Condemning the Attack on Salman Rushdie | Dr. Shabir Ally & Dr. Safiyyah Ally

  • Dr. Shabir Ally says the recent attack on Salman Rushdie is un-Islamic. He says the fatwa by Ayatollah Khomeini in 1989 against Rushdie's book, The Satanic Verses, was widely denounced by Muslim scholars, since the Quran doesn't prescribe the death penalty for those who blaspheme. But at the same time, many Muslims felt Rushdie had gone too far in his depictions of their beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), and that there should be some limits on freedom of expression. Dr. Safiyyah Ally says that the Quran mentions people referring to the Prophet as a madman and magician, but the Quran doesn't say they must be punished. Dr. Shabir adds that the Quran mentions people becoming Muslims in the morning and renouncing their faith later in the presence of the Prophet, which suggests a tolerance for detractors to Islam. Dr. Safiyyah ends by praying for Rushdie's recovery and for Muslims who support the attack to turn back the teachings of the Quran.

@@BrentonSwafford So if you deliberately incite hatred knowing full well the repercussions of it then that's o.k on the pretence of "free speech"? Its o.k to deliberately provoke people and aggravate them for a reaction?
So the thing is what is the parameters of freedom of speech? Freedom of speech is a precept which is an offshoot of liberalism. Freedom of speech you need to qualify with what's called the 'harm principle'.
If you really believe in the absolute freedom of speech then make jokes about the holocaust, about the 'n' word, would you do that? There are over 20 European countries and Israel that have holocaust denial laws and many have been convicted under these laws.
Make jokes about homosexuality, or transgenders?? You know your not going to say that because society has defined for you what's appropriate "freedom of speech" and what is inappropriate "freedom of speech". Seems as though "hate speech" is only defined when its blacks,or jews or homosexuals but when it comes to Islam everything goes.
Salman Rushdie is a very selfish person, he deliberately incited hatred. In his own words he knew it would create "ripples" in the Muslim world, he ofcourse being a born Muslim knew exactly what he wanted. His intentions were evil, he wanted cheap fame and fortune and he got that. Till date he is infamously known for this book around the globe..O the irony! Because the western world in which Salman Rushdie lives, is a secular/non-religious society in which anything & everything is open for discussion & even ridicule, if people feel so inclined. No topic is really "off-limits" so to speak. Certainly Muslims can speak out & condemn Rushdie's book "The Satanic Verses", if they so wish - after all, everyone is entitled to their own opinion & in the west, people do have freedom of speech & it is not illegal to offend people.
But the western world would also "condemn" any physical attack on a Muslim person, who was being attacked merely because the attacker did not like something the Muslim had said in a book they wrote, or anything similar.
The western world certainly came out & condemned the attack on Muslims at a mosque in New Zealand a few years ago. And consequently, that attacker is being suitably punished. No-one came out publicly & said those Muslims in New Zealand all deserved it because of their bad teachings etc or whatever other reason they may have chosen.
So the "condemnation" is not only applicable to Muslims - but to everyone when criminal acts are committed. But in the secular west, it is not a crime to ridicule religion & not a crime to simply offend people.

These sorts of attacks really are not the "isolated matters" you seem to think they are. There are really many more such attacks happening on a very regular basis - & most of them happen in overseas countries where there are significant numbers of Muslims living - like India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, & various middle-eastern countries, & even Indonesia etc.
The problem is that in many secular western democratic countries, they do get much publicity in the media there - probably for fear of criticising Islam & being labelled Islamophobic & being made the subject of similar attacks.
This is why all such attacks really need to be called out as a clear statement that such attacks will not be tolerated. They all cast the religion of Islam in a very bad light & are not likely to cause anyone to want to to convert to Islam. Quite the opposite - people will learn to turn their backs on Islam, if every such incident is drawn to their attention.
Most western countries are well aware of China's persecution of their Uyghur Muslim minority & are doing as much as they can by speaking out about it, & the issue is also getting a lot of publicity in western countries. My question is - why don't we hear so much about what the predominantly Muslim countries of the world are doing for their Muslim brothers & sisters in China? If even the Muslim countries of the world are not doing too much to help them - should they expect the secular western world to provide all the assistance?

