Strange World has a story with a strange story connected to it. Being essentially shoved under the rug by the marketing team, and yet, top of DisneyPlus when released there. It's an alright movie. In fact, I was swooning over it first time watching. With a world that is incredibly interesting and satisfying to see unfold. But the plot? The story? Absolutely not my thing. Still! Let's digest the best scene in the movie! The one that sparks the most intrigue and shows just how good the world of Strange World is, and how poor the plotline is... I will admit that while this movie wasn’t that great; the twist was definitely surprising that this whole time, they were inside a giant turtle, and all those creatures and locations shown in the “strange world” was the turtle’s insides and system!
I wanted to see more of the creature tbh. It's so fascinating.
It was something no one would have guessed.
And that why I love turtles.
it also makes for a good rewatch once you know the twist too. It's cool to see how that made the "alien creatures" into the part of the turtle's inside.
Its sad they forced the generational trauma in this story... The Strabge world was enought
It's a shame that the marketing for this movie was basically non-existent. It's a fairly enjoyable pulp adventure flick with likeable characters and a pretty good twist. And man, that creature and it's insides were absolutely beautiful. _Encanto_ definitely did the generational trauma thing better though.

I will say I called the whole “they are actually inside an animal” twist at the start. Everything just gave me that vibe and sort of reminded me of that one Magic School Bus episode. I remember telling my mom my theory a few minutes after they entered the caves. Feels good to be right for once, but it was a good twist that was executed in a well done and gorgeous manner.
Love how this movie feels like on of those old adventure comics from the 1950s or 60s. Especially the reveal of the world being on the back of a huge creature.
I like the twist. It could’ve been explored more with a sequel and a Disney Plus show. But since the movie was a flop and had a terrible marketing, we might never see that unfortunately...

I honestly loved the movie. I kept laughing when Searcher kept imagining his son like his father. It also got me a bit emotional since I could relate to the struggles Ethan and his father had like me and my mom.

While the Movie wasn’t as Bad as Ralph breaks the Internet,Frozen 2,and Raya and the Last Dragon,Strange World is one of Disney’s Most Boring Films and the Promotion was Terrible,Lightyear is still Better than this.
Strange world wasn't a bad movie but there were some scenes that did feel a bit forced. Other than that it's still enjoyable. I feel like it's going through the same thing Atlantis and treasure planet went through where they weren't box office successes but still have their fans.

Tbh I feel like the reason it’s so basic and generic is because of the previous ceo before being let go hate for cartoons saying their for babies and I think it really showed in this, a basic kid movie with a lot of promise, I hope they do more and expand but in my honest opinion it was the ceo being like “cartoons are for babies and no adults just watch cartoons.”
Yeah it was also a bit tone deaf in regards to the fact that films such as Inside Out and Zootopia while being okay for kids for the most part do address serious issues such as growing up, depression, prejudice, etc.
And both rightfully won the Oscar
I have to wonder HOW he got to be a CEO, of a company whose mascot is a cartoon. Not to mention, how blind a statement like that is, considering classical cartoon/animated movies that are made well, are still popular today. To me, that's 101 dalmations primarily, but there are more. The movie had a interesting plot, and thorough the mo ie was fun and somewhat chaotic, with Emporer's New Groove, or whatever the first one is called, also being a classic movie, but very fun and chaotic. These are movies from my childhood, probably produced before my age by a few years, and i still watch them. And as a adult, i keep an eye out for more animated movies than real people. Though, to be fair, due to my autism, its hard for me to pick out emotions on a real person's face, and easier to figure out with a animated character what theyre feeling.
Not that you have to, but have you done Encanto yet? I'd like to see your view on that movie. I love it personally, 17:17 although I do agree that, since, then, at least, Disney has overuse the generational trauma trope, I still really like it.

Strange World was exactly like Avatar in that respect. A REALLY interesting world with so much potential... wasted on a tired old tale with nothing but tropes
In Avatar, it was just Dances with Wolves and Pocahontas ... wet in a really cool world

i'm gonna be honest... I LOVED THIS MOVIE. I LOVE IT WITH ALL MY HEART AND IT IS THE LITERAL TEXTBOOK DEFINITION OF "UNAPPRECIATED" AND "UNDERRATED". THE WORLD BUILDING, THE CHARACTERS, THE ANIMATION, THE STORY, THE EMOTION AND THE ENDING (i swear that when i first saw it i did not expect the turtle twist). I FREAKING LOVE THIS MOVIE AND I WISH IT GOT MORE ATTENTION

