      It's worse than a bad movie. At least you can laugh at a bad or stupid movie, a so-called guilty pleasure. But this movie is just such a bore. I saw quite a lot of trailers and every single one of them didn't grab me.
      - Generic lines that can be from any adventure movie ever. ''I've never seen anything like it!'' ''Didn't see that coming!'' ''We are way over our heads.''
      - The ''so random'' humor is just stale and overused.
      - Character A says something hopeful, inspiring, or reassuring. Character B asks ''Really?'' and character A answers ''No.''
      - Somebody dying is treated as a joke, so now I don't care whether anybody leaves or dies, and any scene trying to do an emotional fake or real death scene will be hollow.
      Even though the animation is great the design of the characters, creatures, and the world is just so boring and lacks any detail. These creatures are just blobs and simple shapes. It would've looked better in 2D.
      This movie's most outrageous problem is its theme of family and forgiveness. If you were one of the people that wouldn't forgive the grandma from Encanto or the mother from Turning Red you will hate the grandpa from the Strange World. He abandoned his teenage son and wife for 25 years. He missed his son's wedding, him starting his own farm, the birth of his first grandchild, and all 16 years of his life. He even said that if he wasn't trapped he still wouldn't have come back. What a terrible father! There's even a throwaway line about how his wife moved on and married another man. You would think it will be a huge deal but we never even get to see these two characters, they're presumably already dead anyway so we'll never get to see them interact in any possible sequel, show, or comics. Also, the environmental message this movie presents is suicidal. Let's stop using energy sources which our whole economy is based on without any alternatives in sight. It was written by an idiot before the inflation.

    Not only Disney didn't advertise the film properly, they released it during the FIFA World Cup and in most countries where football soccer is popular most people are going to watch the matches instead of going to the movies. It feels like they wanted Strange World to fail on purpose
    One thing I noticed is that the characters in the Neutral Spanish dub are voiced by professional dub voice actors, there're no celebrities voicing characters like in previous Disney dubs (except Frozen), this is actually great but it makes me wonder if Disney didn't even consider this movie important enough to hire some celebrities. Though I prefer animated films dubs to be done by professional voice actors so this was a good decision

    I'm glad you brought up the problem with lack of villains in recent Disney animated films. It really does seem like Disney is too afraid to make new villains for some reason and that is such a shame because they have made such fantastic villains in the past such as Hades, Scar, Jafar, Ursula, Maleficent etc.
    I recently watched Wreck-It Ralph for the first time and I thought it had a pretty good Villain.

    I can safely say, even before I start watching this video, that yes. Disney sabotaged this movie by underadvertising it. When Disney decides to advertise anything here in Brazil, they scatter it everywhere, and very often, when there's still at least *1 year* until its release. I haven't seen a single ad about Strange World until a week prior, and the most I've seen as ads was one radio announcement and very, VERY few publicity clocks (they're these public digital clocks scattered around the city with a poster on top of it, they're very common around here.). Bonus: I live in frigging SÃO PAULO, the biggest METROPOLIS of the ENTIRE COUNTRY, ammounting to 49 million inhabitants and harboring the biggest PRIDE PARADE OF THE WORLD. They. Did. This. Movie. Dirty!
    Oh, and let's not forget Disney does have a history with sabotaging or trying to dissociate from works they feel are going to anger the conservative masses (and by 'anger' I mean 'lose money from'). They did this with Treasure Planet, and before that, they did it with... guess... Nightmare Before Christmas. Touchstone Pictures was a subsidirary of Disney. They didn't want their name attached to it cuz they were sure there would be backlash from the more zealous side of the audience if they knew it was a Disney-endorsed product.

    I think I have to agree about the generational trauma trope starting to get old... It's a great concept and wasn't really done well for a while, but now it's been done repeatedly in just a few short years. I also 100% agree about the need to bring back true villains. Overly Sarcastic Productions here on youtube did a great piece about how not every villain needs to be relatable, or to have a sympathetic backstory/motivation (look up OSP Trope Talk: Pure Evil). True evil villains are fun, charismatic, memorable, and can be great for the story.

    i have to say that the reason modern animated films focus so much on generational conflict is because that was a HUGE theme in a large majority of anime series and films in the 80s and 90s. The millenials who grew up watching that anime are now the ones in the animation industry. We were all heavily inspired by that Japanese media as kids/teens and now that we are experiencing generational trauma of our own in the west, those messages feel more pertinent now than ever. So I feel like its less that there is purposely less villains, and more that the ones making the movies now don’t view the world so black and white.

