way too many great notes to comprehend.

Actually, I prefer Joey's gutsier playing over OP's too-flowery approach.
Can't believe that Oscars' playing was called "flowery". He attacked the piano like it was a mortal enemy that he had to slay. Agreed that Joey is a rare talent but he still needs to grow and gain strength before he can wail like the mity O.

VenusVoice his father gave him small (cheap) keyboard when he was 6 years old.