I really think khumaini turned Rushdi into a celebrity and gained his “book” popularity and probably made it a bestseller. The judicious decision was to simply ignore Rushdi and his book, then he and his book will diminish and be dismissed. Khumaini turned Rushdi into a hero when he issued the so called “fatwa.”

In the secular western democratic world, it is not against the law to simply cause offence to anyone - no matter for what reason - being religion or anything else at all. Everything is open to criticism & ridicule, if people so desire. If one objects to such things, one can certainly speak out against it, or debate the matter with those involved. But it is against the law to take matters into one's own hands & physically attack, injure or kill people - regardless of the reason for doing so. If one cannot accept that, then perhaps one should not continue to live in a secular western country, where one cannot agree to always be a law-abiding citizen.

Surely, this attack is a subject of condemnation. But unfortunately a politically biased condemnation is not a genuine condemnation and the biasnees is pretty obvious, I don't need to clarify it. We see when Shia countries are protecting the most oppressed Sunni people of Palestine, while most Sunni countries are eagerly making alliances with the oppressor of the Palestinian people. If you are proud of your sect go ask your brothers in Palestines. If it is inspired by such motivation, then it has another agenda which might surpass the apparent agenda. I don't have any association with any sect becuase the Prophet disassociated himself from all sects equivocally (6:159). Yet I support people of every sphere on the basis of morality and justice. Please do not pretend people will not notice it when you hide a bad thing with a good one on top of it, and Who is on above, He knows your hearts even before you express something. It was a shock to me, not only when Rushdie was stabbed, but when I saw dozens of posts on UA-cam videos celebrating the assault, congratulating the assailant, one even saying Allahu Akbar. So it’s a relief to me to see you so simply and unequivocally denounce the attack, and to explain why such a thing is not condoned in Islam.
I do have one disagreement. You criticized Rushdie’s book for portraying the wives of the prophet in unsavory circumstances. There is a brothel in the book in which the prostitutes take on the names of the wives of the prophet, but there is no suggestion that the wives themselves are anything but chaste. Now of course you still have every right to find this offensive and to argue it is so (and others have the right to disagree). But I think it is important to be precise in describing what one objects to. It would be important under circumstances, but it is even more-so given the anger that is out there.

First of all it was a lone attacker! Secondly he's a shia and many sunnis do not regard shias as Muslim and others would say they are a deviant sect. The question regarding condemnation is called a loaded question and is called a fallacy of logic used to intentionally pigeonhole a responder.
Do you have to publicly condemn every crime committed by a non muslim??
Jumping on the condemnation waggon gives the false impression that crimes committed by muslims are somehow more outrageous and need a stronger or even a military response. Furthermore these same platform make very little noise when it comes to crimes committed by the west or Israel. The hypocrisy is absolutely glaring!

"It was a lone attacker". So, what! Regardless of whether he was alone or not, he acted in response to a fatwa made by others.
That he is a Shia still means he's a Muslim. If Sunni Muslims think otherwise, then they should do something about overcoming their own innate bigotry and internalised Isolamophobia!
I did not question 'condemnation'. A loaded question is intended to lead the responder towards a predetermined or preferred answer. I made a statement about the condemnation of the attack: it is actually a value judgement.
That I do not have to condemn every crime committed by a white man is a red herring argument: white people can be Muslim too! The attacker is a Muslim, following a Muslim ruling, acting in line with the Shari'a (those who insult the Prophet deserve death, apparently). The issue is not race, but religion; specifically the religion of Islam (which Salman Rushdie's book satirises). Unfortunately, most outrageous crimes are committed by Muslims; from public beheadings to suicide bombings. I'd say 9/11 was pretty outrageous, wouldn't you!
As for your second (and third?) red herrings, concerning the barbarity of Western and Israeli military actions, I think you'll find that millions of us have denounced their actions. Have you forgotten about the million people who marched on Westminster, London, back in 2003 in protest against the war in Iraq? However, I agree that Western media organisations often refuse to criticise such crimes against humanity. Either they are in some way compromised, or else forced not to report anything which could be considered antisemitic! But more often than not, the same media will downplay the crimes of Muslims (the "it has nothing to do with Islam" card!).