    • @ExtremeWreck
      @ExtremeWreck 2 роки тому +149

      Yes, you are correct, but from a narrative perspective we need an antagonist to push the story, depends on many factors of course. When talking about a slice-of-life movie it's quite different since it's a conflict with one's self. But in a sort of adventure movie, it would be interesting to see an antagonist with certain goals that crash with the protagonist. Or at least challenge their morals. Not to mention that most of the audience are kids (or at least it's directed towards kids) so writers need to be really good at their job to introduce these themes and ideas to kids in a manner that they would understand. I'm no expert really and definitely not good at arguments in a formal manner. But what I'm trying to say is that people need a reason to follow the story, they need to have a reason to care about these characters. The beauty of animation is that it's a format in which you can express what the character is feeling through overly exaggerated emotions. Even dream sequences can help in a story of self-conflict there are many examples in animated movies where it's an interior struggle. This is just my opinion, and I hope somebody can correct me or give me any insight into what they think/believe/etc.

    The marketing for _Strange World_ along with the lukewarm critical reception were the main factors why _Strange World_ bombed at the box office, and I'm very saddened cause this is the first we ever had a science fiction film from Walt Disney Animation Studios in a while and it does remind me of the Adventure/Science Fiction animated films Disney released in the early 2000's like _Atlantis_ and _Treasure Planet._ Speaking of _Atlantis_ and _Treasure Planet_ along with Pixar's _Lightyear_ released earlier this year, both of these films suffered what _Strange World_ endured: poor marketing from Disney's marketing department, critical lukewarm reception and also Box Office competition, with just _Strange World, Lightyear and Treasure Planet_ bombing at the box office.
    Now compared to _Treasure Planet_ and _Lightyear_ which had heavy competition from other films that came out the same month on opening weekend (e.g. _Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets_ & James Bond's _Die Another Day_ - Treasure Planet; _Top Gun Maverick_ & _Jurassic World: Dominion_ - Lightyear) resulting in them flopping at the box offfice, _Strange World's_ *ONLY* major competition was _Black Panther: Wakanda Forever._ However, due to the poor marketing, the lukewarm reception and Disney primarily focusing more on _Black Panther: Wakanda Forever_ and _Avatar: The Way of Water_ (which comes out 2-3 weeks after Strange World) respectively over _Strange World_ resulted in the film being "Sandwiched" between those two blockbuster films and Disney not choosing to release the film in countries where LGBTQ+ is "Taboo" due to the character of Ethan Clade being gay along with Disney releasing the film as a "Disney+ Original Film" in France (due to France's strict film regulations) this was a "nail to the coffin" for _Strange World._
    I'm saddened on the film not doing well at the box office cause we haven't had too many original science fiction Disney films wether it's Live-Action or animated, considering that outside of _Star Wars_ most of their original IP Science Fiction films (e.g. _Black Hole, Tomorrowland, Treasure Planet, John Carter, A Wrinkle In Time, Lightyear,_ etc.) just bomb at the box office and it makes me more concerned what's to come moving forward cause with Pixar's _Lightyear_ and now Disney Animation's _Strange World_ bombing at the box office it could possibly result in Disney and Pixar not doing anymore Science Fiction animated films moving forward.

    For me the main reason why alot of people are put off by the idea of gay characters ia due to how the media basically butchered their first attempts. At the start their entire character just revolved around them being gay, in others the media, movie or series, basically said that if you didnt like the character then there was something wrong with you. Not only for gays or lesbians but for women as well. Constantly not only dropping but basically throwing the ball down and just blaming the audience when nobody liked it. Because of this the audience have grown to learn that the moment a gay, woman, or black character is invovled in the story then its better to just ignore it rather than be mocked again. So when someone competent actually makes a proper character with these traits people are super skeptical and still have that sour taste on their mouths. They are not able to accept that a good character was finally made. This is the result of years of incompetent, agenda pushing writing. They took away the chance for actual competent writers who wanted to tell a good story to tell their story to the world. I watched the movie and for me it was really good, sure not perfect but good still.