I think one main problem of this movie is that it didn't put enough emphasis on the environmental message. Sure, the massive Turtle was dying, but there were no signs of any implications of that. The only thing that was acknowledged was the fact that Pando was dying and no other consequences were explored. For example, what if the plants on the surface began to die as a result of the Turtle's ailment, or that the ground has begun to shake as the Turtle began to weaken? I feel this would have had a much more meaningful message than just the intrinsic right for thr creature to live, which I understand is a meaningful message but it will never hit as hard as the idea of self preservation.
I'm not saying we shouldn't believe in creatures' intrinsic beauty or right to live, but when we think of ourselves as a species, we're not gonna destroy the planet. Sure, we may drive ourselves to extinction and take many other species with us, but the vast majority of life will survive and go on, maybe evolving into some other variation of humans, so we should really focus on saving the planet for ourselves more than anything, because if we do that we'll automatically restore much of the world ecosystem, and save our skin in the process.
But I'm assuming Disney didn't do this because let's be honest they don't really care, and were probably tipped off by massive corporations which don't want change, because money is everything in the Corporate world.
Eh but who am I, I'm just a Gen-Z who can't stop scrolling tiktok and playing those darn video games, what do I know...
I loved this movie but something that really got me to immediately know it was going to "generally disliked" was how 'tropey' and 'predictably unpredictable' it was. Every step I knew what was going to happen next, which probably just means the writers were really good at bold foreshadowing and it's a case of me having watched way too many family movies
I think a way this movie could have worked really well was slow reveal dramatic irony. Like humans with human stuff exploring a non-human world that turns out to be a big creature is cool, but what if the characters looked like they were something smaller. What if they had insect like features, or were some kind of small mammal like creature. Make it so the audience figures out they're inside a giant creature before the characters do. And also the revelation that the power source was a parasite should've come a bit later. Like as they get back into the creature, they realize one of these things is not like the other. Because both "twists" lose emphasis when they're back to back. We don't get to dwell on the implications of the first before we're instantly introduced to the other, we don't get to come to that conclusion ourselves.
Eh, I wouldn't say it's underrated more like it hadn't found it's audience. Personally it doesn't do things too well to hold my attention or memory and the twist has been done similarly in better ways imo. If there was an argument about a movie with little to no marketing I'd say look at puss in boots 2, I've never even seen a trailer about it, but word of mouth, online reviews and just random videos on social media convinced me to watch it and it was great. I, sadly, never thought too much of this movie and even tried looking at reviews to see if I could be wrong, but it seemed lack luster. The twist was interesting but I'd rather read the mythology of us living on a turtle's back or something
I still think it’s weird to hear that there was no marketing for this movie. This movie was absolutely shoved down my throat for advertisement, so much so I got tired of seeing it. To hear others didn’t see hide nor hair of it is shocking to me.
I only saw one trailer that was designed to look like one of those old-school trailers, but then never saw or heard from it again until it started bombing

My biggest gripe with this movie is not even anything relating to characters or story writing at all. It's just that it.. kinda swiped a super massive and unique detail from a story I've been working on for years before its release. A gigantic, island-like turtle, albeit not really one that has a "strange world" inside of it, it's moreso a strange world on its back, because admittedly I was never creative enough to come up with a whole, weird-ass bundle of biomes INSIDE the turtle.. Also, my turtle creature DWARFS this one, it's more like the size of the continent of Africa.. And I'm a little irritated that people who read this story when I publish it someday might be like "O did you get inspiration from Strange World?" NO. Absolutely not..
Bruh, what are you talking about, this movie was unpopular. I am sure a good amount of people liked it, but stop acting like no one knew about it. Plus when you look at something like Encanto, that was at the top of Disney Plus for like months, where Strange World was probably at the top for like what, 2 weeks?
Update: I just check it, and Encanto is there now! Even Cars, which is not such a popular movie compared to something like Toy Story, is there!!!
Encanto has always been on the trending tab on d+ I think strange world was there for 2 weeks but that’s pretty bad considering encanto released to streaming december 2021

It’s so sad how amazing this movie could’ve been if they had just made the grandpa actually evil. He had so much potential for an alright twist villain. And I do love this movie, I think it’s good but it could’ve been great if it had a villain. Heck it could’ve been on Encanto’s level! Like if they played into the grandpa’s manipulative side and made his goal to split Ethan and Searcher apart they could’ve had a villain and had some form of generational trauma.
I found the movie ok and it is cool to see how they turned the turtles inside into alien creatures. Plus once you the twist you can back and tell which part of the turtle they are in by the creature. I.E. the lake of acid is the turtle stomach acid.

I have never heard of this movie before seeing it on my Disney+ recommendations last night, and it was amazing.
I don’t know why the reviews are so bad. It’s honestly fantastic and the slow reveal of what the world really is was done super well. It added a whole extra layer mystery that was super intriguing.

I dunno if I can pinpoint the why but I really dislike the design, I just find the characters really unappealing design wise. The blobby rounded looking faces might be part of the way to describe why I don't like the look. Clown noses?
Throughout the movie, I thought creature design was plain and simple just a sphere with many leg and tentacle and after the reveal scene My mind just went "wow that actully make sense"
Also, I watched it after I read a review because I have an 'I have to see it with my own eyes before I judge it' attitude and to be honest I really liked the world setting and mechanics design. despite a cliche plot, this movie is enjoyable on some level.

This movie is so better than what Rotten Tomato told me! It had the best moments, and what was better was that it was a Disney movie! You guys should watch it.

That turtle is a prime example of an Eldritch Abomination that isn't seen as such. How long until the community worships it, don't they do something like that in the final scene? How long until people stare at its eye and go mad?