Whoever does not take up their cross and follow me is not worthy of me. Whoever finds their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life for my sake will find it.”
      ‭‭Matthew‬ ‭10:37-39‬ ‭
So Christ Means that there will be people that Follow him and it will cause Friction with Family members and even friends. We see that today when Many Muslims convert to Christianity and pretend to be Muslims to avoid being labeled an Apostate but once the Family finds out they have left Muhammad for Christ then there is no Peace in the Household. What a Sword does is separate, So Christ is using this word to represent what separation between his followers and those who are not. Its as Simple as that. No Hadith, No Tafsirs, No Commentaries. The Context is within the Text itself.

Rushdie's book was actually a novel - a work of fiction - even though it may have been loosely based on some Islamic scriptures. In most secular western democratic countries (where Salman Rushdie lives) it is not a criminal offence, or even illegal, to insult, cause offence, ridicule or humiliation, or even criticise anyone or anything - even in matters of religion. That is what is known as freedom of speech & expression & is also what writers use when they write novels & other works of fiction (ie "made up" stories).
Of course, any Muslims are free to be critical of that literary work if they so choose, & that right is also afforded to them under the west's freedom of speech/expression practices. What they are not permitted to do under western law, is to physically attack/assault or murder someone, because they do not like a book the person has written.

Under freedom of speech/expression in most western democratic countries, the only things which are actually illegal to say are bad things which are not true about certain identified/named or identifiable individuals, who have a reputation in the public sphere - things like libel/slander - & for which people can be legally sued. Speech which encourages or incites people to commit acts of physical violence against others is also illegal. But it is not illegal to say things which simply may cause offence to some, or certain categories of people.
It should also be recognised that there are people of many different faiths in this world & Muslims should not feel that they can make everyone - even people of other faiths (or of no faith) subject to the beliefs & teachings of Islam, & therefore also subject to the various punishments of Islam. Muslims should allow people of other faiths to live according to their own beliefs, teachings, & punishments, providing they also follow the laws applicable in their own countries, where they reside.
In western countries, such laws usually do not permit assaults/physical acts of violence against others, nor murder, unless it's in self-defence because one's own life is in physical & imminent danger of being damaged/lost/destroyed. If self-defence is being claimed, then usually the rule of "like for like" is applied - meaning that the person is allowed to defend themselves using the same/similar means with which they are being attacked. For example, if someone punches a person, the victim could hit/punch the attacker back - but it may not be accepted if the victim simply took a gun out & shot dead the attacker.
So certainly, it is right to condemn the physically violent & unprovoked attack on Salman Rushdie & also to condemn the criminal who committed that attack. Let us hope that the full force of the law will be brought down upon the attacker & that he receives appropriate punishment for his crime. I think it's also necessary to condemn those many unsavoury characters who expressed their praise, support, & congratulations to the attacker for his criminal acts. Let us also hope that Mr Rushdie eventually makes a complete recovery from his injuries - although that will obviously take a very long time.
And thank you to Dr Shabir Ally for publicly coming out & condemning this atrocious & criminal attack on the life of a human being. If only many more public figures in Islam would do the same. Unfortunately, I fear we may be waiting a long time for that.