    • @robonator2945
      @robonator2945 2 роки тому +24

      yeah, strong disagree. This feels like a major fence sitting take that fails both ways for it. "Because of this the audience have grown to learn that the moment a gay, woman, or black character is invovled in the story then its better to just ignore it rather than be mocked again" Alien was released in the 70s (79 but still) and Ripley is still an iconic character to this day despite being a whamen. One of my personal favourite characters in all of gaming, Prophet, (or at least, that's what we call him, his name is Lawrence Barnes... seriously that monologue was just so fucking good) was black and, while he wasn't the "main character" of Crysis 1 where he debuted, he still had MAJOR story presence.
      The sex, skin colour, etc. isn't what people's issues are with these characters. You know how you can just spot bad CGI? Or how you can just spot bad green screen? Yeah it's that. Audiences can tell when a character is a character, that happens to have two X chromosomes, and when it's for "modern audiences". Audiences can tell when a character is a character, that happens to have a high melanin concentration, and when it's a character that is there for "representation".
      Sure audiences may not be able to pin down a specific reason or even subset of reasons as to why it's the case, but it's something that can be recognized. Sort of like how Wanda killed every member of the illuminati, who had a Y chromosome, with ease, but the other two put up a fight. Or how Captain Marvel is routinely getting pushed as the most powerful MCU character, despite being hit by a tiny blast of tesseract energy (blew up several meters away only lightly hitting her) that Tony mass fucking produces as Badassium. (not even shitting you, look it up) And, despite, again, only being hit by a tiny fraction of tesseract energy, is portrayed as being able to compete with people with a full infinity gauntlet in raw strength. (despite the tesseract literally just being a housing for a SINGLE infinity stone)
      The reality is that audiences can tell when they're being pandered to. Most people? Most people aren't racist, most people aren't seixst, most people aren't any ism or ist, they just don't care. And since they don't care, when a narrative is pushed onto them, they aren't likely to be very receptive. There will always be a vocal minority, but dollars don't lie.
      I'm using a lot of MCU examples here because I've been rewatching some MCU stuff lately and, it's really just not comparable. If you want actual representation, watch the original Captain America. The Howling Commandos are an excellent example of representation done well because, the point wasn't showing people of a specific race, the point was that the "American Identity", being a soldier, etc. is irrelevant to your race, what matters is your values and strength of character. This is further exemplified by Cap himself who wasn't strong physically at all, but due to his strength of will and character he was chosen for the serum anyway. Similarly Carter was frankly just a badass, hitting a headshot on a moving car with a handgun. (although admittedly the romance aspect was played up a bit much IMO) The point of these characters wasn't "representation", it was telling a story, unifying against a common enemy, and having strength in that unison. (which frankly was all the better since the original CA movie was kind of cold blooded, people died on screen, like, died died, Cap through people out of planes, we SAW the guy that Carter shot, get shot, etc. This made the actual dread of war somewhat apparent because the tone actually matched it) There were even comments on sexism and whatnot with Carter, it was done well though because it was played off lightly and in a fitting context. (the 40s) This, rather hilariously so, counters modern MCU properties such as Falcon and the Winter Soldier where a core theme is all about representation and racism and whatnot. The funniest parallel to me is how the flag smashers are portrayed as sympathetic and having an admirable goal (i.e. : liking your country is bad) when Red Skull literally said to Cap "I HAVE SEEN THE FUTURE, THERE ARE NO FLAGS" to which Cap responded "NOT MY FUTURE!" in the climax.
      The simple reality is, no, audiences aren't burnt out on minority characters or leading women, we're burnt out on being pandered to. Audiences can recognize when something is motivated by a narrative. Maybe not perfectly, maybe not 100% of the time, but enough. If I am to address the narrative itself here, I frankly don't even see it as good in the first place. It isn't the 40s; basically anyone can achieve success at this point. Some people might have a bit harder times sure but everyone always will, it's impossible to make sure everyone is always 100% equal in every respect. Life deals you your cards, and you have to play your hand. We can even the deck as much as possible, but you reach a point where you just have to play the game. At this point just about everyone ought to be able to succeed equally if they're willing to, so the constant narrative of racism, sexism, and every other ist and ism seems more harmful than anything since it propagates the idea that you can't. (yes there will always be genuinely shitty people, but drinking milk isn't racist, and men having physically different bone structures that requires them sit with their legs open isn't seixst) It's sort of like many privacy laws (not all, but many, some are good) in that, when you convince people that you need to pass a law to solve an issue, they believe they can't solve it on their own, even if they can. Privacy is generally attainable by most individuals, Linux is entirely usable, de-googled roms are basically at feature parity, temporary email addresses are free, etc. (as someone who uses all of those, I'm never going back to the anti-privacy alternatives if I can help it because they're frankly just better anyways, privacy be damned) But SO many people believe "nope, we need the government to step in". That's bad enough but then you realize that government intervention (assuming the laws are even successful which, big fucking assumption) would prevent EVERYONE from being tracked, when some people genuinely don't care. Hell, sometimes personalized ads are genuinely super helpful! I have family members who explicitly do not care about their privacy if it makes their life better. I don't agree with that choice, but it's THEIR privacy, not mine, if convenience is the price they set for it then it's their's to sell. It's a choice the individual ought to make, and if you've been convinced it's a choice you can't make, that's just not right.
      In short, these were paragraphs of examples and arguments to just say, no, that is not why these movies underperform. The simple reality is that most people don't buy what is being sold, most people don't LIKE the narrative that your race, sex, etc. matters. And, while it is possible to convince them, I don't personally believe that narrative is reality or healthy, nor has it been for probably decades now. We just flatly don't care, but, even if we don't care, we still very much do not like it when we can identify you're trying to make us care.

