I cant remember if it had a Giraffe or a Hakosuka, but i remember this day. We drove in a 1970 4door Bamboo tan Datsun 510 which we still own to this day. I know this is 9 years too late, but sorry for getting in your video so much 😅 My dad had the beard, was in camo cargo shorts, and had a DSPORT shirt, and I was that little kid. I loved this car as soon as I saw it because I watched Initial D with my dad, and I fell in love with JDM cars, and I still do to this day.

The reason we got the “body swapped Z4” is because Toyota learned its lesson on the MKIV Supra, which was a sales disappointment in America in the 1990’s. And cost Toyota a FORTUNE to make. That was back when Toyota had other cars that could use a longitudinal inline 6 like the Chaser, Aristo, Soarer, etc. Today, because most engines are transversely mounted for FWD-biased cars, there’s no room to engine swap an I-6 inside. So the Supra I-6 would have to be a one-off and VERY pricey.
Does anyone appreciate how well refined this car is? So few gaps.. everything is incorporated in to each other. You can just tell this is a cleverly assembled car.

Though there is supposedly 3 trim levels offered so I am not sure which trim was referenced to the price estimate. 4cyl turbo around 260hp, Inline 6 turbo around 330hp, and top trim is a inline 6 turbo with electric drive motors for zero turbo lag performance and estimated 370hp. I would imagine the top tier trim, if the cost is 6 figures, would give more HP or better power to weight ratio to compete with the current GTR and future NSX. Since these (Supra TT, GTR, NSX, 3000GT VR4, 300zTT, Stealth RT, EVO&STI, base 911, and a few more im sure) had similar power and performance figures in the 90s, it would only make sense to make the "predecessor" of the Supra with the equal or greater performance than current variations of the cars above. Toyota has the BRS (FRS/BRZ/86), so if the FT1 is released, i would imagine its power and price tag to be above the STI but below the Lexus FLA. So, 70k more or less wouldnt be a shock.
The Supra was a one up from the Celica of the 90s to compete with the C4 Vette. At the time, the GT-R was way ahead of these two from factory. Today, Corvette at least the C7s, (don't care for C8s) and the FT-1 could've been the car to take on Corvette again and lose again, but at least it's a fantastic looking concept. The GT-R is falling behind again. Thankfully, the fanboy stuff is finally dying down on the GT-R while people who never owned a car think the new supra miata is "fast" because of the overrated name. I would say it has had a great production run and broad respect from the automotive community due to its insane supercar like capabilities. Why would "cost" matter if they were going to make a new car smaller and slower than the one from the 90 and price it at $50,000?. That's literally not enough car for the price and it's not even good-looking. That's like paying $16 for a bowl of Mac n Cheese. There's just things you DON'T do. The Supra MK.IV was a one up from the Celica and made to compete against the C4 vette, not the GT-R. But the vette has came a long way since then and I don't see why the FT-1 couldn't have been the car to do it again. This design you don't just throw away, but they did. It's just a shame. It could've possibly beat out the GT-R since it's falling behind and we already have Corvettes production faster than the R35s.

Toyota themselves said FT-1 stands for "Future Toyota Mark 1" its a concept name for a concept car... When this is put into production the name will change with whatever else Toyota decides to change because no concept-to-production stays the same.
lol. Well, Nissan called their new high-end sports car "GTR" instead of "Skyline" like it was so famously known as before, and it's doing just fine. Whether or not it's called a Supra in the end, it won't be called FT1 when it gets to production. It just doesn't have an official name yet.
Along with all the other replies, I wanted to add that the engineers and higher ups at Toyota wanted to make it very clear that this car is not meant to be a successor, reiteration, or re-creation to/of any of their previous cars. It is meant to be a completely new concept, completely new idea, and something completely of it's own. I highly doubt that they will name it "Supra" or anything relateable to any of their other cars.
yeah the designer (the one who was driving the car) said that it was plastic. There was a switch under the dash that controlled whether if it went into forward or reverse.

Tommy Walls there has been 13 years since the supra stopped being made in Japan. Since then Things have changed in the automotive world a LOT. This obviously won't be the finished product. But overall they want a 100K car in competition range of the GTR, 458 ect. Its supposed to be the future of Toyota not the past.
I just recently read in a recent car magazine (Oct. 2018) the CEO of Toyota was interviewed about this BMW Z4/Toyota Supra & he said it was designed & built for the previous Supra's 2JZ engine to be easily swapped in... We'll see.. I wonder if the actual production version will look exactly like this prototype.. I saw some recent pictures of test mules of it in camouflage & it looked like a FR-S/BR-Z, also in size.. Hope that wasn't true!

Wow! My only question is how do the tires not rub the fenders? There is absolutely no clearance! The suspension being rigid enough to prevent wheel rub at such close proximity to the fenders, it must be an incredibly rough ride!

Why would "cost" matter if they were going to make a new car smaller and slower than the one from the 90 and price it at $50,000?. That's literally not enough car for the price and it's not even good-looking.
That's like paying $16 for a bowl of Mac n Cheese. There's just things you DON'T do.
The Supra MK.IV was a one up from the Celica and made to compete against the C4 vette, not the GT-R.
But the vette has came a long way since then and I don't see why the FT-1 couldn't have been the car to do it again. This design you don't just throw away, but they did. It's just a shame.
It could've possibly beat out the GT-R since it's falling behind and we already have Corvettes production faster than the R35s.

Toyota themselves said FT-1 stands for "Future Toyota Mark 1" its a concept name for a concept car... When this is put into production the name will change with whatever else Toyota decides to change because no concept-to-production stays the same.

lol. Well, Nissan called their new high-end sports car "GTR" instead of "Skyline" like it was so famously known as before, and it's doing just fine. Whether or not it's called a Supra in the end, it won't be called FT1 when it gets to production. It just doesn't have an official name yet.

Along with all the other replies, I wanted to add that the engineers and higher ups at Toyota wanted to make it very clear that this car is not meant to be a successor, reiteration, or re-creation to/of any of their previous cars. It is meant to be a completely new concept, completely new idea, and something completely of it's own. I highly doubt that they will name it "Supra" or anything relateable to any of their other cars.

yeah the designer (the one who was driving the car) said that it was plastic. There was a switch under the dash that controlled whether if it went into forward or reverse.

If the specs are correct on this car it has no chance in beating a gtr. Hopefully they put in at least 3.0 liters or above if it's given the supra badge

Tommy Walls there has been 13 years since the supra stopped being made in Japan. Since then Things have changed in the automotive world a LOT. This obviously won't be the finished product. But overall they want a 100K car in competition range of the GTR, 458 ect. Its supposed to be the future of Toyota not the past.

I just recently read in a recent car magazine (Oct. 2018) the CEO of Toyota was interviewed about this BMW Z4/Toyota Supra & he said it was designed & built for the previous Supra's 2JZ engine to be easily swapped in... We'll see.. I wonder if the actual production version will look exactly like this prototype.. I saw some recent pictures of test mules of it in camouflage & it looked like a FR-S/BR-Z, also in size.. Hope that wasn't true!