@@kinanlaham744 For the individual who committed this crime, the country in which it happened is not so important - they probably would have committed the same crime no matter what country they were in. What IS important though, is WHY they did it (what was their motive for doing it) - & in the case of Muslims committing such crimes, it is usually based on their religious ideology, which encourages such crimes, through the fatwa, & other teachings of the religion.
And one can easily see by all the comments on social media, that there are a large number of Muslims who support the committing of such crimes. It's very easy to claim after such a crime has been committed, that a person has mental health issues, as a sort of "excuse". Perhaps the attacker does have mental health issues (which would not be surprising) - but if that was the case, why did someone not bring it to the attention of the authorities so he could have received treatment, perhaps before committing such a crime?
But it's still possible that, even in the absence of mental health issues, he may still have committed that crime, because of the religious ideology of Islam. It would certainly have been hard for anyone not to have heard about the fatwa on the life of Salman Rushdie (assuming one was alive at that time - & perhaps even if one was not alive at that time) - no matter what country one lived in. It became very well-known about world-wide. And judging from the comments many Muslims on social media have already made about the attack on Salman Rushdie - they are in complete agreement with the criminal actions of the attacker.
Crimes that are committed in western countries by caucasian people are more often than not, not motivated by religion & the perpetrator does not usually claim to have committed the crime in the name of any religion. In most cases the person does not actually practise any religion & is often an atheist/agnostic. In most cases the perpetrator has simply been motivated by a personal grudge they may have had against their particular victim (because of some perceived unjust action the victim may have personally inflicted on them previously), or their actions may have been prompted by mental health issues (eg in the case of a totally random attack).
For example, in most of the school shootings that have taken place in the USA - the perpetrators did not claim to have done it in the name of their religion, & most were not actually practising any particular religion. The attacks were either the result of the perpetrators having a grudge against their victims (eg they may have been bullied at their school, or somehow were not accepted or did not fit in) or they had mental health issues & just decided to randomly shoot people because they had easy access to a gun & perhaps may have simply been doing a "copy-cat" type of action, after having heard about similar types of shootings in other schools.
In the case of Muhammad Chowdhury, the indications are that he was not attacked due to his religion or beliefs or anything he had done to the attackers, & that it was a random attack by a group of thugs who had been on a crime spree for some time, having recently committed other crimes. The reason why the religion of the attackers is not being focussed on, is because the criminals are obviously not motivated by a religious reason & are probably not even following any religion. It is more than likely they are atheist/agnostic. They are just out to attack & rob anyone they can.

@@janburn007 Do you work for any federal agency?
Yes, you are right the country is not important unless the person was born and *raised* in that country, as is the case with Hadi Matar. He probably would not have committed this crime if he was raised in a different country. This crime is his, no one else is responsible of this crime except him. You can not and should not blame his mother, his father, or anyone else in his community for his crime. The same applies to a crime committed by a black person.
Comments on social media are not representative of Muslims. Also, *you* can not possibly read "all comments" on social media, that's an obvious exaggeration on your side to justify blaming Muslims and their ideology. Moreover, Muslims, like everyone else, are entitled to an opinion even if you don't like it. Freedom of speech is for everyone. Still, if you see a comment that violates TOS, feel free to report it.
I'll leave checking Matar's mental health issues to professionals, they can assess his case better than you. To answer your question, perhaps his mental problem had been discussed before he committed this crime, or maybe it is a recent problem. We simply don't know enough. I have no access to his medical records, maybe you do?
Salman Rushdie knew exactly what he was doing when he mocked *Khomeini*. Rushdie wanted the publicity he received and he knew, based on his career in an advertising agency, how to maximize that publicity. No doubt it brought him the success he was looking for. Perhaps, in the future, he should consider hiring a security company. You keep insisting it is the fault of "Islamic ideology", maybe you prefer that we do like China, put Muslims in concentration camps and force them to eat pork and drink beer. Or you might suggest starting another holocaust just like the one the Jews faced in Europe. You should read about both Khashoggi, who MBS wanted him killed, and Litvinenko, who Putin had a similar wish for him. Both, unlike Rushdie, were unlucky. If you want to blame anyone, perhaps you should blame Khomeini for his "fatwa." Remember the Islamic ideology is the ideology of more than one quarter of the world's population. Khomeini's fatwas are relevant to Shias only. Shias are a tiny fraction of Muslims.
I find it a bit alarming that you limit your argument about crimes in the west to caucasians, while the majority of crimes in America are committed by blacks and hispanics. It kinda hints toward the possibility that you live[ed] in an isolated town where everyone is white.
Your statement about crimes "not being motivated by religion" in the west is a proof against your main argument. Religion is supposed to give you one strong reason why you should *not* commit a crime. An atheist does not have that reason. Sadly, crimes committed in the west for the simplest and silliest of reasons.
Your selected example for crimes in the west, school shootings. Did you read it slowly: *school* shootings. That is *children* with guns committing major crimes. But, hey, here we are talking about Rushdie and blaming two billion Muslims.
Why do you think pregnant women, in the democratic west, are forced to carry to term when the fetus is dead despite the majority of people are atheists and agnostics?