    2:08 just a reminder. Freddie wasn't gay. He was bi. Bi representation has always been a struggle to maintain.
    3:26 I thought you were going to tell us not to forget that the Little Mermaid was written as a love letter by Hans Christian Anderson to Edvard Collin. Anderson, upon hearing of Collin's engagement to a young woman, proclaimed his love to him. He told him, "I long for you as though you were a beautiful Calabrian girl." Edvard turned Anderson down, disgusted.
    Anderson then wrote The Little Mermaid as to symbolize his inability to have Collin just as a mermaid cannot be with a human. He sent it to Collin in 1936 and it goes down in history as one of the most profound love letters ever written.

    what I don't really like is how the generational thing can have villains, like, it's not because someone is your grandma that they aren't a pos, as I see time and time again, sometimes people are just bad because they want to, and sometimes your mother or other relative is this person, also how the conflict aways solves in "you tried to kill me, but it's ok, you are family after all" can be kinda hurtful, people have this mindset of it being family, so they know better, even if they will never suport you!
    Also cool disney plot for them to make into a movie: mc lives in a bad family, runs away, family goes after them, but sees how hurtful they were and how sometimes it will never work, mc then finds the real family they deserve. BOOM generational drama with villains

Tho that's not really true bc Matilida is a classic, it's a 'kid's' film and in the end the MC chooses to be adopted out of her toxic family and live with her kindly teacher. and kids watch it and it didn't the idea of more traditional family nor did it end the world...

Indeed Disney is too scared to give a message like that to their audience simply for two reasons. Either they don't know how to portray it in a way that won't get the media angry, since we live in a world that easily gets offended of course it would worry Disney if they can't make a buck out of it. Or simply and sadly, Disney is losing its magic. Yup Disney is out of ideas, or they just don't want to risk making other different stories because it is easier, to milk another franchise to death. At the end of the day, it's all an exchange. You give me money, I give you entertainment. In Disney's case, they don't care if the entertainment is good or bad anymore. As I said. We didn't need a rigging padding scene of her and Maurice talking as she is dying. And SOME of those damn answers or changes make the story and characters worse. I mean the whole POINT of Belle not knowing beast was prince was for her to make a genuine connection with him. To like him on his own merits as a person. If she knows the curse and that-in new version- the staff which are people turned objects will pretty much DIE makes it more of a responsibility for her to fall in love. BC people will die. And also when Beast makes her go it actually makes him more selfish. In the animated version there is no mention that staff will just turn to normal objects. Not only removing villains from their recent films and replacing it with emotional plot lines that often times are hot or miss, but also the fact that they change how they tell their story for their remakes. The issue is that for a movie to get cult recognition they need the right combination of good story with good animation. This is why *Meet the Robinsons* and *Frozen* got so big. Both are 3D animation, both are about siblings getting closer together, but the way they handle the themes are incredibly different from normal.

Becoming lifeless “robots” who only cares about money, and to take away any signs of life within children? Are you actually just a heartless in a human husk?

