That right there has always been my favorite thing about this film. It's probably the first time I've seen an opposites attract story in a family film where neither love interest had to change his/her species to justify it.

As a character designer, I really like the way the fairies' wings are animated, most people just have the wings flap and otherwise stay still, the way they bend and flex in this film looks so natural. Really they shouldn't have gone with such hyper realistic designs, but I really like the visuals besides that.
The wings are cool enough that I honestly want to cosplay marie-ann (even though its a legitimately poor film overall) It was watchable... but oh did some scenes make you whole body cringe - some of the songs rang like a budget pantomime with their introduction into the story
Honestly, the only reason I watched that movie was because I saw two girls cosplay Marianne and Dawn, and both their character designs and wings looked so good. I still don't know whether I like or hate that movie, but the wings animation +insect creatures were great

I personally like strange magic, I still watch it. But there are some parts that are like really cringey but most of the time i loved it. I especially loved the bog kings mother, "I asked for a wedding, I'm now getting a funeral"
I felt that way when I watched it a lot as a kid haha, I still think it’s okay. I think he ragged on the animation a little too hard, though I do agree with his points about the fairies’ faces (animation and looks). I think the wing animations look really cool though, very flappy Also, jukebox musicals are stinky, I agree with Saber on that too
He imprisons druglords and restricts the availability of the materials used to make those drugs, AND is swift to respond to external threats against his kingdom. Dude is arguably a better leader than the fairy king. #BogDidNothingWrong

usually i’d only care if it was an indie company or some company that is struggling but really tried and just needs a bigger budget or better marketing team.. but i still feel a little bad for this one too. just because he spent 15 years creating this movie, it wasn’t just for a cash grab, but genuine interest.
Yeah. I'm going to have to say this but many movies today like UDM and Addams Family have great design but horrible storylines. Just my opinion though.
I disagree with the music part. It would have been muuuch more enjoyable if the songs were original, instead of just picking popular songs. That made sense in the movie SING, but not in this one.

What pisses me off about this movie is that the world building and premise have potential. Not only that, Marianne and Bog’s chemistry is absolutely brilliant. It absolutely feels 100% earned when they end up together in the end. The story should have been about them not everything else. George has good ideas but can never execute them well on his own.

I loved Marianne and Bogs chemistry but the constant songs were definitely tiring and the fact that they were covers didn’t help. The only singing scene I didn’t mind was when they sang Strange Magic since I thought it was really cute. I also don’t think Dawn and Sunny should have ended up together but if they had to at least have Sunny apologize for trying to use the potion on her. I wish they focused more on marianne and bogs relationship and how they feel like they can’t be together since they’re from different kingdoms. Overall it’s not the worst movie ever it definitely had good moments and I even laughed at some parts but the tropes and covers made me like it less
Yeah I agree with this, I feel like Dawn and Sunny relationship wasn't built on enough respect to be a romantic relationship. But the build up of Bog and Marianne would be cool to see

From 17:26 to 17:42, you mentioned that Roland’s design look like Prince Charming and sounds like Gaston. I’m glad you mentioned both Prince Charming and Gaston. Because there’s fun fact about the two of them(Gaston and Prince Charming), the thing is, Rupert Everett(the voice actor for Charming) auditioned for role of Gaston, but the directors said he didn’t sound arrogant enough. He remembered this when he was voicing Charming in Shrek 2. I should also mentioned the inspiration of Roland comes from Prince Hans of the Southern Isles(another Disney villain), he’s the guy who apparently love Anna but left her to freeze to death. Anyways, I feel like Roland reminds me of Prince Charming from Shrek 2 than Gaston and Hans altogether. In contrast, they’re both narcissistic, conceited, selfish, and think they can get what they wanted. Roland wanted to get marry with Marianne so he can have his free armies while Charming wanted to get marry with Fiona so he can become king. They both have sinister motives. The only differences is that Prince Charming is “mommy’s boy” while Roland is not. However, they’re still similar. Speaking of which, I see Marianne reminds of me of Princess Fiona from Shrek because they’re both strong, tough, and know how to put up a fight. Meanwhile, I see the Bog King as Shrek a little. They’re both single at the beginning and are grumpy at first sight. However, the differences the Bog King have servants and a mother who cares about the Bog King while Shrek doesn’t have anybody in the beginning. Sorry, Shrek. Actually, I feel Strange Magic reminds me of Shrek franchise characters. They both have similar message too which is loving someone on the inside and don’t judge their appearance that much. Edit: Even though this is already edited, I should also mention that the Bog King’s mother is kind of like Donkey from Shrek. They’re both annoying but still give pretty good advice about love. Another fun fact: the Bog King’s mother is voiced by Maya Rudolph. She also happens to voice Rapunzel in Shrek The Third.
I just want to mention that the fairies/elves kingdom had something i had never seen before. female fairies with butterfly, shimmery gossamer, wings. While the males had moth wings, while still beautiful, they were dusty, fluffy and more dull in comparison. Also, I hate Roland, but everything to do with his character felt perfect for the person he was meant to be. I was very happy that he wasn't a villian with just another redemption arc, glad he sucked from start to finish.
And theyre all absolute dogshit cover versions ! The only one I appreciated I dont think is even on the soundtrack; when the fairy army is marching they're chanting the beginning of "bad romance". Fitting, funny, and a unique use for a well known song. Not just disrupting the movie to become a music video for several minutes.