The thing that bugs me so much with this movie is that the environmental message messes up everything all over the place. To name a few, you can't trust an immune system to know what to do when auto immune disorders are so common. Anyone who has an allergy is also someone whose immune system attacks itself, so just because they are attacking the pando doesn't mean it's evil which is why you need to take your time to understand what's wrong befor getting involved jumping in to earlyand thinking you know best is how you mess up environments even with the best intentions. A creature of this size would almost certainly have electrical signals as part of its body so pando and the heart seemed like the brain to me and when they destroyed it we thought it was finally being smart but know they were right and it was the problem all along and just needed to be destroyed when they knew nothing about it for sure because they had done literally zero testing.
That discord noise was rude. Totally made me have to check.

i can understand where this movie is coming from cause i have a father that is controlling in how he expects me to live my life and mother that is controlling in what i believe. but they do this in a annoying overdone way in terms of the dialog.

People may attribute that it's lack of success is due to the lack of marketing, but I digress. Yes, the lack of marketing definitely affected it, but overall the story wasn't very good. Both audience and critic reviews were subpar and terrible. Meaning, even people who watched it, generally didn't like it. It's also the first Disney movie to get a B review which is just sad. I can only say at most that the movie was okay, but it's really not worth the while unless somehow the movie is niche to your taste. There was also the representation package. I think it's more than just the gay characters. His crush didn't even go with him on the trip, which ruined the development. Not only that. Not only is the main character gay, his parents are an interracial couple, and their dog is disabled. It's literally full on woke representation. Some people just don't like that. It doesn't matter if you don't care about it, it's what the people care. Evidently, most people dont like that woke shit. However, you can still watch it if you really want to. After all, every bad movie has its fans and every good movie has its haters.
It's 2023, I can't believe that both racism and homophobia are still a thing. What a sad world we live in.
"Anti-woke" people are annoying. They spend their life on Twitter complaining about other people's business. They can leave as many negative comments as they want, their opinion doesn't matter. I'm sure this movie would have a good review if it wasn't for them.

The CRITIC review was crap. The AUDIENCE review was ALSO crap.
There are plenty of other gay movies that have success such as Brokeback Mountain and Call Me By Your Name.
Also, surprise surprise, people actually like characters that are relatable. The characters are not relatable, as mentioned before, its a mashup of all the disable,d interracial and gay all in one package. The movie was more dedicated to the cause of representation than a coherent plot.
In conclusion, the movie failed because frankly, audiences are unable to relate and the plot was weak. It isn't a case of "critics" being wrong. It was just subpar. I admit the movie was better than I thought but thats probably because I already had a poor expectation.
As I said on the last sentence, every bad movie has its fans and every good movie has its haters. Perhaps you are a fan of this movie, and thats fine too, but that would indeed be an unpopular opinion.

I know that everyone has their own opinions but god damn this movie might just be the most laziest, empty, and just all around worst movie I have ever seen, so much so that I cannot wrap my head around the idea that people actually like this *thing*.
I have seen people say this about other movies that are mediocre or just bad and I usually keep positive mind that you can't really say that because you have to understand that everyone has an opinion and being that angry about a movie just seems pointless. I have never really "hated" or "despised" a movie before, I just say I don't like a movie and move on. If I like a movie or don't like a movie that's ok, if you like or don't like that movie that's also ok. Im not going to go ballistic over and opinion on a movie, as long as you have a reasoning behind it and not just hating to be hating that's cool.
Strange World is not a good movie. There is nothing good about Strange World, and I'll tell you why. First of the characters are incredibly stupid and boring, the "Strange World" is literally just a bunch of ugly blobs, the characters look stupid and is a significantly down grade to the already uninspired modern Disney and Pixar characters, the plot is mindnumpingly boring and can be told in one sentence without missing any of the few important details, and the only reason why this movie is getting is by the people who see queer character representation and think that's enough to consider it a good movie, and people like Ben Shitpero who have a heart attack at the near mention of lgbtqrstuvwxyz and immediately call it "woke" or "pandering". Representation has and should have nothing to do with whether a movie is good or not and the fact that people are so fixated with this mindset that they ignore anything else about this movie is completely bonkers.
I know that this reply is just a huge tangent and I didn't even elaborate on any of the points that I made but man I hate this movie so much and I just had to get this of my chest so I can just forget about this pile of crap that is this movie.

The one thing I heard negatively about this movie was the fact that the Dad and the Grandfather didn't question why the son was gay.. basically those people wanted these characters to be homophpbic
They were upset that there was nothing else beside one guy having a crush on another...they were hoping for a scene the 2 kissed and had sex so they could cry about how it's forcing kids into a gay lifestyle and drives them further away from god and how gays sexualize kids... but nope it's nothing more than "he has a crush on a guy" 😂

I mean THE WORLDBUILDING IS FRICKEN AMAZING (in my opinion) to me it’s literally the best world building ever made ever, other than that this film isn’t underrated, the world building really saved it for me, a random member of the public whose opinion can’t and won’t make a difference