    i literally wouldve never known about Strange World if i didnt work in a movie theatre. i never, EVER saw a commercial on TV or as an ad via YT. when i first saw the digital poster in my theatre, i was confused yet pleasantly surprised Disney has been working on something other than MCU movies, Avatar 2 and Disney+ exclusives like Turning Red. every time guests would come into the movie theatre, they always ask "What movie is that?" which baffled me because it's almost unheard of to not know of a new Disney movie! it was around then i realized Disney was likely giving Strange World the Treasure Planet treatment: condemning it to advertisement limbo. when i heard one of the characters, Ethan, was a gay teenager and how the movie, supposedly, presents him as being completely open and honest about his sexuality and it's normalized that everything is going well for Ethan in that department (idk how true that is, i didnt get to see it myself), i immediately went "Oh, THATS why it's being brushed under the rug". yea in the US seeing LGBTQ+ content is smiled upon (and oftentimes forced into movies when no inkling of it is even there, but i digress), but internationally, yea, it unfortunately wont do well since gay marriage is still illegal or even a death sentence in certain foreign countries so those countries tend to ban movies about such topics. it's a pity that Disney feels the need to hide some of their works out of fear of losing money, because w/ Strange World ive heard from the very few guests that left the theatre after viewing it saying it was a pretty ok, cute and fun movie. the producers behind Strange World seems to have made themselves a decent, compentent movie, but just because of the minor LGBTQ+ content in it theyre like "No no no, we CANNOT broadcast and advertise THIS!" hopefully itll get a better run on Disney+ whenever it's released on there

      I kinda doubt it because Encanto had a more interesting setting, theme and character designs, this movie seems to be too mundane by comparison. Plus it might be just me but Strange world seems to have a more toned down color and lighting, which will probably turn down potential artists (let's face it artists are partially responsible for Encanto's success).

    You absolutely can't convince me that Disney didn't want this movie to flop on purpose.
    It may seem strange that they would let themselves lose millions of dollars intentionally
    But they can now use this movie as an example whenever people ask or demand for more LGBTQ representation
    "But we tried to give you representation 🥺👉👈You wouldn't go see it."
    The scary thing though
    With this being such a similar situation to what happened with treasure planet,
    When they did what they did to treasure planet
    They were essentially trying to kill off the movie itself and their 2D animation studio
    If you consider everything that's been going on with the animation industry as a whole
    This could also be trying to feed into that narrative as well
    Two birds with one stone
    LGBTQ representation and the animation industry

    • @crimsongold6980
      @crimsongold6980 2 роки тому

      But honestly. It's true. LGBTQ animation is a dangerous place to tread for many animation studios. You do lose a lot of money because of it since many countries don't support LGBTQ and will ban the movie from their countries. Already smashing into the loss of money. That and many people don't wish to take their kids to see it because they dont feel comfortable showing their young children such things. My parents have an 8 year old. They didn't want her to watch it because they didn't want her to know about LGBTQ until she was older. They felt it was forced into the movie to please everyone they could and it made them uncomfortable. Unfortunately, it's the world we live in. LGBTQ is still something very new to the world with being branded publicly. Only recently in the past 10 years has it really been brought to light. It's what killed the Buzz lightyear movie. People hated the Lesbian relationship in it because they werent comfortable showing their children at young ages and felt it was much too woke.

      @@crimsongold6980 I never got that logic, they're fine with their kids watching something like the Hunchback of Notre dam, and Tarzan which ends with the villain getting hanged, or Princess and the Frog which ends with the villain being dragged of to Hell, but two dudes say they love each other and suddenly its bad and corruptive. Its always the parents projecting their own fears on to their kids, they're scared of gay people so they want their children to be the same. I saw someone say that even if God came down and told them that it was okay, they would still be against it and argue. Hateful ideologies sure are a hell of a drug, it encourages people to focus more on differences rather than similarities, always something I've been against, regardless of political standing. If people, as kids, found out they were gay during the Hay's code, I doubt sheltering them from the fact it exists is gonna change anything, it'll only make them see it as proof of brokenness, something that makes them or others impure and disgusting, if they were gonna be gay, they'd still be gay, just now they're gay and hate themselves for it, no child deserves that. Its just another example of parents accidentally harming kids in their attempts to 'protect them from evil'. Funny enough, it reminds me of those against Rock and Roll and Pokemon, they said the same about those things corrupting the youth, it comforts me in a way when I realize that homophobes sound just like those people.

      You also gotta keep in mind, there weren't as many perpetually angry minded influencers back then putting everything under a microscope to sway people's minds in not seeing it because in their eyes, straying from the norm is "Woke" therefore bad in their eyes. That said, the movie looks charming but anything that doesn't have a princess hook or an airheaded popstar to creep on immediately gets sabatoged by marketing because while many WANT change and something fresh, there are others who see any change is bad in turn we get the same formula over and over again which can lead to heavy burnout. I'm still salty Treasure Planet got done dirty by the marketing team [though was a hella good movie that now has a sizeable cult following] and hate that they sabotage the sci fi genre.