I loved Strange Magic it was my childhood movie. The plot was a little “Strange” but the the enemy’s to lovers concept was what made me love it so much
George loves those actually. Even the Crystal Scull wasn't money-making project. It was saying goodbye to aging character leaving space for new generation.
That's one thing I will always give Lucas credit for; he doesn't do cash grabs. The original Star Wars films gave him enough "fuck you" money to do whatever he wanted, and you can tell everything he has done since were projects he was genuinely interested in making. They're not always *good,* but at least George has some integrity.
well when you make the most popular movie in all of movie history its hard to create anything that can compare. . look at james cameron he gave us the terminator and the best alien film along with tons of ground breaking movies and even has the top 2 highest grossing films of all time with titanic and avatar. but because he made titanic which is next to perfect for what it is. avatar got shit on by fans and everything hes worked on since then gets looked at like its not as good as titanic ........everyone compares all his work to the bar he set 20 years ago and thats the same with lucas

I actually liked this movie a lot. Even my father who always prefer action themes laughed in some scenes. If this was released on Netflix someday, I'm sure it would be trending. Strange Magic and also Epic were great!

When I watched this the first time the movie buffered right as roland yelled go with the zoom in on his face. It stayed frozen that way for like 10 minutes it was so damn hilarious I still love that scene, thanks for making it a meme for me to laugh my ass off.
The fact that the physically unattractive character was nice on the inside, got a physically attractive romantic partner & a happy ending is exceptionally rare. I really liked this film & although there were a lot of tropes overall it felt pretty fresh & unique.
shrek and megamind both have that „good“ or „likable“ character look but bug king looks straight up like a monster with the most typical villain design, so yeah it was very surprising he ended up being the love interest
I remember watching this in my 3rd grade class because the teacher couldn’t get access to a Rio dvd and thought “Hey! This movie has nature in it and it’s for kids! Just like Rio!” After that, all of the kids in my class felt so awkward after the movie and didn’t really speak for the rest of the day.
Here's the thing about 'Strange Magic', it is solidly in the 'Cult Classic' category. It's not good enough to have done well with a mainstream audience, but it is good enough to have 'AN' audience. I know people who LOVE this movie, but it's not for everyone. It's definitely one of those where you have to watch it yourself and make your own judgement on it.
Well said! My friends are meh about this movie, but as someone who loves both fairy tales and upbeat musicals, Strange Magic is exactly what I want in an animated film. It feels like something was finally made especially for me, rather than to chase some popular but fleeting trend.

Oh my, this movie was quite popular in public TV in Poland. I remember watching it as a child and loving it. I got a weird nostalgia for this one. I loved cranky designs and their outfits. I’m surprised that it flopped so badly…
I actually loved this movie as a kid and only found it again a few years ago and I still love it even if there’s a lot that could be improved or fully changed I believe it was this movie that started my love for musicals aswell as seeing performances with my family in theatres

My roommates and I have seen this movie at *least* 20 times. I can quote the lines word-for-word, pitch and all, just from the silent clips you put up. I love this movie the way one loves an f'd-up plushie that somehow made it to store shelves. Assessment: accurate. (Also I can say first hand that there is TONS of AO3 content for this movie, mostly about Bog and Marianne.) Edit: Roland's "GO!!" face is an established meme in our house and was briefly the image for our roomie discord server
This movie upsets me SPECIALLY , because a movie about faeries based on a Shakespeare play with sword fighting women, a romance that mirrors Hades and Persephone AND ITS A MUSICAL!!! This should be MY JAM. This sounds tailor made for me specifically.

