I kid you not, i am that kid at the beginning of the video. I'm on my dad's shoulders, and it was one of the most magical days of my life. I used to go to that show, every, single, weekend. It was less than 15 minutes from my apartment in Foothill Ranch. I get so many memories flooding whenever i see this video. I remember my dad told me, "This is the only time you will ever see this car." I didnt believe him, so i told him, "Wont we see this car when it finally gets made?" He told me, "No, it will be different, just you wait." I didn't believe him, until the GR Supra came out in 2019. I thought, " He was right." Boy, this is hands down one of the most special days of my life. If you need proof that i remember this day, i was wearing an Oakland A's hat (because that was my favorite baseball team) and I was wearing an Illist sweatshirt. I cant remember if it had a Giraffe or a Hakosuka, but i remember this day. We drove in a 1970 4door Bamboo tan Datsun 510 which we still own to this day.

Yeah right? This was equipped with a Twin Turbo V6 engine probably pushing it 500 to 600 horsepower and if you take a look at the new one.... well you shouldn't even look at it oh god.

Wdym, 90% of the FT-1s design translated into the Supra. Yes, some things changed to comply with safety regulations and ease of production, but the design is largely the same

The reason we got the “body swapped Z4” is because Toyota learned its lesson on the MKIV Supra, which was a sales disappointment in America in the 1990’s. And cost Toyota a FORTUNE to make. That was back when Toyota had other cars that could use a longitudinal inline 6 like the Chaser, Aristo, Soarer, etc. Today, because most engines are transversely mounted for FWD-biased cars, there’s no room to engine swap an I-6 inside. So the Supra I-6 would have to be a one-off and VERY pricey.

This is the Supra that would have competed with the GT-R and European exotics. A shame they didn't engineer it to this level.
The Supra was a one up from the Celica of the 90s to compete with the C4 Vette. At the time, the GT-R was way ahead of these two from factory.
Today, Corvette at least the C7s, (don't care for C8s) and the FT-1 could've been the car to take on Corvette again and lose again, but at least it's a fantastic looking concept.
The GT-R is falling behind again. Thankfully, the fanboy stuff is finally dying down on the GT-R while people who never owned a car think the new supra miata is "fast" because of the overrated name. It's tiny and pitiful

I would say it has had a great production run and broad respect from the automotive community due to its insane supercar like capabilities. No excuse for Toyota not to make this concept with a high revving NA V-8 which would make grown men cry with joy.

Matthew Lara The cost is estimated to mack 911 territory, around the 70k mark. Though there is supposedly 3 trim levels offered so I am not sure which trim was referenced to the price estimate. 4cyl turbo around 260hp, Inline 6 turbo around 330hp, and top trim is a inline 6 turbo with electric drive motors for zero turbo lag performance and estimated 370hp. I would imagine the top tier trim, if the cost is 6 figures, would give more HP or better power to weight ratio to compete with the current GTR and future NSX. Since these (Supra TT, GTR, NSX, 3000GT VR4, 300zTT, Stealth RT, EVO&STI, base 911, and a few more im sure) had similar power and performance figures in the 90s, it would only make sense to make the "predecessor" of the Supra with the equal or greater performance than current variations of the cars above. Toyota has the BRS (FRS/BRZ/86), so if the FT1 is released, i would imagine its power and price tag to be above the STI but below the Lexus FLA. So, 70k more or less wouldnt be a shock.

It's a CONCEPT car people, meaning that it can and will change based on feedback from designers, the general public, enthusiasts, etc. Even the name "FT1" is part of the concept and can also change. They're bringing the car to trade shows, and "some" car meets like the one in this video to see what the public thinks. They will then redesign or modify closer to a production model based on the information they gather.
Joesay Canseco you forgot safety standards and engineers too... Turned the FT86 into something quite different than intended.. not bad, but not as beautiful as the concept
Spencer Geerlings yes of course. We really (if ever) see production cars that look exactly like their concept just for the reasons you stated. Safety, engineering issues, etc. Aesthetics are one thing, but to be able to put it on the road and be approved is another.

I kid you not, as of January 2024 I saw some pictures online of this car and thought that it would come out as a successor of the new "Supra" that they released. Turns out it's from 10 years ago!?!? This thing was truly ahead of it's time when it comes to design! Such a shame that we got a BMW instead of this..
That is one heck of a gorgeous car. I hope the design does not change one bit when it goes into production. So often, car manufacturers build beautiful concept cars, only to disappoint when the designed is modified for production.

yeah the designer (the one who was driving the car) said that it was plastic. There was a switch under the dash that controlled whether if it went into forward or reverse.

Tommy Walls there has been 13 years since the supra stopped being made in Japan. Since then Things have changed in the automotive world a LOT. This obviously won't be the finished product. But overall they want a 100K car in competition range of the GTR, 458 ect. Its supposed to be the future of Toyota not the past.

Toyota themselves said FT-1 stands for "Future Toyota Mark 1" its a concept name for a concept car... When this is put into production the name will change with whatever else Toyota decides to change because no concept-to-production stays the same.

lol. Well, Nissan called their new high-end sports car "GTR" instead of "Skyline" like it was so famously known as before, and it's doing just fine. Whether or not it's called a Supra in the end, it won't be called FT1 when it gets to production. It just doesn't have an official name yet.

Along with all the other replies, I wanted to add that the engineers and higher ups at Toyota wanted to make it very clear that this car is not meant to be a successor, reiteration, or re-creation to/of any of their previous cars. It is meant to be a completely new concept, completely new idea, and something completely of it's own. I highly doubt that they will name it "Supra" or anything relateable to any of their other cars.
Toyota should have just let Lexus build a straight 6 engine and an 8 speed twin clutch transmission for the new Supra in stead of BMW.

Why would "cost" matter if they were going to make a new car smaller and slower than the one from the 90 and price it at $50,000?. That's literally not enough car for the price and it's not even good-looking.
That's like paying $16 for a bowl of Mac n Cheese. There's just things you DON'T do.
The Supra MK.IV was a one up from the Celica and made to compete against the C4 vette, not the GT-R.
But the vette has came a long way since then and I don't see why the FT-1 couldn't have been the car to do it again. This design you don't just throw away, but they did. It's just a shame.

They make up a huge percentage of the world market and domestically (in Japan) they dominate; making up probably anywhere from 60-75% of their market. There is a reason for that; They know what they are doing. Also, remember that Toyota doesn't just make cars that are branded "Toyota." They also own (meaning that they also develop and produce) Subaru, Lexus, and Scion. Subaru and Toyota being in the top 3 most reliable and cheapest to own cars (along with Mazda, which is also Japanese, mind you) makes them a great choice of car to own; and it also helps that they have a long and successful racing heritage. Meaning that they have the know how, skills, and data to produce fabulous sports cars. The Japanese have a very particular way of doing things and they do them for a reason. They are not fools. Ferrari is only good at making performance cars. All they have is their racing heritage. You can only compare Ferrari to something like Toyota on even playing field, which means solely on the race track because Ferrari does not have as broad of a range as Toyota when it comes to car production. You can not say Ferrari is better than Toyota "in every way shape or form" because that simply is not true.