      @janburn007 Рік тому

@@kinanlaham744 It does not really make any difference to what I may say - but I do actually work for a federal govenment agency.
The crime is the responsibility of the perpetrator & his personal beliefs, values & ethics. Some of those beliefs & values obviously relate to his religion & the fatwa against Salman Rushdie. The perpetrator's beliefs & ethics would be the product of his upbringing & the beliefs, including religious beliefs, that would have been taught to him by his parents & religious teachers. The country in which one is raised may not necessarily have a huge impact on one's beliefs & values, especially if one is raised with religious beliefs & values etc. It does not really make any difference what country the crime happened in - it might have happened in any country - & the fact that Salman Rushdie was visiting the US for a lecture made it a crime of opportunity for the perpetrator, who also happened to be in the US at that time too.
I do not necessarily assume that comments on social media are "representative" of the Muslim community, & obviously it's simply not possible to read all comments on social media. That's not to say though, that most people would still not be alarmed at the huge number of social media comments made by Muslims, in support of the perpetrator's attack on Salman Rushdie. I accept that Muslims are also entitled to free speech (though that does not mean it will not be criticised or challenged) & may hold a variety of differing opinions & views on the matter.
But I'm not so much interested in the views of individual Muslims, as I am in the actual teachings, beliefs, & ideology of Islam, which I have been able to get a reasonable understanding of, by simply reading the Islamic scriptures (the Quran & some of the better know & better-accepted hadiths) for myself. And from the reading of those Islamic scriptures myself, I have ascertained that Islam is not the religion of peace that we are often told it is - & some of its less peaceful teachings have helped me to understand why so many Muslims think that what the perpetrator did to Salman Rushdie, should be celebrated.
I never attempted to "assess" the perpetrator's mental health - I simply said that it was possible he may have mental health issues as some people were claiming - & that if he did have such issues, it would not be surprising. On the other hand, sometimes in criminal cases, people do claim "mental illness" as an excuse for having committed a crime, when it's not always the case. I was merely touting some of the possibilities - not attempting to assess him, & of course, I do not have access to his medical records.
I believe that given the fatwa against Rushdie, the group that brought him to America to give a lecture, should have provided better security for him if he was going to give a public lecture for them. Also, if I were Rushdie, & knowing what some Muslims are like, I probably would have worn some personal protective clothing such as stab-vest, as some of the British police do.
Many countries in the west have spoken out about the persecution of the (Muslim) Uyghurs in China & have been trying to bring pressure to bear on China, not to continue with this practice. And thanks to the publicity given to this issue by human rights organisations in the west, it is a well-known issue. However we don't hear too much about Muslim organisations in countries outside China, also lobbying China to cease their persecution of the Uyghurs. I don't really think anyone at all cares about what Muslims in western countries eat & drink - if they don't want to eat pork or drink beer, that's fine by most people in the west, & is not an issue at all. I'm well aware of what happened to Khashoggi & Litvinenko. Of course, Khomeini is certainly partly to blame for his fatwa on Rushdie & the effect it had on the perpetrator - but those who seek to carry out the fatwa through attacking &/or killing Rushdie are also to blame, because what they are doing is a criminal act & against the law of the country where Rushdie was attacked.
The reason I specifically referred to crimes committed by caucasians in my earlier example, was because I have often found that when Muslim people in particular refer to crimes being committed by people in the west - they are often really referring to crimes committed by white people of European origin - & certainly they are the majority of the population in most western countries. But of course, there are also crimes committed by people of various other ethnicities & races living in western countries. The point I was originally trying to make there was that such crimes committed in western countries are usually not motivated by any kind of religion & many people do not practise any religion at all.
If, as you say, having a religion gives people a good reason NOT to commit crimes - then it proves my above point that most of the crimes committed in the west are by people not religiously motivated & the people who do commit the crimes usually do not have any religious affiliation. Obviously atheists/agnostics do not have any religious affiliation, unless you consider both atheism & agnosticism to be some kind of religions that people practise - although most people would not consider them to be religions.
Yes, sadly, in the US, some school children who manage to get hold of guns DO commit crimes.
I did not blame 2 billion Muslims for attacking Rushdie. I did blame the ideology of the religion of Islam & some of its "less peaceful" teachings, for taking hold in the minds of some Muslims & encouraging them to commit crimes in the name of their religion. Fortunately the majority of Muslims do not take those same teachings seriously enough, to want to put them into practise by attacking/killing people. But there are definitely some who do - & they are the ones who commit crimes like attacking Rushdie.
I'm not aware of any situations in the west where pregnant women would be forced to carry dead foetuses to term. But even atheists & agnostics can sometimes hold views on some issues, which may happen to align with the views of some religious people, even though the practising religious people may still be in the minority.