Roland is one of the MANY reasons why Strange Magic is one of the worst creations in animation and the history of George Lucas (even by his standards).
Strange magic was about as inspired by A Midsummer's Night Dream as West Side Story was inspired by Romeo and Juliet. In Sunny's defense he got tricked by Roland . Roland needed the love potion more than Sunny did.. The issue with the imp is that in the play he was a main character, Puck and an important part of the story plus my favorite character. He caused chaos with the love potion and he never really lost the potion like the imp did in the movie. I think it was never really consider that when you change the humans in the play into fairies and bog creatures you had to change Puck who was a fairy in the play into something else or he need to be an outsider to either kingdom. So when they made Puck an imp who only chittered and made others more responsible for the love potion. They took a bit of the reasoning behind the chaos of the love potion away and you miss Puck laughing at making people fall in love with those they dislike or making the "Roland" character falling in love with a donkey .
I dont think anyone knows he did? Marianne mentions "you cheated on me, remember?" but with a whisper and like she doesnt want others to know. Her sister also mentions she has no clue what happened but it had to be bad.

I may be a minority on this. I love this movie a lot! I thoureghly enjoy this interesting romantic movie so much!☺️💖 I think it is super interesting and a nice fresh breath of air from those becoming stale beauty and the beasts type of movies. I think one big reason I liked the movie was how they handled making King Bog and Marianne's blooming relationship feel so real, at least to me. They felt like real characters, with real legitimate issues that they both faced. They felt, to me at least, very relatable. Bog King felt that because of the way he looked to others that he could never be loved, he had crippling low self esteem. He so desperately wanted love from anyone that he made the horribly selfish decision to force a person to love him. Marianne thought the man she had been with for who knows how long truly loved her, she was blinded by rose tinted glasses only to be heavily let down by someone she truly loved. Which not only left her with trust issues, but also wounded her self esteem a bit as well. As goofy as this movie can be at times, Marianne and Bogs relationship feels really real. To me at least. I enjoyed it a lot.☺️💖

God, this movie is such a guilty pleasure for me-I love the animation on the wings and the style of the characters is so interesting to me because unlike most fairy movies, they don’t just look like humans with wings. Marianne and Bog King’s relationship is also pretty good, I like the villain falling in love trope and I love the fact that both of them look weird to each other, (as opposed to those movies where even though the main characters are different species, they both have the same standards of beauty and thus one feels like they’re hideous.) Sunny and Dawn though...definitely made me a little uncomfortable and made Sunny hard to sympathize with-which made him ending up with Dawn feel really really undeserving.

Serious answer: We can see "love potion" tropes as an allegory of "imposing change" for a relationship, lying about yourself or similar harmful and unhealthy situation. So yeah. Most relationships kinda are "love potions". Most of those " love potions" are even supported by society as a whole.

Personally I’d fix this movie’s weird handle of romance. Instead of Sunny being a simp and drugging Dawn to love him, Sunny and Dawn are in a sweet, cute relationship with one another. But because Dawn is a princess and Sunny is a lowly elf, they cannot go public with their affections. Instead of Roland giving Sunny the idea of the love potion, Roland uses Sunny and Dawn’s relationship as leverage to blackmail him into getting the love potion to use on whatever the main character’s name is. And another reviewer came up with this rewrite, but instead of Bog hating love because his love potion didn’t work, he hates it because he was potioned into a relationship he did not consent to. And therefore keeps the sugar plum fairy hostage as to not allow anyone else to suffer the same way.
Yeah, a story about two people from rivaling kingdoms, who swore off love forever, falling in love? I'm not much of a romance fan, but that doesn't sound like a bad plot to me

The hero falling in love with the villain is legit my shit. That was the subplot I was waiting for my entire life! And the fact that the villain actually didn't have that much characteristics that majority would consider "handsome/beautiful" was great. Heck, he only had baby blue eyes! Otherwise he was very lanky, rough at the edges with a long crooked nose... Needless to say, I really liked Bog King's character design. It works so well for the villain, but once we get to know him better and get past that... what's not to love?! The jukebox music I find problematic especially if a movie wants to aim to the international market, because those are songs everyone already knows in the original language which is English. It's so hard trying to translate and dub that into different languages without the song starting to sound odd and forced. The only time I've heard a famous song being used in a movie which was also translated and dubbed to country X's own language, was Shrek 2 when the fairy godmother sings _I Need a Hero._ And somehow it worked. No other jukebox songs from any Shrek movies were translated and dubbed, at least if I remember right. Surely most animated movies are produced in the USA and are mainly aimed for English speaking audiences, but if there is a possibility a movie could make it internationally, especially an animated family one, using jukebox music isn't the best idea. If the songs are not translated, many people will miss the meaning which connects the used song and a scene from the movie and if you try to translate it... Let's just say I'm not too keen on the idea of hearing Lady Gaga or Michael Jackson's songs translated to anything from English. It'd just feel weird.
i think Strange Magic is absolutely worth watching. It has some weird and experimental animation sequences in it that are interesting to watch, no matter if they turned out 'bad' or good. It's unique. And the blonde sister falling in love with the Bog King was such an unexpected twist that led to really weird and funny interactions. Also, the Bog King was SO fun to watch and see him fly and move and fight, ugh. His design is REALLY COOL to me, and he reminds me a bit of Cell from DragonBallZ with his human-insect body. I definitely recommend seeing the movie, for what it tried to do and for what it succeeded in. The movie does get kinda horny at the end though, which was awkward to watch with friends lmao.

