    Goodness! Just realized you could use the assignable controllers basically like accumulators on the Metropolix either Pam’s or self patching (which is genius as you could have so much more control over it). I’m into this!

    As I have been considering this module I was thinking in terms of overlap with my Keystep Pro, so your comment about using the Keystep to change sequences on the Stillson was quite revelatory. Thanks from me, but not from my wallet. :)

    Dude thank you so much for this video. I just got my Stillson MK2 this week and have watched this video several times now to keep reinforcing some of the buttons combos. It has been immensely helpful and your overview is to the point but gave me all the info I needed to get this thing grooving. Really happy with this sequencer so far as it gives me the kind of immediacy I've really only gotten out of the SQ1 up until now, looking forward to see what Scot plans to do with MK3 later this year.

    This demystifies this module so much! Thank you for this! I’ve always wondered why it’s noted as such a powerful sequencer as when looking at the faceplate, I’m left scratching my head a bit. The user flow seems so fast and so much of the editing is done with the sliders! I love that! Kinda where something like the metropolix is different. The light indicators here also make a lot of sense. I haven’t got to the end of the video yet but my only wonder is if the reset can be selective in terms of which track it’s resetting. Not as common a use case I’m sure but when getting into different length patterns you could want one pattern reset while the rest continue. Anyway, I’ll look at this one when I get to a battleship sequencer. Seems to tick so many boxes in such a simple way like ratchets and repeats. Pair this with a simple 8 step sequencer and I’d probably be set.

      @@apeirogonmusic Absolutely agree with you, we found their tutorial extremely helpful as we were learning the ins and outs of the Stillson Hammer! Different people have different styles of learning though, and we noticed a lot of comments on Robotopsy's video complaining about being unable to focus on the tutorial due to the robotic voice. Since their tutorial was the only one of that caliber and level of thoroughness out there by far, we decided that there should be another tutorial done with natural voice, that way everyone can learn to the best of their abilities =)

    So really the only confusing thing on the panel seems to be how to use 4 tracks given there is just one set of sliders, and this is not explained at all in the video? I assume the steps change only if you touch a slider, but it sounds messy that you never know what the state of a track is by looking at the panel? I don't get it.

    • @bleepsandloops
      @bleepsandloops  4 роки тому +2

      My vote is for the Stillson, hands down, though maybe I'm biased =) More CV/Gate outputs, a little more of a live, "playable" feel...the ratcheting is a bit easier to dial in on the Metropolis, but I don't think that alone makes it more worth it. Even if your system only has a single voice in it (I usually am using only 2 at a time max), then having the extra CV/Gate outputs is really nice for drum/env triggering and modulation. Lately I've been using the stillson strictly as a modulation sequencer, actually, since I've been doing most of my sequencing via the DAW or Octatrack

In fact, i actually know how, i just need to buy a Mickit key ( what is some kind of difficult in france) and do it. To my opinion this is the only wrong point on this sequencer.

    Thanks for making this very helpful video. Question for you... I'd like to create parts of a song and transition through them on the SA. My thought was to use track 1 as the beginning, 2 as the verse, 3 as the chorus and 4 as the end. Couple things Ive noticed though is how to stop and start a track. I can mute but it seems that all tracks start when pressing play and if I unmute, the respective track is heard where it is in the steps at the time. Is there a way to play 1 track at a time and have a track start at the first step of its sequence? I want to be able to go back and forth between verse and chorus before playing the end. A typical song structure.

    • @helloego
      @helloego 3 роки тому +1

      Hi Brian, this is John from Bleeps+Loops. As far as I know, there is no way to play/stop the different tracks individually, they're all going to play when you press "run". However, you can achieve what you're trying to do through the presets. It's a bit more fiddly than just switching between outputs, but not so bad when you get the hang of it. I used to switch between presets as a way of switching from song to song or section to section. One important thing to note is that the presets will switch based on when channel 1 returns to step 1, so you have to keep/consider channel 1 to be the "master clock" for when your presets change. For example, if you switch the preset while the channel 1 sequencer is on step 8, you'll have to wait for it to count through steps 9-16 for the preset to actually switch. This can be very useful when trying to keep the song structure, and will help you avoid accidentally switching in the middle of a phrase. Hopefully that helps, please feel free to reach out with other questions.

    • @blindianajones
      @blindianajones 3 роки тому +1

      @@helloego I may have to be more loose with each song vs a rigid structure. I've been getting comfortable with using the voltage range buttons, muting tracks and using the assignable A and B knobs. Those all offer a lot of variety bt not a way to perform predefined sections per song. Seems like the best thing to do is program gates and cv per track and use each track as the beginning of a song, then perform or modify throughout the song, then mute that one when done and unmute another track when ready for a new song. Or maybe I could get a crossfader module to transition between two tracks.

    • @helloego
      @helloego 3 роки тому +1

      @@blindianajones Yeah, you might be right. To be honest, as much as I love the Stillson Hammer, I found it much more useful as a source of happy accidents in a track rather than a tool with which to write songs, structured or otherwise. My suggestion to you would be to look at other sequencers such as the USTA which include features that are more geared towards sequencing songs. Trying to force modules to do things they weren't built to do will only make it all a bit harder on yourself than it needs to be. You'll end up spending more time, frustration, and money on more modules to attempt to enable or modify the behavior of the other modules than it's worth (like that crossfader), take it from someone who did specifically that for years :)

    • @blindianajones
      @blindianajones 3 роки тому +2

      @@helloego Totally agree with you about not forcing something to work or be something its not. Gonna check out the USTA. The Five12 and ER101 look like they could work for parts too. I do love the ease of performing with the SA. I dont find just setting and forgetting values step by step inspirational or fun. The expressive interaction makes the whole endeavor worth while.

Or something on the Hammer I need to do? Thanks!