That's not actually true - many people who are critical of Islam are automatically labelled "Islamophobes" by Muslims or others in the community. People are also free to be critical of the LGBTQ community, but they will also often be labelled "homophobic" & some of the other terms you have mentioned, including being banned from some social media sites & being labelled a hate spreader.
But it's important to differentiate between the treatment that can often be dished out on social media sites, & what is actually criminal (for which one might be gaoled) or illegal. The social media sites are a law unto themselves & are often guilty of treating some contributors unfairly & even banning people unnecessarily. But we are told that nothing at all can be done about them, because they are private companies & can do as they wish in terms of regulating their users.
People can't actually be gaoled for simply speaking out against or being critical of the LGBTQ community - that's just freedom of speech/expression - & it's certainly not criminal or even illegal. Nevertheless, that won't stop some social media sites from banning people who are critical of the LGBTQ community, or calling that criticism "hate speech" - even though what has been said is not illegal. What social media may call "hate speech" is quite different from the legal definition of "hate speech".
But there are laws which protect a range of different categories of people from public & blatant discrimination when it comes to certain things in the community like employment opportunities etc. For example, employers are not allowed to discriminate against people on the basis of gender, race/ethnicity, religion, marital status, sexual orientation etc. In this regard, Muslims are also protected from discrimination based on their religion, when it comes to employment opportunities & the workplace etc.
Under the law in most western countries, Muslims have to be treated the same as anyone else, & have the same/equal rights as anyone else - including people of other religions. However, there are certain areas the law does not control - like everyone's right to things like freedom of speech/expression - including people's opinions & beliefs. It is therefore not a criminal offence nor even illegal to insult or cause ridicule or offence to others, or to be critical of other people's opinions or beliefs. These things are all possible under freedom of speech.
The law also cannot control the way society or the community in general perceives certain issues, & its overall opinions & beliefs. It's not legally possible to sue the community or society in general, for supposedly having the wrong opinions/beliefs etc - though society's views are often based around what is considered "legal" under the law in that society. At times, there may be a perception that there are some double standards in the general community. And due to the often biased nature of many social media sites, the voices of a small minority group of people may get heard over & above the voices of the majority. Unfortunately nothing can be done about that sort of thing.
Because most secular western democratic countries have traditionally & historically been Christian countries, the views of the general communities in those countries, not to mention the laws, may not always align with those of the local Muslim community, which is more than likely quite a small percentage of the population. Hence there will probably always be differences of opinion between the Muslim communities in those countries, & the general population.
Nevertheless, it is still expected that the Muslim communities in those countries would abide by the laws of those countries, even if they may not agree with them, & be subject to any punishments that the law may impose on individual Muslims when they break the law of that country. The law is applied to everyone equally - regardless of their religion or religious beliefs. No-one can claim a religious exemption for things like physical violence or murder, if it is against the law - even if it is done in the name of a person's religion.

You’re allowed to criticize LGBTQ people, muslims do this all the time & LGBT people also have a right to criticize your speech against them, notice how both groups are able to say whatever they want? Freedom of speech doesn’t mean you’re exempt from criticism, it means the right to speak, write, publish, etc. opinions without government interference.
I understand muslims being offended over their religion being criticized but that’s not an excuse to kill or hurt someone over it.