I saw this on Disney channel a while back. I did like when MaryAnne sang "I'll never fall in love again" I felt that worked, I have a soft spot for that song. I love how she sang so sadly and then it turned into a power balad, and she kind transformed from girly day dreamer to warrior.
One of my most vivid memories is watching this movie at my aunts house on a rainy day while we were celebrating either new year or some relatives birthday and having to sit on my creepy uncles lap. I at the time, and still now enjoy the romance between the main 2 characters it felt refreshing for my 9 year old mind
I mean, it’s not that big of a deal. You shouldn’t worry about Rotten Tomatoes scores because some critics are biased when it comes to the tastes they enjoy. You should only have to worry about the audience scores and the Google ratings because those ratings are mainly what the audience thinks about the movie. Who cares if only 17% of critics found some freshness within the movie? Critics have different opinions about certain topics, especially fantasies. The audience score of 52% just means that 52% of the audience has rated the movie with 3.5 stars or more out of 5 stars, which isn’t very harsh at all. The Google rating, “85% liked this movie”, speaks for itself.

When I was a little girl I tried to watch Star Wars, and I fell to the ground, foaming at the mouth. When my 50 yr old dad tried, he was blinded and has never recovered. We should have known better.

I would have had Bog King's backstory be someone tried to use a love potion on him but it didn't work for some reason which would be better justification for his hatred for love and the potion.
Probably would've worked better too since the fact he also tried to force someone to love him through magic makes him just as bad as roland and sunny were in this movie for wanting to gleefully do the same thing. Bog isn't as bad as either of those characters but considering how the movie makes the love potions as being evil, it probably would've worked a ton better if bog's actual reason for hating it was due to being disgusted about someone trying to magically force him to love rather then because he didn't succeed in trying to make someone love him.

I love the fairy wings in this movie. They go from functional, expressive wings to flowy robes/cloaks and even though it doesnt make sense its sooooo fun to watch.

Kaleo Arnold maybe that was the ORIGINAL intended audience back when it came out in the 70’s but obviously was hit with ages and genders and became a worldwide phenomenon. And for Lucas to still be pushing the narrative that it is intended for 12 year old boys in this day and age is not only ignorant but strange given the fact that he knows how successful it became with all types of people.
I think I saw a trailer for this a while ago and then a month later, in a Walmart, saw the DVD box. I vividly remember it having three shots from the movie one on top of the other with the middle having either a tagline or a good review and the bottom having the title.
"Movie made for girls" Is a funny quote, since watching the movie feels like it had so much low effort in the writing I like tropes, but this fell into a bad pit of them where nothing was made to twist those tropes around, and all of the good and interesting designs was reserved to the dark forest, not the fairies (something that is stereotyped as "girly"). Which feels like a drawn out grind to the teeth cause it made caring for any of the plot dull. (Also it was a missed opportunity to make Sunny be the real villain of the story, that would have made his character far more interesting)
Ooh! I really like that idea! Yeah, I really wanted to like Sunny but the whole obsession with Dawn always made me really uncomfortable... Now I'm really wishing Sunny was the villain. Probably wouldn't have saved the movie but I agree, it definitely would have been a step up from what we got.
well, to be fair, (IIR) it is based upon the Shakespear play of "A Midsummer Night's Dream" and those romantic tropes abound, but I do like the twist where that dark haired fairy ends up with Oberon (but maybe I'm bias because I've always had a thing for Alan Cumming *the voice of Oberon in this* from seeing him in spy kids when I was a child. Lol!)
And even if Sunny hadn't been the villain, it really could have been a great exploration about this sort of mentality where you feel you're friendzoned and you end up in an echochamber that makes you bitter and in the end doesnt make anything better and lets you be manipulated, which was *bit* what they tried, I guess. Though I actually kinda liked Sunny, the position of "feeling entitled to get someone's love but realizing what he's trying to do is bad before he does it" is done so fast that there isn't any actual development there, and its just used for comic relief chase stuff for the rest of the movie, of which he's then rewarded for, which neither teaches any life lesson for younger viewers or is interesting to watch. Strange Magic frustrates me bevause the characters HAVE issues that I can see a lot of real people dealing with, like Sunny's frustration of friendzone, being cheated on, other people seeing relationships as transactions and not genuine, being bitter about love and wanting to avoid the stereotype of being seen as a naive girl who believes in sappy love, but then most of the runtime is being used for songs and stuff.
Really seened like he was stretching out the whole gIrlS CaN FiGHt tOo, thing and then realised I wait its not girly enough throw in some love bullshit in there.
Umm ngl. This whole Love Potion thing is kinda effed up. It really feels like a "forced consent" story. *"If you don't like me I'll basically force you to"* Maybe that's just me.
Everyone else: "Ohmygod this movie is so bad!", Me and my family: *laughing our asses off and jamming with the characters* I gotta be honest, I actually liked this one. I mean sure predictable as hell, music was basic too, but guess I'm a sucker for movies like this one?
I enjoyed it as well that I bought the DVD. I loved the song when the Bog King interrupted the Fairy's festival to give the news that he was humiliated.
Same here. This movie's a big guilty pleasure for me. It's not good. It has many great ideas and basically wastes all of them with a clumsy script, but it is at least entertaining. The musical numbers are creative and energized and the humor gets a good laugh out of me.

The wings are quite impressive design-wise. Having such huge butterfly wings that touch the ground is very cool. They're more difficult to animate and are more interesting as well.
I haven't seen the full film - Is there ever a morally positive reason mentioned for having/using the love potions? From this recap, it doesn't seem like it.
Kathryn S Dude, I ain’t watching this movie😂. But from the recap, it at least seems like the true bad guy is trying to use the potion to force the princess to love him. But it seems other characters have been doing the same thing on other people and they weren’t called out.
The only way I think of it being a "bad" thing if the key ingredient was also used in other potions and medicines. Since that wasn't brought up in the video, in led to assume primrose only has one use in universe.

Obviously, forcing someone to love someone else against their will is bad - Hell, they seem to hate the Imp whose entire purpose is to make random creatures fall in love - So, I was just wondering if the movie bothered to make an excuse for why the fairies making/using it was acceptable.

That right there has always been my favorite thing about this film. It's probably the first time I've seen an opposites attract story in a family film where neither love interest had to change his/her species to justify it.

This was my favourite movie of all time. Still is.
As a character designer, I really like the way the fairies' wings are animated, most people just have the wings flap and otherwise stay still, the way they bend and flex in this film looks so natural. Really they shouldn't have gone with such hyper realistic designs, but I really like the visuals besides that.
The wings are cool enough that I honestly want to cosplay marie-ann (even though its a legitimately poor film overall)
It was watchable... but oh did some scenes make you whole body cringe - some of the songs rang like a budget pantomime with their introduction into the story
Honestly, the only reason I watched that movie was because I saw two girls cosplay Marianne and Dawn, and both their character designs and wings looked so good. I still don't know whether I like or hate that movie, but the wings animation +insect creatures were great

What pisses me off about this movie is that the world building and premise have potential. Not only that, Marianne and Bog’s chemistry is absolutely brilliant. It absolutely feels 100% earned when they end up together in the end. The story should have been about them not everything else. George has good ideas but can never execute them well on his own.

I loved Marianne and Bogs chemistry but the constant songs were definitely tiring and the fact that they were covers didn’t help. The only singing scene I didn’t mind was when they sang Strange Magic since I thought it was really cute. I also don’t think Dawn and Sunny should have ended up together but if they had to at least have Sunny apologize for trying to use the potion on her. I wish they focused more on marianne and bogs relationship and how they feel like they can’t be together since they’re from different kingdoms. Overall it’s not the worst movie ever it definitely had good moments and I even laughed at some parts but the tropes and covers made me like it less

From 17:26 to 17:42, you mentioned that Roland’s design look like Prince Charming and sounds like Gaston. I’m glad you mentioned both Prince Charming and Gaston. Because there’s fun fact about the two of them(Gaston and Prince Charming), the thing is, Rupert Everett(the voice actor for Charming) auditioned for role of Gaston, but the directors said he didn’t sound arrogant enough. He remembered this when he was voicing Charming in Shrek 2. I should also mentioned the inspiration of Roland comes from Prince Hans of the Southern Isles(another Disney villain), he’s the guy who apparently love Anna but left her to freeze to death. Anyways, I feel like Roland reminds me of Prince Charming from Shrek 2 than Gaston and Hans altogether. In contrast, they’re both narcissistic, conceited, selfish, and think they can get what they wanted. Roland wanted to get marry with Marianne so he can have his free armies while Charming wanted to get marry with Fiona so he can become king. They both have sinister motives. The only differences is that Prince Charming is “mommy’s boy” while Roland is not. However, they’re still similar. Speaking of which, I see Marianne reminds of me of Princess Fiona from Shrek because they’re both strong, tough, and know how to put up a fight. Meanwhile, I see the Bog King as Shrek a little. They’re both single at the beginning and are grumpy at first sight. However, the differences the Bog King have servants and a mother who cares about the Bog King while Shrek doesn’t have anybody in the beginning. Sorry, Shrek. Actually, I feel Strange Magic reminds me of Shrek franchise characters. They both have similar message too which is loving someone on the inside and don’t judge their appearance that much.
Edit: Even though this is already edited, I should also mention that the Bog King’s mother is kind of like Donkey from Shrek. They’re both annoying but still give pretty good advice about love. Another fun fact: the Bog King’s mother is voiced by Maya Rudolph. She also happens to voice Rapunzel in Shrek The Third.
I just want to mention that the fairies/elves kingdom had something i had never seen before. female fairies with butterfly, shimmery gossamer, wings. While the males had moth wings, while still beautiful, they were dusty, fluffy and more dull in comparison.
Also, I hate Roland, but everything to do with his character felt perfect for the person he was meant to be. I was very happy that he wasn't a villian with just another redemption arc, glad he sucked from start to finish.

Fitting, funny, and a unique use for a well known song. Not just disrupting the movie to become a music video for several minutes.

That's one thing I will always give Lucas credit for; he doesn't do cash grabs. The original Star Wars films gave him enough "fuck you" money to do whatever he wanted, and you can tell everything he has done since were projects he was genuinely interested in making. They're not always *good,* but at least George has some integrity.

When I watched this the first time the movie buffered right as roland yelled go with the zoom in on his face. It stayed frozen that way for like 10 minutes it was so damn hilarious I still love that scene, thanks for making it a meme for me to laugh my ass off.
The fact that the physically unattractive character was nice on the inside, got a physically attractive romantic partner & a happy ending is exceptionally rare.
I really liked this film & although there were a lot of tropes overall it felt pretty fresh & unique.

Here's the thing about 'Strange Magic', it is solidly in the 'Cult Classic' category. It's not good enough to have done well with a mainstream audience, but it is good enough to have 'AN' audience. I know people who LOVE this movie, but it's not for everyone. It's definitely one of those where you have to watch it yourself and make your own judgement on it.
Well said! My friends are meh about this movie, but as someone who loves both fairy tales and upbeat musicals, Strange Magic is exactly what I want in an animated film. It feels like something was finally made especially for me, rather than to chase some popular but fleeting trend.

I actually loved this movie as a kid and only found it again a few years ago and I still love it even if there’s a lot that could be improved or fully changed

I love this movie the way one loves an f'd-up plushie that somehow made it to store shelves. Assessment: accurate. (Also I can say first hand that there is TONS of AO3 content for this movie, mostly about Bog and Marianne.)

Roland is one of the MANY reasons why Strange Magic is one of the worst creations in animation and the history of George Lucas (even by his standards).
My brain: Put the hound dog back in his blue suede shoes.
Strange magic was about as inspired by A Midsummer's Night Dream as West Side Story was inspired by Romeo and Juliet. In Sunny's defense he got tricked by Roland . Roland needed the love potion more than Sunny did.. The issue with the imp is that in the play he was a main character, Puck and an important part of the story plus my favorite character. He caused chaos with the love potion and he never really lost the potion like the imp did in the movie. I think it was never really consider that when you change the humans in the play into fairies and bog creatures you had to change Puck who was a fairy in the play into something else or he need to be an outsider to either kingdom. So when they made Puck an imp who only chittered and made others more responsible for the love potion. They took a bit of the reasoning behind the chaos of the love potion away and you miss Puck laughing at making people fall in love with those they dislike or making the "Roland" character falling in love with a donkey .
Are we not going to talk about how Marianne's dad kept trying to get her back with Roland, knowing that he cheated on her?
I dont think anyone knows he did? Marianne mentions "you cheated on me, remember?" but with a whisper and like she doesnt want others to know. Her sister also mentions she has no clue what happened but it had to be bad.

I may be a minority on this. I love this movie a lot! I thoureghly enjoy this interesting romantic movie so much!☺️💖 I think it is super interesting and a nice fresh breath of air from those becoming stale beauty and the beasts type of movies. I think one big reason I liked the movie was how they handled making King Bog and Marianne's blooming relationship feel so real, at least to me. They felt like real characters, with real legitimate issues that they both faced. They felt, to me at least, very relatable. Bog King felt that because of the way he looked to others that he could never be loved, he had crippling low self esteem. He so desperately wanted love from anyone that he made the horribly selfish decision to force a person to love him. Marianne thought the man she had been with for who knows how long truly loved her, she was blinded by rose tinted glasses only to be heavily let down by someone she truly loved. Which not only left her with trust issues, but also wounded her self esteem a bit as well. As goofy as this movie can be at times, Marianne and Bogs relationship feels really real. To me at least. I enjoyed it a lot.☺️💖

I agree, Strange Magic was a great but unpopular film. I rented the film and my sister and I loved it. Saber should be kinder to it.
God, this movie is such a guilty pleasure for me-I love the animation on the wings and the style of the characters is so interesting to me because unlike most fairy movies, they don’t just look like humans with wings.
Marianne and Bog King’s relationship is also pretty good, I like the villain falling in love trope and I love the fact that both of them look weird to each other, (as opposed to those movies where even though the main characters are different species, they both have the same standards of beauty and thus one feels like they’re hideous.) Sunny and Dawn though...definitely made me a little uncomfortable and made Sunny hard to sympathize with-which made him ending up with Dawn feel really really undeserving.

Personally I’d fix this movie’s weird handle of romance. Instead of Sunny being a simp and drugging Dawn to love him, Sunny and Dawn are in a sweet, cute relationship with one another. But because Dawn is a princess and Sunny is a lowly elf, they cannot go public with their affections. Instead of Roland giving Sunny the idea of the love potion, Roland uses Sunny and Dawn’s relationship as leverage to blackmail him into getting the love potion to use on whatever the main character’s name is.
And another reviewer came up with this rewrite, but instead of Bog hating love because his love potion didn’t work, he hates it because he was potioned into a relationship he did not consent to. And therefore keeps the sugar plum fairy hostage as to not allow anyone else to suffer the same way.
That would’ve been a more interesting plot actually

The hero falling in love with the villain is legit my shit. That was the subplot I was waiting for my entire life! And the fact that the villain actually didn't have that much characteristics that majority would consider "handsome/beautiful" was great. Heck, he only had baby blue eyes! Otherwise he was very lanky, rough at the edges with a long crooked nose... Needless to say, I really liked Bog King's character design. It works so well for the villain, but once we get to know him better and get past that... what's not to love?!
The jukebox music I find problematic especially if a movie wants to aim to the international market, because those are songs everyone already knows in the original language which is English. It's so hard trying to translate and dub that into different languages without the song starting to sound odd and forced. The only time I've heard a famous song being used in a movie which was also translated and dubbed to country X's own language, was Shrek 2 when the fairy godmother sings _I Need a Hero._ And somehow it worked. No other jukebox songs from any Shrek movies were translated and dubbed, at least if I remember right. Surely most animated movies are produced in the USA and are mainly aimed for English speaking audiences, but if there is a possibility a movie could make it internationally, especially an animated family one, using jukebox music isn't the best idea. If the songs are not translated, many people will miss the meaning which connects the used song and a scene from the movie and if you try to translate it... Let's just say I'm not too keen on the idea of hearing Lady Gaga or Michael Jackson's songs translated to anything from English. It'd just feel weird.

i think Strange Magic is absolutely worth watching. It has some weird and experimental animation sequences in it that are interesting to watch, no matter if they turned out 'bad' or good. It's unique. And the blonde sister falling in love with the Bog King was such an unexpected twist that led to really weird and funny interactions. Also, the Bog King was SO fun to watch and see him fly and move and fight, ugh. His design is REALLY COOL to me, and he reminds me a bit of Cell from DragonBallZ with his human-insect body. I definitely recommend seeing the movie, for what it tried to do and for what it succeeded in.
The movie does get kinda horny at the end though, which was awkward to watch with friends lmao.
This movie felt like an attempt at re-imagining Fern Gully through the lens of Shrek when I watched it.

I saw this on Disney channel a while back. I did like when MaryAnne sang "I'll never fall in love again" I felt that worked, I have a soft spot for that song. I love how she sang so sadly and then it turned into a power balad, and she kind transformed from girly day dreamer to warrior.

One of my most vivid memories is watching this movie at my aunts house on a rainy day while we were celebrating either new year or some relatives birthday and having to sit on my creepy uncles lap. I at the time, and still now enjoy the romance between the main 2 characters it felt refreshing for my 9 year old mind

Who cares if only 17% of critics found some freshness within the movie? Critics have different opinions about certain topics, especially fantasies.
The audience score of 52% just means that 52% of the audience has rated the movie with 3.5 stars or more out of 5 stars, which isn’t very harsh at all.
The Google rating, “85% liked this movie”, speaks for itself.

I would have had Bog King's backstory be someone tried to use a love potion on him but it didn't work for some reason which would be better justification for his hatred for love and the potion.
Probably would've worked better too since the fact he also tried to force someone to love him through magic makes him just as bad as roland and sunny were in this movie for wanting to gleefully do the same thing.
Bog isn't as bad as either of those characters but considering how the movie makes the love potions as being evil, it probably would've worked a ton better if bog's actual reason for hating it was due to being disgusted about someone trying to magically force him to love rather then because he didn't succeed in trying to make someone love him.

I think I saw a trailer for this a while ago and then a month later, in a Walmart, saw the DVD box. I vividly remember it having three shots from the movie one on top of the other with the middle having either a tagline or a good review and the bottom having the title.

I like tropes, but this fell into a bad pit of them where nothing was made to twist those tropes around, and all of the good and interesting designs was reserved to the dark forest, not the fairies (something that is stereotyped as "girly"). Which feels like a drawn out grind to the teeth cause it made caring for any of the plot dull.
(Also it was a missed opportunity to make Sunny be the real villain of the story, that would have made his character far more interesting)
Ooh! I really like that idea! Yeah, I really wanted to like Sunny but the whole obsession with Dawn always made me really uncomfortable... Now I'm really wishing Sunny was the villain. Probably wouldn't have saved the movie but I agree, it definitely would have been a step up from what we got.
well, to be fair, (IIR) it is based upon the Shakespear play of "A Midsummer Night's Dream" and those romantic tropes abound, but I do like the twist where that dark haired fairy ends up with Oberon (but maybe I'm bias because I've always had a thing for Alan Cumming *the voice of Oberon in this* from seeing him in spy kids when I was a child. Lol!)

And even if Sunny hadn't been the villain, it really could have been a great exploration about this sort of mentality where you feel you're friendzoned and you end up in an echochamber that makes you bitter and in the end doesnt make anything better and lets you be manipulated, which was *bit* what they tried, I guess.
Though I actually kinda liked Sunny, the position of "feeling entitled to get someone's love but realizing what he's trying to do is bad before he does it" is done so fast that there isn't any actual development there, and its just used for comic relief chase stuff for the rest of the movie, of which he's then rewarded for, which neither teaches any life lesson for younger viewers or is interesting to watch.
Strange Magic frustrates me bevause the characters HAVE issues that I can see a lot of real people dealing with, like Sunny's frustration of friendzone, being cheated on, other people seeing relationships as transactions and not genuine, being bitter about love and wanting to avoid the stereotype of being seen as a naive girl who believes in sappy love, but then most of the runtime is being used for songs and stuff.
Really seened like he was stretching out the whole gIrlS CaN FiGHt tOo, thing and then realised I wait its not girly enough throw in some love bullshit in there.

Same here. This movie's a big guilty pleasure for me. It's not good. It has many great ideas and basically wastes all of them with a clumsy script, but it is at least entertaining. The musical numbers are creative and energized and the humor gets a good laugh out of me.

The wings are quite impressive design-wise. Having such huge butterfly wings that touch the ground is very cool. They're more difficult to animate and are more interesting as well.

I haven't seen the full film - Is there ever a morally positive reason mentioned for having/using the love potions? From this recap, it doesn't seem like it.
Kathryn S Dude, I ain’t watching this movie😂. But from the recap, it at least seems like the true bad guy is trying to use the potion to force the princess to love him. But it seems other characters have been doing the same thing on other people and they weren’t called out.
The only way I think of it being a "bad" thing if the key ingredient was also used in other potions and medicines. Since that wasn't brought up in the video, in led to assume primrose only has one use in universe.

I was just curious if anyone else who had seen it remembered if the movie gave any reason at all for why love potions are /good/. Obviously, forcing someone to love someone else against their will is bad - Hell, they seem to hate the Imp whose entire purpose is to make random creatures fall in love - So, I was just wondering if the movie bothered to make an excuse for why the fairies making/using it was acceptable.
